Lenten Guidelines
The season of Lent began on Ash Wednesday, February 14.
Following are the Lenten guidelines:
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and
abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence.
Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who
have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one
full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain
strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but
together they should not equal another full meal. Eating
between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and
juices are allowed.
Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On
days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health
or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not
oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the
parish priest should be consulted.
Fasting, almsgiving and prayer are the three traditional
disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should
undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of
preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.
Once a year Catholics
throughout the archdiocese
are asked to support the
greater church by giving a
gift to the Catholic Appeal. Just as our weekly
collection supports parish expenses, initiatives and
programs, the Catholic Appeal helps fund services that
are essential to both the parish and the greater Church
community. Many of you have received a letter from
Cardinal Sean requesting your support of the 2018
Catholic Appeal. We ask that you prayerfully consider
your ability to make a donation and hope that you will
respond generously. You may mail your pledge or visit
www.bostoncatholicappeal.org to donate online, or
take a pledge envelope from the Church pews. Thank
you!
Easter Choir
If you’ve considered joining the 10am choir but were afraid of
the time commitment, you are welcome to add your voice for
the Liturgies of the Sacred Triduum. There will be rehearsals
taking place on consecutive Sunday evenings on the following
dates: March 18 and March 25. The Liturgies of Holy Week
are nothing new to us. Take the opportunity to experience
these ancient rituals from a fresh perspective by singing about
Christ’s triumphant procession into Jerusalem on Palm
Sunday, the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, the Crucifixion
on Good Friday that is overcome by the light of Christ and
His victory over death at the Easter Vigil. The choir is a 35
member SATB group whose members range in age from teens
through 80-something. You do not need to be able to sight-
read to become a member. All are welcome to join this
wonderful group of singers. For more information contact
Jane O’Keefe at [email protected].
Easter Collection Clergy Health and Retirement Trust
This Easter our parish collection will benefit the Clergy
Health and Retirement Trust which cares for the needs of
our 590 priests. Our priests are always there for us;
they share Christ’s good new, perform good works and
build communities of good faith. All are welcome to learn
more and make a gift online at clergytrust.org. Thank
you in advance for your prayers and support.

ministry on Tuesdays at the Aberjona: LeiLanie D’Agostino,
Karen Branley, Rosemary Sullivan, Mike Heffernan, Ana
Vazquez, Margaret Power and Megan Shriver.

St. Mary Parish 5th Sunday of Lent March 18, 2018
5th Sunday of Lent
Jesus presents us with an amazing paradox in today’s Gospel. He is telling us that only by death comes life; only by spending our life do we preserve it; and only by service will come greatness. In this Gospel Jesus calls us to live in a way that goes counter to what the world preaches. We find life, if we live by His word. In the remaining days of Lent, pray for the grace to make the necessary changes in your life so that you can live in imitation of Christ.
Dear Parishioners,
What a joy it has been for me to serve
the community here at St. Mary
Parish! Last weekend at the Masses
we experienced the difficult challenge
of doing our annual pledge for the
Catholic Appeal. LeiLanie
D'Agostino did a wonderful job of
leading us through the process. When we opened up the sealed
bags on Monday, everyone was so excited that so many had
been returned. Thank you all. As we always say when it comes
to giving of our time, talent, or treasure, it is never too late to
join in.
Congratulations to Sal and the leaders of the Religious
Education Program for producing this past week many
“Religionaires” events. I had never seen this anywhere before,
and it was amazing to see our young parishioner-students
excitedly work together to come up with answers to religious
questions.
This week I also had a chance to pop into one of the
sessions of the Lenten series “The Pivotal Players.” The
participants were very enthusiastic about how the experience
has been. One person was so much interested that she came to
the Monday one in case the Tuesday group would not meet
due to the storm. They told me how Christa has organized the
sessions very well for them.
This week I am so looking forward to our parish mission
led by Brother Michael Moran. It is highly recommended
these days by health care providers to take time out, to slow
down, and spend some peaceful time centering on what is truly
meaningful in our lives. When we participate in this three day
mission, we will certainly have a better relationship with the
Lord Jesus and all His love.
Beyond all this activity continues the warm and
welcoming attitude of all of you. One person at our Baptism
preparation session told me how she was “parish shopping”
after her parish closed. As soon as she came here, she went no
further, as she felt so welcomed. That, to me, is a tribute to so
many priests and people over decades past who worked so
hard to create that kind of an inviting atmosphere.
Our calling, our vocation, my sisters and bothers, is to do
our very best now to keep and build that welcoming
atmosphere into the decades ahead. May God be with us.
Prayers always,
Fr. John

The Knights of Columbus are again asking for your
support for the Food for Families 40 Cans for Lent
program. During the Lenten season, we are asking for
contributions of one can of food per day during the 40
days of Lent. Please leave your donations at the back of
the Church, and members of the Saint John Vianney
Council will pick them up. All food collected will
benefit local families in need. Suggested items: Canned
fruits and vegetables, baked beans, canned meats, cereal,
peanut butter, jelly, jello, pasta, rice powdered milk,
soups, etc. For more information please contact Chuck
Nurnberger at 781/820-8230 or

be beyond the stamped expiration dates.

OUR COMMUNITY
Today’s Reflection
A month ago we received ashes on our foreheads as Lent began. We may have chosen to give up something or to do something special during this penitential season. Where do we stand now with that commitment we made? Have we slid back into our old ways from time to time? Have we totally forgotten about it? Well, it’s not too late. Always the Lord is calling us to follow Him, no matter what has come before.
