Introduction
Welcome to Edinburgh Photographic Society (EPS) and to our 157th Edinburgh International Exhibition ofPhotography, one of the oldest photographic exhibitions in the world. The first one ran in 1861, the year EPSwas established.
EPS is proud of its heritage and its pioneering founders who explored the science and art of photography.Photographic production has changed much in the intervening period. With the advent of digital cameras, agreat number of people carry a camera regularly in their pockets or bags and huge numbers of photographs aretaken each day all over the world. Very few of these make it to print. In the words of Ansel Adams, the renownedAmerican landscape photographer, “You don’t take a photograph, you make it”. The final stage in making thatimage is the production of a print. It is finite and fixed. It does not vary according to any equipment used to viewit. We are proud, therefore, to be one of the few remaining print exhibitions around and one of the very few print-only ones in existence.
Our exhibition is selected by “The Edinburgh System” which takes place over two days. On the first day everysingle print is examined by at least one of the three judges, at close range. This allows the print quality to beexamined. All images rejected at this stage will have been examined by all three judges, leaving around 50% ofprints for the second (scoring) day's judging. All three judges score each print from 2 to 5, giving a range of 6 to15 and the highest scoring images are selected.
We only accept the number of images that we can display. In recent years our acceptance level was 202 printsdue to the constraints of our hanging system. I’m pleased to say that over the past year EPS has installed a newwire-hanging system. This has allowed us to increase the number of acceptances and this year, all imagesscoring 13 and above were selected. This resulted in a total of 236 images from around 2100 submitted from 34countries. This is still a very low acceptance rate (around 11%) and getting a print accepted at Edinburghremains a difficult and highly sought achievement.
Finally, my thanks to all those EPS members who contribute greatly to unpacking, sorting, labelling and torunning the logistics over two judging days. Afterwards, to mounting, framing, hanging the exhibition, to theactivities involved in the production of this catalogue and subsequent door-manning at the exhibition.
Thanks especially to Edith, the International Exhibition Secretary who leads the whole show.
Doug Berndt ARPS, EFIAP, President EPS

Selectors’ Comments
This year the Edinburgh Photographic Society holds its 157th International
Exhibition making it one of the most long standing and respected societies in
the world to hold such an event.
There is quite a team of dedicated Edinburgh PS members that gather each
morning of the judging weekend to ensure smooth running, each gives their
time on a voluntary basis and together they bring the exhibition to life. Without
their help the exhibition would simply not be possible and we thank all of them.
We are delighted to have been invited and given the enviable task of selecting
the prints that we feel should be presented for viewing. We wish you the very
best wishes for a hugely successful exhibition.

Selectors’ Biographies
Roger Parry ARPS EFIAP DPAGB ESFIAP HonPAGB I am a keen exhibitor having a great interest in both National & International
Exhibitions and am Chairman of the Smethwick International Exhibition andMember of the London Salon and have judged National & InternationalExhibitions both in the UK and overseas.I became involved in photography while still at school in 1958. A family
friend suggested that I go along to the nearby Smethwick PhotographicSociety to further my interest and I have been a member ever since. I havebeen President for two separate terms and Secretary for over 50 years.I have served as President of the Midland Counties Photographic
Federation for two separate terms. As a member of the PAGB Executive, I chair the Judges Selection Sub-
Committee and I am also a member of the FIAP Sub-Committee. I am a technical consultant to Paterson Photographic, following many years
as their Technical Manager during which I visited many Camera Clubs givingtalks and demonstrations on darkroom work and studio lighting techniques. Together with my wife Judith, I continue to give club lectures as part of the Permajet Lecture Team.
Hunter Kennedy MPAGB EFIAP ARPSMy interest in photography spans 40 years. I joined the Carluke Club in
1977 some three months after its inception where I have served on thecommittee in almost every senior post including six years as President.
My primary interest has always been in printing. Black and white wasinitially my preferred medium. Quickly followed by Cibachrome colour. I thenchanged to digital as it became obvious that the future lay in that medium. Upuntil the late 90’s I considered myself to be a keen club photographer, afterwhich I started entering international salons, where, I have enjoyed a steadydegree of acceptances and awards. Photography has become a full timehobby. I am currently immediate past President of the Scottish PhotographicFederation, and the judges’ Liaison Officer.
Although I am best known as a landscape photographer I am also a keenobserver of people and get great pleasure in candid and sport photography. Iam a listed judge and speaker in the PAGB and the SPF handbooks. Myhobby has taken me to the four corners of the UK as a judge and lecturer.
Steven Le Prevost FRPS FIPF AFIAP MPAGBWhere possible my aim is to challenge the fundamentals and boundaries
of photography and to strive to be unique in my preferred style ofphotographic art. Genres covered are still life, character and nautical studies, all influenced by impressionism. My goal is to create a picture that portraysmood, atmosphere and emotion. Achieving this may involve purposelyremoving the clinical sharpness that we generally associate with a photographor possibly working on the colour palette so the colours are allowed to bleed.I currently serve on the Royal Photographic Society’s Fine Art Distinctions
Panel and have some of my work is included within the RPS PermanentCollection. I hold three Fellowships, two with the Royal Photographic Societyand one with the Irish Photographic Federation. An invitation to membershipof the London Salon of Photography in 2011 was proudly accepted.FRPS – Fellow. (Royal Photographic Society) 2005MPAGB – Master. (Photographic Alliance of Great Britain) 2005AFIAP – Artiste. (Federation Internationale de l’Art Photographique) 2010FRPS – Fellow. (Royal Photographic Society) 2016FIPF - Fellow.
