EDITOR’S LETTER
In a few weeks, we’ll be turning our clocks back an hour – which means it’ll start getting darker even earlier (and it means it’s nearly time for the C-word – Christmas, of course). How depressing! However, fear not, there is help at hand. And that’s in the shape of our mammoth, fi ve-page, winter sun feature. Turn to P48 for our top recommendations on where to go to soak up the rays while the UK is gearing up for snow (probably). Enjoy!

In 2012, the London Film Festival moved out of its West End and South Bank heartland to spread out across the city, and this year, celebrating its 57th annual event, the LFF has one of its most dynamic, strongest and engaging line-ups yet of movies you absolutely must see.
There are more than 200 films at this year’s 12-day-long cinematic party, meaning there is something for everyone, no matter what your taste.
So whether you’re hankering after a restored movie about the first ascent of the highest mountain in the world, The Epic Of Everest, the latest Hollywood star-laden mega-flicks that will be coming your way over the next few months, such as the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, or the up-and-coming indie talent that will be making waves over the next few years, such as actor-turned filmmaker Joseph Gordon Levitt’s directorial debut Don Jon, the LFF programme will have just what you are after.
“This year it was important to consolidate that [the city-wide spread from last year], and let those changes really prove themselves,” festival
Film fans rejoice! The 57th annual BFI London Film Festival is upon us, with more than 200 ace new movies to sink your teeth into Words aLasdaIr morTon

Marvellous: Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson star in Mary Poppins-based Saving Mr Banks
director and Aussie Clare Stewart told the BBC after introducing a raft of updates to the festival’s focus last year, her first in charge, which saw a 13% increase in attendance as well as 33% of all moviegoers coming to the festival that year doing so for the first time.
Keeping this renewed city-wide focus and vibrancy has been key for Stewart, with screenings this year taking place everywhere from Brixton to Hackney and Bethnal Green as well as in the traditional West End.
The festival programme itself is broken up into a number of categories including cult, laugh, thrill, dare, debate and more, along with a series of shorts. There is also the big name Gala screenings that see Hollywood A-lister Tom Hanks bookend the festival with opening night gala screening Captain Phillips about the 2009 hijacking of a US container ship, and closing night gala Saving Mr Banks, about bringing Mary Poppins to the big screen.
A number of films, will be up against one another to claim the big award in the official competition, with Parkland, a star-studded ensemble featuring Zac Ephron about the assassination of
John F Kennedy and Richard Ayoade’s (The IT Crowd) sophomore outing The Double, starring Jesse Eisenberg, strong contenders to pick up this year’s crown.
Fittingly, for a British film festival led by an Australian, there are a load of Aussie, Kiwi and Saffa movies taking place across the programme, too, details of which you can find overleaf.
In preparation for the festival, Stewart watches around 500 movies a year, which sounds a staggering amount of films to find time for. Even more staggering, though, is the revelation that this is actually down on her previous annual average.
“I surprised someone the other day when I said it used to be about 800,” she told the BBC of her movie-watching habits.
So it’s time to grab some popcorn and check out the hottest movies out there right now, and find out if you agree with Stewart’s choices. ❚

the rocketaustralia
The Rocket, directed by Aussie filmmaker Kim Mourdant, won the Best Narrative Film award at
this year’s New York-based Tribeca Film Festival and is an absolute corker. Set in Laos and starring mostly amateur actors, it tells the story of a young boy who is said to be cursed from birth and who leads his family across country to enter a homemade rocket competition to win some money and help his family out of poverty. A total winner!

DUKES BARBAR
LONDONDRINKS
THE SCENE Having a drink in Dukes is like being in the living room of extremely loaded family friends that you don’t know very well. There’s dark oak panelling, expensive looking fi replaces and imposing portraits of His Highness God-knows-who everywhere. Drinks trolleys look as though they’ve been wheeled over the same carpet for generations. Men in extremely expensive suits outnumber ladies about 10 to one. The point of all this heavy-handed, old-fashioned Englishness? Well, Ian Fleming used to be a regular, and the bar is said to have inspired the legendary Bond bar specifi cation: ‘Shaken not stirred.’ THE GRUB It’s all about the nibbles. New dishes of bright green Sorrentino olives arrive as fast as you can eat them, along with bowls of crackers and nuts.
BEHIND THE BAR You’d be crazy not give their martinis a go. The bartender will talk you through the whole mixing process, with the lemon zest from the Amalfi Coast, the freezing cold Potocki vodka, and the dry vermouth brewed exclusively for Duke’s in Highgate. The end result is a real world-class tipple. If martinis aren’t your thing, try the other Bond-themed cocktails, such as the Vesper or the Moneypenny.BILL PLEASE Cocktails start from £16.95; spirits from £8; glasses of wine from £6.75; pint of beer from £6.50.VERDICT Brilliant London experience with superbly tasty (if pricey) drinks. HAND-BAKED EUPHORIAOne of London’s oldest artisan bakeries launches its new flagship bakery and cafe this month on Threadneedle Street. Euphorium Bakery boasts hand-baked pastries and breads, as well as freshly made sandwiches and salads, gourmet coffee, cakes and a hot carvery, too. We have to say we are most looking forward to checking out the 28-day matured Scottish roast beef rib and the Lincolnshire crispy suckling pig sandwiches. Probably not at the same time, mind, but they sound so enticing and impossible to resist that we might not be able to help ourselves. Lunch and dinner, you say? We just might.

THE SCENE I visited TimberYard on Old Street for a pop-up event launching a blog and website, A Novel Concept (anovelconcept.co.uk). The founder, Louise, is passionate about reading and wants to encourage her followers to use books as a springboard to think more and do more. We gathered in the cosy downstairs area, seated on plump armchairs or patchwork rocking chairs (my favourite) and resting our drinks on the trunks used as tables to listen to Louise’s inspirational talk, who is aiming for her start-up to blossom into an events company. The reason I mention this is because it perfectly illustrates TimberYard’s philosophy: to encourage new ideas, growth, creativity and collaboration. Whether you’re talking through your ideas while bent over your Mac, gesticulating widely over a coffee with colleagues, or in front of a crowd at a pop-up event, the TimberYard offers a practical and yet warm and inviting space in which to do it. THE GRUB The focus at the TimberYard is on its hot drinks: the fruity and sweet Jabberwocky is used for its espresso-based beverages, while single origin coffees can be prepared by trained baristas. There’s more to the tea than a bag in some hot water too, with sommeliers offering 15 brews from around the world. Even the hot chocolate is organic, made using Northiam Dairy milk. If you get peckish, the hearty, fresh sandwiches, creamy soups and thick slices of quiche will see you through, while the tasty teacakes and sweet buns are your coffee’s best buddy.
BEHIND THE BAR If you come up with your best ideas with a glass of booze in your hand (or at least you think you do), there are wines and beers on offer, but TimberYard is a day-time venue, closing at 8pm weekdays and 6pm weeknights. BILL PLEASE Sandwiches cost from £4.50, tea and coffee from £2.50. VERDICT Gone are the days when us creative types were tormented hermits, bursting with ideas without anyone to share them with. Now we have a space to go where we can create, share, and have a killer coffee and sanger while we’re at it. CG

They sat at number fi ve in last year’s BBC Sound of 2013 poll, marking them as ones to watch with only a handful of single releases to their name. But when these singles included the stomping Lies and the already-a-crowd-favourite The Mother That We Share, with frontwoman Lauren Mayberry’s vocals hitting an emotional peak it is impossible not to be swept up by, it’s hardly surprising people were starting to sit up and take note way back then.
The Recovery EP followed suit earlier this year, its title track a bittersweet affair lamenting impending lost love, Mayberry backed by Ian Cook and Martin Doherty’s thumping beats and shimmering electro pulses. They played a packed-out show at London’s Village Underground back in April, where anyone and everyone who could nab themselves a ticket piled into this east London bunker, and they then stole the show at Field Day in May, too.
With festival season done now, and US tours amongst others taking the Chvrches charm to the world, they released their debut, The Bones Of What You Believe last month and have this headline show at the Empire to mark their emphatic arrival as the zeitgeist-grabbing band of now. Be there!

You might have thought that festival season is over for the time being, but you would be wrong. Tickets for next year’s Glastonbury went on sale last week and 120,000 of them were snapped up in under an hour-and-a-half. Website Ticketweb was reportedly selling tickets at a rate of 3000 a minute, so if you haven’t been one of the lucky few, then you’ll have to try your luck and hope some fortuitous series of events sees fit to bless you and land one in your lap. Michael Eavis’ Somerset party is not the only one either getting things started early with loads of other UK fests offering advance ticket discounts already. So while you might just have packed away the tent and be settling into the idea that summer is gone for another year, if you don’t act now, you could be left with few options when the new year comes around. What happened to being impulsive? Festival partying now requires plenty of planning.

Isaiah RadkeBassist and vocalist of fast-rising punk rockers Radkey on why they love
UK crowds and the best thing about being in a band with your brothersINTERVIEW ALASDAIR MORTON
Are you looking forward to playing the Relentless Live show alongside the likes of Pure Love, The Xcerts, Professor Green and Zane Lowe?We are! Looking like it’s gonna be really fun.
So tell us a little bit about how you started playing together as a band?Well, Dee [Radke – guitar/ vocals] got asked to fill in for this cover band, and he was using my bass to do so. After the show went well, I decided that I wanted to use my bass so I came up with the idea of starting a band.
Your first gigs in St Joseph, Missouri, were at local club The Rendezvous – what did you learn from playing this infamous venue? We learned that it’d take forever to get a following in our hometown pretty much. But we love the Rendezvous anyways.
How has your hometown influenced your sound musically, and your outlook on life?It hasn’t influenced [us] that much, honestly.
How would you describe the music scene of St Joseph? It could be a lot better. There isn’t really that much of a scene there.
What are the pros and cons of playing with your brothers in a band? Do musical differences come up more than they might if you weren’t playing with family? It’s pretty much all pros really. We’re all into the same music, so there really isn’t very much trouble.
How did you get into punk rock initially?Well our dad had a pretty cool music collection and punk was a part of it. We pretty much just started jamming and that’s what came out.
Who were your earliest fave bands and who are your favourite bands now?The Ramones, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Weezer – all
that stuff. Those have been our favorites from the beginning all the way until now.
You guys have been homeschooled – how did you find this and do you feel you missed out on a high school experience, or were you just glad to be spared and free to do what you want to do?We definitely missed the high school experience, but that doesn’t really bother us. We were happy being weird homeschooled kids, plus there was plenty of time to do things that you actually wanted to do, like music.
You recently played the Afropunk Festival in Brooklyn – what was it like playing in New York for the first time?It was really cool! We love New York, and the show was a really good time.
How did you find playing the famous rock festival Download this year in the UK and what did you make of English crowds? We totally loved playing Download. It was such a great show and we learned right as we started playing it that we absolutely loved English crowds, too.
You’re coming over to the UK and to Europe this autumn – what are you most looking forward to about this tour and where are you most looking forward to playing?Well, [after Download] we know that we love English crowds, and the venues are all really cool. We’re definitely most excited about Cambridge, because we know people there. Another band? No, two girls we’ve known over the internet since we were like 12. Your debut EP Cat & Mouse is out now – how did the recording go and what can people can expect from it?It was really laidback, easy and fun. We worked with Damien Paris of [Brooklyn band] The Giraffes, who are really awesome. I would say that you could expect loud guitars and some pretty catchy hooks.

PRINCE AVALANCHEFILM review
STARRING: Paul Rudd, Emile Hirsch | 15 | 94mins
The words ‘quirky’ and ‘offbeat’ are too often bandied around to describe many an indie flick, but they could not be more apt for writer-director David Gordon Green’s unassuming but totally wonderful latest.
Alvin (Paul Rudd) and his girlfriend’s younger brother Lance (Emile Hirsch) are tasked with tidying up after the forest fires that decimated parts of Texas in 1988. Alvin is the sensible sort, who takes his job and responsibility seriously and with little room for fun or humour. Lance is the opposite, the wild card living for the weekend. An odd couple indeed. Yet during this easy-going and often-ambling movie, they come to understand each other, and us them, although Green could hardly be said to be serving up life lessons on a plate ready to be absorbed.
Getting back to his roots, essentially, after the likes of Your Highness (woeful) and Pineapple Express (mildly diverting), he has won plaudits aplenty including picking up the Best Director award at this year’s Berlin film festival for this slight and character-based outing. Alvin and Lance goofing around and winding each other up occupy much of the time, as the two amble the roads painting yellow lines and clearing up, investigating burned out homes in the process.
Taking its time, it reveals much more about the duo who, save for a recurring trucker and an odd woman wandering around her former house, are up there front and centre for the duration. It’s testament to Rudd and Hirsch’s performances and Green’s direction that it’s such a hypnotic, involving ride.
GOOD FOR: Getting away from the summer season of CG explosion-laden, block-busting
ESCAPE PLANFILM
STARRING: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger | 15 | 115mins
It’s like the last 20 years didn’t happen as Sylvester Stallone and Arnie team up to bash some skulls and flex muscles in this prison escape actionner. Stallone is wrongly convicted and sent to prison, where he and cell mate, the former Governator, hatch a plan to make a bid for freedom, aided by 50 Cent’s tech expert while dodging Jim Caviezel’s prison warden.

The British Film Institute (BFI) has recently restored this movie comprised of footage of climbers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine’s attempts to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1924. JAMES MULLINGER: THE BAD BOY OF FEMINISMCOMEDY
Mullinger is a contradiction – he earned a degree in Women’s Studies, then worked at a lads’ mag for a while and is now a stand-up. LOU SANDERS
What’s the show about? Just a bunch of dudes coming together and laughing pretty hard. There will be boners all round I suppose.
Who inspired you to take to the stage? I thought if I don’t do it, [would] it [be] fair that all these people miss out on jokes about Fanta and Genderless Michael? I decided that no, it wasn’t fair.
Can you remember your first show? My first show was very good and I thought, ‘Someone’s a natural.’ Then I had about two or three years of terribleness. My early material was very uninspired and was all about some of my ex-boyfriends and my nan, and it was all delivered by someone who had watched too much Stewart Lee. What’s the strangest show you have done? We thought someone died in a show once – actually they very nearly did! They had a heart attack but luckily they were OK. I think some of their family kept on watching, which was a bit odd.

On the Saturday, we learnt that all those numbers and letters on our camera dials and screens aren’t just there for decoration, or even for the sole use of Ansel Adams’ ancestors. In fact, Wilson tells us the only difference between post-course us and the pros is practice. We will know all they know, it’s just a case of applying it and perfecting it. Also, like driving a car, if we practise enough, the process of knowing what buttons to press and what numbers to turn to will become second nature.
With this in mind, we got to practising our newly learnt techniques on the Sunday. Heading out onto the streets of London, I would have put a coach-load of Japanese tourists to shame with the amount of snapping I was doing. It was great to put what I had learnt to the test. I made a lot of mistakes, but bearing in mind I was an ‘auto girl’ barely two days earlier, I was switching between my aperture and shutterspeed numbers with confidence.
When we got back to the studio and saw each other’s images, it was incredible what a bunch of amateurs had achieved (it would be bragging to mention that I won a prize for best portrait, so I won’t). Wilson describes this weekend workshop as his “bootcamp course” as you go from knowing a little to a lot. And he’s right. The proof is in the pictures.
Hands up if you have an SLR camera. Now keep your hand up if you constantly have it on ‘Auto’. If your hand’s in the air (maybe not literally, but in your mind at least), then don’t be ashamed, but do read on.
Three days ago, my hand would have remained pointing to the sky. But, after just a two-day photography course, I can comfortably throw around words like “aperture” and “shutterspeed” and actually understand what they mean and – even better – how to put them into practice on my SLR.
Usually, 10am on a Saturday is strictly reserved for lying in bed sleeping off my hangover, but this Saturday I found myself in a studio on Mortimer Street, sat at a table with a handful of strangers and feeling like I was back at my first day at school. At this school, though, there was free coffee, tea, chocolate and fruit, and the teacher wasn’t a wheezy old bore who smelt of pipe tobacco and Polo mints, but an enthusiastic, interesting and engaging guy called Nigel Wilson.
Clearly passionate about his subject, he did warn us that we would be consuming a helluva lot of information over the next two days, and he was right, but Wilson managed to keep us going despite the intensity – the coffee also helped.
The idea behind the course is to teach you how to use your camera, rather than what sort of photos to take. Or, as Wilson puts it, “Technique is the hanger on which creativity is hung. This weekend we are learning the technique, so then you can be as creative as you like.”
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN...
Shutterspeed How to change your shutterspeed in order to capture different levels of movement. Panning How to shoot and freeze a moving vehicle whilst retaining the movement lines in the background. Aperture How to shift the focus of your image by varying the blurriness of the background using aperture.Composition The rule of thirds and watching out for visual debris.Equipment What filters and lenses do what, when you need a flash and why you MUST buy a tripod!Useful links Where to get quality prints, second-hand equipment, repairs, further courses and inspiration.Further learning Once you’ve done this course, or if you already know the above, Wilson offers night shoot and travel photography courses.

COMPOSITION Positioned in the right third of the frame, there is no visual debris, which is also helped by the wide aperture, so the focus is entirely on him.
APERTURE I shot this flower on the narrowest aperture, keeping everything sharp, and then on the widest aperture, blurring out the background.
SHUTTERSPEED Using a fast shutterspeed, I panned this moving taxi, taking a quick succession of shots, to freeze the vehicle but show movement in the blurred background.
TEXTURE Using maximum zoom, I emphasised the roughness of this rusty nail by using a wide aperture.

Brisbane Road runs adjacent to Sydney Road and Adelaide Road, and they all offer a real sense of suburban life – tree-lined with lots of families and big gardens. But contrary to the streets’ Antipodean link, there are more Polish residents than Aussie ones.PROPERTY: Houses around this area are a medley of semi-detached Victorian and Sixties-style, super spacious properties.WHAT’S ON OFFER: The pace of life is relaxed. CROOK, CULT HERO CHOPPER DIES AUSTRALIA
Infamous criminal and author Mark ‘Chopper’ Read died aged 58 last week.
Read, subject of the film Chopper starring Eric Bana, spent a total of 23 years in prison for crimes including assault, kidnapping and armed robbery.
He went on to write 15 books, mostly detailing his version of events in the colourful criminal underworld.
Read had claimed to have been part of the killing of 19 people, but told the New York Times this year: “Look, honestly, I haven’t killed that many people,” he insisted, “probably about four or seven, depending on how you look at it.”
Read refused a liver transplant in 2008 believing someone else would be more deserving. He was diagnosed with liver cancer in April last year and died of the disease in Parkville, Victoria.

AUSSIE’S WOOL RECORD BEATING TO BE TELEVISED
NORWAYLook out Australia, Norway is coming for you ... with knitting needles.
The Scandinavian country’s public TV broadcaster NRK has scheduled five hours of its precious air-time on Nov 1 to show an attempt at the knitting world record.
The Norwegians aim to break the non-stop knitting record of four hours 50 minutes, held by Australia.
The attempt will be preceded by a four-hour doco about how wool gets from a sheep’s back to ours.
NRK producer Rune Moeklebust said “it’s kind of ordinary TV but very slow, although they’ll be knitting as fast as they can”.

LONDON CABS GET MAKEOVER IN WAAUSTRALIA
The famous London cab is heading Down Under, but it’ll get a makeover from the traditional black to white.
The London Taxi Company has sent 98 TX4 taxis to Perth for a few weeks of trials, with the colour change due to the constant sunshine in WA capital.
All going well, Victoria is next in line for the spacious people movers.
The LTC recently relaunched its production facility in Coventry.
The company’s ceo Evan Simeon said: “One Perth operator who purchased a fl eet of the 50 bright, white used TX4s has already had a stampede of drivers who want to be the fi rst ones to buy a cab and partake in the trial.”

Newcastle University has applied to trademark the acronym for Central University of Newcastle upon Tyne and Civic University of Newcastle Upon Tyne (we’re too polite to print but you get the picture).
The move is a bizarre rebranding effort by the institution that also includes an application for the trademark the Research University of Newcastle upon Tyne, or RUNT, meaning students would be RUNTs.
‘They are all common variations that people may search for and they will simply help interested students fi nd us quicker,’ a spokesman told HuffPost UK.

KANGAROOS GO WITH EXPERIENCE RUGBY LEAGUE
Captain Cameron Smith will have no shortage of experience behind him as he leads Australia into their campaign to win back the Rugby League World Cup, starting October 26 in Cardiff.
Coach Tim Sheens’ 24-man tour squad named after last week’s grand final included players from 14 NRL clubs and just three new faces.
The uncapped players to join the side include Sydney Roosters’ Premiership-winner Boyd Cordner, Dally M Prop of the Year Andrew Fifita and Canberra Raiders’ backrower Josh Papalii. From the grand final with Cordner are his Roosters teammate Michael Jennings, who scored a spectacular try to clinch the title, and Manly’s Clive Churchill Medal-winner Daly Cherry-Evans.
There are 14 players in the line-up that beat New Zealand 32-12 in the mid-year test.
TONGA NAME NRL-STACKED SQAUD RUGBY LEAGUE
When it comes to the bookies, Australia, New Zealand and England are the only nations given a chance in the upcoming World Cup.
But Tonga’s side stacked with NRL stars could prove a genuine hassle to the top contenders.
At the very least, the Tongans, who beat fancied Samoa earlier this year, will back themselves from moving on from Group C.
Manly prop Brent Kite will be captain with talent including Sea Eagles teammate Mahe Fonua, Sika Manu, a
member of New Zealand’s 2008 Cup-winning side, and Parramatta’s Fuifui Moimoi. Tonga’s opener will be against Scotland in Workington on October 29.
LONDON TO HOST NFL GAMES IN 2014 NFL
London’s huge response to the first of two NFL showcases for the year has already seen the sport’s fans rewarded, with the American code committing three regular-season games to Wembley Stadium next year.
Home teams will be the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Atlanta Falcons and the Oakland Raiders in the most games the NFL has played abroad in a year.
After the Minnesota Vikings beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-27 in September, Jacksonville hosts the San Francisco 49ers on October 27, with Wembley long sold out for the match.

If the Wallabies were a batsman, based on the just-gone Rugby Championship, they’d be fl at track bullies – they can spank Argentina but they’re way off when it comes to South Africa or NZ.
So far, the only victories of Ewan McKenzie’s reign have come against the Pumas, twice, including last week’s seven-try 54-17 in Rosario to wrap up the competition. Meanwhile, the Springboks and All Blacks were battling
to decide a Championship winner. The cream rose to the top, and the All Blacks rightfully claimed the title. But the spunk of the Springboks showed how far behind the Wallabies are.
Australia has one last chance before attention is turned to the fi ve-week autumn Europe tour, and its against the All Blacks. Given the Kiwis have won their two Championship meetings, the Bledisloe Cup is theirs again, but a third game is a chance for the Wallabies to send a warning to northern hemisphere sides – their aim must be to save face.

He went to the races instead, which was a bad look, and he got a one-match suspended ban.

A work in progress is what you would call Australia’s national football team as it prepares to take on the best in Brazil next year. As the top leagues in the world break for international duties, already World Cup-qualifi ed Australia has taken the opportunity to tune up in Europe with matches against France in Paris on Friday and Canada at Fulham’s Craven Cottage this Tuesday.
The fi xtures may mean little in the whole scheme of things, but with a squad that draws from all corners of the footballing globe, any chance to gather in the same city is one to be taken with open arms.
After a 6-0 spanking by Brazil, coach Holger Osieck’s position has come into question, but players have lined up to back the German as the man to take them to Brazil.
Ahead of this week’s match in London, TNT caught up with Josh Kennedy, the goal-scoring hero who secured Australia’s World Cup place in June when he came off the bench and scored an 83rd minute header against Iraq.
Australia has all sort of hurdles to jump when preparing for a major tournament, how important are friendlies in preparing the Socceroos for the World Cup? Since qualifying for the World Cup it’s important to play as many matches together against challenging opposition whenever possible. Coach Osieck has been giving young players their chance throughout qualifying and experimenting when he can – when will we start seeing the team we can expect to be playing in gold in Brazil? The coach has said all positions are up for grabs and as a player we have to prove ourselves to him at each and every training session and match in the lead up. We have a good idea of the players in the mix for selection, but we won’t know until the last minute who will be on the plane to Brazil and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Being based in London, we see the England national set-up complaining about the hardships of getting their national team together. Do you fi nd this amusing given they have no players outside the Premier League in their squad and Australia can have players coming from up to 15 leagues to play together? Being an Australian national team player we get used to travelling very long distances to play matches. Although we play in football leagues all over the world, it’s always good to get together with the boys in camp and it doesn’t take us long to get used to playing together again no matter what systems we play for our clubs. What challenges (other than geography) come with the fact Aussie players ply their trade all over the world? It’s not so much a challenge but more a benefi t in that collectively we have plenty of experience with different playing styles and in different environments around the world and we can adapt well as a result. After the unfortunate result in Brazil, Osieck said the Socceroos were way off the top sides as far as preparing for the World Cup is concerned – how far off? The result in Brazil was a good reminder of what it will take to be competitive at the World Cup. We made a few mistakes and were punished for them. To be competitive we will have to eradicate those errors from our game.
Since a lot of Australian opposition is from Asia, are these friendlies against northern hemisphere opposition an ideal chance against other styles you’ll encounter at the Cup?Since our move into the Asian Football Confederation we obviously play all our competitive matches against Asian opposition. Since qualifying for the World Cup, we need to test ourselves against different playing styles to prepare ourselves for what we could face at the World Cup.

Your stint at Nagoya Grampus in Japan since 2009 (115 appearances for 57 goals) is by far the longest of your career – how has that stability helped your game? The Nagoya style of play suits my game and when you are playing regularly and scoring goals your confidence increases and so does your enjoyment levels.
How do you view your role in the Aussie set-up? You’ve become known as a bit of a supersub… Like any player you want to play in as many matches as possible for your country. If the coach picks you as a starting player or as a substitute it doesn’t matter as long as we are successful as a team. For me, as long as I am scoring goals I don’t mind where I play. Canada are ranked 106 in the world but should be better than that with players coming from around Europe and the US Major League Soccer – how do the Socceroos view them?To be honest we don’t take too much notice of a team’s ranking. We respect every opponent that we play, and treat each match on its own merits. This match against Canada will be no different. Craven Cottage is the Socceroos’ home away from home – what are you expecting in the way of support for London? No matter where you play around the world, we always find Australian supporters. I’m sure with the number of Aussies living in London and the UK this match will be no different. We know the stars of the Socceroos, with Tim Cahill, Brett Holman, Mark Bresciano and captain Lucas Neill on this tour, but who of the young lads should we lookout for? There are plenty of young guys coming through, but one player you should keep an eye out for is Dario Vidosic. He recently moved to FC Sion in Switzerland and scored two cracking goals on the weekend. Definitely one to watch.

DEL PIERO RATES ‘VERY TOUGH’ A-LEAGUEThe A-League’s biggest name Alessandro Del Piero has warned overseas talent eager for an easy payday that they won’t find it Down Under and urged Australia to work harder to keep their young stars in the local game.
Only two players from the A-League are travelling with the Socceroos for this fortnight’s international friendlies against France and Canada.
Del Piero was speaking at the launch of the 2013/14 A-League season, which kicks off this Friday with his Sydney FC taking on Newcastle Jets.
“Australian football is very tough with a lot of good players,” Del Piero said.
“It’s not good for Australian soccer if a lot of young players leave to go to Europe to play. The strength in the teams is more if they can spend more time here.”

WHY: The Village Halloween Parade has been going strong since it was founded back in 1974. Since then, the event has transformed into a carnival, rather than the theatrical event it started life as. Over 60,000 costumed participants and two million spectators will line the mile-long parade this year.
DO IT BECAUSE: Those with the most creative costumes could fi nd themselves televised to millions of spectators – it’s worth making an effort. This year marks the event’s 40th year, so it’s bound to be a show-stopper.

TECH-SAVVY TRAVELLINGA shimmering and fi zzing aura of information was supposed to surround me everywhere I went on my last holiday. By this I mean for the fi rst time on a backpacking jaunt, I packed my iPhone, Kindle and lightweight netbook, smugly confi dent that they would keep me armed with infallible knowledge every step of the way.
Now we’re in an age of expat blogs, travellers’ forums, online reviews and all sorts of other travel networking magic, surely messing up on a trip is a thing of the past. Booked a dirty room? Should have checked the ratings on Hostels.com fi rst, my friend. Looking for proper fi lter coffee? Put a shout out on Twitter. Lost? Just check Google Maps you complete Luddite!
I was determined not a single second of my trip to Kerala in India would be wasted either – if I wasn’t reading up on Indian history on my Kindle, I’d be posting pictures of the backwaters on Facebook and doing, um, other useful, tech-savvy things.
But the best-laid plans and all that. What actually happened is I was completely paralysed with indecision at every turn. If hostel reviewers contradicted each other I’d spend 15 minutes trying to work out if excessive punctuation meant one of them was an angry nutter and couldn’t be trusted. I couldn’t even pick a place for brekkie without feverishly wading through endless forums to fi nd the best place for eggs and toast.
I’m not blaming the technology, of course. There’s a lot to be gained from being constantly connected, but it’s also easy to get overwhelmed with information. Next time I’ll probably try to do without the support of the travel networking army – it’s always worked before.

Air New Zealand is hoping for repeat viral success with its latest quirky in-flight safety video – by enlisting the help of US actress Betty White. Known for her role in TV sitcom Golden Girls, the 91-year-old appears in the film with a cast of golden oldies at a fictional retirement home in America. “If you wanna know about survival, talk to us, cause you’re gonna want some advice from folks who have been there and done that,” White says in the opening of Safety Old School Style. She added: “It’s important to live life to the full.” See the video: airnewzealand.com/safetyoldschool
DOWN UNDER DEMAND
Bill Bryson’s Down Under is still flying off book shelves, 13 years after it was first published. The American travel writer’s dry look at life in Australia is Dymocks’ highest-selling travel narrative for 2013, to date. Taking second place on Dymocks’ top 10 travel narrative list is Australian Sarah Turnbull’s Almost French, first published in 2002. In third place is none other than Paul Theroux, with The Last Train to Zona Verde (2013), for which the American author returned to Africa. When it comes to sales across all travel books (guides and narratives), Lonely Planet publications fill all of the top 10 spots.
LONDON BEATS OZ
London has pipped Sydney to the top spot in a survey of the best cities in the world to live. However, the Australian city also took the title of having the most friendly people. Only London beat Sydney in the global research company’s list of 50 “best cities”, placing the harbour city above global hubs like Paris, New York, Rome and Vienna, according to the Anholt-Gfk survey which ranked Melbourne 10th best. NSW Tourism Minister George Souris says the result shows Sydney is a “global city with an enormous reputation”. The survey, based on interviews with 5144 adults in 11 countries, measures the “power and appeal of each city’s brand image”.
INDIA VISA CHANGE
India is looking at issuing visas on arrival for visitors from 40 more countries, raising hopes it will overcome national security fears to boost its tourism industry. A meeting of senior officials from the home, foreign and tourism ministries, as well as intelligence officers, concluded with a consensus in favour of the sweeping reform. The new countries would include Australia, the US and Britain – as well as Canada, Brazil and EU nations including France and Germany. Despite its cultural attractions, India attracts relatively few foreign holidaymakers. Its 2012 total of 6.58m was 25% of Thailand’s or Malaysia’s.

With a sparkle in their Isle It may not be a co-incidence that ‘Isle’ is an anogram of ‘lies’ as we hear many-a tall tale on our trip to Ireland...WORDS KELLY GRIFFIN
NEXT WEEK
Get spooked:A Halloween adventure in Dublin
“We still believe in fairies, here on the island,” says Carol, our effervescent Irish tour guide, to a busload of bemused backpackers. “The Irish may laugh if you ask them outright if they believe in fairies. But ask them to go near one of the fairies’ forts” – Rowan trees, which apparently can bring you dire misfortune – “they’ll say to you: not on my life.”
I’m unsure whether I’m having my leg pulled – the Irish are as famous for their cheeky humour as they are for their friendliness. I’m onboard a three-day bus tour of southern Ireland, and the emphasis is as much on learning about Ireland’s rich culture as enjoying some bloody good craic. Throughout our trip we’re fed a constant stream of ‘facts’ about the Emerald Isle, which are part history, part legend, and part complete nonsense spontaneously invented by Carol just to entertain her gullible tour group. And entertained we certainly are.
The fun begins just a few hours into the trip, when I fi nd myself lying on the cold, hard, bluestone roof of 600-year-old Blarney Castle in the ‘Rebel County’ Cork. Having climbed for what seemed an eternity up the claustrophobic castle staircase, I’m instructed by the castle guide to lie down with my head against the very edge of the roof. While he grabs hold of me for support, I’m told to bend backwards over a gut-churning 27m-high drop, grab hold of the adjacent wall about a half-metre from the roof’s edge, and, upside down, plant a wet one on the well-worn Blarney Stone.
Legend has it that those who lock lips with this particular slab of bluestone, one of Ireland’s most famous landmarks, will be endowed with the ‘gift of the gab’: an ability to both speak eloquently and fl atter the pants off anyone. It seems to have worked for Mick Jagger, Billy Connolly and even Winston Churchill – all of whom have kissed the Stone before me – and so I say “what the feck”, and I shut my eyes and pucker up.
The details of the following eve are hazy at best – I remember something about dancing all night with a bunch of newfound friends (perhaps the Blarney Stone’s powers came through after all?) to a so-cheesy-they’re-awesome covers band at an Irish pub. I wake up the next day with a throbbing headache, and Carol says yep, no doubt about it, I’ve been visited by a grogoch.
A grogoch, she tells me, is a little elf-like fi gure that visits
you after a big night out; he does a little jig on your head (a-ha, hence the headache) and may even steal some of your cash, which is why you sometimes seem to have drunkenly spent more money than you should have – the cheeky bugger has actually taken it.
Later that day, with The Pogues playing loud and proud on the stereo, the bus heads towards the Dingle Peninsula, Ireland’s most westerly point, where the fertile green hills meet golden sands. The sun is out and I smile to myself when I see a strong beam of sunlight fall brightly on one particular green hill; if this were a fairytale, that would be where the leprechaun’s pot of gold is hidden.
We spend our last night in Ennis, Ireland’s “most superstitious county”, says Carol. After a night out enjoying live traditional Irish folk music and hot whiskey, I’m sitting alone in my room, when it dawns on me just how eerily quiet it is, save for the blustering wind belting the windowpanes – oh, and the echo in my head of Carol’s throwaway comment that the hostel we’re staying in is haunted.
Now, I don’t believe in ghosts, or fairies, or leprechauns. But maybe the superstitions of this rather magic land have seeped into my brain, because do you think I’m going to spend a night in this room, alone, to see if Carol’s (total baloney) remark is true? Ha, not on my life.
I hurriedly grab my things and sneak into a spare bed in the shared dorms on the ground fl oor. ❚

TRAVELTIPS
Q I’m going to Las Vegas for a week’s holiday in December and would like
to try to visit the Grand Canyon whilst I’m there. How easy is it to get there and is a day trip feasible? What’s the best way for me to get there? Is it expensive? Peter
A Two of America’s major tourist hotspots, Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon, are
relatively close together by US standards, so visiting the Canyon is a popular excursion away from the hubbub of Vegas’ casinos. Most visitors either drive to the canyon from Vegas or they opt for a private tour (either by road or air) as the sights aren’t directly linked by public transport. If you are keen to do a day trip to the Grand Canyon, it is possible but keep in mind that the journey takes around six hours by road each way so your time at the canyon will be limited.
You could either hire a car to reach the canyon or opt for an organised tour. If there is more than one person travelling, it may be cheaper to hire a car than travelling with an organised tour. However, it is possible to fi nd a reasonably good value tour from Vegas to the Grand Canyon if you shop around. Viator’s day excursion (£45pp) also includes a two-hour jeep tour of the Canyon’s South Rim and a stop at the Hoover Dam. It is wise to compare tours to ensure that your chosen tour offers enough time
to explore the canyon when you arrive as their itineraries will vary. In December, snowstorms can occur making driving conditions diffi cult, so letting an experienced driver tackle this enormous journey for you can be a good idea. There is a risk tours could be cancelled too if the weather is severe but this is unlikely. A helicopter ride is a fast way to reach the canyon from Vegas, and will provide stunning aerial views. It’s pricey, though, at about £200pp.
Q I’m planning to go to Thailand for New Year. Whereabouts would you
recommend I celebrate? Michelle, via email
A The most infamous of Thai parties is, of course, the Full Moon Party at Koh
Phangan, which takes place monthly, and the largest of them all is on New Year’s Eve. If you’re after something a little more laid-back, consider the fi shing village of Hat Bo Phut on Koh Samui, where the many local bars and restaurants will host parties, and at midnight there is a celebration with pretty lanterns and fi reworks.
My recommendation would be to see in the New Year in Bangkok. Shopping hub Central World Plaza is likely to host the biggest public shindig. Remember January is peak season when planning your budget.
READERS’ TIPS ON MARKETS
BAG A BARGAINWhen I was in Luang Prabang in Laos I visited the night market to pick up some silver rings for my sister. I spent about half an hour at the stall and got two for a fi ver. NO TO KNOCK-OFFSI used to live in Dubai and there was a big market called Dragon Mart, which sold fake designer glasses and handbags and stuff. But my advice would be never to buy knock-offs when you’re abroad! They only ever last a few weeks before they fall apart.Becs Morice, via email
DON’T GET CONNED!Walking around a souk in Marrakech, my wrist was grabbed by a ‘henna lady’, who wanted to give me a ‘gift’. Quicker than I could pull my hand away, she left me with a muddy design on my hand – leaving me feeling obliged to pay her. I gave her the equivalent of £5, and she threw it on the fl oor, calling it an insult. Jenny Peters, via email

WHY IT WORKS “The inspiration behind this image was the colours. I loved all the different shades of blue in the water, the sky, the dome and the shadows. The beauty comes from the setting sun kissing the Orthodox church, causing it to glow. This photo was captured in Santorini, Greece. It reflects the true tranquillity of the island, a place for relaxation, both today and many years ago when the Spartan’s used it for resting between battles.”

affords fabulous views of this picturesque city. The attraction that really captivates me, however, is the Chocostory (choco-story.be), dedicated to all things cocoa-related and best of all, dishes out free chocolate.
As Belgium is particularly famous for its chips, I can’t resist a stop at the fascinating Frietsmuseum (frietmuseum.be) that
professes to be “the only museum in the world to relate the history of the potato fry”. As well as selling discount chips from its basement café, the museum offers tips on how to cook the perfect friet. I discover that the Belgian chip is traditionally fried in a combination of beef and horse fat, so veggies beware! The Half Moon Brewery (Walplein
It’s not that I’m tight, it’s just I refuse to cough up £26 for a plate of tough steak and fries, nor do I think a bowl of garlicky sea molluscs is worth the £17 price tag. Before my trip to medieval Bruges, I imagined sipping Belgian beer in cosy bars and strolling along scenic cobble-stoned streets where time appears to have stood still. Unfortunately, I soon discover that inflation is not stuck in this time warp and that the Flemish capital caters to the mass market with extortionate cruise ship prices. So I vow to make the most of my hard-earned cash by enjoying Bruges and its culinary delights without spending a fortune.
The hotel receptionist suggests I head to Sint- Amandsstraat Street where the locals go to grab a bite to eat. Here, I discover several delis serving up hearty portions of pasta and paninis for a mere £2.60 apiece. The Carrefour Express on Zuidzandstraat stocks enough affordable slabs of Belgian chocolate to burst the seams on my jeans. As I load up on supplies for later, the weather turns and it starts to pour with rain – the perfect excuse to start sampling that famous Belgian beer around the corner in ‘t Brugs Beertje or the “Little Bear” (brugsbeerteje.be).
Boasting more than 300 types of beer, including everything from chocolate to cherry flavours, there’s plenty of choice in this old-fashioned, characterful wooden bar to while away the hours and write postcards home to Mum, though my mantra is: why waste money on expensive postcards when beer mats are free and plentiful?
The following day, awaking fresh from a beer-induced sleep, I plan to see as many museums as possible in 48 hours using the bargain City Card (bruggecitycard.be) which costs £32 for 48 hours – or £30 if you’re 26 and under – meaning I can dash around as many as I see fit and really get my money’s worth. The tourist board reckons the card, which can be bought online or from a kiosk at Bruges train station, should save you more than £170 if you manage to visit everything in that time.
The canal boat tour offers a different perspective on the city’s picture-pretty medieval cityscape while the Dali Expo (dali-interart.be) is a sumptuously decorated museum devoted to the works of the Spanish surrealist painter. I swing by the must-see belfry, an 83-metre-tall medieval bell tower that played a starring role in the Colin Farrell movie In Bruges. I climb the 366 steps to the top of the tower, which

Indulge at Den Dyver, which serves four courses with a beer selection for £85. The dishes at this upmarket restaurant are individually paired with beers as well as being cooked in Belgium’s favourite nectar. Try the carpaccio of codfish with hazelnut butter, wheat beer and lime (dyver.be).
If you fancy a change from beer, visit the Wijnbar Est, which offers a dizzying selection of more than 90 wines. Get on down to a bit of live jazz or blues every Sunday from 8pm (wijnbarest.be).
Mega splurge at the four-star De Tuilerieen and you could be lucky enough to be rubbing shoulders with Colin Farrell, Ralph Fiennes, Rutger Hauer or Demis Roussos. A superior deluxe double room in this 15th century noble residence starts at £111 (hoteltuilerieen.com).
Cambrinus serves the magnificent Menu of the Brewers (£22), consisting of Trappist Cheese Croquettes, followed by Flemish carbonades prepared with “Gulden Draak” Beer served with applesauce, and to finish, a crème brûlée perfumed with the dark Abbey beer of Ename (cambrinus.eu).
Staminee De Garre is a wood-panelled establishment hidden away down a narrow alleyway off Breidelstraat (De Garre 1). Draught beer starts from about £3 a glass and every drink is served with a portion of cheese cubes. Their signature beer is the aptly named De Garre, which is a knee trembling 10.5 per cent (00 32 5034 1029).
The Etap Hotel looks like an IKEA showroom. Being right above the station, you won’t waste any time hunting for it and the modern minimalist rooms cost from £37 per double room per night (etaphotel.com).
The cheapest eats are the friets that Belgium is so famous for, with the most popular vendors being the two carts that battle it out in front of the belfry from 7am. Expect to pay about £2.60 for a cone of fries smothered in mayonnaise.
Unfortunately, beer is not cheap in Belgium, normally working out about £6 a pint, so make the most of happy hour at Snuffels’ Bar with 80p happy hour beers from 9-10pm (snuffel.be)
Snuffel Backpacker Hostel has dorm beds from £16pppn, the cheapest offering in town. They also have a kitchen, free walking tours, bicycles for rent and their own bar with a nightly happy hour (snuffel.be).

I discover that an acidic snack is the best thing to replenish the gut to make the night last longer and that the coriander used in the brewing process – also found in Hoegaarden and Leffe – is actually an aphrodisiac.
On an early stroll through the historic centre on Sunday morning I notice that free souvenirs can be found in the form of discarded beer glasses on the pavement and windowsills, left from the festivities of the night before. Cambrinus bar is an unmissable drinking institution with hundreds of beers to choose from, all served in their own individual and quirky glasses and, asking nicely, I manage to get some free promotional games from McChouffe, a beer brand. What a bonus – that’s all my souvenirs acquired for free.
One final word of warning to those on a budget: the local authorities don’t look fondly upon “wild peeing”. Getting caught with your pants down will cost you a not-so-cool £131!

Winter sunTHE WORLD
The sun still has his hat on: in Faro, Algarve, he does anyway
Beach spot in Algarve
BIGTRIP
Winter in England has always been infamously miserable – cold, dark and damp. The days get shorter, so we go to work in the dark and come home in the dark. And there’s rain, rain and, er, more rain. Depressed? Don’t be. Because we’ve found an escape route. Here, we give you the ultimate guide to winter sun getaways, and even include the flight time from London and average temperatures so you can tailor the perfect holiday to your tastes. Cos we’re nice like that.
2-3 HOURS AWAY
ALGARVEFLIGHT TIME 2hrs 20mins HOW HOT A comfortable 22°C.DON’T MISS Take the time to explore various corners of Portugal’s premier tourist spot, much-visited for its beautiful beaches and craggy coastal scenery. The summer crowds will have died down from all-out mayhem to a more manageable dull roar – and this is a good thing – but Lagos remains a must-do for its thriving nightlife and surfer scene. For something a little quieter, Monchique is a quaint little place with views over wooded countryside, and perhaps the most laidback hang-out remains Tavira, set along a placid river and with a history dating back to the Romans. The Algarve’s capital, Faro, has a medieval quarter well worth exploring.
SPAINFLIGHT TIME 2hrs 20mins HOW HOT A manageable 18°C-22°C.DON’T MISS For equal parts beach time and cultural cravings, Barcelona cannot be beaten. From art to flamenco by way of fashion and food, the Catalonian capital will not disappoint. A walk down La Rambla is compulsory – the mile-long boulevard is alive with artists, human statues, fortune-tellers, dancers, markets and cute cafes. Spain is also a good bet for late package deals, owing to its pretty-much-guaranteed sunny demeanour. Check out updates on the TNT website for all the latest dirt-cheap offers.
IBIZAFLIGHT TIME 2hrs 30mins HOW HOT Typically upwards of 25°C, though there can

be some rainy and windy days in October, when the temperature can go all the way down to 17°C (shock, horror). DON’T MISS The clubs may have closed down but the sun still shines strong over this infamous party isle. Check out the old walled city of Dalt Vila (in Ibiza Town) after dark, when the streets are lit up to atmospheric effect. October is also the perfect time to enjoy San Antonio’s quieter beaches and safe, shallow waters. You can dig out plenty of culture away from the likes of Space and Cafe del Mar too, owing to the island’s chequered history that takes in the Phoenicians, Greeks, Assyrians, Romans and Moors.
3-4 HOURS AWAY
MOROCCOFLIGHT TIME 3hrs 30minsHOW HOT Expect an average temperature of 22°C.DON’T MISS Forget tourist-crammed Marrakech and traffic-jammed Casablanca – laidback coastal town Essaouira is where it’s at. Though the gale-force winds – sorry, bracing sea breeze – might put a little chill in the air, this is a perfect spot for wind-surfing and kite-surfing. There’s also heaps of history, as old colonial fortresses and ancient city walls scatter the area. Do try to avoid the determined hash-pushers, though, and definitely politely decline the generous

offer of a magic mushroom omelette (yes, this has happened, and we said no – honest).
TURKEYFLIGHT TIME 4hrsHOW HOT 22°C-25°C is the norm.DON’T MISS Resist the urge to drink fishbowls of booze in resorts bursting with Brits, and soak up the culture in Istanbul instead. Smoke shisha under a bridge by the Bosphorus, marvel at the city’s elegant mosques, and don’t chicken out of steaming it up at the Turkish baths. (Getting slapped about by a large, naked Turkish woman is one of those once-in-a-lifetime deals. Well, depending on the preferences of your private life.) If you have time, a trip to see the fairy chimneys in Cappadocia won’t be regretted. Ancient cave-dwellers built their homes into the area’s stone cliffs, leaving the unreal, other-world landscape that can be seen today. Tourists can even stay in cave hotels, and a hot air balloon ride over the area is a must if you’re feeling flush. There are daily flights to Cappadocia from Istanbul, or you can even take an overnight bus, which takes around 12 hours.
MALTAFLIGHT TIME 3hrs 15minsHOW HOT A very agreeable 25°C. DON’T MISS This island country south of Sicily is surrounded by some of the most crystal clear waters in the Mediterranean Sea. Steeped in history, perhaps the most memorable sight is the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, an underground network of chambers and passages hewn out of rock to create an ancient necropolis. It is thought to date all the way back to about 3000BC. There is also, of course, an

year-round, with an average of 20°C-22°C in winter. DON’T MISS Away from the south-western resorts where sunbathers glug bitter and scoff fish and chips, the most heavily touristed Canary Island is a dramatic ensemble of volcanic landscapes. Ramble its rugged scenery, descend deep underground into eerie lava tubes, and climb Spain’s tallest peak, the 3718m Pico del Teide.
GRAN CANARIAFLIGHT TIME 4hrs 25minsHOW HOT The average temperature in October is a very generous 24°C.DON’T MISS Another Canary Island best known for beach-front tourism, there’s plenty of opportunity here to soak up winter sun. But spare a day or two to escape the beach and head further inland, where the mountainscape is surprisingly stunning. We’d also recommend Arucas in the north for walking, and Teror is a cutesy postcard town with farmers’ markets and picturesque houses.

If you don’t mind sitting on a plane for longer than a few hours, these sunny spots make great escapes from England’s long, cruel winter...
1 CANCUN FLIGHT TIME: 15hrsMexico’s biggest party spot – once-upon-a-time an unassuming fishing town – is a balls-out extravaganza of beaches and booze. October is the month the weather starts cooling down – to a respectably sizzling 30°C. Though certainly not for everyone, if it’s big and loud you’re after, Cancun can bring it.
2 COSTA RICA FLIGHT TIME: 15hrsCosta Rica’s recent surge in popularity has made cheap treats hard to find. Still, there are bargains to be had if you stray away from the boutique scene, and it remains a pretty unbeatable something-for-everyone slice of exotica: whether it’s bumming around on beaches, trekking up volcanoes, surfing, snorkelling, or zip-lining through lush rainforest, Costa Rica has it all.
3 GOA FLIGHT TIME: 16hrsThough the disturbingly thonged remnants of the 1960s ‘Goa freaks’ scene can still be spotted wandering this once hippy haven, nowadays Goa is very much a young person’s
paradise. Head to Anjuna in the north for relaxed beach bars by day and raucous raves by night, or Palolem in the south to live a gloriously lazy life in beachfront huts. Whatever you do, don’t miss out on Goa’s unique Portuguese-influenced cuisine – especially the addictive Goan sausage. Also, nasty local homebrew hooch feni needs to be tasted to be believed.
4 FLORIDA FLIGHT TIME: 13hrsFrom picture-perfect Miami beaches right out of a cheesy rap video to the deadly creatures lurking in Florida’s subtropical Everglades, this schizophrenic holiday destination should be strapped into a strait-jacket and put on lockdown – well, if it weren’t so damned enjoyable. Super-sized theme-parks, kayaking, biking, ’gators, pumping nightlife and beautiful people combine into one epic thrill-ride. Or you could just lie on the beach.
5 DOMINICAN REPUBLIC FLIGHT TIME: 14hrsThe all-inclusive boom is still, er, booming, so if you’re after a hassle-free holiday with sun, sea, sand and zero call for thought, let the package deals be your guide. Anyone looking for a bit more action than the traditional Caribbean holiday promises should head to the adventure sports capital of Cabarete, a great getaway on the north coast suited to kitesurfing and windsurfing.
IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL: Winter sun further afar
Sundowners: Ibiza
CYPRUSFLIGHT TIME 4-5hrsHOW HOT A scorching 25°C-30°C.DON’T MISS Do yourself a favour and give Agia Napa a wide berth. Paphos, however, does beaches and bass-booming bars alongside archaeological wonders. The Tombs of the Kings are the must-do here – a rocky complex where elite citizens of the ancient city were entombed. You can clamber into caves and crawl inside narrow passages to your Indiana Jones-loving heart’s content.
EGYPTFLIGHT TIME 5-6hrsHOW HOT Expect to sweat in temperatures that get up to around 27°C.DON’T MISS You should avoid the Capital for obvious reasons, but the beach resorts have been left unscathed by the recent political unrest. We reckon a chilled stay in beach-bum heaven Dahab on the Sinai Peninsula is the best way to enjoy Egypt’s winter sun. There’s also diving and trekking nearby if you get bored topping up the tan. We’d certainly recommend the former – once a Bedouin fi shing village, Dahab is without doubt one of Sinai’s most spectacular diving destinations. The backpacker vibe ensures plenty of parties too. ❚

THE HOTTEST PLACES ON EARTH

While it’s perfectly understandable to crave some rays during London’s crisp winter months, there is such a thing as going too far. Here’s where we wouldn’t recommend a holiday – no matter how fed up you are of freezing your bum off …
1 DALLOL, ETHIOPIAAn average year-round temperature of 35°C might not sound so bad, but the mercury regularly rises above 46°C during the day in Dallol. At 328ft below sea level, it’s one of the lowest points on earth not covered by water, and boasts a dramatic landscape that includes steaming yellow sulphur fi elds and sparkling white salt beds.
2 EL AZIZIA, LIBYAIn 1922, the hottest temperature ever recorded on earth – 57.8°C – was reported at this sizzling spot in the Sahara. Camping holidays in El Azizia do not come recommended.
3 DEATH VALLEY, CALIFORNIAThe cheery moniker is a direct result of this valley in the Mojave desert’s extreme weather conditions, and, indeed, about a dozen people have died here in the past 15 years, thanks to the searing heat. The hottest temperature in the western hemisphere was recorded at Death Valley’s aptly named Furnace Creek, when it hit 56.7°C in 1913 (just short of El Azizia’s world record). Strangely enough, you can also feast your eyes on snow-covered peaks in this hot spot.
4 KUWAIT CITY, KUWAITSpare a thought for Kuwait’s city slickers, who are possibly the sweatiest 30,000 citizens on the planet when the Kuwaiti capital serves up temperatures in excess of 46°C over summer. Even a dip in the Persian Gulf by which it sits is unlikely to help matters – the water will be akin to a sweltering hot bath.
