Indonesian Citizenship

Citizenship is the right o ever! individ"al# $! proclaiming a citizenship% an

individ"al is agreeing to abide to that co"ntr!&s constit"tion and government# 'owever%

 beore an individ"al can adopt a citizenship% he or she m"st "lill a speciic legislation# In

Indonesia% this is (rticle 27% 2)% and *+ o the 1,+5 Constit"tion# -hese re."irements and are

essential to ens"re that citizens will abide to a co"ntr!&s law% participate in national acts% and

respect the comm"nit! as well as contrib"te to it# Citizenship is a part o an individ"al&s

identit! / even i he or she is an immigrant / and has advantages and disadvantages#

(s an immigrant% o -"an in led China at the age o seven% in the earl! 1,+0s% and

entered Indonesia with his ather% mother% and siblings 34ioe Ing# (s vigilantes% the! too6

rom the rich to eed the poor% which angered the Chinese government% who wanted to

condemn them to prison# (ter consideration% his amil! decided to lea to Indonesia% where

the! had several contacts and 6nowledge o a growing Chinese comm"nit!# 'is ather made

the initial o"rne!% hiding in a coin to be sm"ggled into the co"ntr!# (ter his ather&s

arrival% he and the rest o his amil! were able to immigrate "nder better circ"mstances#

D"ring the time% Indonesia% still colonized% gave the option or immigrants to maintain their

original citizenship# D"ring Indonesia&s independence% his amil! was oered citizenship% b"t

the! t"rned it down and decided to 6eep their Chinese citizenship% beca"se the! tho"ght the!

wo"ld ret"rn to China# 'owever% ater thirt! !ears and creating his own amil!% o -"an in

inall! adopted and Indonesian citizenship when he decided that he wo"ld not ret"rn to

China# -he process was not simple% and the! were re."ired to remember Indonesian histor!

government&s law# Citizenship also gives an individ"al the right to participate in a co"ntr!&s

 political aairs% which is beneicial or those who have a passion or a nation&s nationalit!#

8hen abroad% citizenship also gives an individ"al the right to ne"tral gro"nd when the! enter

their co"ntr!&s embass!% serving as re"ge against "nair treatment# :nder Indonesian

citizenship% these things are g"aranteed in (rticles 27;2) o the 1,+5 Constit"tion% which

states that all citizens have the right to wor6% have stable living% reedom to associate%

reedom o e<pression% as well as rights to lie% amil!% basic needs% ed"cation% 6nowledge%

g"aranteed protection% and e."alit! 3='a6 dan ewaiban>?#

Citizenship can be a disadvantage "nder mandator! laws# (n e<ample is militar!

re."irement% or obligations to sel;deense# In Indonesia% or e<ample% citizens are re."ired to

 participate in sel;deense eorts b! the 1,+5 Constit"tion (rticle *0 verse 1 3='a6 dan

ewaian>?# @ome co"ntries also have higher ta< rates than others% ma6ing citizenship in

those co"ntries more economicall! challenging# -hro"gh internationall! shared racism% some

citizenship is treated with more weariness than others% beca"se o the trends and pre"dices

against that speciic race# 8hen adopting a citizenship% individ"als ma! also loose the health

care the!&re given b! their original co"ntries in oreign land% ma6ing living e<penses slightl!

more challenging# Aelocating the entit! o one&s lie also becomes challenging% and a h"rdle

to overcome# Changing citizenship also establishes a new set o r"les an individ"al has to

adapt into% and an! brea6ing o those r"les wo"ld lead to legal action#

instead o oc"sing on memorization o histor!% the re."irement o citizenship sho"ld be more

oc"sed on a need or patriotism# Citizenship applicants sho"ld "nderstand the essence and

meaning o the histor!% and sho"ld be re."ired to tr"l! ind p"rpose in adopting Indonesian

citizenship# -his wa!% citizens are g"aranteed to participate in the betterment o the nation%

which is the p"rpose o citizens "nder a government#
