Salisbury Figure Ground Plan with Green Areas

Traditional practice in western medicine has focused on

curing disease and sickness, providing for those already sick.

However in recent years an interest into more natural forms

of medicine has reawakened an approach that appreciates

genuine health and that cultivates physical and mental well being.

The project is set in Salisbury, a city which is characterised by

its natural environment and particularly the watermeadows,

which historically supported a web of local industry of sheep,

wool and barley.

As well as celebrating the history and agricultural heritage

of the site and the city, the scheme aims to restore the true

character to portions of the Churchfields site.

The scheme proposes an apothecary and physic garden designed

around two gardens. The building forms an enclosure and, in

adapting the typologies of the walled garden and the Benedictine

monastic cloister, adopts their metaphors of seclusion, place of

peace and sanctuary.

At one level the physic garden is enclosed by a cloister which

houses process areas for washing, drying and preparing the

medicines; while above this the main spaces of the apothecary

and tea room provide public amenities linked to a semi-enclosed

teaching garden.

View on Approach

The scheme is located in South-East corner of

the Churchfields site, at the confluence of the river,

Nadder island and the existing water-meadows.

The proposed building and supporting green

space and adjoining allotments replace an

industrial building and will be the root of the future

re-greening of the site.

The orientation of the building allows the sun to

penetrate all areas of the lower cloister growing

area, whilst also creating a notional axis and views

across the watermeadows to Salisbury Cathedral.

Building New CloisterAdditionAccessCloister

The building adapts the typology of the walled garden and

cloister to create an enclosed garden and growing space bounded

by a peripheral zone for the preparation and processing of the herbs.

The form of the building itself facilitates the self-contained

organisation and ritual-like process of the growing, screening,

cleaning, sorting and drying. The herbs are then used to create

natural medicines in the lab below the apothecary.

The physical enclosure provided by the architecture helps create

a feeling of intimacy and protection whereby the garden assumes

an atmosphere of sacredness and worship. Here nature, horticulture

and the ritual of growing and process contribute to the healing and

health benefits.

The design of the building is such the apothecary and

processing lab, which are central to the plan, mediate

between the two levels of garden. The lower, more formal,

garden, where the herbs are grown and cultivated for

medicinal use is linked to the processing areas and the lab,

where the herbs and natural medicines are ultimately

prepared for sale and treatment in the apothecary above.

The garden at the higher level linked to the apothecary,

workshops and cafe is used as a public space and teaching

garden. The smells and colours of the herbs and flowers in

this garden also provide an experiential threshold for those

visiting the apothecary.

Page 8: 150412 OB Portfolio

The timber is used throughout the scheme both structurally and as

a cladding material. The structural timber framing uses steel angle

connections at the joints to create the folded roof line while the vertical

elements delineate the cloister, creating the threshold between the garden

and internal herb processing areas. As well as being external, the timber

cladding is also used internally in certain areas for its visual and tactile

qualities.

In the lower cloister the exposed concrete floor is left unpolished with areas

of timber-formed concrete walls. This is also for aesthetic and tactility.

Materiality and Tactility

Page 9: 150412 OB Portfolio

At an urban scale, the tower serves as a beacon and

point of reference, much like Salisbury Cathedral spire

which can be seen from various locations within and

around the city.

At the building scale the tower serves for the drying of

herbs. The fully openable louvres in the facade facilitate

this process, drawing fresh air through the tower.
