Chinese International School Manila September 15, 2017
Dear Parents,
I am delighted to announce that CISM’s IB Diploma Candidates of 2017 achieved a 100% passing rate. Moreover, they attained an average score of 33.70, which is well above the IB World average of 29.95. Our school has consistently topped the world average since we launched the IB Programme in 2013. I therefore extend my congratulations to another successful graduating class and to all the teachers and parents who played a positive role in the cohort’s suc-cess. Additionally, I am pleased to share the good news that a group of CISM parents took the initiative to raise more than one million pesos for the provision of sunshades in our play-ground, our most popular lower-school facility. This enhancement will un-doubtedly make our outdoor recreation area safer and more enjoyable for our little ones. On behalf of the school, I express my heartfelt gratitude to all our supportive parents.

putting in for the benefit of students and parents. Their time and effort in
moderating and managing the Viber class groups will go a long way to-
wards strengthening the relationships between the home and school.
In the event that you have not been added to your class Viber group, kindly
advise your Parent Representative. Alternatively, you may email Ms. Kitin
Conchu at [email protected].
Parent Support Association
The CISM Parent Support Association (PSA) held its inaugural meeting
today together with the CISM President and Head of Schools. There was
great synergy as the team brainstormed ideas for promoting school spirit,
supporting community events, and fundraising for the benefit of our stu-
dents. The PSA Team is well on its way to setting the roadmap for this
school year. We wish them all the best!

EY/ES Student Corner My Violin Lesson
By: Julia Marie Cabilangan, Grade 3 BR
On Saturday I went to violin lessons (the location is in my local mall) and it was early in the morning. I got there by rid-
ing my grandfather’s white car. When we got there we went up the escalator to the third floor.
I had to warm up so I can perfect my song Gavotte, but in my classes it’s 1 hour every Monday . I got a few mistakes in
the song. My Teacher June is nice because she tells me what notes to play in the song. When you hear the song it feels
nice and soothing.
After that I was hungry because I did not eat breakfast but I ended up eating breakfast at home. I love my violin lessons
it is fun!

MS/HS Student Corner Rosh Hashanah in a Concentration Camp
By: Robert Peter Seth Bautista, Grade 11 PS
Dear brothers and sisters, I stand here before you today as one of you. A common man of our people, being
tested by the Almighty through all the trials and sufferings we face every day. Even though our situation is bleak
and many times we feel that all hope is lost, each one of us is living proof of just how resilient we, the chosen peo-
ple of God, are. Each one of us has survived another day. Each one of us has avoided the crematorium. Each one
of us has looked death in the eye and continued to live. We are evidence of how life is immortal through our faith
in our God.
There is no greater power than faith in times such as these. It is the only thing that allows us to retain our human-
ity and dignity that was so inhumanely stripped from us by the savages who believe that they are the master race
and live above all others. They’ve taken away every form of humanity we had. They have stripped us out of our
own clothes. They have taken away every precious thing we have so long worked for. They have torn off our reli-
gious relics that we love and cherish. They have pulled out our teeth. They have shaved our heads. And they have
done all this in the hope of taking our humanity and all our hope away. But they are wrong. All these material
things; our clothes, our necklaces, our teeth, and even our hair mean nothing. These things are all just symbols to
show how much love and faith we have in our God. What we truly need is our faith. Faith will find all that is lost,
return all that is stolen, and will punish those who have hurt us.
I know that some of you see what is happening to us as nothing more than the cruelty of humanity. And I can see
that some of you are starting to lose not only hope but also faith. Some of you say how can God be real? How can
God allow something as catastrophic and cruel like this happen, especially to his “chosen people?” Are we even
his chosen people? Does he even care? I have heard many people ask me these questions. And I, a common
Jew just like everyone gathered here today, have no right to pretend to know what God wants. To be honest, I too
question my own faith. But I realize, and you all should realize, that we, the chosen people of God, have been
tested before. The Egyptians once persecuted us in a very similar way thousands of years ago. Forced into slav-
ery and treated like animals. We were dehumanized and forced to obey every command said by these people. But
does anyone recall what happened? We were persecuted for centuries but we continued on. We continued to
keep our faith in God. We continued to believe that one day things would get better and we would be saved. We
hung on to the idea that we were the chosen people and that our sufferings and faith in God would one day award
us. And they did. God saved us. He sent the prophet Moses to free us. He parted the sea in half to bring us to the
Promised Land. Does this sound familiar? We are facing struggles that our ancestors have experienced. Who are
we to be questioning our own faith when our ancestors had gone through the same trials, the same tribulations
and not once questioned their own faith and God the almighty? We must allow our faith in God to be evident in
everything we do, even the smallest things. No matter what it may be, whether it be working in the factories or
even eating our everyday meals. Our faith in God will strengthen us in mind, body and spirit, allowing us to con-
tinue to live. This is how we will survive the storm that we are facing. This is how we will make it through these
trials and tests and live a proper human life that lives by the laws that God has placed on us and would have
wanted for us to follow.
Today is Rosh Hashanah. The beginning of the Jewish year. It is a New Year. It is our New Year. We must
change the way we have been looking at our own situation. Through the grace of God and our faith in him, we can
accomplish anything. Even something as cruel as this. We will live past this year and we will live past this persecu-
tion. But we must remember that everything we have, everything we know, all the friends and family we are sur-
rounded by, and especially the lives we live, are given to us by God. God is the Almighty and we must continue to
live life how he wants us to, based on the statutes and laws that we must live by. For by doing so, we will pass all
the trials that will come, and be awarded by God. We will once again be brought to the promised land where we
will never be persecuted and looked down upon. This is where we will truly be God’s chosen people.
