15 POEMS OF GUYANA By Dmitri Allicock
EVENING BY THE SEA
So beautiful an evening, calm and free
Ladies and Gentlemen, relishing the sea
Kind breeze tempers air of tropical sun
Cool and pleasant reprieve, day is done
West Indies Venice of protected coast
Eloquent attire of promenade that boast
Waistcoat, bow tie, hat & cane enshrine
Corset, ankle dresses& high collar refine
Etiquette of exotic plumes and passion
Glamourous wide brim hats of fashion
1920 image of time that takes you there
A Sunday evening by the seawalls, so dear
ECHOES OF HOOVES
Rhythmic hooves, echoes so sweet
Music of 1910 Georgetown’s street
Clipity clop of cart and buggy ride
Ironshod hooves of animal’s stride
Melody and dance of bygone song
Order of the day as they push along
Giddy up! Giddy up! Running fast
Resonating sounds of Guyana’s past
A beautiful woman- Georgetown 1890
SEAWALLS STROLL
The Atlantic is calm tonight
Gleams of the Capital’s light
Sturdy walls good for a walk
And listens to the breeze talk
Moon up high & does not hide
Salty shores meet gently tide
Slow stroll on historical ground
Echoes in wind floating around
People, which we never knew
Seawalls stands calm and anew
Look towards horizon in the east
And dream of world with peace
EAST OF DEMERARA RIVER
MOUTH
The lights glows brightly tonight
Tranquil River so calm & right
Twinkling stars & land of love
Respite for peace from above
Sparkles ignites songs that’ll stay
Rhythm of life, drifts along the way
A beauty of Guyana- 1934
MORNING WISH
Hope springs from the dawning light
Renewal of spirit and dreams so right
Beyond the horizon of Guyana’s calm
Onward to pristine lands without harm
Over green hills, the light points the way
Song birds calls and sings of a better day
CHERISH THEM
Smiling faces are like soothing rains
Bringing hope and oblivious to pains
New faces of Guyana and tomorrow
Such beautiful eyes, showing no sorrow
Guide them carefully & let them know
Cherish with love & watch them grow
OFF TO NURSERY SCHOOL
How do I tie my shoelace?
I must run & win this race
Make a loop…pull it tight
Then cross over to the right
OLD FRIENDS MEET
Childhood friends meet
In dear Guyana they greet
Good friends they still are
Remembering times so far
Passing time and losing touch
Things that matter so much
Thinking of friends & the days
Treasured times that’ll stay
Winding road of many bends
Destiny that’ll they meet again
WADING INTHE CREEK
Sitting in the creek, water between toes
Feeling the water and watching it flows
Songbirds of peace in a realm of hush
Just wading in the water without a rush
Sweet creek water shimmering and cool
Linden, Upper Demerara & nature’s pool
A DRY COCONUT
Coconut milk from my coconut tree
Maybe I will make some metamgee
Perhaps black eye pea’s cook- up rice
The bun- bun & fry fish will be nice
Maybe some coconut salara or buns
Sugar cake & pone before coconut is done
TASTES LIKE HOME
Corio with some bread
Or with biscuit instead
Peeled with sharp knife
A simple and good life
A cup of coffee or milo
Corio, for when you’re low
MORUCA SUNSHINE
Morning lush without any strife
Heartbeats rhythm of sacred life
Sunrise brings tranquility to stay
Blessing to you on this special day
DADDY’S HOME
A princess with tricycle pink
Watching shyly as she thinks
Heart beats with so much joy
A GEORGETOWN SCENE
Life can be jolly or rotten
Some things not forgotten
Hard to chew like a gristle
Don’t grumble, but whistle
Life does have a brighter side
Where that strength resides
EASTER GREETINGS
Waving palm branches & hailing their King
Didn’t know what coming days would bring
Historical Jerusalem greeting, that was nice
Yet, Jesus already knew that there was a price
Pilate’s court, the jeers, mockery and the end
