From Fr. JC Maximillian’s Desk

“In the Beginning” Genesis 2:4b-2:25 Last week I wrote about the first creation story in the Book of Genesis. That’s right, there is another creation story, which follows right after the first. I could go into how the scholars tell us that there are four “schools” of

writers/editors of the Book of Genesis, and that the two creation accounts come from two of those “schools.” However, seminary was a long time ago, and this is not a paper for class. Let’s just stick to what is important for us to know. First, the two creation accounts cannot be reconciled with each other historically nor scientifically. Again, Genesis is not a science book, it is a book about God, and the two accounts tell us some of the same things about God, but in two different ways. First, both accounts of creation envisions God as the sole creator, who purposefully undertook to create. Creation was not an accident. Both give humanity a place of honor in the scheme of creation, and both see humans – male and female – as social beings, created to exist in relationship with each other and with God. Now some of the differences. In the first creation account, it takes seven days, whereas in the second God does it all in one day. In the first account, man and woman are created at the same time, and in the second, God first creates man, and from man he creates woman. There is an interesting difference in the first lines of both. In the first, God makes the heavens and the earth, whereas in the second these get turned around, God makes the earth and the heavens. This is not a random difference. Rather it is a theological one. In the first creation story, the perspective is more from heaven to humanity, emphasizing our relationship with God. The second creation story gives more details about the creation of humanity, and the emphasis is more on our living in right relationship with each other. The key “theological” lesson of the second creation story is about our “calling.” A lot of times we tend to relegate “calling” to those being called to the priesthood, diaconate, or religious life, but the truth is that all people have a calling. While our gifts, talents, personality, experiences, etc. all shape our individual calling, that is secondary to our primary calling that all human beings share: to till and keep. When you read the second creation story this week, notice that God first notices that there were no plants on the earth and that there was no one to TILL it. God then goes on to create Adam from the dust of the earth and beaths life into him. Then he creates the animals, because it is not good for man to be alone, and when none of those were a fitting partner for man, God create woman. God then plants a garden and puts Adam and Eve in it to “till and keep” it. Does this mean we all have a calling to be farmers? No. The word “till” means more than just plowing. It means to serve, to act in a way that improves the lives of others. We are to use what we have for the good of others around us. We were created to SERVE. The word “keep” also means more. It means to watch over and guard. We are called to protect the garden – which as Pope Francis reminds us, is the whole earth – and protect one another. God formed each of us. He molded and shaped each of us. He has put us, or appointed us, to be where we are at to do his will in serving and protecting those around us.

VIDEO GAMES AND VIRTUAL REALITY PART II

Boys, the way God created them, have a great deal of energy. For them it is almost impossible to stay still (this is why it is very difficult for 90% of boys to go through a school day sitting for at least 50 minutes at a time seven times a day). They naturally want to be outside or in a gym running and playing games, climbing trees, building forts, hunting, swimming and chasing lizards and burning off energy. But, if you allow boys to enter and live in virtual reality playing competitive video games they stay sedative and glued to their smart phone, TV or control box. Girls are social beings too. They like to play house, dress up, play games, read and cook. Expose them to virtual reality and they tend to waste time talking about other people on social media leading to a deep emptiness inside. Laziness (sloth) is one of the capital sins. When we as parents allow our kids to become passive members of virtual reality we risk them becoming lazy, especially spiritually lazy and obese because they are living a sedative lifestyle. If you find that you are asking your children to do a chore and they are not doing it, even though they say they will, there is a strong possibility that this is due to laziness. And, video games and virtual reality can lead down this path if we don’t put limits on usage (or eliminate usage) and oversee the types of games being played. The use of electronics for video games and virtual reality may have some pros (such as a child’s ability to learn computer programming) but the cons should make parents re-consider boundaries and moderation for these games. A leading psychologist has warned that young men’s brains are being “digitally rewired” by use of video games and pornography. Dr. Philip Zimbardo states form his research that there is a “crisis of masculinity due to excessive use of video games and pornography…Our focus is on young men who play video games to excess and do it in social isolation—they are alone in their room. Now, with freely available pornography, which is unique in history, they are combining playing video games and, as a break, pornography.” (Man (Dis) Connected, 2016) The late Fr. Carota once said “Time = Life. Life = a limited amount of time God has destined for each one of us. We want to live our life for God, not for video games, sports or virtual relationships. Today decide to change. Today decide to free your children from their vices. Today, start to live a normal life. Your children will get angry at you and it will take some adjusting, but it is well worth it in the long run. They will get over it.” Here are some suggestions:

1. Don’t use electronics as a means to distract and discipline children. Try to keep children busy working, playing, creating, studying, reading good books and praying.

2. Try to do more activities as a family. Dinner could be a family affair not just Mom or Dad cooking. Give each child a responsibility. They love to learn how to do things such as cook.

3. Have limits and strict boundaries for video game usage. This includes friends that come over to visit. When they come to our household they are engaging in play and creativity not video games and electronics.

4. Encourage children to spend time each day outside (weather permitting). 5. Try to be a good example to your kids by being available each day to them without being distracted by cell

phones, computers or TV’s.

As I mentioned last week, video games and virtual reality are not intrinsically evil and there may be some good uses for each. However, they could also be a means to open the door to vice, laziness and sin. Since our time is limited on earth and God has given us as parents the responsibility of forming the souls of our children it would be prudent on our part to limit or eliminate video games and virtual reality. As Aaron Koblin once said, “Beware of addictive medicines. Everything in moderation. This applies to the internet and your sofa. The physical world is the source of all inspiration. Which is to say, if all else fails, take a family bike ride.” May God bless you! Rich Scanlon, Director of Religious Education

Week 3 – IN THE BEGINNING This is the third week of our series “In the beginning.” We are looking at the primeval history told to us in the book of Genesis. This text explains the origins of the universe because God created it and explains so much about our human condition. Genesis offers two accounts of creation. The first account emphasizes God’s infinite power. The second account of creation emphasizes God’s closeness with humanity. God breathes life into Adam, and he comes into existence. Then he personally forms Eve out of his side. The first account emphasizes God’s omnipotence, while the second emphasizes his intimacy with us. Together they give us a fuller appreciation of our Creator. Today, thank God that he both has the power to create the whole universe and that he intimately loves and cares for you.
