THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

Acts 2:14a, 36–41

1 Peter 1:17–25

Luke 24:13–35

Psalm 116:1-14

The Risen Lord Jesus Is with Us in Holy Baptism and in “the Breaking of the Bread”

From “before the foundation of the world” until heaven and earth pass away “the word of the Lord remains forever” (1 Peter 1:20, 25). This “living and abiding word of God” is the preaching of Christ Jesus, namely that God “raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory” (1 Peter 1:21). By this living word we “have been born again” to eternal life (1 Peter 1:23) and ransomed from our sinful and mortal life “with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18–19). This living word also calls us to repentance, to dying and rising in Holy Baptism “in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins” (Acts 2:38). In this, we receive the Holy Spirit “for you and for your children and for all who are far off” (Acts 2:39). Through the preaching of His Cross and Resurrection, Jesus draws near to bring us “into His glory” (Luke 24:26). As He opens the Scriptures, He opens our minds to comprehend “the things concerning Himself” (Luke 24:27) and He brings us to know Him “in the breaking of the bread” (Luke 24:35).

Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Brief silence O Father of the risen Christ, in Your Son’s appearance to the Emmaus disciples, He expounded the Scriptures and revealed Himself in the breaking of the bread. Grant us grace that we, too, may perceive Him as our Savior through His Word and rejoice to receive Him as the bread of life for the salvation of our souls in the Supper. By these gifts of Word and Sacrament, renew our piety this Eastertide that we may grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Heavenly Father, Your Son is

victor over death and the grave. Strengthen us during this Easter season to believe and live from the Good News, that even as He triumphed over death and the grave, so shall all who place their trust in Him… Lord of the nations, You have established good government to provide for our daily bread. Bless, direct and guide the leaders of our city, state and nation, that they may rightly wield the sword of justice, defend those who cannot defend themselves and hear the cries of all who are in any need. Make us instruments of peace as we live a life of fervent love for all of our neighbors and tell the Good News of salvation to those whom You have placed into our daily vocation…

Kind Father, according to Your great mercy, You have caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Your Son from the dead. Keep us steadfast in the hope of the inheritance that cannot fade, that is imperishable and that is kept in heaven for us, and give us a steadfast faith as we wait for the final resurrection of all flesh… All loving One, in Your Son’s ministry He brought healing to many with diseased and damaged bodies. Bless, comfort and sustain all who have requested our prayers [especially ______________ ]. Grant that they may look to You in every need, draw comfort from Your abiding

Word and daily rejoice in the Good News that Christ has died, Christ is risen and Christ will come again…  O Source of endless life, we thank You for the faithful who have gone before us and are with Christ. Bring us with them to share in the joys of the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting, that we may join in the eternal worship of the Lamb and ever cry, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain!” … Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Acts 2:14Peter Addresses the Crowd14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.Acts 2:36-4136 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”38 Peter replied, “Repent and

be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

1 Peter 1:17-2517 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

22 Now that you have purifiedyourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.[a] 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For,“All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;the grass withers and the flowers fall,25 but the word of the Lord endures forever.”[b]And this is the word that was preached to you.

Luke 24:13-35On the Road to Emmaus13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”They stood still, their faces downcast.18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”19 “What things?” he asked.“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.20 The chief priests and our rulershanded him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just

as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke itand began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.

Psalm 116:1-141 I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.2 Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.3 The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came over me; I was overcome by distress and sorrow.4 Then I called on the name of theLORD: “LORD, save me!”5 The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion.6 The LORD protects the unwary; when I was brought low, he saved me.7 Return to your rest, my soul, for the LORD has been good to

you.8 For you, LORD, have delivered mefrom death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling,9 that I may walk before the LORD in the land of the living.10 I trusted in the LORD when I said, “I am greatly afflicted”;11 in my alarm I said, “Everyone is a liar.”12 What shall I return to the LORD for all his goodness to me?13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of theLORD.14 I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people.

Acts 2:42–47; 1 Peter 2:19–25; John 10:1–10; Psalm 23

Acts 2:42-47

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.43 And awe[a

] came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

1 Peter 2:19-25

19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin,

neither was deceit found in his mouth.23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned tothe Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

John 10:1-10

I Am the Good Shepherd

10 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but theydid not understand what he was saying to them.

7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me

are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Psalm 23

The LORD Is My Shepherd

A Psalm of David.

23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.2     He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.[a]

3     He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness[b]

    for his name's sake.

4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,[c]

I will fear no evil, for you are with me;    your rod and your staff,    they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me    in the presence of my enemies;you anoint my head with oil;    my cup overflows.6 Surely[d] goodness and mercy[e

] shall follow me    all the days of my life, and I shall dwell[f] in the house of the LORD    forever.[g]
