California Sea LionCalifornia sea lions live in southeast Alaska to Central Mexico. They live for about 20-30
years. The pups are born in June and July. The pups weigh around 13 to 20 pounds.
The pups will nurse for about 5-6 months. California sea lions eat anchovies, sardines,
whiting, mackerel, rockfish, and market squid. Males are around 2.4 meters long and
weigh about 350 kilograms. Females are around 1.8 meters long and weigh about 100
kilograms. The scientific name for the California sea lion is Zalophus Californianus.

● Colors: tawny yellow, dark brown, black, light tan
● Litter Size: 1 pup or twins

Elephant SealElephant seals live in California and Baja California. They live 13-19 years. The
females are sexually mature at around 2 years of age. Elephant seals eat shark,
flatfish, ratfish, crab, squid, and octopus. They can grow to over 13 feet long and can
weigh up to 4,500 pounds.The scientific name for the elephant seal is Mirounga
Angustirostris.

rights, and higher standing in
the male hierarchy. Blood is
drawn during the fights.
Harbor Seal
Harbor seals live in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. They live in Alaska to Baja
California. Harbor seals live 20-30 years. Adult females usually mate and give birth to
one pup a year. Females become sexually active between 3-7 years. Harbor seals eat
squid, crustaceans, molluscs, and a variety of fish including rockfish, herring, flounder,
salmon, hake, and sand lance. They can reach up to 5-6 feet and can weigh up to 300
pounds. The scientific name is Phoca Vitulina.

Sea OtterSea Otters live in the coastal waters in the Central and North Pacific ocean. The like to
rest in kelp forests. Males live 10-15 years whereas females live 15-20 years. Sea otters
will be sexually mature between 2-3 years of age. Sea otters eat urchins, abalone,
mussels, clams, crabs, and snails. They are around 5 feet long and weigh up to 70
pounds. The scientific name is Enhydra Lutris. Sea otter eating a urchin

California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica)
The California Poppy enjoys moist weather. This plant mostly sprouts in the spring. This plant was
founded by a botanist named Albert Vuan Comisso (lived from 1781-1838) This man named the flower
after his friend Johan Frederick Eschscholtz. In the U.S. , it is also called the Eschscholtz Poppy. This
is California’s state poppy. Its flower part is 6 in. wide. The whole plant is 12 in. tall.The California
poppy petals can close on a cloudy day. In California, this poppy is sometimes called the Eschscholtz
Poppy. This flower is protected by the law, if you pick the flower, you can be arrested!

Douglas Iris (Iris douglasiana)The Douglas Iris prefers shade with moist soils. mostly along the coastlines of California and Oregon.
It comes in many colors such as purple, blue, white, sometimes even yellow. Has three large and
three small petals coming out of the center.It uses “Nodes” or growing centers that store food and can
send out roots and vertical stems to form a new plant. Seeds form in large capsules that turn from
green to brown and open at the top when the seed is ripe. The fibers of the Douglas Iris is as smooth
as silk.Fresh Iris Roots may be toxic. The Iris Douglas is a flowering perennial.

Foxtail (Setaria)
The Foxtail flower is bushy and bristly and put into groups called florets. Giant Foxtail: 3 to 7 inches. Yellow
Foxtail: 7/10 to 3 inches. Green Foxtail: 7/10 to 6 inches.They grow in dry and moist soil and roadsides,
ditch banks, fields, pastures, cropland, orchards, vineyards, gardens, and other disturbed sites.
● Foxtail are between 1 to 3 feet.
● They grow in loose clumps or sometimes singly
stems have bent base leaf blades that are are 4 to 15 inches
and usually have a spiral twist.

The Lupine plant comes in many different colors such as purple, indigo, magenta, and other shades of
purple. This plant disperses seeds using pores that hold somewhere from 2-12 seeds. After a while, when
these pods are ripe, the pod opens up and the seeds fall out. This is a plant liked by many people to grow
in their gardens. These plants take the average time to sprout. This pant is loved by many gardeners to
have. But it is very gentle and it cannot be transplanted. This plant has a tap root and it does not survive if
its tap root is disturbed, It won’t survive.

Poison Hemlock(Conium maculatum)
All parts of the Poison Hemlock are toxic and both animals and humans will get rashes when in
contact with the juice.The Poison Hemlock appear from June to August. A single Poison Hemlock may
produce over 38,000 seeds. Although only a few of the seeds may remain there for 5 years and
successfully grow. Poison Hemlock doesn’t have a habitat because it grows everywhere.
● 1/12 to 1/6 inch across
● Mostly have 5 white petals
● Form umbrella shaped clusters that are 1 to 3 inches in diameter

Ripgut Grass(Bromus diandrus)
A tubular sheath distinguishes ripgut brome seedlings from most other grass seedlings.Each individual
flowers have tiny, rough teeth like leaves that can injure livestock and pets.
● This weed comes mostly in green, but this plant can have maroonish blossoms.
● Ripgut Grass are between 1 to 2 inches.
● Open branching flower head resemble that of oats.
● Large spikelets with needlelike awns.

Wild Oats (Avena sativa)
Wild Oats are a pest for people. It grows in grassland, crop fields, orchards,
vineyards, gardens, roadsides, and other disturbed sites. Wild oats have a
unique way to diapers seeds. The oats dispers the seeds using little pockets
called florets. once these florets land in the ground, They use the grounds
moisture to roll around and stretch the floret open causing the seed inside the
pocket to come out. This plant is a short-lived perennial.

Wild Rye (Elymus canadensis)
The wild rye lives all over Canada, and some of the U.S.Long and furry on the end.The seeds of the
wild rye are in the furry hairs on the end of the plant that blow away. This plant is a Perennial It is good
at resprouting and is only living for a year. The wild rye comes in many uses to people.

Yarrow(Achillea millefolium)
By seed and by sprouting from underground horizontal, creeping stems (rhizomes).Bloom takes place
from March through September. Small white or yellow flowers cluster into dense, flat-topped flower
heads at the ends of stems.
● It lives in places such as those in coastal bluffs, sand dune, salt marshes, grasslands, semi-
deserts, and alpine areas.
● Yarrow are between 12 inches to 18 inches.
● Can come in colors such as creamy yellow, lavender, or white.
