Organisers of the New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards 2012; Jeanette Swift, Harry Morris and Clare Davies. Nominations for this year’s awards are now open. To nominate your fa-vourite hospitality venue or person, see the form on page 13. Photo: Andrew Board.

The hospitality awards are back for 2012 with nominations opening this week. The New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards rec-ognise the best bars, restaurants, chefs, bar staff and maître d’s in the region. To nominate your favourite venue or person fill out the form on this page and send it away to the ad-dress on it or drop it off to the Waimea Weekly office. Once nominated, readers will vote for their favourites via voting forms to be printed in Waimea Weekly, with the winners being announced at a glitzy ceremony at the Trafalgar Centre on May 14.The awards are organised by Hospi-tality New Zealand and the Restau-rant Association of New Zealand.Hospitality NZ regional manager Jeanette Swift says the awards are always popular and they encourage

people to make sure their favourite venue is nominated. “The awards are really prestigious and because we only hold them every two years people do get quite excited about them. So it’s important that people nominate who they think deserves to be recognised for their efforts.”Categories include best waiter/maître D, best bar person, best bar, best cafe, best restaurant, most outstanding ambience and service, most outstanding ethnic cuisine, most outstanding entertainment venue and most outstanding sub-urban venue. There will also be categories for best chef but these will be judged by experts as opposed to voting from the public.Nominations close Friday March 30 at 12 noon, so cut out the nomi-nation form on page 13, fill it out and make sure your favourite ven-ue is up for an award this year.

Nominations open for hospo awards

This week we have a story about Kopi Luwak coffee which comes from the poo of a cat-like animal. Would you be game to try it?

Kathryn Preston, Richmond.

“No, but that’s just because I’m a tea drinker. I’d only drink a mocha.”

James Flack, Richmond.

“Not at all because it’s been through an animal. I don’t usually stay clear of disgust-ing food, but definitely not that.”

Ruth Woodhouse, Richmond.

“Yeah I’d try anything. We eat all sorts of weird things now so it’s not a big issue.”

Lindy Dalton, Richmond.

“I’d try it if I didn’t know where it came from.”

Police in Tasman District have become aware of forms being circulated via fax asking people to provide personal details, including bank account numbers, signa-ture and copies of passports to the “Inter-nal Revenue Service”.Police advise anyone receiving a request for such information not to provide the

information and not to respond in any way.Police believe the request is part of a scam aimed at defrauding respondents.Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of this type of offending should contact their local police station immedi-ately.

Police warn fax usersbe made by voters in Nel-son and Tasman, each re-gion needing to vote for the proposal. Voting packs will start to be sent at the end of this month.

Tim says his position has been to try to inform voters and not be biased one way or the other. He says having read the information on peoples’ rates he does not believe that the savings will be significant enough to warrant the costs.

An independent accountant has reviewed a pro-posed set of accounts by the owners of Waimea Village and says he cannot see any need for an increase more than inflation.Owners Michael and Caro-lyn Wright are seeking to raise the monthly service fees they receive from the village’s 171 home owners from $125 to $284. The fee was raised by 54 per cent just last year, from $80 per month. The accountant is understood to have reviewed all the prices quoted in the proposed accounts given by the Wright’s to the Waimea Village Residents Com-mittee and cannot see where the extra money the Wright’s say they need to stop the village making a loss, is needed.

The resident’s committee is still vowing to fight the proposal and is still refusing to go to arbitra-tion, fearing Michael and Carolyn will go back

“year after year” to seek more money from the vulnerable population at the village.TDC councillor Kit Maling has been working for the commit-tee, trying to find a resolution with the owners. He agrees with the accountant’s assess-ment and says the price should increase only at the rate of in-flation. “The current price was

set by an arbitrator just ten months ago, anything over inflation is over the top,” he says.Michael Wright says the increases are needed to stop the village running at a loss and the resi-dents don’t fully understand the situation.

A public display of love has prompted one local man to ask for the cupid to return and put the rocks used to make make a sign back where they came from. The sign made in the Waimea Inlet in front of the Richmond Racecourse was described as “environmental vandalism” by a Coastline Cleanup volunteer. The estuary is described as “unique” and “massive asset for our region”. The volunteer Ian Jonson says he has removed 457 tyres from the Tasman Bay shoreline and he hopes the artist of the sign will return to put the rocks back.

High flyers head for MotuekaHope man Bob Wagner doesn’t go for a Sunday drive, he walks out to his shed and pulls out his aircraft for a Sunday fly instead.Whether it’s a 20 minute play around the skies of Wakefield and the Moutere or a 30 minute flight to Blenheim, there isn’t one week that Bob doesn’t get out in his plane for a fly. This weekend, though, Bob is heading to Motueka, along with hundreds of the country’s microlight pilots, for the RAANZ National Fly In.Fly ins are held annually and it was only four years ago since the Motueka Airfield last held the event. Since then it has been in Stratford, Masterton, Rangiora and oth-er central areas of New Zealand. It is hosted by the Motueka Aero Club in conjunction with the Nelson Microlight Club. The National Fly In gathers all of the pilots together for a series of challenges, educa-tional workshops and a chance to discuss rules, regulations, microlight law and ex-periences and is going to be held on March 16, 17 and 18.Whilst it’s recreational, Bob says plenty of ideas get thrown around and you don’t go away without learning something new.Bob learnt to fly in the late 1960’s when microlights hadn’t even been invented. In-stead, Cessnas and Pipers were the most popular. “In those days I liked to fly and I liked to sail boats. I don’t know what

young people wanted to do these days, but I want to fly and flying is fun,” says Bob. “Have you ever been flying?”Well my answer at the time was no, but ten minutes later and I was heading down Wagner Airfield into the sky, and it was easy to see how Bob got hooked.Microlights, which Bob described as “an-other word for a plane,” refers to light-weight, one or two person fixed-wing

aircraft. They will outperform a two-seat Cessna. “They will leave it for dead, both in speed and getting onto the ground. Eve-rything will be better than in a Cessna.”They are not known for their “across the country” capabilities, but Bob has man-aged to get as far as Hamilton in his micro-light. The majority of participants heading to Motueka will do so by plane. Surprisingly it is not an expensive exercise

flying from one city to another in your own plane. A four-seat Cessna will chew up 55-65 litres of fuel an hour. But a two-seat microlight will only use up 15-17L an hour, meaning just about anywhere in the South Island is within reach in less than two hours. “If you want to go for a Sunday afternoon drive in your plane it will use a lot less fuel, you go a hell of a lot further and it’s more interesting.”

Service station drops fuel price by 10 centsSouthfuels in Spring Grove is drop-ping its petrol prices by 10 cents a litre this Friday, March 16.The special price is part of Southfuels’ Super Friday. The special will run from 7am through to 6pm.If you spend $50 you go into the draw to win $100 worth of fuel.A privately owned company, South-fuels took over the South Island rural distribution of Shell bulk fuels and lubricants in 2006.So far eight South-fuels 24/7 service sites have been es-tablished in the Upper South Island.

Tasman coffee drinkers will have the opportuni-ty to taste the famous Kopi Luwak coffee, which sells for $60 a cup in the United States and $40 a cup in Melbourne. But if the price of the world’s most expensive coffee hasn’t knocked you off your chair wait until you hear how it’s made. Kopi Luwak is produced by the Asian Palm Civ-et animal – which looks like a cross between a cat, a possum and a ferret – that chooses to eat cherries off a coffee tree and then dispose of the green beans. The animal chooses only the ripest cherries and manages to pass them through its body intact with the coffee hulls still attached. While in its digestive system a combination of the stomach en-zymes that break down the cherry from around the green bean inside (this is usually a human job and takes a huge amount of time and methods) produces such a unique flavoured coffee. It’s said to be very mild and spicy. Hayden Thompson, of Pomeroy’s, says 5kg of the coffee was imported to New Zea-land recently and he was able to get a hold of a 1kg bag of it. He says he will be roasting it this week and host-ing an open night where people can come and taste it for a reasonably modest amount of around $20 per cup.

Rainbow riders raise $7800It took a lot of pedalling to get 40 bikers from St Arnaud to Han-mer but in doing so they raised $7800 for bible distribution amongst the South Pacific. The Rainbow Ride, which raises funds for the Bible Society, is al-ways a big challenge for both rid-ers and bikes and this year’s effort took between six and ten hours for the keen cyclists.Along the way, on a beautiful Saturday, there was plenty of op-portunity for riders to enjoy the company of others and to take in the amazing landscapes. They are hoping to double the numbers next year.

The recent closing of the Wilkes Con-struction Company, a business estab-lished in the early 1900’s, brings memo-ries of the pride, strength, passion and loyalty that went with the building of the homes over the long period the firm was represented in Richmond. My father Phil Kearns worked for the firm as a carpenter/foreman for much of his working life and with pride. I know that Dad took great care in his work and it was often that you would hear of requests from people having houses built by Wilkes, “we want that Kearns man on our house!”It was said at Dad’s funeral service that if there were four nails to be put in he would put in six. This standard I am sure was passed on over the years to the many long serving Wil-ke’s employees who worked alongside him.In 1988 well known real estate person the late Alan Drum-mond was offering “for sale”, the house at 146 Queen Street Rich-mond, built 60 years prior with per-sonal skill and sense of style. The house was originally built for Gilbert (Gillie) Wilkes one of the son’s of the founder of

W.E Wilkes. Alan and his wife had lived in the house for 19 years and with mixed feelings reflecting on how it had held many precious memo-ries, the days when their four children were growing up.At the time Alan bought the home, there had only been three other

families live there.Every metre of timber was per-sonally selected by Gillie, having been put aside before building commenced. There was Matai, Oregon and heart Rimu selected, there were no wooden piles but instead enormous concrete piles erected forming a continuous concrete foundation. There was

an upstairs attic measuring 60 feet long and with tongue and groove match lin-ing, it had potential to convert in to a huge games room.In keeping with the love of timber , Gil-

lie used Matai for all the internal floors as well as the porch a wonderful area for sitting and enjoying the tranquillity of the home in general. There had been another house built likely at a similar time, it was in Edward Street and of well thought out style and solid construction and that had been for Howard Wilkes, Gilbert’s brother. Unfortunately it was lost to fire at least 15 or more years back. There are many homes in Richmond baring testament to that well earned satisfaction people received when it was built by W.E Wilkes.

Peter Kearns.

The gracious home in Queen St was built with style and space in mind.

“The Bright Field” by R.S. ThomasI have seen the sun break through

to illuminate a small field for a while, and gone my way

and forgotten it. But that was the pearl of great price, the one field that had

the treasure in it. I realize now that I must give up all that I have to possess it. Life is not hurrying

on to a receding future, nor hankering after an imagined past. It is the turning

aside like Moses to the miracle of the lit bush, to a brightness

that seemed as transitory as your youth once, but is the eternity that awaits you.*

When was the last time you slowed down, turned aside like Moses and sought that pearl of great price? For that matter, in your life right now, if you pondered and reflected on it, what would that pearl of great price really be? I once read of a doctor who was work-ing 80 hours plus a week. This doctor realised going so hard out was compro-mising his health, his family time and his relationship with God. Could these three things; health, family and rela-tionship with God, be pearls of great price worth turning aside for? As I look around at folk in Richmond and Nelson, many do seem to be rushing about for “a receding future” or “an imagined past”. Peo-ple rushing about when they don’t need to. Yes-

terday Apple announced the 3rd generation iPad, car companies never cease to announce their lat-est model, everywhere there is a new kind of this, a new kind of that – and yet we don’t need any of them. They are only a part of “a receding future” or “an imagined past”, and the rushing towards them just harms health, family and our relation-ship with God. One of the things I love about Jesus Christ is the way he was late to things – once so late that the person he had gone to visit had died before he ar-rived. But he implied it didn’t matter, rather it was important to turn aside and relate to the people along the way (and of course on arrival he prayed for the dead and decaying Lazarus who rose to

live on for a number of years). But in our region, sadly, people are not slowing down and turning aside like Moses to “the miracle of the burning bush”, and in the process they are missing out on the pearl of greatest price – Jesus Christ. Easter will soon be upon us – and the greatest ever miracle – the selfless action of God, his allowing himself to die on a bloodied cross, his de-scent to the afterlife, and three days later his bodily resurrection. Jesus Christ is the greatest ever pearl, the greatest ever “miracle of the burning bush”, that everyone who turns aside to him is enriched. Be encouraged to

meet Jesus Christ – the sun that breaks through and warms the soul. *R.S. Thomas, ‘The Bright Field’, in Collected Poems, 1945–1990 pg302.

In 2009 an article was written about local women embarking on the jour-ney to become midwives. They made up the first cohort of the Nelson/Tas-man satellite of the joint CPIT/Otago Polytechnic Bachelor of Midwifery Degree. The course was 50% theory and 50% practical with the majority of the practical placements under-taken with self-employed midwives in the area and in Nelson Hospital. However, there were frequent trips to Christchurch and placements on the North Island and even as far as Bali! After three years of hard work, jug-gling commitments and reliance on the kindness, and understanding of their families and friends they have joined the New Zealand Register of Midwives. Hannah Straker, Kelly Mahuika, and Angela Hayes are now self-employed midwives caring for

women throughout pregnancy, la-bour, and birth, and up to six weeks after birth. They are all participants in the Mid-wifery First Year of Practice Program developed by the New Zealand Col-lege of Midwives to support graduate midwives. They also feel fortunate to be well supported by the strong col-legiality of the local midwifery com-munity.They would like to thank all the mid-wives for sharing their time, knowl-edge, and skills with them, but spe-cial heartfelt thanks goes to all the women who have been so generous over the past three years in allowing Hannah, Kelly, and Angela to learn from them and their whanau. They feel it has been a real privilege and important in shaping their midwife-ry practice today.

AGRICULTURAL DAYThe Inaugural Leigh Barton

Friday 16 March 10am to 6pm Leigh Barton Farm (entrance off Foxhill Cemetary Road, Foxhill)

The inaugural Leigh Barton Agricultural Day will be drawing in crowds this Friday, the cul-mination of months of effort and excitement from those involved, including Julian Stone, who has organised the event.Dozens of businesses have eagerly put up their hands to be involved, eager to run stalls and give demonstrations of their products or farming equipment on the day. It’s a great op-portunity for the stallholders as well as the public; with free entry and free car parking it’s sure to bring people through the gate giv-ing them the opportunity to see the impres-sive pieces of machinery in action and talk to those with experience and knowledge. The event will showcase a huge range of ma-chinery including chainsaws, tractors and lawnmowers. Gough, Gough and Hamer will be covering all things logging, and Digitec will be on site to talk about computers and ru-ral communications. Harris Training Servic-es can even renew your Growsafe Approved Handler certificates on site. It’s not all going to be your everyday farming equipment either. PK Engineering are work-

ing on a innovative new piece of machinery that they hope to reveal to the public for the first time at the show. Julian says that next year he hopes to put a greater focus on in-ventions, intending for the Leigh Barton to

join the likes of similar shows in Auckland and Christchurch. The show will be run on Julian Stone’s own prop-erty (Leigh Barton Farm) in Foxhill, with entry from the end of Foxhill Cemetery Rd. Signs will help direct show goers, with plenty of parking at the event ground. Run-ning from 10am through to 6pm this Friday March 16, it’s a great way to do some personal or pro-fessional research into what’s available or com-ing up in the agricultural and horticultural indus-tries.Julian’s intention is to

It could barely fit in the lounge but now that Margaret Lanks-hear has finished a monster 18,240 piece puzzle, it’s des-tined for the wall.Measured at five square me-ters, the 70-year-old Stoke resident claims the jigsaw to be the second largest in the world available for commer-cial purchase.Margaret is keen on making puzzles and her Richmond family thought the 18,000 piece one, bought off a lady in Queenstown, would have stumped her. But with their help every time they visited, the puzzle was no match for Margaret, despite one hiccup – there was a piece missing.Numerous urgent phone calls to family, Margaret thought the piece was gone forever. Single puzzle pieces can be bought online if you have misplaced it. But when it was located in Germany, Margaret em-barrassingly found it under her bed.The puzzle depicts four well known-landscapes from around the globe.Margaret did the puzzle in four quar-

ters and joined them together, with a large group of relatives on Thursday. “Once you got the first one done you knew the run of the ropes,” she says. “It’s nice to see them together. It’s go-ing to be expensive wall paper.”Her next challenge is another puz-zle given to her by a family member. It is a puzzle that looks like baked beans. “I put that one on hold, be-cause it was a lot harder.”

bring more young blood into the industry, and to raise awareness of its importance. Nel-son is a farming community, relying on our farms and or-chards to bring money into our economy. It’s necessary to maintain that and to keep knowledge and practices up to date, as well as ensur-ing the future generations of farmers.Among those getting in-volved with the day is the Young Farmers Club, with the Tapawera branch com-ing along to try to boost membership. The Club isn’t exclusive to farmers, anyone between the ages of 15 and 30 can be involved, all you need is a love for the land and a willingness to be active in your community. You will have the chance to participate in some exciting events and meet people from all over the country. With over 90 clubs set up around the country it’s a great way to get involved socially and learn some great new skills, not all of which are specific to ag-riculture. Come speak to the folk at the Young Farmers Club stall on the day, and visit www.youngfarmers.co.nz for more information.

Julian is pleased with the level of interest and involvement from businesses for the first show.

He intends for it to become an annual event, with next year including more and var-ied displays including horti-cultural displays. The day is inspired by the New Zealand National Agricultural Fiel-days, but is more “hands on,” like in the event’s early days. There is no set schedule for events; if you’re interested in seeing a particular piece of machinery in action you can approach the stallholder, who will most likely be hap-py to give a demonstration. There are still stalls avail-able, so if you’re interested in bringing your business along, you can take this op-portunity to interact directly with your customer base. Interested parties can con-tact Julian on 541 9653. The whole event is not for profit, with the only intention be-ing to boost the industry and provide a great day out.

lovers should “watch this space,” for updates on how to get involved. The spacious dining area has seating for up to 50, with a glass front opening to the sunny street and outdoor seating, so that even dur-ing the lunch rush the cafe doesn’t feel crowded. Empha-sis is put on quick, efficient service, while not feeling rushed. The cafe has built up a regular customer base due to their friendly and personal service. Eddie, Del, Cornelia, Vanessa and Lauren make up the team, who work at the cafe every day, and enjoy get-ting to know their customers and the community on an in-dividual level.Eddie and Del have been a part of the community for six years. Prior to this, they live in Auckland where they owned and ran four successful cafes. They enjoy being a part of the welcoming and friendly Richmond community.. Eddie says they were drawn to the area because of that. “Richmond’s got a great feel about it.”The couple take every opportunity to be involved or give something back. They make an effort to support local producers, as well as the local crea-tive talent. The walls of the cafe are decorated with landscape photography, which serves the double purpose of creating an inspiring ambi-ance while displaying the works of a local pho-tographer, all of which are for sale. The couple are happy to be approached by those wishing to display their works and will even host an opening night to help promote them. The endeavour has proved successful so far, in the short time the initiative has been running, many of the works on display have already found delighted buyers.Lydia’s Cafe was an award winner last year, plac-ing first in their category. Eddie and Del intend

to keep and improve on that high standard, as they have also experienced success with the cafes they had owned in Auckland. They will maintain the superior level of quality coffee, food and service with the help of their dedicated and talented staff.Lydia’s Cafe is centrally located on the main stretch in Richmond, number 265 Queen St, opposite the library. With plenty of free parking, behind the cafe, you can come in and spend an afternoon catching up with friends and enjoy the quality food and coffee.Eddie and Del look forward to welcoming their regular customers and meeting new ones.

Chocolate Chip Garden Bark Plus - Barnyard Compost Special (March Only)

MARCH SPECIALHello again. Like all of you I am sitting here under yet more cloud waiting very patiently for the ”Indian Summer” that is always Nelson in March. As they say in the Tui ad’s; “Yeah Right.”Still, we should not grumble – the North Island is really get-ting the brunt of this weather – and maybe we will have a nice mild winter.I am making regular forays down the back path to the black-boy peach tree and giving the fruit a little squeeze to see if it is time to harvest and also we are really happy to see the quince tree colouring up and fruit starting to turn that beautiful gold-en colour. If I am sounding just a little desperate - things are grim in the Hollis household! We are down to the last jar of quince jelly, the paste is all gone and there are only two jars of preserved blackboy peaches in the cupboard. This is cutting things way too fine – just as well the trees are laden with fruit. I feel that this weekend will her-ald the start of the March bottling and jelly season. What are you still eating from your vege garden? We are still

harvesting tomatoes, courgettes (zucchini), runner beans, silverbeet, last of the beetroot has been pulled, lettuce, spring onions and herbs. Not too bad but some things are slow to ripen and powdery mildew is hitting the leaves of some plants quite badly.

• In the flower garden Autumn can be a disconcerting time for novice gardeners. Perennials are start-ing to die down, most annuals are past their best (my petunias were looking fabulous until the last big

winds!) and impatient gardeners (like me) can’t wait to get rid of the mucky bits and replace with a nice bit of colour! Impa-tiens (busy lizzies), tuberous begonias, bedding begonias and potted colour like the vinca’s, zinnias, marigolds etc can fill gaps and will flower for many weeks yet. Gazanias are another big bold flower that does well in a sunny spot and is pretty wind tolerant.• This is a good time of year to take stock of what you can change and how you can improve the colour and texture around the garden for next season.• Look at the borders and choose plants that give a bit of a colour boost like Heucheras, such as Lime Ricky, Amethyst, and Palace Purple. Tiarellas are good value also as they have a lovely variegated foliage as well as the fine white stems of fluffy flowers.• Silver leafed brunneras, “Jack Frost “ (perennial forget-me-nots) pulmonarias, and scabiosa, all have good form and fo-liage that lasts all year through and they really do not need much attention. Just a trim and tidy of the lower leaves is all that is required.• Now is time to trim the leaves of your hellebores – winter roses, to ensure they are not harbouring aphids and mealy-bug. Cut back lavenders, pelagoniums, and tidy hydrangeas that are starting to look a bit tired. Also deadhead geraniums to keep them flowering longer and also keep feeding with a liquid plant food and Seasol to encourage stronger plants for the next season. Autumn is the best time for planting larger

trees and shrubs and also the best time for transplanting smaller trees or shrubs that are looking unhappy or just not thriving in their garden position. Before moving a plant however, it is best to check with your garden center as some things move better than others. Natives do not like being shifted as a general rule but Rhodos, camellias, hydrangeas, maples etc can be moved with care and will do very well.

Q: I was asked by a gentleman last week when was the best time to plant his broad beans.

A: You can start preparing your garden area any time from now until the end of April. You need to dig your garden over to a spade depth and add some good compost, blood and bone and sheep pellets. If you plant now you will have to ensure you water well and also keep a wary eye out for pests which are still enjoy-ing the warmer conditions. I tend to wait until the end of March and had a good crop last year.Have a good weekend in the garden, Robyn

What do I need to change over to Freeview? If your TV has Freeview built in you will need a UHF aerial or a satellite dish with a set top box.

How do I know which system to use? Call the Freeview Man to discuss your options. Can I use the old dish on my roof? Can I record a series of a specific programme? Yes, for exam-ple you can record every episode of Coro St without having to press record, it does it automatically.

BabySpace - Lynda RichardsWhy do you only provide for children up to three?Children of this age have specific physical, emotional and social needs. These are best met in an environment that is secure and predictable while still flexible enough to offer the challenges they need to build and practice new skills. BabySpace is very well-resourced and has a stable team of trained teachers who get to know the children and their families very, very well. What are the children actually learning here?At this age we see big changes in the chil-dren’s sense of autonomy – this growing independence comes as they develop phys-ical and verbal skills, and increasing social competencies like turn-taking, problem-solving and supporting others. Our care-

fully chosen resources, safe environment and small group size support the children to fulfill their own learning potential. What advice do you have for parents looking for a centre?Quality early childhood education is close-ly linked to small group size, positive rela-tionships between children and the adults in the centre, and a low turnover of staff. When parents visit a centre they need to al-low enough time to be able to observe and ask questions about these aspects of centre life.Parents who are looking for a small group environment with a high teacher/child ratio and a very special atmosphere are welcome to visit Lynda and the team at Ba-bySpace or see the website at www.babys-pacenelson.co.nz

What benefits do customers receive by going to you instead of someone who is not qualified? We are locally owned and operated. Our customers deal with the owners and Jay is a Licensed Builder. We have structural and workmanship warranties on our buildings. What sets you apart from other busi-nesses in your field? We are part of a successful National Franchise. We manufacture our own product. We offer ‘a consent to comple-tion process’ and have tried, tested and true systems to enable a hassle free expe-rience for every client.

How did you get into this line of busi-ness?Jay has worked within the Spanbuild group for over 15 years and is a quali-fied builder. Owning and operating our own franchise was a natural next step in putting all this experience into market place. What is the most satisfying part of the job?We love to provide the best solution for each client’s storage / shed requirements, customising a building which is aestheti-cally pleasing, cost effective and resolves your specific needs.

Do you do one off ‘House for Sale’ signs? Yes, we can do House Sale and Open Home signs tailored to suit your needs right down to the colour, size, photos and the perfect wording. Can you take sign writing off cars?We are happy to take any graphics off cars or we can give you some helpful tips if you are wanting to do it yourself. Can you visit me for a quote?Yes most certainly. Just give us a call to organise a time that suits you bestDo you design and make banners and

flags?Banners and flags are becoming increas-ingly popular and are a great eye catch-ing way to advertise. If you are thinking about a banner or flag come in and talk to us about designs and costs.Do you do car bumper stickers?Yes we can do car bumper stickers, also car For Sale stickers. Plus we do boat names and numbers. Can you reproduce signs from a pho-tograph?Yes, in fact will do our best to meet any of your signage needs.

Does your compost have weed, seeds, diseases or toxins in it? The hot temperature reached during our composting process kills all weeds, seeds, diseases and toxins.Do you use “fillers” eg, bark in the com-post? No we do not use any fillers. You are buy-ing pure organically produced compost. Can I plant straight into the compost, or will it damage my seedlings? You can plant straight into the compost. It has cooked for two year and is just like black soil and causes no damage to your seed-lings.The garden is mostly clay soil, how will the compost help?

Our compost works on the clay and heavy soils breaking them down. It is full of nu-trients, feeding your garden for up to two seasons. With natural compost will I have to add chemical fertilisers? There is no need to add anything. Our compost is full of nutrients and will feed your garden for up to two seasons. What is the difference between the fine and chunky compost? It is the same compost, they are just dif-ferent screen sizes. The chunky compost gives great aeration and drainage and is used for filling gardens and planting into. The fine compost is for spreading and dig-ging in. We stock both grades.

How do your customers benefit from calling you as an expert instead of one of your com-petitors? We pride ourselves in both our transparency and flexibility. It is paramount that we cater for each client’s specific needs and wishes, and to have a level of honesty and trust in order for the client to know we are going to give them the best experience possible when building their new home. They will receive a high level of service and workmanship from experienced craftsmen. Garry oversees all projects and therefore the client is dealing with him directly for the duration of their project. What is the most common question you get asked? One of the common questions we are asked during the initial contact with a new client is

whether we use ‘set plans’. The answer is simple. We meet with potential clients and establish what they would like in a home and go from there. There are no set plans and therefore no limits or constrictions within which we have to operate. We build for a number of people who have plans already in place with either an ar-chitect or designer. We also have a number of architects and designers we work closely with when people come with a basic idea of what they would like to build. How did you get into this line of business? Garry has over 20 years of experience in the industry and has a real passion for building and for working with people. In 2007 the op-portunity came up to buy Tasman Homes, an established local construction company, with a great long standing reputation.

What benefits do customers receive by go-ing to you instead of someone else? From my experience as an Arbitrator I un-derstand what will be needed to resolve your case and ensure that the correct approach is taken. Any advice given will be provided based on sound established principals. What sets you apart from other businesses in your field? Because I run and own the business you deal directly with me. Overturning an ACC de-cision can require a degree of technical and legal analysis that is beyond someone un-trained in the field. In addition, because the work I do for you is reviewed and supervised by Advice and Advocacy Bureau Limited (AAB), arguably the best qualified and most

professional advocacy service in New Zea-land, if I can’t give you an answer straight away I know where to find the answer. What is the most satisfying part of your job? ACC is a large organisation that sometimes makes the wrong decision disenfranchising hard working New Zealanders in the process. I am passionate about getting those poor de-cisions overturned so where possible people can be returned to work or they can receive the surgery denied them. No one wants to be stuck at home, injured and unable to enjoy an active life. For me the satisfying part is in ensuring that people in this position are returned to the best possible position going forward.

Young netballers meet their idolsThe Haier Appliances Central Pulse were in town on Saturday to meet, greet and train Nelson’s youngsters. The trip was part of the ANZ Community Roadshow, which is being held throughout the country this month.Sixty girls took part in the morning session with 80 partici-

pating in the afternoon. The girls were involved in shooting challenges, passing challenges and one on one defence. There was also time afterwards to get photos and autographs from their favourite players.Silver Fern legend Temepara George also made the trip as an

ambassador for ANZ.Nelson Netball is alligned with the Pulse, and Nelson Netball’s development manag-er Trish Lowe says it is important that they continue their relationship as it gives the re-gion’s players something to strive towards. “Absolutely, it’s fantastic. With our weekend behind us, bringing us a beautiful Saturday to spend time outdoors, and a lazy rainy Sunday where it was the perfect time to catch up on a good book or in my case filing cupboards with baking and catching up with family, I hope you are both rested and ready to enjoy this week. My focus for the week-Sunglass Style. I recently purchased an additional pair of sunglasses, needing a sports style for running. I discussed my needs with Sophie, who manages the store and she gave me fantastic advice with a few choices that would suit my needs. The pair I choose are absolutely perfect in suitability, look, and comfort. The girls in this team are knowledgeable on both style and specialty, and the selection to choose from of Dior, Bolle, Adidas and Serengetti to name a few is superb. With the sun setting lower in the sky in the afternoons, now is a great time to head on in to Sunglass Style and update your look.At Fashion Island our stores and team aim above the mark to hit the mark.Have a fabulous week and I look forward to your visit at our Fashion Island. Wolves and Rabbits impress at Nelson Nines TournamentIt was two of the out of town teams that dominat-ed the inaugural ProRugby League Nelson Nines League Tournament with Aranui Eagles going through the days play undefeated and heading down the Lewis Pass with the trophy in hand. Aranui defeated Wellington side Toa in the grand final 20-6, after both teams had topped their pools at Trafalgar Park,Aranui, who were the clear favourites in the nine-a-side tournament, surpassed an impres-sive Stables Richmond Rabbits side in the semi finals 28-6. The tournament was the first time the Rabbits had played together and showed they will be one of the front runners when the TRL begins in a few week’s time, although they could be sweating on an injury picked up by the mercu-rial Eliot Smith.

Toa beat Wanderers Wolves 20-10 in the tourna-ment’s other semi final, which featured plenty of heated moments.Last year’s TRL champions Stoke Cobras default-ed in the fifth and sixth playoff, handing the vic-tory to Wairau Taniwha. Stoke pulled out of the clash due to an increasing number of injuries. The Victory Vikings beat the Tahunanui Tigers 24-16 to claim seventh place, in an entertaining match. The tournament was well organised with hun-dreds of spectactors coming through the gates during the day. There was Tasman Titans mer-chanside up for grabs for those that dressed up.It is hoped the Nelson Nines Rugby League Tournament will bring in the country’s top rugby league clubs in future years.

After an outstanding 2011 season culminating in winning the finals, the Waimea Old Boys women’s team is ready to face the new sea-son. The team already has 18 girls signed up but is still looking for some new faces to join the upcom-ing campaign.Stacey Davis, pregnant with her second child, is taking the season off playing rugby and will instead manage the team and be its official team sober driver. “I’m due on the finals day which could be interest-ing,” she says. A dedicated player, taking a year off is a tough call for Stacey who organised her wedding day to coincide with a team bye last

season. “We’re thrilled with the number of girls already signed up for the team and coming to pre-sea-son training but we’re always keen to recruit some more. No experi-ence is necessary and there’s still time to join us training on Thurs-day nights at 6pm and get fit and see if rugby is for you.”This year, Brendan O’Connor re-turns after a year off to coach the girls and will be assisted by Kane Hart. The girls’ season starts on Saturday April 28.For more information please con-tact Stacey on 0272267811 or email [email protected].

Nikita Lunjevich, Charna Thompson and Amanda Sim are encouraging more women to join the WOB team for the coming season.

The Waimea Amatuer Swim Club took a team of seven swimmers to the South Island Town and Country Championship in Cromwell and the majority of them collected personal best time. They competed as the Nelson Marlborough team and came home with a medal for second place overall on points. The team was Joe Banner, Zoe Hunt, Jasmine Hollis, Bradley Limmer, Emma Lovell, Gabrielle Lovell, and Olivia Meikle.

Records tumble at school champsThe region’s top young athletes ran, threw and jumped into the record books as seven records were broken at the Tasman Secondary School Athletics Championship on Saturday. It was the first time in the events history that it was staged on a weekend, with all of the sec-ondary schools from Golden Bay through to Marlborough taking part.Tapawera Area School’s rising talent Chris Brake got himself amongst the record books again, leaping 1.96m to equal his personal best in the Boys Under-19 high jump. Chris raised the bar to two metres, but was unable to clear the height in his three attempts. He also won

the triple jump with a distance of 13.07m.Waimea College’s Brendon Barnett was an-other top performer. Brendon won the Boys Under-19 100m in 11.35 seconds, the shot put with a throw of 13.89m, the jave-lin in 49.46m, the long jump in 6.62m and ran in the winning 4x100m relay team. Emily Jensen won the Under-19 girls triple jump, long jump and the 400m.The top two athletes from each grade gain automatic qualification into the South Island Secondary School Athletics Championship which will be held at Saxton Oval from March 31.

Stocks shock at Stock ShockIt was the out of town drivers that filled all of the podium places the Stanaway Roading Ltd Stock Shock, held at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway on Friday and Saturday. Twenty-nine standard stocks took to the track with Invercargill’s Campbell McManaway coming out trumps taking home the trophy and the $1000 cash prize that came with it, making his trip north definitely worth while. Sam Thompson and Ralph Gillespie, both of Blenheim, finished second and third. The best local driver was Trevor Lineham who fin-ished fourth place. There are now only two meetings left in the Nelson speedway season. Next on the calendar is The Stur-geons’ King of the Clay promotion with champion-ships for all classes to be run on March 24.

If you’re turning right from the bottom of a T-intersection with no signs or signals, you will need to give way to all vehicles at the top of the T.

So at all T-intersections and driveways, including public driveways such as at a supermarket or hospital, think ‘Top of the T goes before me’.

Top of the ‘T’ goes before me

To make our roads safer, two of the give way rules are changing. These changes will affect all drivers, riders, pedestrians and cyclists. Remember to share the road, obey all road signs and signals, and make sure you know the new rules.

If you’re turning right, give wayThis rule will apply at intersections where two vehicles are facing no signs or signals, or the same signs or signals. You will need to give way to left turning vehicles coming from the opposite direction if you are turning right.

Same signs or signalsNo signs or signals

The new rules come into effect at 5am on Sunday 25 March 2012
