Nelson airport sealing will be a ‘massive’ taskNelson Airport is gearing up for a $3 million runway upgrade while juggling flights on the country’s fourth busiest airport.Work, by contractor Fulton Hogan, is starting this week and Nelson Airport Ltd chief executive, Kaye McNabb, says there has been a huge amount of work that has already gone into the project. Planning re-quirements have been excruciatingly detailed to make sure the project runs smoothly and the airport con-tinues to be operational during the hours of scheduled operations.Work is expected to take 15 nights so that scheduled passenger services

are not disrupted. With around 2000 passengers a day coming or going from the airport, ensuring flight schedules are not affected is of para-mount importance to the airport company and the airlines, says Kaye. The project will see a team of up to 40 working throughout the night. As Friday night has flights com-ing in until 10.30pm, that has been designated as the rest night for the duration of the project. The area to be resurfaced is 61000m2 with around 8500 tonnes of asphalt required to complete the overlay. The runway was last resur-faced in 1995.

residential care and an increase in phar-maceuticals being prescribed. That pressure has put the DHB over budget. “We have also seen an increase in acute presentations in the Emergency De-partments and after hours clinics which has flowed onto how we resource elective or planned surgeries.”As a result Nelson MP Nick Smith says he written to ministers, including those holding health, education, social devel-opment, police and transport portfolios to make sure they are aware of the pres-sure the population increase is having on the region. “My aim is to ensure this latest data is taken into account when making resourcing decisions,” says Nick.

Residents of Waimea Village say they feel help-less and stressed as they watch their service costs rise from $80 at the start of 2011 to a proposed $284 this year.Waimea Village is based in Richmond and resi-dents – many of them elderly – own their own home, pay normal council rates and other bills. The service cost they pay to owners Michael and Carolyn Wright is for greenery collection, maintenance of common ground and a courtesy coach, used by just a few members of the village.Last year the Wrights attempted to raise the service costs by 120 per cent. The case went to arbitration where an increase of 56 per cent, or $45 dollars per month, was en-forced.This year the Wrights are back for another increase, this time for an-other 120 per cent. Local politicians have come on board though to back the residents. Nelson list MP Maryan Street has tabled a private mem-ber’s bill to get more protection for the residents under the 2003 Retirement Village Act, because the village is not a registered retirement village. And Tasman District councillors Kit Maling and Judene Edgar are vowing to help the residents fight the increase.Michael and Carolyn say they need the increase for manager’s wages, lawn mowing, administra-tion and a repair and maintenance fund. The repair and maintenance fund however is not protected, meaning residents could fill it for fu-ture maintenance projects only for the owners to sell the village and walk away with millions of dollars in the fund. The proposed 2012 budget, which WHK partner John Murray offered to

meet and “sell” to residents, states that $70,000 is needed for a manager’s salary, $20,000 for the owners’ living costs, $9000 for the lease of the owners’ cars, $60,000 for administration costs and $340,000 for repairs and maintenance this year at the village. That repair and maintenance figure used to be $10,000 a year and as far as Nelson Weekly has been able to find out, there has been little or no money spent on any village maintenance in the past five years, apart from a new ride-on for Michael, who pays himself to

mow the lawns.Kit says he has received letters from residents upset, angry and scared about the treatment at the hands of Michael and Carolyn. “I talk to these people and what he is doing is not on. These elderly peo-ple should not have to put up with this bully. He has gone too far.”Michael and Carolyn would not

answer questions put to them by Nelson Weekly, or return phone calls but it appears they are at-tempting to take the case straight to arbitration, which the residents are fighting, as last year’s case cost $19,000, which the Wrights are cur-rently trying to pass onto residents. The Wrights sent a letter to residents last week stating: “any negotiations with the [Waimea Vil-lage] Residents Committee have been compro-mised and that in the best interests of everyone concerned the 2012 levy proposal goes straight to an independent arbitrator”.This was after multiple copies of the proposed lease increase, handed out to residents’ commit-tee members on the condition they kept it secret, were stuffed in the front door of the Waimea Weekly office and subsequently published.

One of Nelson’s iconic local brews will soon be available in the capital as the Sprig & Fern gets set to open a tavern in central Wellington. There could even be a couple of politicians walk the few hundred metres from parlia-ment for a cold one, says Sprig & Fern co-owner Dave Barrett. As the most awarded brewery at the 2011 BrewNZ International Beer Awards, Dave says the Sprig & Fern beers will be a per-fect fit for a city that calls itself the craft beer capital of New Zealand. “They call themselves the craft beer capital

and I think Nelson-Tasman is the craft brew capital of New Zealand so it was a natural progression to go to Wellington,” says Dave.Co-owner Tracey Banner says the owner-operators of Wellington’s Sprig & Fern know what the culture of the taverns is like and they em-brace the qualities that Nelson’s taverns are

known for - a family friendly place where patrons can go at the end of the day to catch up and re-ally talk away from the distractions of pool tables and pok-ies, great service “and obviously great beer.”The Tavern is due

to open in Wellington by the end of the month and Tracey says further expansion

is not out of the question. “We get asked three or four times a month by people wanting to start new Sprig & Fern bars but it’s a matter of finding the right people in the right place.”Sprig & Fern now has five taverns in the top of the south with another few bars that pour their beers on tap. Dave says it’s excit-ing to see the brand grow. “It was always in the plan but it’s great to see it happen and great to see the brand move out of Nelson. We would like to see a Sprig & Fern in eve-ry major city in New Zealand and eventu-ally to take it overseas.”

Nelson neighbourhoods are being encouraged to get behind Neighbours Day by hosting street events and getting to better know their neigh-bours.Neighbourhood Support Nelson is supporting the national day which aims to encourage Kiwis to go one step further in getting to know their neighbours on a special day each year. Neighbours Day is over the weekend of March 24-25 but Neighbourhood Support would like people to let them know how they are celebrat-ing the day, whether it’s with a street party, or a cup of tea amongst neighbours. All entries will go into a draw to win great priz-es, including meat packs, cake packs or a skip hire for a street clean up.Entries close February 24 and for an application form email [email protected] Support coordinator Kim MacDonald says the day is a great opportunity to get to know your neighbour a bit better than they do now.“Whether it’s a first wave or smile, a chat over the fence, inviting someone in for a cuppa or holding a street barbeque, every connection makes our neighbourhoods more friendly, fun and safe. Neighbours Day Aotearoa is also about celebrating the neighbourhoods we have. “It’s not about big events, but local activity in every street and neighbourhood.”To find out more about Neighbours Day visit its website at www.neighboursday.org.nz.

After the smoke cleared Allan was still buzzing and mum was still sure she had made the right decision. “That was good fun, I was a bit nervous but as soon as we start-ed it was great,” says Allan. There were all levels of competitors in the burnout competition from pros to first-timers. Chayla Cooper driving a purple Nissan 200SX, made her debut in front of the throngs of cheer-ing onlookers and gave it everything. “That was my first skid; I’m still shaking so I guess that’s a good thing. It’s was heaps of fun and I’d defi-nitely do it again,” says Chayla.Nick Appleman's 54 Behemoth was crowned Top Judged overall car.

Finalists picked for love storiesNine local couples have made the final dash towards the ultimate love story – and a $1600 diamond. The Jens Hansen Love Stories com-petition is being run on conjunction with the Nelson Wedding Show and called for the best love stories to be entered. Each of the nine finalists, released exclusively to Nelson Weekly to co-incide with Valentine’s Day, have won a $600 diamond voucher from Jens Hansen. The overall winner, chosen by the

public, will win an additional $1000 voucher.Over the next nine weeks Nelson Weekly will profile each of the final-ists.Judges Halfdan Hansen from Jens Hansen, Jenny Walton from the Nelson Wedding Show and Gayle Dickson, Editor of My Wedding Magazine, had to choose nine final-ists from almost 40 entries.“It was fantastic to read so many wonderful love stories – some were quite funny and others very roman-tic, so it was a challenge to decide

the nine best love stories,” says Halfdan. Jenny says the competition has been great fun so far and has add-ed something special to this year’s Wedding Show.“Now it is up to the public to vote for the ultimate Nelson love story at the show on May 6. Those who vote on the day could also win them-selves Jens Hansen jewellery, so it is worth coming to vote.”Gayle Dickson of My Wedding magazine says she was thrilled at

the variety of stories that came through in the entries. “Some brought tears to our eyes while others had us chuckling away merrily,” she says. “In reality, they were all fabulous, for very different reasons and, in some respects, I’m glad I can leave the final decision up to

the public as it would be a hard call to make.”The nine finalists and winners of a $600 Jens Hansen diamond vouch-er are: WIlliam Jack and Kath-leen Emerson; Mike Battersby and Justine Stebbings; Timothy Kolk and Nicola Kolk; Jim and Raewyn Wiseman; Lisa Holden and Shan-non Wild; Ingrid Hutzler and Peter Pay; Chris and Barbelle Boaz; Evan Shallcrass and Ana-Marie Tahu; Robert and Julie Tee.The public can read their stories at www.nelsonweddingshow.co.nz.

Three years ago David Currie was a dead man, literally. Today he is revelling in com-pleting the Buller half mara-thon, a goal he gave himself to keep fit and to continue to get better after a massive stroke killed him, before a miraculous recovery soon after.David’s remarkable story of waking up days after he was taken off life support featured in Nelson Weekly last May and he has been training since then to walk the Buller half marathon. He has been walking from his Stoke home to Nelson and Richmond and had already complet-ed three half marathons, or 21.09 kilometres, before Saturday’s effort. His stroke still makes it dif-ficult for him to walk easily but with a walking stick he is able to get through the kilometres.A support crew including his brother Mark and daughter Nicole went along to help him get over the line in a time of 4 hours 10 minutes, 10 minutes quicker than his previous fastest. He says he is stoked to have finished the

challenge. “It feels good, I bloody hate walking so I’d like to give it up now, but I don’t think my wife will let me. I’m not much of a swimmer, I’d bloody sink, so this is about all I’ve got to stop from get-ting fat,” he joked.David was also raising money for the Heart Foundation and as of yesterday

had so far raised a total of $1700 from donations. Local businessmen Hamish Fletcher, Mark Currie and Tony Jem-mett, from David’s work Opus, also contributed towards shoes, equipment and clothing for David’s walk. To make a donation to David’s fundraiser visit www.heartracer.co.nz/davidcurrie.

Little Day Out not so littleNow that the Big Day Out has confirmed it won’t be back to New Zealand, perhaps the Victory Little Day Out should nab its name because their current title seems a bit redundant. Hundreds of families filled Victory Square to enjoy the music and attractions in the summer sun. Over the past eight years Nelson man Chris Scott has ridden the Coast to Post charity bike ride, he has seen snow, wind, rain, sun and extreme heat. This year he, along with wife Sheila, will witness another event to re-member – the event’s 25th anniver-sary.The Coast to Post ride was found-ed by NZ Post workers as a “fun” ride, it went from Greymouth to the Christchurch Post Office and almost immediately took on the Pink Panther as its mascot. As the “posties” were already doing the ride someone suggested they raise some money for charity, which be-gan a quarter century relationship with Child Cancer House in Cashel St. The house is used as a home away from home for children and youngsters with cancer.Over the years the cyclists have

raised $222,000 for the charity and this year – the year it’s needed most after the earthquakes damaged the house – are hoping to make it an even $250,000.Chris and Sheila are the only two Nelson riders taking part, joining another 40 cyclists in the three day ride. They say they are looking for-ward to it, despite the gut-busting climbs. “Some of those hills are twice as bad as the Takaka Hill. A lot end up walking their bikes up, so it’s definitely not the easiest of rides,” says Sheila. This year Chris says he is hoping Nelson people will sponsor him and his wife to help rebuild the Child Cancer House. To make a donation either call Chris on 547 9210 or drop some money into do-nation boxes at Nelson Weekly on Selwyn Pl or the Waimea Weekly on Salisbury Rd in Richmond.

Top musicans camp in NelsonFormer Nayland College student Alexa Thomson playing the violin at the Nelson School of Music last week. Photo: Andrew Board.

The country’s best sounding summer school fin-ished over the weekend with two performances that thrilled audiences. The Adam Summer School is an annual event held at the Nelson School of Music each Feb-ruary, with generous support from Denis and Verna Adam of the Adam Foundation. The tutors are the members of the internation-ally acclaimed New Zealand String Quartet, all of whom are dedicated teachers as well as per-formers. Accomplished New Zealand pianist Diedre Irons also filled the role of piano tutor.

This year 25 highly-skilled young musicians from around New Zealand attended the Sum-mer School. The students formed seven cham-ber ensembles, each group working in depth on a work that they presented in the final public concerts on Saturday. Former Nayland College student Alexa Thom-son, was the only Nelsonian involved in the camp. She says it was great to work with other passionate musicans.“You learn a lot in a short space of time. It’s re-ally intense but also really rewarding.”

Ride for Hope draws cash for Richmond Mall charityClose to $10,000 was raised for the Richmond Mall Foundation on the back of another successful Ride for Hope. The annual event, which sees motorcyclists from around the region head out to Hope via Motueka, attracted around 200 motorbikes and their riders despite some murky weather.Richmond Mall manager David Hill says the rid-ers alone raised $2000, which was then matched by the Richmond Mall owners. “It was outstanding. It really was,” he says. “Weath-er-wise and the number of riders that turned up, we were exceptionally thrilled with it.”There were also plenty of donations from sponsors which raised the funds even higher. David says the funds are “the backbone” of the foundation which gives to individuals as well as local groups, includ-

ing the Rescue Helicopter Trust and the Nelson Hospice. The Ride for Hope is one of a number of fundrais-ers run by the Richmond Mall. Richmond Mall Foundation is also the charity of choice for the Richmond Rodeo.David spoke to “just about everyone” that went on the ride and says the feedback was all hugely positive as participants enjoyed a barbecue cooked by the Waimea College first XV. “It was a relaxing ride; the whole day is about relaxing and camara-derie.”There were plenty of awesome prizes on offer, es-timated to tally $5000, including motorcycle regis-trations, All Blacks jerseys, radio controlled heli-copters, belts, buckles, badges and even Welsh and Australian rugby jerseys.

Stall holders sought for summer fare

Throwing money at a donation tin while it’s moving at running pace isn’t the easiest thing to do. Just ask St John’s Sarah McCabe who had to try and catch the donations.Sarah says she was impressed with the speed teams were able to pull a vintage 1940 Interna-tional ambulance from the Richmond Mall to the Nelson Car Show on Saturday and that in keeping up with it she ran more than she had in some time. “It was tough work; they were really going at a good speed.”The ambulance pull was designed to raise awareness and collect money for a new events

ambulance that St John is currently fundrais-ing for. They have raised $56,000 to date and need to raise a further $69,000 to meet their target. Teams of eight from ASB Bank, Nelson College 1st XV and Marist Rugby Club pulled the ambulance, which took around 2 hours, with plenty of stops. “I’d like to say thanks to all the teams and eve-ryone who donated from passing cars, it was a great day and the vintage ambulance pull was a first for Nelson.”To donate visit www.stjohn.org.nz/nelsonpuz-zle.

Food vendors can now register to be part of the annual Sprig & Fern Summer Fare, but if previous years are anything to go by, sites could be snapped up very quickly.More than 3000 people visited the Summer Fare last year and organisers say it is the “last hooray” for Nelson and Tasman residents before winter sets in and daylight saving finishes. The family-friendly event is now iconic in Richmond and attracts plenty of people from Nelson city as well.Richmond Unlimited marketing and events co-ordinator Kim Quint is en-couraging food vendors from all over Tasman and Nelson to be part of the biggest street party in the region. The event will be held at Sundial Square on Friday 23 March from 5:30pm to 10pm.You can register your interest at www.richmondunlimited.co.nz. Stall sites cost $80 and are 4 metres by 3 metres deep. Organisers will not allow food stalls that have not been registered or li-censed with the Tasman District Council, or alternatively, the New Zealand Food Safety Authority. This year’s theme will be medieval and there will be music and enter-tainment for all ages. For further enquiries please contact Kim on 544 4898.

Scientist Mike Mandeno shows a specimen of a geoduck (‘gooey-duck’) clam that Cawthron are now breeding at the Cawthron Open Day.

Cawthron tour fully bookedThe Cawthron Institute says it was overwhelmed by the response to their Open Day at the Glenhaven Aquaculture Research Centre on Sunday. More than 500 visitors of all ages and from all parts of the country and abroad showed up. At fifteen-minute intervals, Cawthron scien-tists were kept busy escorting some fifty-plus groups around the site, where they explained the workings of the research work being done in the centre’s various departments. Visitors were also able to witness many real research projects in pro-gress.And the response was very positive, particularly among the young, some of whom declaring that they “were

now hooked on science”. Locals said how proud they were that their city had such a prestigious institu-tion in their midst. And others were so impressed by Cawthron’s work, that they signed up to be Friends of Cawthron.Jo Thompson, Cawthron’s com-munity educator, says her phone has been running red-hot since the Open Day was advertised in Nelson Weekly last week. “It’s brilliant that people are so interested in what Cawthron do to contribute to aq-uaculture and the region. With so many locals wanting to take a look at the science behind the doors, we will have to consider offering an-other opportunity in the future for those who have missed out”

Horncastle’s own children attend, and look forward to other opportunities to be involved with the Nelson community.

Happy Hour is held daily from 5pm until 7pm, with great drinks specials such as two margaritas for $10. Every Thursday is Ladies Night, with a medium Dixie Chicken and glass of house wine for only $25. Other promotions are running all the time. Check the Nelson Lone Star Facebook page for current promotions and your chance to win Lone Star vouchers. For couples celebrating Valentine’s day, ladies can enjoy a complimentary glass of Brancott Estate Reserve Brut Cuvee, so come in to have a romantic dinner with your other half tonight. The restaurant is always busy but never crowded. The seating is well spaced out and there are several different sections both indoor and outdoor. Even in winter the outdoor seating is comfortable; renovations undertaken since Ryan and Penny took over ownership transformed the formerly bland old

courtyard into a welcoming area with heating and a television. If you are having a birthday dinner or other celebration, you can book out an area of the restaurant to hold your exclusive event. Your guests can order off the menu or you can decide on a set menu. With a seated capacity of 120, come in to discuss your event; whether it be a small catch up dinner or a family reunion, whatever the scale Lone Star will be more than happy to accommodate. If you want to have Lone Star’s quality food but are just after a quiet night in, you can take advantage of their takeaway option. Their menu has something for everyone, with mouth-watering meals for vegetarians and seafood lovers, all the way through to whopping 350 gram steaks for the carnivores.

Ryan and Penny are enjoying working in Lone Star Nelson and enjoy the opportunity to be a part of their local community. Ryan is Nelson born and bred, and Penny hails from the scenic Takaka hills. After spending a decade in Australia, the couple returned to Nelson, as they felt it was the best place to raise their three children. Their staff base of around 20 includes many old faces that they kept on after taking over ownership, as well as several additions who have become assets to an already great team.Come along for the delicious food, welcoming atmosphere, and to meet the new owners and friendly staff at Lone Star. Whether you’re coming with family or friends, you’re sure to have a great meal and an enjoyable night.

There’s something for everyone at the Lone Star, whether you’re after a few drinks at the bar or a memorable meal with friends and family. The vast menu provides plenty of choice and the generous portions and quality food will leave you completely satisfied. Ryan and Penny Horncastle took over

ownership of the Hardy St Lone Star nine months ago, and bring a family emphasis to the centrally located restaurant. Parents with young children might often find themselves reluctant to go out to dinner, as it can be difficult to keep kids from becoming restless. This isn’t a problem at the Lone Star; the focus is on the young ones, with colouring pages and other activities provided to keep them occupied as you wait for your meals. Lone Star also has an extensive kids menu that is sure to delight even the fussiest of children, and keep them on their best behaviour right through to dessert, which is free with any kid’s meal. Ryan and Penny have three children of their own, so they understand that when the kids are happy, the parents are happy. At the Lone Star you can enjoy a stress free night out with your family.Lone Star is proud to have recently started sponsoring Auckland Point School’s Gold Citizen Award. Last week’s winner, fifth grader Eden Rutherford, was the first to receive a voucher, t-shirt and certificate

from Lone Star to honour her exceptional contribution to the school community. Other Auckland Point students can strive to receive the same prize when they are named the Gold Citizen, which is awarded to the most deserving student each week. The Wairoa Gorge hosted an alien invasion for the tenth year running over the weekend, making Al-ien Nation the longest run-ning active outdoor dance party in the country.Close to 350 people of the alternative breed landed up the right branch of the valley for the tenth Alien Nation dance party. Ac-cording to Moxely, a local DJ and crew member the name Alien Nation refers to anyone who has felt al-ienated from the norms of society, and the festival is a place where those people can come once a year and be part of a community. “If you feel like an alien, we welcome you,” she says.Unlike a number of other festivals with big name acts, this event is proud of underground music. Psy-chedelic trance, progres-sive, minimal and Techno are just some of the genres of dance music that featured over the four day event. The organisers describe Alien Nation as “a unique festival that opens new dimensions of the mind. Allowing you to see, hear, feel - experi-ence the primal music of New Zealand talent in a beautiful native environment along with care-fully selected Underground Producers and DJs from around the world”.Event organised Warrick Harrington says the festival is a place where people can relax and lis-ten to some great music or dance all night, but

one of the most important components is creat-ing a safe environment to enjoy it in.The top of the south is a “perfect” place for out-door music events, he says. “The location is a perfect fit for Alien. Beautiful weather and fan-tastic people is the reason why we’ve been com-ing back here for a decade,” says Warrick. Wairoa Gorge resident Peter Russ says he doesn’t mind having the aliens descend on the valley. “They don’t cause any trouble so I’m happy for them to get on with what they want to do. My daughter’s fruit stall might even get a few extra sales,” he says.

Tug of Peace organiser Phil Wright is encourag-ing Waimea residents to rope in their friends, colleagues and team mates for the annual Nelson Hospice fundraiser. The Tug of Peace will be held in Richmond for the first time in its 13 year history, following many years on Trafalgar St, Nelson. The last Tug of Peace was held during the Rugby World Cup, which was part of the reason to situ-ate within the Tasman region.Sundial Square will be the backdrop with teams of eight competing to see who is Nelson’s strong-est. Past winners have included the Tasman Ma-

kos, fire fighters, police and forestry workers, but Phil says the competition is wide open this year.He is encouraging friends, family and sports teams to enter. “We’ve got a trophy. It’s a hand carved trophy which will be on display and the winning team will get their names engraved on it,” he says. The event is free to enter but there will be raffles to help fundraise for the hospice. To enter, fill out a registration form from Farm-ers, Richmond Mall or download from the event’s website www.nelsonhospice.org.nz. It be-gins at 12:30pm this Saturday.

The restaurant has affiliations with other schools in the district, including Nelson Central School and Enner Glynn, which the

A home is the biggest investment you’ll ever make, so it’s understandable to want the most for your money. Bruce Design and Build understand this, and are able to provide their clients with the quality you can expect of a building company for a lower price tag. Russell Bruce began the venture 18 months ago, as the logical next move in an already successful building career. He began as the apprentice and first builder for another reputable building com-pany in Nelson a decade ago. His building skill and flair for the industry meant that soon he was be-ing individually requested by clients to build their homes. Over the last 10 years Russell and his team have worked on over 150 houses within the Nelson region, with as many satisfied homeowners. In 2011 the team from Bruce Design and Build worked on four homes that went on to win their owners’ House of the Year awards from Master

Builders. One was a home that they had construct-ed under the new title of Bruce Design and Build, which won the Silver Award. Over his time as a builder in Nelson, Russell built up a team of 10 builders, many of whom he trained as apprentices and kept on because of their skill and work ethic. When he branched out into own-ing his own company, he brought his team with him. They work for Bruce Design and Build di-rectly, not through contractors. This, along with their respect for Russell, means that they always work to the highest standard to uphold the com-pany’s reputation. In 2011 Isaac Alder, one of Russell’s apprentices, was awarded Local Apprentice of the Year. He then went on to win New Zealand’s apprentice of the Year. He is still working with Russell for Bruce Design and Build, and makes up just part of the impressive building team.

Bruce Design and Build are fortunate to have Rus-sell’s own home as a means to show clients what a completed home looks like. The house demonstrates the workmanship and gives an example of products and fixtures. They have also built five of the neigh-bouring houses, along the Tussock Place cul-de-sac in Stoke. This gives them what is almost a show home village, but with more variety; they have an example of a two story house, houses in different price ranges, even one that is on a steep site that re-quired significant earth works before construction could start. The houses are all occupied, however the owners have all said they’re happy to show perspec-tive clients through to give them an idea of what an actual Bruce Design and Build home looks like. This is a comment on the positive ongoing relationship Russell fosters with all his clients. Bruce Design and Build have many long term pro-fessional relationships with some of the best con-tracting companies in the district, who they take on to complete the specialised work in houses they build. The contractors provide the highest standard of workmanship for the best price. If, however, you have a preferred company of your own, or would like to source the work to a friend or relative in the trade, Bruce Design and Build is able to accommodate. As they have no obligation to any company through a franchise, they can be very flexible to your de-sires to personalise your home. Working for his own company rather than for a

franchise also means that Russell has no overheads. Your building costs won’t include overheads such as franchising rights, meaning they can keep your costs down while you still get the same, or better, quality. Your home will be completed on a fixed cost con-tract, meaning that there are no hidden costs or ad-ditional fees. Whether you’re after a house and land package, have already got the land and are hoping to build, or even rebuild on your own section, Bruce Design and Build can take care of it. They have an in-house designer with an architectural background who you speak with initially to figure out your house plans. Whether you’ve got something in mind or need a professional to determine the best way to build on your particular section, the designer can work with you to get a plan that you’ll love to live in. Russell’s background in the housing industry and having worked as a builder himself means that work-ing on a timeline and to a deadline is second nature. He understands that providing the highest quality on the timeline discussed is paramount, and will work to get the job completed in the best possible time frame in relation to the scale of the build. As your biggest investment, you want to achieve your dream home, and with Bruce Design and Build, you can.

Bruce Design & Build work closely with reputable local contractors and companies creating styish homes that their customers love.

Russell Bruce (front row center) and his team of builders (back) Will Conlon, Nathan Gibson, Isaac Alder, James Pomeroy, Jacob Cox, Bevan Schwass, (front) Ben Alder, Aaron Mitchell, Tom Bruce and Steve Wilson.

As well as trying to achieve the highest standard of liv-ing for you and your family, Russell is also environ-mentally aware and conscious to build energy efficient homes. Whether it’s prioritising under floor insulation to ensure effective heating and lower energy bills, or solar heated water systems and rainwater collection systems to make your home more efficient, he finds solutions that not only save the environment, they’ll save you money in the long term and make your home more comfortable. Russell has experience in all aspects of the building process, and prides himself on being able to provide what a housing company can at a lower cost. Your home will have a 10 year guarantee with Master Build-ers, so you can build stress-free. They will take care of the entire process, including design, council approval and construction, so that all you have to do is look for-ward to enjoying your newly built home. Bruce Design and Build have based their business from Russell’s home in Tussock Place, and have re-cently expanded to have offices at 8b Kotua Place in Wakatu. This is due mostly to their involvement with the National product called Flashman, which is de-

signed to stop significant leaks that have become a common problem around aluminium windows. The Wakatu offices have room for a workshop in which to manufacture the Flashman window system. Since aluminium windows were first introduced 40 years ago, there has never been an adequate flashing system. This combined with NZ’s unique climate; win-dow and door cladding junctions have been responsi-ble for 50% of the Leaky Homes academic. Heavy reli-ance on silicon sealant as a flashing has been, and still is, the cause of many leaky buildings. The Flashman flashing system is the solution – it has been invented by New Zealanders to protect Home Owners, Design-ers & Builders by eliminating leaks at the junction between the cladding and aluminium joinery. Russell says that after explaining its benefits to clients, they al-ways want to use the Flashman system on their new home. If you’re looking to build your dream home, visit the experienced and professional team at Bruce Design and Build. Visit the website at www.brucebuilders.co.nz or contact Russell to discuss your plans, and he and his team will take care of you.

TUESDAY 14 February 2012

Hello again – February is now upon us and thank good-ness we have had a very quiet start to it. Nothing more to report in the “silly things” area and having just come back from another Nana break in Christchurch I am pleased to report all is well there too! The photo this week will be easily recognised as the beau-tiful flowers of the Eucalyptus ficifolia. I saw this tree while walking down the Railway Reserve this morning and asked Johnno to take a shot as the colour is amazing. It always means “summer is here” to me when these lovely eucalypts start to flower. The bees love these blossoms also as the tree was literally humming as I walked past.We spent a lovely weekend pottering in the garden, bring-ing in our wood for winter and generally tidying up. The vege garden had a real makeover and replant and there was great excitement as the first of “Beryls” tomatoes was sliced on toast for breakfast.I should tell you a little about Beryl. She was a remarkable lady who became a good friend and I met her while work-ing as a volunteer for the Foundation for the Blind several years ago. She was 93, blind and nearly totally deaf, still living on her own (with good family support), and was still a very keen gardener. She grew a lot of her own veges and had saved seed for many years from dwarf beans – they were very tasty – and from tomatoes that she and her husband were given by the Italian growers in the Wood area of Nelson about 40 years ago. I never could work out just how she knew when to pick things just at their prime. I was not allowed to do much to assist her but one season did help by taking and drying the seeds from a ripe to-mato she had picked. This was the start of my tomato crop. They are a large, meaty, low acid Italian variety and are re-ally the tastiest and sweetest tomatoes to eat. Every year I dry seeds on paper towels and produce about 24 seedlings. They are strong growers and produce a good number of

fruit. Sadly Beryl passed away two years ago but her legacy of beans and tomatoes lives on. Many of the plants have been given to friends and neighbours and are now spread throughout Nelson. She taught me a lot and very rarely let her lack of sight and hearing stop her doing things she loved – we had long and very loud conversations over many cups of tea about all sorts of things from gardens to travel, family and food (she loved to cook). You will doubtless read more about Beryl in other edi-tions.

• Keep picking berry fruit, peaches (we have eaten all our fruit from the dwarf peach –de-licious!) plums etc as soon as they ripen to stop the birds get-ting them.• Rake up fallen fruit and leaves to deter wasps from hanging around.• Thin out fruit on apples, pears and citrus so that re-maining fruits are spaced about 10-15 cms apart. This en-courages more even-sized fruit and also helps young trees establish more readily.• Prune out the old canes from raspberries, boysenberries etc when they have finished fruiting and train up strong new canes to take their place.• Roses – continue deadheading and to help with the last flush of flowers, trim all new growth back by about a third. Keep feeding them and ensure they get good water regu-larly. Also keep a good eye out for pests on new growth.

• Keep picking zucchini to encourage them to produce and take out the lower leaves from tomatoes to allow for more even ripening.• Do not put tomatoes in the fridge as they will lose flavour. Pick them when just turning and put them in a bowl in-side to ripen at room temperature.

gardens in the Nelson area so I have been advised to tell you not to have it on view from the street as you may well lose it.It has strongly hallucinogenic properties and I am told that after much boiling down and straining of the juice the end re-sult is supposed to give quite a feeling of euphoria. However – it is very unpleas-ant, causes vomiting and other side effects which can be quite dangerous so this use is to be avoided at all cost! One good thing about this cac-

tus is the beautiful flowers. They are short-lived as this helps the plant retain moisture. They are best grown in the ground as they lose energy when in a pot and do not do so well. They are easy to grow and if you cut them across they will branch out. They also are spineless which is a real bo-nus for a cactus. They will handle frost very well and really are worth growing as the flowers are quite stunning - just keep them around the back of the property!! I do hope this added information is all you need Linda.

Q: From Judy in Stoke – She wanted to know why her cau-liflowers were turning pink. “The seed was “Phenomenal Early” and it was from Watkins.A: I phoned Yates, (who distribute Watkins) and spoke with a delightful lady called Denise who told me the fol-lowing: "They do not believe it is a seed problem. Good news is it is not a fungal disease or a pest.Genetic purpling can occur when plants are exposed to too much sunlight – they can either turn yellow or pinkish purple around the edges at first."They suggest keeping the head of the cauli covered with the leaves as much as possible and it should help the prob-lem. If the leaves are turning purple as well they suggest you check the level of magnesium in your soil as too little or too much could be adding to the problem.Eat and enjoy your pretty Cauli – hope that helps!

Until next time – happy gardening,

Got a Sport Story?

COOLEY DOES IT: ACOB batsman Jake Cooley runs through the crease just before Stoke/Nayland’s wicket keeper Mark Douglas could get the bails off during the Twenty20 final on Sunday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

ACOB made it two from two on the weekend, claiming both first and second division Twenty20 titles at Saxton Oval on Sunday.Athletic College Old Boys in their first year back on the Nelson cricket scene, formerly AOB, stood firm with a solid 126/8 at the end of their 20 overs. Eng-lishman Jake Milton impressed yet again with 28 from the bat while Luke Toynbee also chipped in a real team effort. But that total was enough as they bowled Car Company Stoke/Nayland all out for 105 in the final over. Again it was a team effort with the ball, although having two spin bowlers seemed to play its part.ACOB coach Garry MacDonald says the club is absolutely buzzing following the double over the weekend, stating that they didn’t think they would be “any-where near that” in their first year. “Well yes, we were obviously pretty happy

about that. We thought it would take two or three years before we won something, so we’re a little bit ahead of schedule.”The side has been built around Jake’s im-pressive and consistent batting displays. “He’s a marvellous bloke and a very good cricketer. Hell he’s been a godsend.”He was pleased with performance of his batsmen on a difficult wicket. “It was pretty dry. Put it this way, if we had got more than 135 we would have been more than happy.”Despite winning both grades, Garry says the club needs to mould a few younger faces, before being completely happy with the depth in the club. Old cam-paigners Gary Walton and Paul Brydon played a considerable part in the season. ACOB will now continue their one-day campaign which got off to the perfect start on Saturday, smashing Hot Mama’s Motueka.

ACOB grab trophy in first year back

Nelson’s Nick Marquet, left, has the outside on South Island Midget Champs rival Dave Kerr at the Nelson Speedway on Saturday night. Photo: Blair Hall/Photoaction.

Nelson’s top midget drivers Nick Marquet and Nevil Basalaj couldn’t break Dave Kerr’s winning streak as the Christchurch driver edged to his fifth consecutive South Island Midget Championship at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway on Saturday night. With two wins from three races Dave tallied up 28 points to edge out Nick who was two points behind with Nevil third, despite not finishing the third heat. Nick was left to rue points he failed to pick up in ear-lier races. In the first heat he was in second place with just one lap remaining, before being passed by Dunedin driv-er Gavin Wilkie in the final stages, which would have made things even more interesting heading into the final race.Nevil claimed race two with Nick again featuring in the second positive, one spot ahead of Dave.Despite being stuck at the back of the grid, Nick forced his way to the front during the final race only to be surpassed by the night’s eventual winner, keep-ing the title back in Christchurch.

The third annual NZ Ihatove Adventure Trial is set to take place in 88 Valley, near Wakefield, this Sunday. The event attracts riders from all over New Zea-land and Japan and tests riders’ skill, negotiating obstacles including rocks, sheer walls and tyres. The popular Goldpine Team Xtreme riders from NonStop Adventure will also be on hand to en-tertain spectators and play hosts to the event. The rider-friendly event is all about fun and par-ticipation, a recipe that has been working very successfully for over 34 years in Japan, the home of the Ihatove event, says organiser Stephen Oli-

ver. “The founder of the Japanese Ihatove event, Yasuo Manzawa is keen to see this type of event grow in New Zealand as it has become very popular in Japan. This event caters for all levels of rider which helps to give the weekend a fun atmosphere which is very well received.”Top World Podium rider, and multi Japanese Champion, Takumi Narita, visited NonStop Adventure as a guest of in the inaugural 2010 NZ Ihatove event held at Wakefield, with Tri-als legend Mick Andrew in 2011. This year Hiro Kimura, best friend of Mick and long-time de-velopment rider for Yamaha, is expected to line

up and show his skills. He will join Japanese rider Ishi Yama at the event.Thursday will be a busy day for the Japanese guests as they no sooner arrive at Nelson airport before they are whisked away to be welcomed by NonStop’s stra-tegic partners, the Tasman Dis-trict Council’s mayor Richard Kempthorne and then Robert and Jane Eggers and their team at Goldpine.Sunday’s event is being held at Punawai Farm, 88 Valley Rd, Wakefield with signposts show-ing the way.For more information about the NZ Ihatove Adventure Trial and Team Xtreme visit www.nonstopadventure.co.nz/newzealandihatovetrials.php or phone Stephen at 545 1053.

The Nelson 18u Blair Cup representative team was in top form to beat Marlborough 14-2 on Sunday to retain the trophy. The team dominated from the beginning winning three out of the four doubles matches. Ashleigh Calder and Amanda Coeland won 6-2, 6-1, and the second girls doubles Laura Roberts and Hannah Waine won 6-0, 6-1. The top boy’s combination of Henry Neas and Ben Petley won their match 6-0, 6-4, and the second doubles com-bination of Aiden MacKenzie and George Harris were beaten by Lee Harbourne and Josh Watson 2-6, 1-6.The girls dominated in the singles winning all four matches in very convincing straight set victories. Henry continuing his recent form and selection into the Can-terbury team had a good win against Andrew 7-5, 6-3. Ben had a tough three set encounter winning the first set 6-4, and dropping the second in a tie-breaker. Ben then took the third set and the match 6-2. Lee, of Marlbor-ough, was too strong for Aiden and George at number four won his game 6-4, 6-2.Going into the mixed doubles Nelson had the fixture wrapped up but pulled out four strong mixed doubles wins, all being straight set victories. The Nelson winning team was: Ashleigh Calder, Aman-da Coeland, Laura Roberts, Hannah Waine, Henry Neas, Ben Petley, Aiden MacKenzie, George Harris. That was the final junior representative fixture for sum-mer, however Nelsons top juniors are in full swing of training for the Nelson Junior Open coming up at the end of March.

skipper Reuben Wiki will be the star at-traction for the Rugby League Commu-nity Roots Carnival at Auckland Point School this Sunday.Reuben, along with Tasman Rugby League, are hosting the day, starting with a free breakfast and followed by coach-ing, skills and drills, family activities and games and the opportunity to have your photo taken with the Rugby League World Cup, held by the Kiwis. The day is also aimed at encouraging kids to give league a go as TRL and New Zealand Rugby League continue to grow the sport in Nelson.TRL chairman Paul Lafotanoa says the day was fantastic last year and he hopes families are keen to come down and have a fun day out. "It's a really enjoyable day and the kids just love it. Reuben is fantastic with them and last year they all went away with a big smile on their face. They not only learn the fundamentals of League, there are a heap of other activi-ties for the whole family.”TRL is running the Primary Schools Competition for the Simon Mannering Cup again this year, kicking off in a cou-ple of months. The carnival kicks off at 11am this Sun-day, February 19. IN BRIEFmUlTiSporT: Nelson couple Richard and Elina Ussher made history at the Speight’s Coast to Coast over the weekend – becoming the first couple to win the title in the same year. The win is a fantastic effort by the Ussh-ers in one of the country’s toughest and most iconic multisport events.

crickET: Nelson’s Marty Kain probably dreamt of playing the starring role in helping win a national cricket championship. But that dream probably didn’t feature a bat.Marty, batting at number 10, hit the winning runs for Central Districts to beat Auckland in the one day cricket final on Sunday. His part-nership of 60 off 27 balls with fellow bowler Michael Mason saw the Stags home with only four balls left.

rUnning: With Buller over, athletes around the region will be targeting the Kaiteriteri Gold Half Marathon or 10km on Saturday March 17 as their next running or walking challenge. With over 125 already on the gold-en beach start line, Nelson Events are reward-ing one of these, or anyone else registered by February 17 with an enticing Early Bird Spot Prize. The Nelson BMX club has a “promising” fu-ture as a team of five returned from the Wel-lington BMX Championships in Levin with a first overall and a number of podium finishes amongst them. The Nelson representatives raced in age grades from seven to 30 plus.Racing in the 11 year old boys grade, local lad Logan Clarke exceeded his national NZ4 ranking to win all four heats and the final to take out first overall. The feat was all the more impressive as Logan was racing against the number one ranked rider for their age group as well as competitors from all over New Zea-land.

Out of the 180 competitors racing, Nelson’s team was strongly represented in the winner’s circle with Bradey Taylor-Jones getting second overall in the 16 years age grade while Tasman Wakelin also got on the podium with a third overall. Hamish Clarke, the club president, says they did fantastically well. “From the fact we’re a small club and have to travel to get experience at events like this, we punch well above our weight.”Hamish and all the other members encour-age anyone who is interested in BMX to come down to the training at Tahunanui BMX track on Thursday evenings from 5.30pm.
