Stop storing so much ! – Why and what is RtCA ?
IBM Real Time Compression Appliance makes your NAS storage more Efficient
Shrinks primary/production active data up to 80% without degrading performance
Shrinks archived and backup data
Supports primary/production data, unlike other storage compression solutions
Can Improve performance of I/O-bound applications
Helps keep more data online for improved analytics and decision making
Reduces backup and disaster recovery time and operation expenses

No Performance Degradation – How? Real-time Compression!Move, Cache and Store Less!
• Compresses data on initial write• Less data stored on primary storage (up to 80%) • Much smaller I/O lower disk workload
• Compresses data before it gets to the storage array
• Larger effective storage cache (up to 80%) • Array can serve more requests from its read / write cache• Lower storage CPU overhead
• Does not cause performance degradation
• Reads/Writes are faster due to storage array’s response from cache instead of disk
• Additionally reads may come from appliance advanced read ahead cache (no write cache)

Orion (Oracle I/O Calibration Tool)
is a standalone tool for calibrating the I/O
performance for storage systems that are
intended to be used for Oracle databases.
The calibration results are useful for
understanding the performance capabilities of a
storage system, either to uncover issues that
would impact the performance of an Oracle
database or to size a new database installation

Comprestimator Tool overview
What is it?• Comprestimator is a host based utility for a fast estimation of a block device
compression ratioWhat does it do?
• Estimates compression ratios of data on block devices• Estimates:
− Portion of non-zero blocks in a volume− Compression ratio of non-zero blocks
• Guaranteed compression ration estimation: ~5% Max errorHow does it do it?
• FAST! < 60 sec no matter what volume size• Random sampling throughout a volume• Collects enough non-zero blocks to give compression ration w/ confidence
− The more zero blocks you have, the slower it will run
• Mathematical analysis yields confidence in our guarantee

Compression approaches are not all created equally…

“Today, [EMC] compression is still a post-process on primary
storage …”
Chad Sakac, EMC, blog post 7/11/11
“… users can be confident of using NetApp Compression on
low I/O volumes that have users who can tolerate higher
response times”
“NetApp adds Compression to its Storage Efficiency Portfolio”, Wikibon, January, 2011
“Our research shows that in-line compression solutions such
as those offered by IBM Real-time Compression are orders of
magnitude more efficient and ultimately more effective for
primary storage than alternatives that cannot operate in real-
time.”David Vellante, Chief Research Advocate, Wikibon, May, 2012
