Earlier that morning a fully-equipped and supervised team had been dispatched to continue maintenance and cleaning work at the dams,” reports Astral’s Director Risk Management, Evert Potgieter. The company’s Risk Manager, Danie Ras, and Mr Viljoen immediately contacted the Standerton Emergency Services, who were dispatched to the dams to assist with the situation. A full investigation was also launched. The SAPD dive unit was called in by the emergency services team to assist with the search and rescue. Following the suspension of the search at 19:00 on Friday night due to failing light and poor visibility, the unit returned to the site in the morning. The body was recovered at about 12:15 and identified as that of Mr Sibusiso Mbele. “The leadership and management of Astral are deeply saddened by the loss of Mr Mbele. We have notified his next of kin and we extend our sympathies to them. As Mr Mbele was an employee of Phakisa Labour Consultants, the necessary processes involving the Department of Labour will be handled by Phakisa. STANDERTON - Last week Wednesday the Mpela family arrived in Rooikopen with the full contents of their house loaded onto two tractors with trailers and a big truck. Their move to the township was not a joyful ride from the farm as they watched in disbelief as their belongings and furniture was offloaded following their eviction from the farm where they resided up until then. Margaret Mpela (30) and brother Bheki (28) were evicted from Kaalspruit Farm following a court order on 14 September 2014. According to Bheki, they were born and grew up on the farm and all was well and good for many years. His father worked on the farm until his death in 2005. They remained on the land with their mother until she passed away in 2013. He explained that his father worked for the parents of the current farmers who have since instated the eviction order against them. “We grew up together with the current farmers while our father was a loyal worker for their father. The senior famer and his wife passed away a few years ago, everything was normal on the farm, but the problem started in 2014 after our mother passed away. The farmers would often threaten us

STANDERTON - A couple from Extension Seven had a close shave with death recently when the car they were travelling in was involved in a crash with a double cab bakkie on the Robertsdrift Road just 2 km from the intersection with the R23. According to witnesses a bakkie belonging to a local company with three occupants was travelling on the R23 into Extension Seven, when the driver lost control and crashed into a Toyota Corolla that was travelling in the opposite direction.

The bakkie overturned on impact and plunged into the storm water drain on the left of the road, while the sedan was damaged on the driver’s side. Police confirmed that the two passengers of the bakkie were able to free themselves from the wreckage, the driver, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, fled the scene unharmed. Lt Nhlabathi said: “The couple in the sedan sustained serious injuries and were stabilized at the hospital before they were transferred to Highveld Medi-Clinic with suspected fractures”.

“The two passengers of the bakkie were admitted to Standerton Hospital where they received treatment.” A case of reckless driving and negligence was opened for investigation” Lt Nhlabathi said. DM

PROVINCIAL - Mpumalanga province arrested over 130 police officers on various crimes ranging from corruption, assault, murder, fraud, bribery and rape among others.

In a reply to questions, MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe stated that 132 police officers were arrested between the year 2010 and 2014. MEC Shongwe added that of the 132 arrested, 76 were found guilty.

54 officers were arrested for corruption, six for murder, seven for defeating the ends of justice, eight for fraud, four for armed robbery; 16 for theft, one for assault and discharging of a firearm, four for pos-session of an unlicensed firearm, eight for bribery, seven for attempted murder, seven for drunk driving, five for escape in lawful custody, two for assault and kidnapping, one for housebreaking, one for aiding escape from lawful custody and one for rape.

The MEC further promised that in order to curb and root out crimi-nal activities within the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga,

his office and the office of the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mark Magadlela, has drawn up a strategy which will give direction for personal behaviour, assessment and individual develop-ment and the strategy also includes the punitive part that would hinder the police or discourage them from these criminal tendencies.

According to the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation, police criminality is on the rise in this country. As a result, only 47,9% of South Africans trust the police, which are down from 60,2% since 2012.

These recent statistics have painted a disturbing trend emerging amongst our law enforcement officers who choose to violate the rights of others, we cannot sit idle and watch a few rotten potatoes ruin the reputation of our police men and women.

It is our responsibility to build a country where people are safe from crime. A country where all are equal before the law, regardless of who you are. JD

Family evicted - property damagedwith eviction, but we did not take their threats seriously, it was only in 2014 that we received a summons of eviction, and were ordered to make a court appearance”, Bheki said. The family approached the Department of Land Affairs Office in Ermelo to defend them. An official from the Department was dispatched to the farm for assessment but thereafter the family did not receive any communication from the department until they were evicted. Bheki feels they were let down by the Department of Land Affairs. He described the pain of leaving the graves of their parents and siblings who were buried on the farm as a bitter pill to swallow. The family left livestock behind on the farm.

They have been afforded temporary shelter in Rooikopen by a good samaritan. When Cosmos News contacted Ward 12 Councillor Mosia about the plight of the Mpela family, he said he was aware of their pending eviction. Now that they have been evicted, he will seek to provide temporary land for the family from Lekwa Municipality on Monday to put up a shack, like he did with the Mabaso family that experienced the same fate two years ago. NATIONAL – Escalating identity theft in the country costs individuals and business more than R1-billion a year, according to the South African Fraud Prevention Association. It may not always be possible to prevent identity theft, but consumers can reduce the risks by being vigilant when they are requested to reveal their personal information to a third party.

MUA Insurance Acceptance’s CEO, Ms Christelle Fourie, says it is important that South Africans ensure that they are financially protected against any loses suffered as a result of their identity being used unlawfully. Fourie says cybercrime and online identity theft seems to be the newest form of white collar crime. “Online fraud scams are also on the rise with criminals stealing consumers identities in an effort to create fake business used for illegal activities in the name of an unsuspecting consumer.”

Local authorities have also reported that fraudsters are using stolen identities to increase fake bank accounts in order to run up massive amounts of debt. Should this happen, the consumer could be left with a bad credit record. DM

STANDERTON – A Mpumalanga Provincial traffic inspector in Standerton was doing a routine check on vehicles when he stopped a bakkie pulling a trailer loaded with live chickens in Meyerville on Monday morning. First he discovered that the license disc did not correspond with the registration numbers on the bakkie.

His suspicion led him to follow up on the chickens on the back.

The driver was ordered to produce a permit to transport chicken. According to Lt Nhlabathi the driver could not produce a permit, and he could not explain the origin of the chickens except to say he was delivering

them to Embalenhle near Secunda. The traffic officer decided to escort the bakkie to the police station. The driver could not give the police information about where he sourced the chickens. When asked to go and show the police where he sourced the chicken, he said he can’t remember the name of the farm.

The 29-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen livestock. Lt Nhlabathi made a rough estimation of the amount of chickens loaded in the trailer and the back of the bakkie at around three hundred or more. The stock theft unit is investigating the case. DM

STANDERTON - Residents are cautioned to ensure their homes are properly protected against criminal invasion at all times. While police are doing everything in their power to curb the problem, they urge residents to be vigilant and to make sure it is as difficult as possible for criminals to gain access to their homes.

It is very clear that the housebreakings are not restricted to a specific area in town.

They are happening all over. People must make sure it is as difficult as possible for criminals to get inside their homes.

Make sure you lock your belongings away safely and that your outside gates are locked, the same with all security gates and doors.

Windows must be tightly secured; a win-dow left open just a fraction is an open invita-

tion to burglars. If possible, install security lights and an alarm system.

To prevent housebreakings and theft, resi-dents and business owners are advised to be careful about whom they employ, especially casual workers.

Do not hire people off the streets. If you must, do thorough background

checks, take a photo and get a copy of their ID book, as well as the address of their next of kin. It is also important to be cautious when letting people into your house to do jobs such as tiling, painting or cleaning.

Get references and use only reputable ser-vice providers.

Residents are also encouraged to report any suspicious-looking people, vehicles or activi-ties to the SAPS. JD

A resident in Sakhile is fed up with a water leak in front of her house. She reported this specific leak more than three weeks ago, but to no avail. The residents of the house are not able to make use of the only gate to gain access to their house and had to dig trenches to lead the water away from their home. When Cosmos News visited the scene, contract workers were busy with repairs.

STANDERTON - Many orphans and those from the poorest families in Ex-tension Six, Seven and the RDP set-tlement are receiving love, care and comfort from a church in Extension Seven, Sakhile.

The Church Of Jesus under the leadership fo Pastor JR Radebe is serving daily meals to over one hun-dred children of which 60% are or-phans.

Junior Pastor, M Molefi, said as a church they were touched by the plight of many children who go to

school without lunch boxes and worst of all, most of them go to bed with empty stomachs.

This prompted the church to take the responsibility on themselves to provide meals and other services for less fortunate children. Monday to Friday children come to the church for meals after school. Once they have had their meals, volunteers help pupils with homework and other as-signments. On Saturdays the children are taken through recreational activi-ties, while volunteers do their laundry

for them. Asked about any financial backing from the state, Pastor Molefi said they have registered with the Department of Social Services as a Non Profit Organization (NPO), but until such time the church is funding the project. He further added that in-dividuals in the community donated clothes to the children to keep them warm. In conclusion Pastor Molefi expressed his appreciation to many individuals and members of the church who make a contribution to sustain the project. DM

STANDERTON - The theme of the Women’s Day celebrations for the SAVF Women’s Group on 6 August was thoroughly enjoyed by the 24 members of the group as well as the SAVF personnel. The ladies dressed up with hats and enjoyed some tea with refreshments and joyful singing.

Petra Fischer, the speaker of the day, used three Biblical women namely Ruth, Abigale, and Mary, mother of Jesus, as symbols to portray women’s

choices in life. Women may be scared in the unknown or overwhelmed in circumstances, or obedient- but still find it difficult to deal with the consequences. The message was clear. A women’s strength is in what she believes in. Her choices should be driven by her beliefs and not by what is happening around her. It was an enjoyable morning and everyone agreed that it was fun, the refreshments were excellent, and on a spiritual level it was invigorating and even life changing. JD

My vriend, Jesus was geen vreemdeling vir emosionele of fisiese pyn, armoede of swaarkry nie.

Daar is n lied in my hart! Máár my juiglied verander in ‘n treurlied! Die sonskyn is skielik net ‘n droom! Vrouedag verander in slawedag en ek is ‘n waterdraer! Want dit is dag 17 sonder water hier in Kosmospark.

moet 110 liter water indra huis toe.

Elna Engelbrecht

STANDERTON - In February 2014 the Dep-uty Minister of Higher Education and Train-ing, Mr Mduduzi Manana, launched a decade of Artisan programmes. This programme is said to produce 30 000 artisans by 2024. The launching follows the release of a white paper (an authoritative publication in parlia-ment) for post-school education and training by the minister Dr Blade Nzimande which was approved by the cabinet in November 2013.

The Deputy Minister in his commencement speech said: “The roll-out of the programme over the next ten years is a critical and integral part of a good artisan training system that is an urgent priority, meaning that each and eve-ry TVET College around the country will be implementing the process that was started by Ekurhuleni East TVET College in Gauteng.”

He also announced that they have reached a formal agreement with all their public TVET Colleges across the country that in August eve ry year, the month is declared an open col-lege month to allow employers and learners from schools, in particular Grade 8 and 9, to visit the college workshops in order to see the

programmes offered at each college for them-selves.

In this way learners will have a full under-standing of opportunities for technical and vocational programmes available to them. In implementing the declaration of college open month, Gert Sibande Standerton campus, in-vited eight secondary schools in and around Sakhile to embark on a workshop tour from Monday to Thursday, in the week before last, taking two schools per day, learners were ex-posed to welding, civil engineering, technical engineering, electrical engineering, computer labs, and the hospitality facility, Mr Collen Nxongwana presented learners with inside information about all aspects of the courses offered by the college.

Most of the learners who attended the tour were very excited and said that the tour was an eye opener that can assist them to acquire skills beyond their secondary school acade-mic achievements.

Schools that took part in the college tour were: Khunjuliwe, Earlybird, Thobelane, Thuto-Thebe, Jandrel, Stanwest, Madi and Sikhetheleni. DM

STANDERTON - For three months since April, Quick Check Supermarket embarked on a pro-motional campaign to plough back to the community. R100 000 in prizes was to be won by lucky customers. Every customer had to buy goods in the store and on the receipt a customer was given, a unique number that is entered was a lucky draw.

On Saturday, 1 August, hun-dreds of hopeful customers gath-ered at the supermarket waiting for the big moment, when seven lucky draw winners would walk away with massive prizes. For transparency and fairness, the draw conductor would call any-body from the crowd to come for-ward and draw a ticket from the box bearing a name and unique number of the customer. The first lucky number to be drawn was Eric Mokeleshi, but the cus-tomer was not at the supermarket by then. His absence disqualified him from entering into the final leg of the draw as stipulated by the terms and conditions of the draw.

Seven lucky customers were drawn and banded together for

the big draw. in the second round, each one of the seven customers was given an opportunity to pick a balloon from a box. Once a cus-tomer has picked a balloon, they would open the balloon bear-ing the number inside with each number linked to a prize. Samuel Nkosi (54) won a Lounge Suite, Zakhele Xaba (42) won a bed-room suite, Johannes Molefe (56) won a dining room suite, Siphiwe Mashinini (38) won a Kitchen table with chairs, Lebohang Mohai(31) won a Fridge, Esther Thwala (57) won a Chest Freezer, and Makhosi Radebe (39) won a stove.

VOLKSRUST - It is exciting times for Volksrust High School where there is a cul-ture developing amongst learners of being aware of fellow learners’ needs and address-ing those needs. Two learners of Volksrust

High School took it upon themselves to raise funds for Louis Hildebrandt Children’s Home. Marshall van der Schyff arranged a stand-up comedy evening which was well attended by fellow learners and raised an amount of R647

and Marlee Pringle raised funds from the learners in the hostel. A cheque for the amount of R1013 was hand-ed over to Mrs Alta van Heerden on 3 August. JD

STANDERTON - The chilly weather could not dampen the high spirit of the community of Sakhile in Standerton when Anglo American Coal South Africa handed over a state of art community health centre on Thursday. The R26 million centre has come in handy to the community of Rooikopen whose members had to travel a long distance to the nearest health facility in the past.

Anglo American in partnership with the Mpumalanga Department of Health and Lekwa Local Municipality indentified the need in the Integrated Development Plan to provide access to a full range of primary health services manned by professionals from the Department of Health. It was on this basis that Anglo American took the initiative as a social responsibility to make funds available to build the centre. The cooperatives believe that in South Africa’s developing economy, mining is a key platform for growth through the industry’s delivery of infrastructure, health, training, community development and employment.

Anglo American Coal South Africa CEO Mr Themba Mkhwanazi in his handover-speech said: “Day to day challenges faced by our host communities are many and at Anglo American our approach to community development is to leave a sustainable contribution and legacy beyond the lifetime of the mine, our partnership with communities comes through creating employment opportunities, and investing in large-scale infrastructure development projects that bring essential services closer to the communities like this one in Rooikoppen with 15 000 inhabitants.

Walking through this centre, my heart is filled with pride knowing that in times of emergency, when every second may be the difference between life and death, precious time will not be lost in travelling to the hospital in town. We are proud to bring a facility that will assist in the testing of HIV and Aids, Tuberculosis and other chronic diseases. We hope that this facility named after the stalwart of Liberation, Mama Lilian Mambakazi will be equally successful to give true meaning to our end Liné.” I

In his keynote address, the MEC of Mpumalanga Department of Health Mr GP Mashego said: “We are grateful for the multimillion health centre that will serve the community, we are grateful that even our senior citizens will have healthcare at their doorstep, we are grateful that the fully equipped facility will assist communities in testing for various chronic diseases and receive treatment in the early stages. Thank you Anglo American, your continued partnership with the Government to make a valuable contribution in the communities will go a long way to make a difference.”

The MEC further appealed to people not to vent their anger about poor service delivery on a property like the health centre, he lambasted those who burn property during service delivery protests and told everybody to take ownership of the centre and look after it for the sake of generations to come. The handover was witnessed by hundreds of jubilant community members with the new Lekwa Executive Mayor Councillor LR Dhlamini in attendance. DM

Gaan loer gerus by http://kosmosnuus.wix.com/kosmosnuus#!blog/c1i69.

STANDERTON - As Aug ust is being observed as wom-en’s month, a school teacher in Kosmos Park has dedicated her time and energy to empower young girls in the com-munity by means of teaching them baking skills. Ms Susan Mfuphi, a teacher at Grooidraai Dam Primary School, said as a mother she has been concerned to see young girls loi-tering in the streets over the weekends and school holidays.

She decided to establish a netball team for girls in Kos-mos Park, but the idea is temporarily on hold until the piece of land she has been allocated by Lekwa Municipality has been leveled and rehabilitated. She decided to start a cake baking project to empower girls in the kitchen. 24 girls aged between 10 and 17 have joined the project.

Due to limited space in her own kitchen she is taking four girls at a time through the programme. The programme will run at her house on Saturdays until she has covered everything. Susan said: “I am passionate about cooking and enjoy every moment in the kitchen and I want to teach the mothers of tomorrow the necessary skills they will need in the kitchen in the years to come.” DM

Hengeltalent maak EHS trots

Hoërskool Ermelo se o-14 A-span het in Krugersdorp by Hoërskool Noordheuwel deelgeneem.

DK
