Dear FMA Band Families,

Greetings once again from the Fremd Bands!  The year has flown by and it is hard to believe that almost three quarters of the year is over.  Thank you very much to all of the FMA families who participated in our 12th annual “Band Benefit Dinner and Raffle” back in February.  We were able to raise over $10,000 for the Viking Marching Band and Band program.  Thank you very much for your support, generosity, and dedication to the Fremd Bands!

We are very proud to be graduating fifty‐eight seniors from our band program this spring.  While we will greatly miss our talented senior class, next year’s enrollment looks very promising for our bands.  We currently have just over 70 incoming freshmen enrolled in band, with a total enrollment of almost 290 students for next fall.  We are proud to still be the largest band program in District 211 and one of the largest programs in the state!

Congratulations to our band students selected to perform in the District 211 Honors Orchestra this past February: Grace Liu, Julia Cai, Hazuki Okuda, Jessica Kopec, Roy Cho, Melinda Coleman, Andy Hong, Brenna O’Donoghue, Emma Davies‐Hogg, Eden Schultz, Sarah Behery, Claire Bowman, Elias Pagones, Cameron Harro, Alexandra Baumgart, Mateo Diaz, Nick Liotti, Bruce Liu, Charlie Kaye, and Nathan Cornwell.

This past winter our two jazz bands and jazz combo performed very well at two local jazz festivals and our annual “Jazz and Java” show.  Our 15th annual “Jazz and Java” Concert was a huge success and featured three vocal A Cappella choirs, Jazz Combo, Jazz Lab Band, and Jazz Ensemble.  Guest jazz trombonist Tim Coffman definitely added to the excitement of the evening.  Thank you to all of the FMA families that made it out to the concert.  Congratulations to all students involved in the Jazz Lab Band and Jazz Ensemble and thank you for your hard work over the past five months!

On Thursday March 5th we hosted our annual Fremd Band “Solo and Ensemble Festival” in the evening.  The event had about 180 solos and ensembles performing throughout the evening.  The event went very well and our students received excellent feedback from the nine clinicians/judges.  Thank you FMA for funding this very worthwhile educational experience!

On Wednesday March 11th the Wind Symphony traveled to Concordia University (River Forest) to participate in a two hour clinic with Dr. Richard Fischer (Director of Bands).  Thank you FMA for funding this clinic and wonderful opportunity for our students.  Our Wind Ensemble will also be performing on Thursday March 19th at the “Northshore Concert Band Festival” at Pick‐Staiger Concert Hall on the campus of Northwestern University.  The band will have the opportunity to work with Mallory Thompson, Director of Bands at Northwestern.

This April, the Symphonic Band, Symphonic Winds, Wind Ensemble, and Wind Symphony will perform at two outstanding local band festivals.  The Wind Symphony, Symphonic Winds, and Wind Ensemble will perform at the “Chicagoland Invitational Concert Band Festival” on Saturday April 18th at Hersey HS.  Symphonic Band will

Choral Corner Hello Choir Families,

It has been a great start to 2015 with the Fremd Choirs!

In January, we hosted the annual Junior High Choir Exchange with Plum Grove, Sundling, and Sandburg schools. It was a fun day and I look forward to working with these students next year.

I am also excited to start a new choir next year, just for the men- Men’s Chorale (C136). This is going to be a wonderful opportunity for the men to develop their voices and sing male repertoire as well as combine with the females to create a large mixed choir.

Congratulations to the All-State choir students:

Chloe Cho

Quinn Jackson

Emilie Kouatchou

Vance Lehman

The Jazz and Java performance on February 24 featured the jazz bands as well as Perfect Harmony, Men’s A Cappella, and Audial Sunshine. Ben Mathew and Amy Sedlak also sang solos with the band and did a fantastic job!

The first payment for the Disney trip is due by mail on March 15 to Jennifer Jones. We hope to involve as many students as possible because it is going to be a memorable trip over Thanksgiving break! We recorded an audition tape to be eligible to sing for 2 performances at the Candlelight Processional and receive notification from Disney in April. Check out the Fremd Choir website for more information about the trip and all of the required documents: http://fremdchoirs.weebly.com/travel.html

The choir students have 2 new opportunities to fundraise this spring (especially if they are going on the Disney trip). Information was emailed about the Yankee Candle online sale with orders due on April 15. The Manna gift card fundraiser is also online and gift cards that are purchased by Sunday night at 9 p.m. will be available for pick-up on Wednesdays from 7:40-8 p.m.

Auditions for choir next year will be from March 4-13 in sectionals and during class time. Practice files are available on the Fremd Choirs website.

The choir solo/ensemble festival was on Tuesday, March 3. This was a rewarding experience for all students participating and they received immediate feedback from the judge in a clinic.

The next choir concert is on Wednesday, April 1 at 7 p.m. at Cutting Hall in Palatine (please note the date change). The dress rehearsal is on Tuesday, March 31 and time slots for each choir were emailed to parents and students. The concert will feature a variety of music from around the world including Spain, Italy, England, and Brazil as well as American folk and contemporary songs. We would love to see you there!

Emilie Kouatchou, a senior in Chamber Singers, was selected as one of the concerto aria soloists, and will perform with the Symphony Orchestra at the Concerto Aria Concert on April 10.

The 3 a cappella groups will have their own concert on Friday, April 24 at 7 p.m. at Countryside Church. We will sell tickets for $5. This is a great way to see Perfect Harmony, Men’s A Cappella, and Audial Sunshine perform their entire repertoire in one show.

Thank you for your continued support of the FHS Choirs! Happy Spring!

Retrospective

Congratulations to the following Fremd musicians who were selected to be members of the 2015 District 211 Honors Orchestra. District-wide auditions were held in early January and these students were chosen among the best in our district. Under the direction of Dr. Timothy Semanik from Bradley University, the orchestra performed an exciting and inspirational concert at Fremd High School on February 14, 2015.

Orchestra (con’t)

Looking Ahead:

Concert and Philharmonic Orchestras will be performing in a joint concert with the HEHS Concert and Philharmonic Or-chestras at Hoffman Estates High School on Thursday, March 19. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Each orchestra will be performing 2 pieces and we are looking forward to sharing this musical evening with the orchestras from Hoffman Estates High School.

Symphony Orchestra is preparing for the 2015 Concerto/Aria Concert with this year’s competition winners Sarah Behery, bassoon; Julia Cai, piano; Karisa Chiu, violin; Emilie Kouatchou, soprano; and Nathan Mo, cello. This is always an exciting and unique concert as we feature 5 of our music students performing at a very high level. Please join us for this concert on Friday, April 10 @ 7 pm in the Fremd Auditorium.

*****Order your DQ Blizzards now to enjoy after the Concerto/Aria Concert—- see attached order form*****

Seniors – you will need to return your tuxedo jackets, cummerbunds and bow ties at the end of the Concerto/Aria Concert.

We are very excited to announce that we will have 4 orchestras at Fremd next year. All students enrolled in orchestra for next year have just completed their placement auditions and it was truly a pleasure listening to each student! Each student has the opportunity to be placed into any one of the orchestras (based on their audition). The names and levels of the or-chestras are: Concert Orchestra (C124), Philharmonic Orchestra (C224), Chamber Strings (C324) and Symphony Orchestra (C424).

If you know someone who would like to be a part of the orchestra next year but who is not signed up yet, it is not too late to add orchestra to their schedule. Please have them contact me right away so we can get that added to their schedule for next year ([email protected])

Did you know?

Spring time is a great time to get your instrument checked after the harsh winter. Take them to a reputable string store (a few suggestions include: The String Project - Palatine, Park Violins – Arlington Heights, Cassandra Strings – Algonquin) to have them checked so that they are in good playing condition.

Instruments – check for open seams, cracks, warped bridges, is it time to get new strings? (You should replace strings once a year.)

Bows – re-hair (once a year – at least), is the stick straight?

Summer Camps – there are some great opportunities to continue playing your instrument over the summer! Please email me for suggestions!

District 211 is offering an orchestra camp for the first time. Please check the summer school/camp information.

String Orchestra Camp This camp is open to any string student with prior school orchestra experience. Music selections

will cover a variety of styles from classical to pop as well as technical skills such as vibrato and shifting. The session will culminate in a concert open to the public on the last day of camp. This camp is open to all District 211 students.

Levels: P920 Tuesday and Wednesday Both Semesters 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Fundraising Made Simple! We have some exciting news to share about a new fundraising program for our organization. It's called the Manna Group Scrip Program. The scrip program will allow us to fundraise while we shop. Several local and national retailers participate in the manna program including Jewel, Mariano's, Best Buy, Speedway, Starbucks and Target to name a few. How do these vendors help us raise money? It's simple...the vendors agree to sell their gift cards to us at a discount. Families buy these gift cards at full face value and our organization keeps the bal-ance as profit. Gift cards can be used for everyday shopping too not just Christmas, holidays and special occasions. Use your gift cards for groceries, gas, clothing, restaurants and household items. For example, if you buy a $100 Jewel card, you pay $100 and $4 (4%) goes into your student’s FMA account. Different companies have different percentages of profit for the student. Everything is done through the manna website. However, I need to register families with their own individual accounts so you can start earning money soon. Please email the following information to [email protected]: Last name Address Phone Number (in case I need to contact you regarding an order) Email address Child’s choir class (Treble Choir, Viking Chorale, AWC, Chamber Singers), Band (C,S,SW,WE,WS), Orchestra(Concert, Philharmonic, Symphony) or the FMA General Fund Orders will be placed online weekly. If your order is entered by 9 p.m. on Sundays it will be included in that week's orders. Orders will be available for pick-up on Wednesdays outside of the choir room (Room 17) from 7:40-8 p.m. Please contact Sue Lech with any questions at [email protected] or text or phone at 847-702-7345.

Floral Design Showcase We had a wonderful evening of Floral Harmony on January 20th! Many thanks to the local florists who dazzled us with their talents: Busse’s Flowers and Gifts, Kinsch Village Florist & Garden Center, Art Expres-sions, Blue Daisy Floral & Design, and Rose Garden Florists, as well as Janet Gallagher, AIFD, for her expert commentary. Congratulations to all of the lucky winners who got to take home one of the stunning arrangements! Plans are underway for next year's Showcase - stay tuned for our "save the date"!
