Use of MESA Stations in GMES & Africa
IGAD CLIMATE PREDICTION AND APPLICATION CENTER (ICPAC)
Protected Areas Monitoring11
For the EA region, Protected Areas are not only a
habitat conservation resource but economic
resource
Two main threats to
Effects of climate change & variability
Human population growth
IGAD CLIMATE PREDICTION AND APPLICATION CENTER (ICPAC)
Objective – PA Monitoring12
Monitor and assess the state of natural habitats at
various levels to support decision making process
Monitoring eco-climatic
conditions within and
around the Protected Areas
Modelling forage
availability, demand and
forage balance for
protected areas
Land Use Land Cover
Change of Protected Areas
Highlight potential locations
for human-wildlife conflicts
Understand and project
animal movement in search
of pasture
Provide information useful
for Wildlife Authorities when
planning wildlife
translocation across/within
parks

Rangelands cover big part of the EA region (Arid
and Semi-arid Lands ASALs) and form a critical
ecosystem home to pastoralists, agro pastoral
communities and wildlife conservancies.
