1394 Friday 19 October 2018 Dear Members of the Loyola College Community, Welcome back to Advent Term for 2018. I especially welcome back the staff and students who went on the Philippines Immersion. By all accounts the experience was very positive and reports indicated that our students were a credit to themselves, their College and their families. The forging of this ongoing relationship will see an exchange taking place again with students from the Jesus the Good Shepherd School next year when Loyola will have the opportunity of hosting them. I hope that all students were able to rest and enjoy the break and have now returned ready for this final term of the academic year. Student Leaders 2019 I am delighted to announce the College Captains for 2019. We congratulate Amelia Dunn (11 AMJB) and Harrison Mills (11 FSKE) on their appointment to this important role. We wish these young people the very best as they serve the College community through their leadership in 2019. All student leaders for next year will be announced at the final Full College Assembly to be held next week at which the traditional handover ceremony will take place. Staffing Matters We congratulate Ms Georgia Lowe who was married during the school holidays. We wish her and her husband Seb every blessing for the future. Senior ACS Sports Assembly On Wednesday of last week I attended the above event which acknowledged many students from Years 10-12 and their contribution to the Senior ACS sports program this year. It was fitting that we recognised these young people’s achievements in front of their peers. I thank Mr Baxter, Director of Sport and Ms Coward for organising this event. Year 7 Enrolment Offer for 2020 Offers for Year 7, 2020 were posted this week. Congratulations to the students who have been accepted into Year 7. Unfortunately, due to the very high number of applicants we have had to place many students on a waiting list. We ask families who have been successful to confirm their acceptance as soon possible. In the event that there may be some non-acceptances we will then be able to proceed with a second round of offers. We are delighted in the very strong community interest in the College and its reputation in the wider community. College Committee Dinner On Thursday evening of this week I attended the Annual Dinner to thank the students who have held senior leadership portfolios within the College this year

1394 Friday 19 October 2018

Dear Members of the Loyola College Community,

Welcome back to Advent Term for 2018.

Page 2: 1394 Friday 19 October 2018 - Loyola College, Melbourne€¦ · ready for this final term of the academic year. Student Leaders 2019 I am delighted to announce the College Captains

and we also acknowledged their parents who have supported them in their roles. The Dinner was held in the Function room and was a very pleasant evening. I thank Mrs Salmic and Ms Solomon for overseeing the organisation of the evening.

Government Funding for Catholic schools Families would be aware of the recent Government announcements at both State and Federal level that both major political parties have indicated their strong support to increase funding to Catholic schools. Elsewhere in this newsletter we have included letters from the Director of Catholic Education Melbourne, Mr Stephen Elder outlining the commitments being made to the Catholic system. What this may mean for Loyola is still unclear but hopefully we will have some good news in the near future.

Farewell to Year 12 students As our Year 12 students complete their formal studies with us next week it is fitting that we pay tribute to them in this their final newsletter before their formal classes conclude. We take this time to reflect on their contribution and achievements over the past six years and celebrate the conclusion of their secondary education. Firstly, I thank our two College Captains: Renee Shannon (CMST) and Peter Kearney (KFMM) for their leadership of the student body over 2018. Both these young people have worked hard and have made a wonderful contribution this year. I also thank all members of the College Committee who have exercised leadership in many ways throughout this year. I am confident that next week will be a wonderful week of Year 12 celebrations for our College community.

I have recently spoken at a Year 12 assembly to highlight to the students the importance of remaining focussed on study in the coming weeks as they approach their examinations. I also highlighted the importance of safety in the post examination celebratory period and to look out for each other during this time to avoid any unpleasant or dangerous incidents. I encourage parents to discuss this with their children if they are going away with others to celebrate.

I encourage the Year 12 students to become active in the Loyola College Alumni Association next year so that they may maintain strong links with the College community into the future. I wish all the Year 12 students every grace and blessing for their future and in particular wish them well in the upcoming examination period.

To those families of Year 12 students who this year will conclude their association with Loyola, I thank you for your commitment to Catholic Education and for your support of Loyola College over many years. May you continue to be blessed in the important role that you play as parents.

I wish all every blessing during these important times of celebration thanking God for the wonderful opportunities available to our students here at Loyola. May our graduating class of 2018 be inspired by the example of St Ignatius and leave Loyola living out this year’s theme of Walking with others.

HAIR WITH HEART Last Friday, two year 12s Renée and Bridget donated 40cm of their hair to Variety, who create wigs for kids that can’t grow their own hair due to cancer or a medical condition. So far they have raised $1,600 with their aim to reach $2000. It would be greatly appreciated if everyone could donate to such a worthy cause and place a smile on the children’s faces as they have been given a chance to feel normal.

To donate to this worthy cause please follow this link, https://hairwithheart.everydayhero.com/au/the-big-chop-8.

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (IGNATIAN MISSION & IDENTITY)

Philippines Immersion 2018 I have tried to start writing this article a number of times and just keep coming up with clichés for the opening sentence “Wow, what an experience ….” or “I feel so privileged to have accompanied such wonderful young people ….” or “The hospitality and generosity of our Filipino hosts was outstanding….”

All are true. Our party of ten Loyola students, Sister Nelia, Miss Elizabeth Gartland and myself met at Melbourne Airport in the early hours of Wednesday the 19th September and arrived at Jesus the Good Shepherd School (P-12) later that afternoon for a welcome meal and then another drive to our accommodation at ‘Watercamp Resort’.

The next day the program began with a joyous welcome from the ‘buddies’ who had been communicating with our students through social media previously and then a welcome Mass followed by the ‘Loyolians’ spending the next few days with their ‘Shepherdian buddies’.

JGSS have a very professional student news team which produced a report of each day’s activities. I have included a couple of these in this edition of the Ignatian.

On the Saturday, the ‘Loyolians’ participated in the JGSS and ‘Friends of Peace’ activity and feeding program for local children. This was one of the most moving experiences of the program as our students saw the face of poverty in a context different to their own.

Later in the Immersion they participated in similar programs run by the Pastorelle Sisters in Lingayen, about 6 hours north of Manila. Our party spent three days in this area and were hosted by Jesus the Good Shepherd Development School (primary). Here we were also made to feel very welcome with a cultural show, visits to class rooms and the school decorated with Australian Flags.

During this time we had lunch with Bishop Soc Villegas in Dagupan. We were grateful for the Bishop’s hospitality – he introduced some of us to the Filipinos favourite fast food, ‘Jollibee’ – as well as his insights into the role of the Church in assisting in alleviating poverty and standing up for human rights.

Undoubtably, the highlight of the program for our students was the connections they made with their Filipino buddies and the time they spent in their homes.

This year’s College theme, ‘Walking with others’ was also the theme of the Immersion and a reflection focus. Jesus the Good Shepherd School and Loyola have a mutual relationship. The 2018 Immersion was Loyola’s second visit to the School and last year we hosted the inaugural visit of JGSS to Melbourne. We look forward to welcoming another group in 2019.

On behalf of the group I thank the students who participated, Miss Elizabeth Gartland for accompanying the students, Sister Nelia Llanto sjbp for her planning, the Pastorelle Sisters and the principal, Sr. Ales Paz Pamplona, sjbp and staff of JGSS Imus and JGSDS Lingayen. A special thanks to the Filipino buddies and their families and also the wonderful Miss Wency C. Provido, High School Level Academic Coordinator who was our main point of contact and co-ordinated the Imus part of the program.

Applications for Loyola’s 2019 Immersion We are looking for further applications for students to participate in the 2019 Timor Leste Immersion Students need to write to Mr Favrin, stating the reasons why they should be selected as one of Loyola’s representatives for the East Timor Immersion, (see Ignatian August 23). Email Mr Lynch for further information: [email protected]

Toiletries for the Philippines Update Below is an update on the outstanding charity work of Adrian Parisi (MEET) who selflessly collected and packed toiletry items donated from the entire Loyola community during term 3.

Over the holidays, Adrian and Alex packed 297 Toiletry Packs. Each pack contained a toothbrush, toothpaste and a bar or soap as well as an assortment of other toiletries.

Also collected were two boxes of larger toiletry items such as shampoos, deodorants and sanitary items which will also be passed onto Kadasig.

Thank you so much for supporting Adrian for getting behind the toiletry collection, it was very much appreciated.

FROM THE STUDENTS

Organising the event took a lot of hard work from the College Committee. There were a few setbacks, for example a water dunking machine was going to be hired however, the expense would be hard to cover so a compromise had to be made. Buckets were bought along with ice for a classic ice bucket challenge. The College committee also had to organise the teachers who were willing to participate. All members of the committee had to help round up teachers. Following this, posters had to be made and it was the House Captain’s task to hang them around the mentor rooms, drum up some buzz about the event and start raising funds. Pizza was also ordered in order to increase funds raised. They were sold in front of the ice bucket challenge in order to bring in a larger crowd. Renee Shannon and Peter Kearney our school captains also participated in the ice bucket challenge. This was a fun twist on the challenge and got everyone more excited which ultimately raised more funds.

Overall it was a great day and will help a lot of people in East Timor.

Spot the Difference results from Ignatian Friday 07 September FROM THE STUDENTS

On September 13 the Loyola College Committee ran the very successful event Teacher Dunking. Prior to the day all members went around their houses and asked to support the reason for this event, in this case, East Timor. In raising this money, we were able to achieve our main goal of helping those in need. East Timor are in desperate need of these funds and so we should do all we can to support them. On the day of the main event, we witnessed teachers being soaked with ice cold water on a 16 degree day. The participating teachers were both Mr Lynch’s, Mr Simpson, Mr Lee, Mr Leary, Mr McCarthy and Miss Swift and they were kind enough to participate in our cause and were essentially the ones who drew the crowds to get the final donations. Mr Chris Lynch was the most devoted being dressed as Pikachu, Mr Anthony Lynch being an amazing Collingwood supporter and Mr Simpson who couldn’t tear himself away from the pizza, everyone who was part of this event helped raise our overall total of approximately $800. This is an amazing effort and will help those who need it the most. These funds will be going with next year’s immersion tour to East Timor. A big thank you to Mr Valentino for providing the photos that we’ve seen and Mrs Curcio for her enthusiastic contributions on the microphone.
