En febrero de 2011 el asam-bleísta Gil Cedillo (D-Los Án-geles), presentó la enmienda legislativa (Assembly Bill) AB 353; proyecto de ley que bus-caba evitar el decomiso de los conductores que manejan sobrios y sin licencia de con-ducir cuando son detenidos en un retén.

Esta enmienda ahora está en el escritorio del gobernador Je-rry Brown esperando su firma; el gobernador tiene hasta el 09 de octubre para firmar o vetar el proyecto de ley.

Activistas latinos creen que durante los conductores indo-cumentados a menudo reciben injustamente infracciones de tráfico. “Va a ser una gran ayu-da para las familias de inmi-grantes”, dice Mark Silverman, abogado del Centro de Recur-sos Legales para Inmigrantes en San Francisco, “que tengan sus autos pronto significa que pueden ir a trabajar y llevar a sus hijos a la escuela.”

Después de servir en el ejército durante cuatro años, Salsedo comenzó a trabajar como oficial de policía con el Departamento de Policía de Stockton en 1991. 20 años después Salsedo fue promo-vido en Septiembre a Sub Director del departamento de Policía de Stockton y designado como Comandante de la Oficina de Apoyo.

Attorney General Kamala Harris pulled out of the “national settlement talks with the banking industry concerning unlawful mortgage and foreclosure practices,” she wrote on a letter to U.S. Attorney General Thomas Perrelli and Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller.

“It became clear to me that Cali-fornia was being asked for a broader release of claims than we can accept and to excuse conduct that has not been adequately investigated,” said Harris in a phone press interview on Monday, October 3rd

During the last quarter of 2010, in-dividual States filed lawsuits against five large banks including J.P. Morgan, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Ally Finan-cial which resulted in a 50-state class action lawsuit by a coalition formed by its respectful Attorney Generals.

“We have the most homes and most home borrowers in default,” wrote Ha-rris. California ranks among the highest foreclosed states and in the state she listed Stockton to be the third with the most foreclosures.

“We meet regularly with California’s State Attorney General,” said Luis Sanchez, Stockton Office Manager at NeighborWorks® Sacramento Region, “I understand that she reviewed all op-tions and she is opting to go for the one that best serves Californian.”

On February, 2011 Assem-blyman Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) introduced Assembly Bill (AB) 353; a bill seeking to prevent impoundment of vehicles of sober drivers who are caught driving without a driver’s license during a chec-kpoint.

The bill presently sits in the office of the Governor Jerry Brown waiting for his signa-ture; the governor has until October 9th to sign or vetoed the bill.

Latino activists believe that during checkpoints undo-cumented drivers are often unfairly targeted to receive traffic infractions. “It will be a huge help to immigrant fami-lies,” says Mark Silverman, an attorney from the Immigrant Legal Resource Center in San Francisco, “having their cars back early means they can continue to go to work and take their kids to school.”

The proposed law would would get rid of the 30-day im-pound for unlicensed drivers and would allow an unlicensed driver to have a person with a valid license to take the vehicle home without paying fines.

“It will limit the amount of time that their cars are towed and therefore the amount of money that they have to pay,” says Silverman.

According to the city of Stoc-kton, the approximate total cost for the towing, storage, and release fees for a 30-day impound is $1,860.00 and if the owner is unable to pay, the vehicle will be sold to cover the fees.

A lesson worth a lifetime: Grammar School Students learn about finances

El Banco, Community Credit Union (Unión de Crédito de la Comunidad Premier) en colabo-ración con Junior Achievement (Escuela Primaria) realizó su segundo campamento anual financiero para niños de grados tercero a quinto el martes, 27 de septiembre.

Un programa que a través de actividades interactivas enseña a niños la importancia de ganar, gastar, compartir y ahorrar dinero.

“Enseñarle a los niños sobre la responsabilidad financiera no sólo es importante, es vital”, dice Starla Houston, Gerente Pres-tamista en la Unión de Crédito y también instructora de uno de los talleres.

Houston, explica que los niños que aprenden habilidades efecti-vas de dinero son más propensos a convertirse en adultos capaces de tomar decisiones financieras adecuadas, evitar el endeuda-miento excesivo y alcanzar sus metas financieras.

También ella recomienda a los padres el dar a los niños “domingo” o “mesada” como una forma de ahorro y así el estable-cer metas financieras, “ellos [los padres] deberían dar pequeñas tareas y así una moneda aquí y una moneda acá.”

“Si a un niño se le dice, ¿quie-res ir al cine o deseas guardar tu dinero? Normalmente se va a elegir el cine”, dice Houston,” pero si está ahorrando su dinero para algo específico, como una bicicleta nueva, les hará decir que no.”

Simultáneamente, en un nivel diferente estas son decisiones financieras que los adultos tienen que hacen todos los días.

Stockton, CA — A Community Credit Union in partnership with Junior Achievement held its 2nd annual free Financial Camp for 3rd-5th grades on Tuesday, Sep-tember 27th.

Through interactive activities kids learned the importance of earning, spending, sharing and saving money.

“Teaching kids financial res-ponsibility is not just important is vital,” says Starla Houston, Lending Manger at the Credit Union who facilitated instruction at one of the workshops.

Houston explains that kids who learn effective money skills are more likely to become adults who can make the right financial decisions, avoid excessive debt and reach their financial goals.

She encourages parents to give their children allowances as a form of saving and setting financial goals, “They should be given little chores and a quarter here a quarter there.”

“If a child is told, do you want to go to the movies or you want to save your money? They are

normally going to choose the movies,” says Houston, “but if they are saving their money for something specific like a new bike, it will make them say no”

Simultaneously, at a different level these are the same financial choices, adults have to make every single day.

Houston has also taught wor-kshops on budgeting for first time home buyers, “[many] people that I taught classs say, ‘I did not know that why didn’t they offer this information in school!’”

So you may wonder, how young is too young to learn about mo-ney?

For Houston the earlier chil-dren can work with money and understand that money is a tool they will have a better opportuni-ty to be smart consumers.”

This is important because the economic crisis has impacted whole families including kids says Houston.

“Although they [children] do not understand concepts such as unemployment and foreclosure, they do know that something is happening, they understand that there was not enough money”

Ballet Folklórico es un térmi-no ampliamente utilizado para describir todas las formas de la danza folklórica mexicana, la cual combina elementos de la historia, el folklore y la cultura mexicana con el ritmo y el movimiento.

“El ballet folklórico mexicana ha existido durante cientos de años, dijo Becerra, bailarina de Los Danzantes de Pacífico, con más de 20 años de experiencia y Profesora de Español de la Univer-sidad del Pacífico,

“Los bailarines ejecutan cuida-dosamente un complicado mane-jo de los pies mientras maniobran las olas que se forman a través de los olanes de la falda”.

Esta forma de comunicación artística a menudo se realiza en los festivales de arte, eventos cívicos y se caracteriza por sus elaborados y vibrantes trajes.

“Cuando mi madre hizo los vestidos para la región de Nayarit, le tomó más de veinte horas de coser para completar una falda que incluye olanes que juntos miden 35 metros”, dijo Becerra, en relación con los trajes de su presentación en el evento “Voces de Nuestros Antepasados” en la Universidad del Pacífico.

Para Becerra Folklórico ofrece la oportunidad de compartir, ce-lebrar y aprender sobre la cultura, sobre todo si uno no está familiari-zado con la historia y los orígenes del baile folklórico.

Pero no sólo son los bailarines sienten la pasión por la cultura de la Folklor mexicano.

Violeta Meza, residente de Stockton, asistió a la presentación de Becerra con los Danzantes de Pacific en la Universidad.

Sentada en la primera fila, Meza silbaba y cantaba las can-ciones del mariachi, mientras que le explicaba a su nieto de cuatro años, Gabriel Valdovinos, el signi-ficado de cada baile y el canto.

Meza es originaria de Jalisco, México, un estado que ella descri-be como la “La tierra del Mariachi y el Jarabe Tapatío”.

Ballet folkloriaco a broadly used term to describe all forms of Mexican folk dancing combines elements of the Mexican history, folklore and culture with rhythm and body movement.

Mexican folk dancing has been around for hundreds of years,” said Becerra a dancer with more than 20 years of experience is part of Los Danzantes de Pacific and is also a Spanish Professor at the University of The Pacific.

“Dancers carefully execute com-plicated footwork while maneuve-ring intricate waves through the gathered ruffles of their skirts.”

This artistic form of commu-nication often performed at art festivals and civic events is cha-racterized by its elaborate and vibrant attire.

“When my mother made the dresses for the region of Nayarit, it took her over twenty hours of sewing to complete one entire skirt, which included a gathered ruffle measuring 36 yards,” said Becerra , regarding the outfits of her last performance at the event Voices of our Ancestors at Univer-sity of the Pacific.

For Becerra Folklorico provides an opportunity to share, celebrate and learn about the culture, espe-

cially if one is unfamiliar with the history and origins of folklorico.

But not only are the dancers feel the passion for the culture of the Mexican Folkor.

Violeta Meza, a Stockton resi-dent, attended Becerra s perfor-mance at UOP, and sitting in the first row she whistled and sang along the popular mariachi songs while she explained to her four year old grandson, Gabriel Valdo-vinos, each dance and song.

Meza is from Jalisco, Mexico a state that she describes as the, “land of the Mariachi and the Jarabe Tapatio (The Mexican Hat Dance).”

Meza explains that kids in Mexico are taught to dance ballet folklorico and then perform at different festivals throughout the school year.

“Schools foster a taste for Mexi-can music and Mexican folk dan-cing,” said Meza.

As the attire, the dance topics also vary from region to region.

Becerra explains that the state of Jalisco is well known for its mariachis, colorful dresses with bright ribbons, sombreros, and charro outfits.

While the state of Veracruz is well known for its famous sones jarochos that are characterized by very complex footwork and accom-panied by string instruments from verse to verse.

Like people, plants need a healthy environment.

To reduce our chances of be-coming ill, we get plenty of fresh air and clean our homes to re-move bugs and bacteria. Yet we neglect our plants by leaving fruit, fallen leaves, weeds, dead branches, even dead plants in our gardens!

Fruit and fallen leaves are ideal locations for pests and diseases to harbor. Weeds and dense vegetation under trees and shrubs provide hiding places for pests and reduce airflow, increa-sing humidity and the likelihood of fungal diseases. Good sanita-tion is important for optimum plant health. Our summer fruit and vegetable crops are starting to dwindle. You may notice an abundance of fallen fruit and leaves under your trees. One question we often receive in our office is whether you should leave the fruit to compost or clean it up. Sanitation is necessary to prevent disease and pests and reduce the needs for sprays.

Often times fruit left on or around the tree will not rot com-pletely. These fruit will shrivel up into a small ball and are called mummies. Although they may look dry and harmless these mummies will produce fungal

What you can doHere are a few simple steps to

help reduce both the severity of infections and continuing infes-tation by pests and diseases.

• Remove damaged and disea-sed branches.

• Prune plants for better air circulation. For dense plants or plants with persistent fo-liar fungal diseases, winter is a good time to do some thinning.

• Keep areas under trees clean. Keep the stem free of piled mulch, weeds or other com-peting plants. Keep weeds and grass cut short under the tree canopy.

• Remove dead plants as soon as possible. A dead plant provides a home for insects that may spread diseases to other plants.

• Rake leaves after they drop and before the first rains arrive. Because of the high

rate of infection in leaves of fruit trees, ornamental cherries, ornamental plums and dogwoods, we do not recommend composting the-se leaves. Put them in yard waste bins for pickup. The leaves of most other plants make good additions to your compost.

Fruit trees Several additional steps are necessary to reduce disease and pest problems in fruit trees.• Remove diseased flowers that

remain on the tree after fruit set.

• Remove early fallen fruit and thin remaining fruit if neces-sary. Dispose of fruit.

Nacido de padres Puerto Ri-queños y criado en el área de la Bahía, Salsedo recibió su licen-ciatura de la Universidad Estatal de Nueva York (SUNY), Colegio Regents y su maestría en Jus-ticia Criminal en la Universidad de Boston.

Como el nuevo Comandante de la Oficina Salsedo ahora super-visara a los técnicos de pruebas, investigación de antecedentes, los Servicios de Animales, revisiones de procedimiento, reportes del personal y revisiones administra-tivas entre otras funciones.

En el transcurso de los últimos veinte años Salsedo ha ocupado varios puestos dentro del depar-tamento desde oficial de policía, investigador de Asuntos Internos, Sargento, Teniente y el Capitán.

“Mi primer amor, mi mayor meta era convertirme en un de-tective de homicidios... y puede desempeñar ese trabajo, mucho antes en mi carrera”

La posición de Investigador de robos y homicidios se le fue asignada a Salsedo en 1994 y hasta 1999.

“Echo de menos el de trabajar en los casos”, dijo Salsedo.

“Hay gran sentido de satisfac-ción para muchos oficiales de po-licía o al menos para mí, cuando se puede trabajar un caso hasta su clausura, uno busca quién es el sospechoso, se hace un caso y se logra hacer un arresto y eso es lo que echo de menos”.

Como en muchas otras carre-ras uno de los principales retos para los policías es el encontrar el equilibrio entre las demandas en el trabajo y la vida en el hogar.

“Para mí la familia es muy importante,” nos cuenta Salsedo quien ha estado casado por más de 22 años y tiene dos hijos,” ser el tipo de padre y esposo que quiero ser, y estar comprometido al trabajo y ser capaz de dar el 100 por ciento es difícil”.

Sin embargo, el equilibrio

“I’m excited to serve in the new role,” said Salsedo from his new office which he is still de-corating. “ I’m humbled because when I look at all the other all my peers, my group of commanders, Lieutenant and the Captain, I truly believe that any of them will be very efficient in this role, I feel very bless to have an oppor-tunity. ”

Born in a Puerto Rican Family and raised in the Bay area, Salse-do received his Bachelors degree from the State University of New York (SUNY) Regents College and his Master of Criminal Justice de-gree from Boston University.

As the new Bureau Comman-der Salsedo will now oversee the dispatchers, evidence technicians, background investigation, ani-mal services, procedure reviews, administrative review and staff reports among other duties.

Over the course of the last twenty years Salsedo held many different positions within the de-partment from a police officer to Internal Affairs investigator, Ser-geant to Lieutenant and Captain.

“My first love, my biggest goal was to become a homicide detec-tive… and I was able to do that job way early in my career.” The position of Robbery/Homicide investigator was assigned to him from 1994 through 1999. “I do miss being able to work in cases,” said Salsedo.

“There is a strong sense of sa-tisfaction for many police officers or at least for me, when you can work a case all the way through to conclusion, you developed who the suspect is , you put a case together and are able to make an arrest and I miss that”

As in many other careers one of the main challenges for police officers is the balance between the demands at work and the home life.

“To me family is really impor-tant,” said Salsedo, who has been married for 22 years, “being the kind of father and husband that I want to be but still being commit-ted to work and being able to give 100 percent is difficult.”

But the balance between home and work is not the only challenge

for the officers at the Stockton police department.

The budget has affected both the Fire and Police departments, forced the Police Department to layoff officers and restructure contracts to reduce salary and benefits.

“It is disappointing and con-cerning because we are going the wrong direction for the kind of stuffing that the city needs.”

According to Salsedo in 2006 there was a study done by an inde-pendent party where it shows that a city of the size and crime issues of Stockton should have about 500 to 650 active police officers.

“Based on the reported our numbers were boosted to get us to 420 police officers, now we gotten completely the opposite direction and because of the budget now we are at 319 plus officers for the whole city”

Salsedo explains that with fewer officers in the Department, “only the big crimes are getting addressed because we do not have enough cops to put in detectives to follow up in all the crimes that we should be looking at,”

POR FAVORSi muchos no lo han notado,

las noticias están llenas de política es son negativas de cualquier lado. Esto es lo nor-mal del negocio para muchos políticos que no pueden esperar para inscribirse para estar en los noticieros. Y para algunos que ya están en puestos elegidos durante tiempo, es tiempo para que empiecen a pensar que van a hacer si no son elegidos. Aquí es cuando se pone difícil en la polí-tica. Ellos necesitan encontrar la forma de generar interés, para iniciar la recaudación de fondos para la próxima competencia política. Al hacerlo, ellos casi venden su alma para logar ser elegidos, y los que tienen dinero lo saben. Ellos ahora empiezan a recaudar fondos para los que se re postulan para la próxima elección porque ellos saben que están desesperados. El problema inicia cuando estos negociantes de dinero o cabil-deros, como unos se nombran, empiezan a rodearlos. Por un lado, estos grupos apoyaran a un nuevo candidato para los pues-tos que anteriormente habían apoyado. Si es una competencia de ratas y la gente común esta-mos en medio. No solo tenemos que escuchar toda la bulla de debates, convenciones y otras formas públicas, pero si usted está afiliado a alguna unión usted está contribuyendo a esos candidatos que a la mejor usted no les dará su voto.

En el mecanismo de nuestro proceso de elecciones se posicio-na una fracción de la población contra la otra pero, ¿para qué? Bueno para entusiasmarlos para que voten por las personas que lo harán algo para usted, ¡ahueque solo lo piensen! Cuando todo termine tendremos el mismo tipo de gente en los puestos políticos, y ellos se les llama, SI GENTE hacen cosas para su partido no para usted. Muchos piensan que su voto cuentas y si cuenta solo si su voto logra

In case many of you haven’t noticed, the news is full of poli-tics and it is negative on one side or the other. This is just business as usual for many politicians who just can’t wait to get their paper work done so that they may be in the news. And for some who have been in office for quite some time, it’s a time to start thinking about what they will do if they are not elected. This is where things get tricky in politics. They need to find a way to generate interest, so that they can start raising more money for the next race. In doing so, they almost sell their souls to get elected, and the money brokers know it. Now they start to work on the incumbents to help them raise money for the next race because they know the incumbents are desperate. This is where the trouble starts when these money brokers or lobb-yists, as some are called, start to hit on the incumbents. On the other side, some of those same lobbyists will work to get new candidates elected for the same seats that they lobbied for an incumbent. Yes it is a rat race and we the people are in the middle of it. Not only do we have to watch all the hullabaloo of debates, conventions and other public forms, but if you are a Union member you are contributing to those candidates you won’t even

vote for. The nuts and bolts of our elec-

tion process is to get one fraction of our society to go against the other for” WHAT”? Well to get you hyped up to vote for the persons who will do things for you, so you think! When it’s all over we still have the same ty-pes of people in office, and they are called YES PEOPLE who do things for the party and not for you. Many may think your vote counts and it does only if your vote reaches a certain segment of the political machine that gets things done for that party, more so than the people. We need to really start getting big money out of politics so that equal re-presentation happens in the po-litical process. So the next time you listen to the news or watch a debate, listen carefully to what is said by both parties on the issues. If the debates were debates, we would have both parties ride in Limousines and battle it out in private, away from the media hype. You can draw your own conclusions on the issues, but just remember, when was the last time you personally heard from your representatives on any issue that you need answers?

Remember we are still a year away from the election. Until then, no politics please.

Me entere de la muerte del Gaspar Henaine mejor conocido en el mundo artístico como “Capu-lina”; un hombre que se distinguió por sus ingenio y sus chistes. El hacia reír a su público sin llegar a la vulgaridad.

De ahí el que se ganara el mote de Capulina “el rey del humorismo blanco” Henaine participó en casi 100 películas y se destacó en el entretenimien-to mexicano formando un dueto a principios de la década de los 50s con Marco Antonio Campos Contreras, conocido como “Viruta” , con quien inició una prolífica carrera en la radio alcanzando grandes éxitos en el celuloide con más de una veintena de filmes.

Tras una ruptura profesional con Viruta, He-naine comenzó su carrera, haciendo películas de comedia dirigidas en su mayoría a los niños. La cual seria una pena no mencionar que los sketches que hiciera famosos a la seria de “cómicos y can-ciones” fue escrito por otro de los grandes cómicos como es Roberto Gomes Bolaños mejor conocido como Chispirito.

En tanto que dios le dé el descanso eterno a Capulina quien nació en Chignahuapan, Puebla, el 6 de enero de 1926, hijo de un inmigrante libanés. Nuestro mas sincero pésame a sus hijos, sus nie-tos y su viuda que por cierto las últimas palabras de Capulina fue “quiero despedirme de mi vieja” ¡Descanse en paz!

I recently learned of the death of Gaspar Henai-ne better known along the artistic world as “Ca-pulina” [Famous Mexican big screen comedian]; a man with a distinct ingenuity in its jokes. He knew how to make his audience laugh without being vulgar.

Capulina a personality who well deserve the title, “the king of clean humor,” Henaine parti-cipated in almost 100 movies and he became an outstanding Mexican entertainer as he partici-pated in a duo, during the early 50s with Marco Antonio Campos Contreras, known as “Viruta,” with whom he formed a productive career in the radio reaching great success socially with more than 20 movies.

His carrier started following his separation from Viruta, Henaine started his carreer making comedy movies with a young target audience. Unfortunately, this space is limited to highlight Henaine’s professional artistic career. Which it would be a shame if I was not to credit the writer of the scripts and songs another great comedian Roberto Gomes Bolaños [Mexican script and comedian actor] better known for his character Chispirito.

May God give eternal peace to Capulina who was born in Chignahuapan, Puebla, on January 6, 1926; he was the son of Lebanese Migrants. We give our condolences to his children, his great grand children and his widowed wife. For whom he said his last words, “I want to say good bye to my lady,” Rest in peace!

Support for a protesting momentum based on the “Occupy Wallstreet” initiative has grown into a nationwide protest. Sprouting other protests such as Occupy San Francisco, and Occupy Sacramento in California. The message they are sending is simple, “We are the 99%.” You Tube and Facebook posts include statements toward the banks, wallstreet and corporations. Protesters are asking that the top tier 1% should be taxed so that the wealth could be spread among the 99% for social services such as edu-cation, roads, jobs and much more. In Stockton, there is a peaceful protest scheduled at DiCarli Square across the street from the downtown movie theatre, and across the street from Bank of America- on Wednesday October 12, 2011 at 7:00 AM. The community is expected to come out in support bringing people in the labor sector, college students, homeless, educators, firefighters, those who have lost their homes, the unemployed, laid off, and more.

El apoyo para el movimiento de protesta una iniciativa titulada “Occupy Wallstreet” [Ocupando Wallstreet] a crecido a una protesta a nivel nación. Han iniciado otras protestas como el caso de Occu-py San Francisco, y ocupando Sacramento en Cali-fornia. El mensaje que lanzan es sencillo, “somos el 99%,” Notas en You Tube y Facebook le mandan un mensaje a los bancos, Wallstreet y otras corporacio-nes. Personas protestando peticionan que el 1% de personas deberían pagar impuestos para distribuir sus riquezas en servicios sociales para que el 99% pueda recibir servicios como educación, caminos, empleos, y mucho más. Governor Brown signed Senate Bill 244 into law on October 7, 2011. “Clean drinking water is a basic human right,” said Governor Brown in a statement released by his office. “The bills I have signed today will help ensure that every Californian has access to clean and safe sources of water. Protecting the water we drink is an ab-solutely crucial duty of state government.” Senate Bill 244 would ensure that cities and counties review and update the elements of their general plans to include data and analysis, goals, and implementation measures regarding unincorpo-rated island, fringe, or legacy communities. This requirement would apply the next time that local officials revise their general plans.

El Consulado General de México en Sacramento participa la realización de la XI edición de la Semana Binacional de Salud (SBS), del 1 al 16 de Octubre, en al menos 40 estados de la Unión Americana y 3 pro-vincias en Canadá, con la participación de las redes consulares de México, Guatemala, Bolivia, Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador y Perú.

Agencias gubernamentales federales y estatales, organizaciones comunitarias, y miles de voluntarios se reúnen anualmente para ayudar a mejorar la salud y bienestar de la población latina marginada. La SBS es una de las mayores movilizaciones de esfuerzos destinados a mejorar el acceso a la salud de las comu-nidades vulnerables. Tanto en EUA como en Canadá se ofrecerán talleres de educación sobre salud y atención médica en ciudades y pueblos, y se celebrarán ferias de salud en las que se ofrecerán exámenes médicos y otros servicios de salud básicos, así como información sobre seguros médicos y educación sobre salud.

Este año se realizan 5 campañas nacionales para concientizar a la comunidad latina marginada: Acce-so a los servicios médicos; Salud de la Mujer (cáncer cervical y de mama, y embarazo de adolescentes); Enfermedades infecciosas (VIH/SIDA y tuberculosis); Enfermedades crónicas (obesidad, diabetes, enferme-dades renales e hipertensión); y Salud mental (abuso de sustancias y violencia doméstica). Los objetivos de las campañas son promover la prevención, así como acciones y medidas a tomar de acuerdo con cada uno de los temas.

The Consulate General of Mexico in Sacramen-to is pleased to announce the XI edition of the Binational Health Week (BHW), from October 1st to16th, in 40 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces, with the participation of the consular networks from Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia, Hon-duras, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

Federal and state government agencies, com-munity-based organizations, and thousands of volunteers have come together annually to help improve the health and well-being of the under-served Latino population. To date, the BHW is one of the largest mobilization efforts in the nation aimed to improve the health access of vulnerable communities. Outreach and education workshops, health fairs, lab tests, insurance referrals, medical screenings, and other essential health services will be delivered in cities and towns in the U.S. and Canada.

This year, five national campaigns are being implemented to promote awareness among the underserved Latino community: Access to Health Care Services; Women’s Health (Cervical, Breast Cancer and Teen Pregnancy); Infectious Diseases (HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis); Chronic Diseases (Obesity, Diabetes, Kidney Disease and Hyper-tension); and Mental Health (Substance

Abuse and Domestic Violence). The campaigns’ objectives are to promote awareness, prevention and response action regarding each issue.

Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater.Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.Replace or repair damaged or loose electrical cords.If you smoke, smoke outside, and use deep, wide ashtrays on a sturdy table.Blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Avoid the use of candles in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep.
