Hardly a week has passed since Limpopo Police Commissioner Lt Gen Fannie Masemola promised the family of the slain policeman, W/O Thomas Mabada, and the people of Limpopo that the police would leave no stone unturned in the hunt of the killers.

The 52-year-old warrant offi cer from Tshivhilidulu outside Thohoyandou, who was attached to the Siloam police, was killed in an ambush while chasing armed robbers from Siloam towards the Thohoyandou area at Lwamondo a fortnight ago.

The police made a major breakthrough last week when they arrested three suspects, two of whom were positively linked to the murder of the dedicated policeman.

One of the suspects could not be linked to the murder, but he has been connected to other cases allegedly com-mitted with the other two.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto, the suspects were arrested by a team of detectives

and crime intelligence members who were investigating cases of business robberies in the Mogwadi area. “They followed up on information and traced the suspects to the Thohoyandou area last Wednesday evening. The suspects attempted to run away, but they were traced down and ar-rested. Further investigations already link the suspects to house robberies, business robberies and vehicle hijacking in the greater Thohoyandou area,” she said.

Otto further indicated that intensive investigation by the detective team then linked two of the arrested to the murder of the policeman. Three suspects, Norman Mnisi (33), Thivhileli Hlungwane (23) and Dakalo Makhavhu, fi rst appeared in the Mphephu Magistrate’s Court on Friday on a separate charge of attempted murder of another police offi cer and vehicle hijacking. Norman Mnisi and Thivhileli Hlungwane later appeared in the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murdering W/O Mabada. Makhavhu could not be linked to the murder of the police offi cer.

The case against Thivhileli Hlungwane and Norman

Mnisi was postponed to 13 November (today) for a formal bail application.

During the funeral service of Mabada, Lt Gen Masem-ola hailed the team that worked around the clock to nail the killers. “As we said, we would not leave any stone unturned in tracking down the killers and other criminals. We are happy that three of the most wanted are now behind bars, but there are still some outstanding and we are making an appeal to the community to expose them. These criminals we arrested stayed at houses and people accepted blood money. Please let us expose them and that we make this community free of crime,” said Masemola.

The arrest and subsequent appearance in court of the al-leged killers of Mabada came as good news to the family.

“The speed with which the police managed to hunt down and arrest the killers gives us hope as a family. The killing caused a lot of pain in the family, but we are comforted by the way the police are handling this case. The arrest will also ease the pain we have as a family,” said Zakes Mabada, a family member.

HIV infections on the increase in Vhembe area“The rate of HIV infections on the farms in Vhembe is on the increase. Our people need to be told that AIDS is everywhere. We all need to work together to prevent AIDS-related deaths,” said the managing director of Munna Ndinnyi,

Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini. He was one of the speakers during an awareness

campaign at Matsila farm a fortnight ago.Mufunwaini said the campaign was a continua-

tion of the wellness campaign that the organisation had launched. “Our institution has a mandate to dispense the best service to the community and we will only achieve that through healthy and sound employees,” he said. He added that employees needed to know their status, and those infected should get the necessary support.

According to him, it was a historic campaign, with large numbers of people attending the event. “There is no use in keeping quiet while our people are dying of AIDS on a daily basis. The disease is

no longer a secret and everyone should speak openly about it. How many more must die before our people real-ize that the pandemic is mercilessly wiping out our people? There is a need to tell our com-munity members to be more careful about the disease because, once the virus affects you, there is no cure.”

Chief Livhuwani Matsila spoke openly about the dangers of the disease and empha-sised the importance of education as a move to instil a sense of re-sponsibility among the communities. He said that it was high time that employees took charge of their lives. “The only way of taking control of one's life is by knowing your HIV status. It is the correct start to ap-ply for voluntarily HIV testing,” he added.

Photographed during the event are, in the first row standing from left, Cllr. Matodzi Netshifhefhe, Deputy Minister Thokozile Xasa, Mayor Grace Mahosi, Minister Ngoako Ramatlodi and businessman Mike Nkuna. At the back are Thulamela Municipality councillors and other dignitaries who attended the event.

P r o p e r t y m o g u l M i k e Masingita Nkuna, who has built malls in different parts of South Africa, says he is no lon-ger working for himself and his family but is now working to uplift his community.

Nkuna officially launched his newest development, Malamu-lele Crossing, a fortnight ago. This will be a mall project that occupies 14 000 square metres and is expected to yield 600 permanent jobs.

He said that he was now focusing on bringing major development projects in rural areas and that other malls were coming to the Greater Giyani Municipality, Makhado Mu-nicipality as well as the new municipality in Vhembe that covers some parts of Vuwani and Malamulele.

This former panelbeater says that he has achieved his dreams of having money, but now he thinks of creating jobs for rural people, so that they are

able to drive the wolves from their doors. “When someone is from the village of Xitlhelani in Malamulele and grew up herding cattle, even if one ends up being successful, it is not easy to forget where you come from,” he said.

He was motivated to pursue property development after admiring two famous South Africans, the late Soweto civic leader Ephraim “Mshengu” Tshabalala and another tycoon, Richard Maponya. Mshengu is that civic leader who once had the desire to buy the whole Soweto. “Some people die be-fore they realise their dreams, but I am lucky that I realised mine. My concern is that, after realising my dreams, I must now change the lives of other people," he said.

The Deputy Minister offor Tourism, Ms Tokozile Xasa, hailed Nkuna for initiating mas-sive developments in the rural areas. “The last time I came it

was all smoke and fire as you were demanding a municipality, but now I see happy faces and there is no sign of smoke,” said Xasa, who urged the community to look after people's property.

Businessman Joe Mathebula, who attended the event yester-day, said he was happy with what Nkuna was doing for rural communities.

Dr Jan Nkuna, brother of Mr Mike Nkuna, hailed his brother for not forgetting the rural com-munities where he came from. He referred to annual donations he makes to rural communities each December, where Nkuna donates food parcels to the des-titute and the vulnerable.

Local civic leader in Malam-ulele Brian Maluleke said that it was commendable "when one of our own decides to invest at home and provide jobs to his people and that will also assist in developing the new munici-pality.”

The Deputy Minister of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr John Jeffery, and Cllr Lucy Mulaudzi were photographed immediately after the unveiling of the plaque of the Tiyani Small Claims Court on Friday.

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development launched a small-claims court in Tiyani last Friday as a way of taking judicial services to the people.

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitution-al Development, Mr John Jeffery, said that the de-partment had realised that people often did not have

the time or the money to travel long distances to courts. “That’s why we are bringing the courts closer to our people and making sure that the poor can also make use of legal and justice ser-vices,” he said.”An ac-cessible justice system must be inexpensive, easy to understand and deliver results speedily. This is exactly what our small claims courts do.”

He said that there were currently 365

small claims courts in the country, 36 of which were in Limpopo. These courts are used to settle minor civil disputes and claims between parties in an informal manner. “The highest amount for which an individual dispute can be settled is up to R15 000,” he said. “If the amount under dispute is more than R15 000, the person claiming can lessen the claim to R15 000.”

He stated that any person could come to the small claims court. “It is free of charge, all one has to pay are the sheriff’s fees and one does not need a lawyer,” he said.

The Tiyani Magistrates’ Court was previously a branch of the Giyani Magistrates’ Court. When a new Hlanganani Court was built, it became a branch of Hlanganani Magistrates’ Court, until it was proclaimed a district court in July 2009.

Tiyani Magistrates’ Court has no regional court, but the court provides civil, maintenance, children’s court, criminal court and small claims court services.

The total number of people served by this court for the villages within its jurisdiction is more than 185,000.

In custody: Simon Rasta Moyo.

The residents of Madombidzha village were left shocked in the wake of a murder where a Zim-babwean man was stabbed to death in the street.

It is alleged that the two men who originally came from Zimbabwe were walking in the street at around 19:00 a fortnight ago. They were apparently approached by two other men, whereafter one of them was attacked and stabbed with a screwdriver.

According to the spokesperson for the Tshil-wavhusiku police, Sgt Thilivhali Maloa, the police were alerted to the incident and responded quickly.

“We found a male victim lying dead on the ground at a certain street,” she said. “He had been stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver by known suspects. He sustained severe injuries which could possibly have led to his death.”

She indicated that the deceased was later identi-fied as Samuel Tapfumana Makumbe.

The police’s investigations led to the arrest of the first suspect, Simon Rasta Moyo (20). Moyo was charged with murder and had since appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate's Court on 2 November, where his case was postponed to today (13 November). The second suspect is still at large.

The chairperson for the Zimbabwean community in Limpopo, Mr Gift Eglone, had expressed his disappointment with the people who opted to fight and end up committing murders when there were differences between them.

“They should make an effort to contact us if they have any challenges,” he said. “We will see and put to scale the matter and, if their problems need the police's intervention, we will refer it to the police. As the Zimbabwean community we want to put the point forward that we work hand in glove with the police and other departments or structures, which promotes peace, safety and security here in South Africa and everywhere on the continent. When we look we might find out that they killed each other over nothing – I mean a small matter which could have been resolved.”

Vhamusanda Vho-Ntsundeni Sinthumule said that he was appalled by the incident where a for-eigner killed his own countryman in a foreign land. “This is so disturbing because it all comes down on our shoulders as community leaders, and this gives

Another killing shocks Madombidzhaus a bad name – that we are killing one another,” he said. “We had experienced similar cases in the past, where foreigners killed each other. However, it had all stopped after we had made a public an-nouncement where we instructed all our traditional leaders to document all foreigners for influx control and crime-prevention purposes.”

Vho-Sinthumule said that a public announce-ment would be made for all foreigners to be registered or documented at the local traditional leaders' offices.

Eglone can be contacted at 071 083 0867.

Louis Trichardt residents, together with members of the South African National Defence Force and military veterans from the Bush War (1966 – 1989) took a moment to

remember the sacrifices made by war veterans in service of their country as part of Re-membrance Day.

At 05:00 on Monday, 11 No-vember, 1918, an armistice was

signed by Germany and the alli-ance nations, ending hostilities during the First World War (1914 – 1918). At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of that year, the guns fell silent. The war

In remembering those who died in the war and subsequent wars, Remembrance Day is commem-orated annually. The Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTHs) of Louis Trichardt held their service this past Sunday at their Turbi Hills Shellhole. As part of the ceremony, two minutes of silence was observed to remember those who paid the ultimate price for their country.

Following this moment of silence, soldiers and military personnel laid wreaths at the Turbi Hills’ remembrance wall, while members of the Air Force Base Makhado formed an honorary guard.

The Turbi Hills Shellhole was named after the place where the first South African was killed in North Africa during the Second World War. Tim Kleinenberg was killed on January 25, 1941, when he was shot by a German sniper. He also hailed from Louis Trichardt.

It is worth mentioning that the Turbi Hills Shell-hole has some of the largest private military mem-orabilia to be held at a South African shellhole. A private viewing can be organised by phoning their Old Bill Alan Odendaal at 083 660 2472.

Opinion

“Women abuse will never build SA”Any form of violence against women and chil-dren is not part of our nation building. South Africa’s nation building seeks to promote a non-sexist, non-racial, united, democratic and prosperous society without any hidden agenda.

Today, the biggest threat to our society is violence against women and children, hence our popular slogan: “No violence against women and children!”

As a country, we need a socially cohesive so-ciety where violence against women and children will be out of fashion; where people will speak out in one voice against abuse towards women and children; where people will fight any form of exclusion or marginalisation of women.

We need a society where all of us, irrespective of our gender, will feel the sense of belonging in our rainbow nation. Even the National Develop-ment Plan (NDP) is clear that violent means are not acceptable in our democratic country.

Remember, the NDP envisions that by 2030, all of us who will be living in this peaceful country must feel safe and have no fear of crime; that we should feel safe at our respective homes, schools, work place and enjoy an active community life free of fear.

The NDP is clear that, in the next 15 years, we need a socially cohesive society where women can walk freely in the street, while our children can play safely outside without fear.

We must always remember that becoming a socially cohesive society where both women and children will no longer be violated starts with the reporting of all forms of abuse against the vulner-able people in our society to the police.

In a well-oiled democratic state like ours, with an independent and effective justice system, there is no need for so-called mob justice.

In this government, we have the police service which is a well-resourced, professional institution staffed by highly skilled officers who value their work and are committed to serving the commu-nity. Our men and women in blue are prepared to safeguard our lives and property without discrim-ination, protect the peaceful against violence, and respect the rights of all to equality and justice.

As long as all of us can understand that nation building is not a task of the government alone, we can only build a cohesive society that shares a common identity; that we need to double our ef-forts to eradicate this scourge in our communities.

As South Africans, we need to show the world like we did during the dawn of our democracy that gender-based, violent crimes don’t build nations. We are known as people who flourish in terms of finding solutions to our challenges through robust dialogue as a way of reaching out to one another.

My fellow South Africans, we know that it is not easy, but we have no choice, as we need to build one national identity out of multiple identities based on class, gender, age, language, geographic location, and religion.

We don’t need divisions anymore, we need a society with a value system that is based on Ubuntu, a society which promotes caring for and respecting others, and one way of achieving this is

to refrain from all forms of abuse against women and children.

With the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children around the corner, as a nation, let us intensify our efforts of no violence against women and children through encouraging every member of our society to understand that violence against women and children is NOT a government or criminal justice system problem, but a societal problem that needs all of us to work together.

The campaign takes place every year from 25 November to 10 December. South Africa adopted the campaign in 1998 as one of the intervention strategies towards creating a society free of vi-olence. The campaign continues to raise aware-ness amongst South Africans about the negative impact of violence against women and children on all members of the community.

As government, we are challenging all silent gender-based crime victims to talk about painful experiences, so that they can get help. We are also urging our children to be brave by reporting bullying to their parents, teachers, community structures or law-enforcement agencies.

Nation building will become a reality when all forms of abusive behaviour against women and children are totally eradicated in our society, so in true Madiba style, we say it is in our hands to stop violence against women and children.

Farewell to a dedicated policeman

Residents are invited to attend the collaborative Art in the Park art show of the La Mia Nuvoletta Art Studio and Kidz Art School.

The art exhibition will be held on Saturday, 28 November. On show will be more than 60 art pieces by local young art

students.The exhibition will be held

outdoors from 10:00 until 13:00 at 92 Douthwait Street and from 10:00 until 12:00 at 95 Douthwait Street. “Come and enjoy a family event, where you can see good art and buy boerewors rolls and ice-cream as well,” is the invitation

of the organisers. The organisers asked residents to take note that the event will not take place if there is rainy weather on the exhibition days.

For more information Mariza Joubert (078 153 7037) or Angela Versari (082 461 6676) can be contacted.

A huge crowd of people from all over the country gathered at Tshivhilidulu village outside Thohoyandou on Saturday, to give the slain W/O Thomas Mabada a befi tting send-off. He was accorded a full police funeral.

Among the dignitaries who

attended the funeral were Trans-port, Safety and Liaison MEC, Ms Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana, Limpopo police commissioner Lt Gen Fannie Masemola, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, the executive mayor of Vhembe, and Mayor Grace Mahosi of Thulamela. The event took place in a big tent at

the gate of the local cemetery.Mabada (52), of Tshivhilidulu,

who was attached to the Siloam Police Station, was killed while pursuing armed robbers from Si-loam towards the Thohoyandou area at Lwamondo.

Family spokesperson Zakes Mabada said his death had left

them with sore hearts and that they believed his burial would ease the pain the family was feeling.

“Thomas was a unifi -er and leader in the fam-ily, and we had hoped that, with his wisdom, he would lead us for many years, but death robbed us of this genius. His death left a void that will be hard to fi ll,” he said.

Limpopo CPF chair-person Mr Edward Ma-fune urged communities to work in conjunction with the police in the fi ght against crime. Lt Gen Masemola urged the police not to hesitate to defend themselves, their colleagues and the community. “We have given you the equip-ment and trained you how to use them. We cannot allow you to die with your guns and your magazines full of bullets,” he said.

MEC Mapula Moka-ba- Phukwana reiterated Pres Jacob Zuma’s call for the police to fight fi re with fi re when their lives and those of oth-ers are in danger, but within the bounds of the law. Mabada is the 73rd police casualty killed in the line of duty country-wide this year. He is the fi rst to be killed on duty in Limpopo and three others have been killed off duty in the province.

Gospel artist Albert Mudau released his much-awaited CD, Lord I just want to thank you, during the past month.

This is his eighth CD and Mudau said that it felt like the beginning of his music career as he had recorded his seventh in 2013. “This is my best ever album and that it is the reason why I dedicated it to the Lord, giving thanks for all He has done for me. The road thus far has not always been smooth, but the Lord helped me soldier on and on.”

Mudau said that he had taken such a long time to come out with a new album, because of the many commitments he had. “I am a teacher attached to the Gauteng Department of Education and I am also busy completing my Honours Degree in Education. I view education as the best tool that one should have and my advice to other musicians is that they should take their education as a priority and then their talents will be realised easily,” he said.

He further indicated that he would not have

achieved this much had it not been for the support he got from his wife Judith, whom he described as his pillar of strength. “She is everything to me. She assists in editing songs and also does the selection of the songs,” added Mudau.

Mudau’s new CD is available at local music shops or it can be ordered directly f rom him at 082 509 4259.

By Elmon TshikhudoThe launch of Jah Lady Dorris D’s DVD was an op-portunity to get together for many artists in Vhembe and Gauteng who honoured the event to support one of their own.

The launch was held at Cross Road House (Muromani) in Madombidzha village a fortnight ago. Speaking after the event, Jah Lady said that the launch was successful and added that it had also bolstered her music sales. “The launch has taken my reggae career to a higher level,” she said. “I have received massive support from my fan base and fellow artists. I am confi dent to announce that the artists here in Vhembe are one – we are united by the love of music and our zeal to take it to the people.”

Jah Lady had recorded a reggae album earlier this year, Ndi do mu gwadamela. According to people who had already bought and listened to the songs contained on the album, Jah Lady gives her all as she takes listeners to greener pastures with her velvety voice.

A fellow artist Tshidino Ndou said that he was impressed with the way Jah Lady had organised her launch. “Top art-ists came in numbers to support the launch,” he said. “Malondolo, Mashudu Nematoka, Zwido, Dzudzi, Cornerstone, Sikheli Junior, Chris Thiba and Nditsheni “Ndiche” Ramalamula were all there. Their performances left the crowd begging for more. Artists should continue supporting each other.”

Jah Lady said that the pressure had already started

pouring in from her fans, who all want her to release a new album. She promised to release it next year. She can be reached at

Apply now for mayoral bursariesThe deadline for applying for a bursary to assists poor learners in the Vhembe District is loom-ing and applicants are urged to submit their applications soon. Pupils only have time until 27 November.

Executive Mayor Tshitereke Matibe, who launched the fund, reminded scholars and tertia-ry-education students that the doors of learning are opened to all. “Education shall be free, compulsory, universal and equal for all children. Higher education and technical training shall be

opened to all by means of state allowances and scholarships awarded on the basis of merit. Adult illiteracy must be ended via a mass state education plan and teachers must have all the rights of other citizens,” said Matibe.

He said that the Vhembe Dis-trict Municipality’s executive mayor bursary fund and the municipality had set aside R3,5 million to assist students com-ing from disadvantaged family backgrounds. “Eligible learners should be residents of Vhembe District Municipality, learners

should show consistency in good performance while their parents must be unemployed or classifi ed as indigent. The pupils must be either in Grade 12 during this cur-rent fi nancial year or have passed their Grade 12,” added Matibe

Application forms are current-ly obtainable at Vhembe District Municipality’s help desk and are also available at the Musina, Makhado, Mutale and Thulamela Local Municipalities.

Children of municipal offi cials are not eligible to apply for this bursary fund.

Engen has launched the Gateway Truck Stop at Beit Bridge in response to customer requests for an on-road refuelling site, serving long-haul vehicles travelling to Musina and beyond into Africa. According to Mr Mike Stead, Engen Commercial Fuels Manager, the company plans to keep growing its network where there is suffi cient demand. The site at Beit Bridge was taken over by Engen on 1 September. After signifi cant upgrades, it now boasts new equipment and facilities, which demonstrate the company’s commitment to health, safety, the environment and quality standards. “Like all Engen Truck Stops, this new site provides safe and secure facilities for long-haul drivers,” says Stead. “Drivers can have a bite, refuel and use the rest areas, which offer ablution facilities, showers, and security fencing with controlled access. A wellness clinic is also operating daily. Good driver health has a massive impact on the lives of drivers and their families, in terms of reduced exposure to diseases and longevity of a breadwinner,” adds Tasneem Sulaiman-Bray, Engen General Manager: Corporate Affairs. As part of the launch of Gateway Truck Stop, Engen will also be holding Driver Wellness events, offering free health screenings for drivers. Rewards for Eltivillas’ best pupilsSeveral outstanding pupils from different grades at Elti-vilas Primary School received certificates and trophies in recognition of their achieve-ments in academics and ex-tramural activities during an event at the school last Friday.

The principal of the school, Mr Johan Fick, said it had be-come important for the school to have such a special day at the school before learners started with their end-of-year examinations. “Our learners are failing and not because they do

not know what they are writing about, but because they are not prepared for the examinations. Let us prepare them in advance,” he said.

He said learners had to make informed decisions if they dreamed of making it success-fully in life. He said the decision to make it in life lay with the individual learner.

“You either choose to make it or fail in life, but whatever unwise decision you make, will come back to haunt you later in life,” she said.

Fick also encouraged the youth to pray for whatever they want in life.

“Today’s youth is known to forget and to look down upon the power of prayer. Let us change all that and start believing that, with hard work and God, everything is possi-ble,” he said. He concluded by encouraging all learners to use their time profi tably. “There is time for everything; allocate more time to your school work and you will get the best results at the end of the year,” he said.

The top pupils in astroquiz are Tshegofatso Ngwato, Livhuwani Mahada, Faith Muthelo and Ndzalamo Baloyi. With them in the photograph is Mr Takalani Siphuma, their teacher.

The Phala Phala FM reggae music presenter, Tshililo Donald “Bingi Ras” Khanari, ventured into radio in 2005 at Univen Radio, where he started off as a newsreader and fi eld reporter.

He became the presenter of the Current Matters and Reggae Beat programmes and also had a short stint in the higher echelons of the station, serving as production manager for about a year.

He said that his stint at campus radio was an excellent experience. He was only appointed after his third audition at the station. “The fi rst one I qualifi ed for the second round, but didn’t attend because it was after hours and I had to catch a bus home. Later I failed to impress when I eventually attended a second audition. At the third one, I went for the kill and the door was opened for me.”

He was surely born not just a radio presenter/producer, but also a media man. A cameraman of note, Khanari also cut his teeth in writing as a contributing scribe for Univen’s Nendila in-house magazine, Thulamela newsletter, Rise and Shine and the Valley Messenger newspapers. “Writing is just something ingrained in me. Many a time I express my deep emotions through writing, so yes I was born a

scribe,” says the energetic produc-er.

In 2008 he joined the SABC as a presenter for SABC education’s development and learner support. In 2012, Khanari was roped in as a content producer for Tshiko, working with Rotenda as her producer.

About his work on Tshiko Khanari says: “We tackle things provocatively - anything that matters the most to Johnny in the street and to Zuma at the Union Buildings - from politics to eco-nomics, labour, sports, education and social life.”

As a presenter, Khanari is live between 12:00 and 14:00 on Sat-urday, and promises to give the listeners the best of reggae sounds in “Muzika wa Reggae”. About the music he says: “Reggae gives me the much-needed spiritual connection with the Creator of mankind, social consciousness and historical reawakening. One can never be whole without these aspects of life. I just hope am sailing at the same pace as my listeners because this is truly our journey together, more Fyah!”

He adds that he is a proud father and “very much taken by

a very special goddess of a lady.” Defi ning his dress code, Khanari says; “Casual wear is my style.

Labels matter less to me, I wear anything that covers my body, but still suits me well.”

“Elders important for community”

Water situation: “We must learn from our experience”

“Use water sparingly,” asks Provincial Government

The importance of the lives of the elderly in the Thulamela Munic-ipality came under the spotlight during a recent event to celebrate them. It took place at the Malamu-lele Stadium and was addressed by Thulamela Mayor Grace Mahosi.

She made a clarion call to residents of her municipality to look after el-derly people.

Hundreds of elderly people from different villages were ferried to the stadium by bus for the festivities, which included nutritious meals, traditional dances and motivational talks. In paying tribute to the elderly, Mahosi spoke of the important role the elderly played in making the country what it is today.

“Elderly people are the pillars of this nation. Some of us grew up in very poor families, but families that were led by the same illiterate elders managed to take their children to school and most of us are in respect-able positions today. We never go to sleep hungry because of their selfless sacrifices and for this we should reciprocate by doing good and respect-ing them,” she said.

Mahosi further indicated that many families were surviving because of the grants that were received by the elderly. “These peo-ple deserve to be looked af-ter and we must also teach them about their rights, so that they will know if they are abused or not,” added Mahosi.

She urged elderly people to be vigilant and not to

expose themselves to abuse by their relatives and to speak out if such in-stances occur. “The youth should re-spect the elderly, because the freedom being celebrated today is the result of their relentless struggles. Our elderly now have access to free health care, free basic electricity and government grants and they really deserve that,” said Mahosi.

Other stakeholders, including the police, also urged communities to protect the elderly against violence and other crimes perpetuated against them. Mr Daniel Mabasa (65) from Malamulele said the day was worth remebering. “As elderly people we tend to spend most of our time alone at home and one does not even know what is happening outside the walls of our homes. This is a good time to meet old friends and share life experiences. We are very happy and thankful for what the municiplaity has done for us. We just hope that they do it from time to time,” he said.

It is now in the public space that there were serious water supply issues in most areas of

Vhembe district last week but one. This development was ostensibly an upshot of

the dissatisfaction of water-supply staff within the district municipality over arrear benefits, the min-ute details of which remain murky to the general public. Ironically, the general public bore the brunt of the strike action in no small measure.

A municipality should operate on the mandate of the electorate. A pedestrian understanding of this mandate is service delivery. It bears noting that water is in important resource which in point of fact is a basic necessity in all households and sundry. It is almost unforgivable to deny residents this basic necessity for whatever reason.

This is not to underplay the significance of the

cause of the action by the water-sup-ply staff. The object of this trajectory is to bring into sharper focus the need to resolve differences before they spiral out of control, as was witnessed this past week. Failure to take steps to obviate developments like these timeously invariably gives rise to multi-pronged problems for the immediate and distant future.

First we inculcate an orientation that one must resort to unorthodox means to resolve problems. Secondly, we reinforce into the consciousness of the youth that strike action is the primary means to resolve issues that we feel strongly about.

Thirdly, we allow our immediate interests to cloud our judgement to the point that we take steps that are tantamount to cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face. Interpretation possibilities are multiple and varied. We may be able to control what we do now, to some extent, but we cannot, however we desire, control the impact of how we conducted ourselves a fortnight ago on our youth, who, by happenstance, are the embodiment of our future.

The strike is apparently over, and water slowly trickled back into the taps. We now need to learn from the experience. The only indicator that we have learnt from the experience will be collaboration aimed at avoiding a recurrence of this untenable situation. The municipality was set up by us, we voted politicians who provide oversight thereof into office.

We need to support them to sup-port us. It should be a symbiotic relationship. Problems should be resolved amicably between elections and peacefully during elections. It seems proper to commend the district municipality for displaying leadership in this difficult situation, and for up-dating, albeit somewhat belatedly, the community on developments.

The workers also need to be com-mended for contributing to the reso-lution of the problem. It is hoped that next time, if there will be a next time, and one hopes not, the municipality and its staff will work out problems even before the community gets wind of them.

All residents of Limpopo are being urged to heed all calls to use water sparingly, respect water restrictions and observe all guidelines to save water.

This comes after the provincial exec-utive council of the Limpopo govern-ment had taken a decision to declare the province a disaster area through national prescripts.

The spokesperson for the Limpopo government, Mr Phuthi Seloba, said a

thorough assessment of the drought situ-ation had found that all districts and local municipalities in Limpopo were facing the worst drought conditions recorded in years.

The declaration of the province as a disaster area will assist the government to unlock the necessary resources to assist the affected communities, he added.

“Currently, the Department of Agri-culture and Rural Development has set

aside R3 million to assist affected farmers through the provision of livestock feed. However, this amount does not cover other areas, such as human consumption. It is for this reason that the executive committee is unlocking other avenues, including the activation of the Drought Relief and Di-saster Management Act of 2002,” he said.

He said that the provincial treasury and Department of Water and Sanitation would provide further assessments.

The MEC for Education, Mr Ishmael Kgetjepe, has sent a strong warning to shebeen and tavern owners at their establishments not to continue using loud sound systems during the present exams. “We want to regulate the times that the shebeens and tavern owners must close their businesses, because we are serious about the education of our children. Education is a social responsibility and those dragging their feet in promoting better education should face the law,” said Kgetjepe. He spoke during the recent official opening of the National Education Collaboration Trust in the Vhembe region, which took place at the premises of of Christ Worship House outside Thohoyandou.

On Friday the Madodonga Primary School awarded certificates to pupils who had excelled at academic level and during reading competitions at the school. Pupils also had an opportunity to display some trophies which were awarded to them during the circuit, cluster and district competitions. R10 million for Mapungubwe Festival

The veteran, Bra Hugh Masekela, is scheduled to perfom at the festival.

Limpopo’s Department of Sport, Arts and Culture promised that this year’s Mapungub-we Festival will be bigger and better than ever before. The department allocated R10 million to the festival that will take place in Polokwane from December 4-12.

During the Mapungubwe Festival, the cultural heritage of South Africa is celebrated. It is used for the purpose of setting a stage for both the renowned and the upcoming artists through exhi-bitions, plays and dramas and it includes a gospel and jazz festival.

“We promote Mapungubwe as a renowned World Heritage Site in our province because of the rich history in this area,” said the MEC, Nandi Ndalane, in her keynote address. Ndalane encour-aged South Africans to attend the Mapungubwe Arts Festival and to come and experience the beauty of Limpopo. “Events like this festival positively contribute towards improving the economic growth of the region through tourism and job creation.”

Ndalane added that there will be traditional dances throughout the programme, together with

the art exhibitions that will involve artists from Zimbabwe and Mozambique. There will also be an open festival for up-and-coming local artists.

“Our main aim is not to make profit from this festival, but to market our province and show our talent. The money we are going to collect will help to reduce some of our expenditure. In total, we are going to have more than 60 artists who will perform and 44 of the 64 artists are from Limpopo,” said Ndalane. She said that local artists from Limpopo would make up 80% of the line-up of both the gospel and jazz festivals.

According to Ndalane, some of the artists who will perform at the festival are Oliver Mtukuzi, Hugh Masekela, Sipho Hotsticks Mabuza, Ray Phiri & Stimela, Colbert Mukwevho, Malondolo, PJ Powers, Thomas Chauke, Ringo Madlingozi, Joe Shirimane, DJ Rabs Vhafuwi, DJ Nganyani, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Worship House and many more.

Nedbank inter-regional matches roundupThe inter-regional matches for the Nedbank Cup KO competition were staged at the Makwarela Stadium last Sunday. Five teams from the five Safa Regions took part in the one-day event to determine a team that will play against the ABC Motsepe League’s overall winner.

The five teams that battled it out in the tournament are Tshakhuma Na Ndilani (Vhem-be), Jane Furse Highlanders (Sekhukhune), Tau Tau FC (Capricorn), Trou-blemakers FC (Wa-terberg) and Em-manuel Iron Break-ers from the Mopani Region.

Two teams, Em-manuel Iron Break-ers and Tau Tau FC, had to play in the preliminary round earlier in the day, so that only four teams would remain to play in the semi-fi-nal stage. No goal was seen during the regulation time and the winner was determined through penalty shoot-out. Tau Tau converted all their five chances, while Iron Breakers scored four. There was drama short-ly after the referee blew the final whis-

tle. The players and fans for Iron Breakers ganged up and approached the match officials angrily, accusing them of fa-vouritism. They argued that the referee shouldn’t have allowed a player of Tau Tau to retake the penalty after his first attempt went wide. On the other hand, the match officials justified their decision by indicating that the keeper had moved some steps forward before the penalty was taken.

The organizers had to inter-

vene to calm down the situation as the angry fans were baying for the match officials’ blood.

In the other semifinal , Tshakhuma Na Ndilani beat Jane Furse Highlanders 3-1. Godfrey Mudau scored a brace, while Junior Mashavhathakha scored the third with a header. Lawrence Motau scored the Highlanders’ solitary goal.

Tshakhuma Na Ndilani lost 0-2 to Tau Tau FC in the final. (See the match report else-where).

Mixed fortunes for TNN in Nedbank Cup gamesTshakhuma Na Ndilani (TNN) are still bat-tling to come to terms with what happened to them last Sunday. They were booted out of the Nedbank Cup 0-2 by Tau Tau FC from the Capricorn Region.

TNN beat Jane Furse Highlanders from Sekhu-khune Region 3-1 in the semifi nal earlier that day. Their game against Tau Tau was equally contested, but TNN squandered more scoring opportunities.

Realizing that their left fl ank was not as sharp as they needed him to be, TNN replaced their diminutive striker, Junior Mashavhathakha, with Desmond Netshiungani 14 minutes into the game. Godfrey Mudau, who scored a brace in their semi-fi nal game against Highlanders, could not live up to the fans’ expectations and the defence gave him no breathing space.

The visitors took the lead in the 24th minute. Their overlapping midfi elder, William Mokwalak-wala, forced his way through the defence of TNN and beat the keeper with a ground cutter. TNN effected another change to their starting line-up before the end of the fi rst half. They introduced Rolivhuwa Mukwevho at the expense of Rendani Mukomafhedzi in the 39th minute.

Tau Tau approached the last stanza aggressive-ly. Their centre forward, Frank Serubarube, was brought down within the box and the referee, Mr Eric Munyai, award a penalty against TNN. The keeper of TNN, Stane-ly Matamba, made his presence felt when he braved the shot and ex-ecuted a brilliant save.

Tau Tau were award-ed another penalty after the TNN keeper, Stane-ly Matamba, tackled Jan Moshishi illegally with-in the box. Matamba was warned with a card for his actions. Domi-nic Khuduwe converted from the white spot to make it 2-0. Jackson Mabena of Tau Tau was later given his marching orders, following a sec-ond bookable offence.

Tau Tau will play against the ABC Mo-tsepe overall winner on a date and at a venue still to be announced to determine the team that will represent Limpopo Province in the national last-32 stage of the com-petition.

Defenders the new champsGogobole Home Defenders were crowned as the champions of the off-season soccer tournament, when they beat Ravele Black Dragons 6-5 on penalties at Rav-ele on Sunday. The game ended in a goalless draw and the win-ner was determined via penalty shoot-out.

Dragons’ leading goal scorer, Marubini Maupa, missed a clear opportunity when he fumbled at the goal fi nish shortly after the start of the game. He received a neat pass from Mpho Ramakgolo within the box and shot wide with the strand-ed keeper already beaten. Maupa committed another blunder a little later when he failed to connect Azwindini Mungoni’s square pass.

Mulalo Lethole, Defenders’ centre back, was lucky to get away with a yellow card. He obstructed

Mpho Ramakgolo at the edge of the box in a one-on-one situation, denying Ramakgolo what could have been a goal. The referee did the unexpected when he fl ashed a yellow card at a time when every-one thought he would give Lethole his marching orders.

Defenders threatened to score for the fi rst time in the 40th min-ute. Fhatuwani Matshusa received a beautiful pass from his cap-tain, Fhedzisani Mualudzi, and unleashed aimlessly from close range. They replaced Ndivhuwo Sikhwivhilu with Tshishonga Tsh-ishonga early in the second half.

Mulalo Lethole of Defenders hit the woodwork in the 78th minute and the ball landed outside the fi eld of play for a goal kick. Azwindini Mungoni of Dragons was booked for a late tackle late in the game.

According to the chairperson of Productivity SA’s board, Mr Mthunzi Mdwaba, the national awards provide a platform to inspire a competitive and pro-ductive South Africa. He said that productivity improvement was considered the most effective way of ensuring ongoing com-petitiveness, economic growth and, consequently, more wealth for all.

Keynote speaker at the awards and acting general secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), Mr Bheki Ntshalintshali, said business, labour and government needed to work together to achieve a common goal in the work place.

Tshedza Concrete Art of Lim-popo won the trophy in the emerging sector. The company specialises in the manufacturing of unique quality paving and building bricks. “Our mission is not only to manufacture bricks, but also to uplift the poor rural youth while reducing poverty in local areas,” the company says on its website.

The affiliates of the Limpopo Stream of the ABC Motsepe League will play their fifth league matches this weekend.

It remains to be seen whether The Dolphins will continue from where they left off last weekend, when they beat Nkowankowa Barcelona 2-1 at the Nkowan-kowa Stadium. The Dolphins

will host Giyani Hotspurs at the Elderado Stadium in Polokwane.

Mighty FC will play in front of their home crowd. They will host Joe Maweja FC at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. Maweja’s defenders, Dakalo Ratshitanga and Mashudu Makhari, must double their efforts or else they will regret it.

Great North FC will travel to Giyani, where they will fight for league points with Bilika All Stars at the Giyani Stadi-um. The mood is good in the camp of Bilika after holding the defending champions, Magezi FC, to a goalless draw at the TT Cholo Stadium in Polokwane last weekend.

The match of the week will be between Gawula All Stars and Magezi FC at the Giyani Stadi-um. Gawula are still fresh from a 2-1 victory over Polokwane Academy. Magezi will be lucky if by chance they manage to hold Gawula to a draw, when taking into account that Gawula are still to drop points at home.

Polokwane Academy will be away to collect points against Mosesetjane All Stars at the Mahwelereng Stadium in Moko-pane. Mosesetjane All Stars are fast becoming the league’s milk cow as they are still to win a league match this season. They had played four matches to date.

Lephalale Young Killers will

meet A1 Terrors at the Bela Bela Stadium. Boyne Young Tigers will play against Bellevue Win-ners Park at the Nkowankowa Stadium.

The ABC Motsepe newcom-ers, Nkowankowa Barcelona, will host Polokwane United at the Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen.

Mr Kostadin Papic.

Black Leopards will be campaigning in the Absa Premiership Division come next season - that is if the words of the team’s new head coach, Mr Kostadin Papic, are anything to go by.

The Serbian national was unveiled as Lidoda Duvha’s new mentor last Friday. According to Papic his aim is to see the Thohoyandou side returning to the elite league at the end of this season. He reiter-ated the fact that he wanted to see Leopards gaining automatic promotion to the elite division when the league activities for the current season came to an end. He is not keen for the team to try their luck in the promotional play-offs like it was the case in the previous two seasons.

Papic admitted, however, that although gaining automatic promotion was still possible, it would not be easy for them, considering the position in which they found themselves now on the log. They are lying on the eighth spot on the log with 14 points accumulated from 11 outings - ten points behind the logleaders, Baroka FC.

He appealed to the team’s fans to stop panicking, saying the days of losing home matches are over. Three of the fi ve matches that Black Leopards had lost were home fi xtures. They lost 0-2 to Cape Town All Stars, 2-3 to Mbombela United and 0-1 to Highlands Park at home while their away defeats were against Amazulu and Santos. Although he was announced as the team’s head coach last Friday, Papic could not sit on the team’s technical bench when his team beat Vasco da Gama, as he was still to update his work permit.

Black Leopards’ next fi xture will be against Wit-bank Spurs, with whom they will fi ght for league points at the Puma Rugby Stadium in eMalahleni next Saturday, November 21.

Coach aims high

Baroka FC silence critics in Cape TownBaroka FC proved again that they are good travelers when they beat Milano United 1-0 at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Sunday.

The visitors from Polokwane came close to scor-ing in the 14th minute when Dineo Shaku’s volley hit the woodwork and bounced outside the fi eld of play for a goal kick. The hosts also threatened to score three minutes later, when Nassif Morris’s header brushed the crossbar.

After few attempts in the last half, Baroka fi nally found the goal that earned them three signifi cant points through Thabiso Kutumela in the 75th minute. The victory sees Baroka move to the top of the NFD log.

Black Leopards ended their four-match winless streak by beating Vasco da Gama 2-0 at the Tho-hoyandou Stadium on Saturday. It took Lidoda Duvha 19 minutes to open their account. After suffering four losses in a row, Black Leopards made a comeback and registered a 2-0 victory over Vasco da Gama in their NFD League match at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday.

The victory was a warm welcome to the team’s new head coach, Kostadin Papic, whose appointment came into effect last Friday.

Realizing that it was diffi cult for them to match the home side, Vasco tried to frustrate Leopards with their rough tackles. They did not get far with their wrongdoings as their marksman, Sibusiso

Mxoyaba, was booked for a late tackle on Themba Mabuyango in the 14th minute.

Black Leopards were the fi rst to effect change to their starting line-up. They re-placed Katlego Molomo with Mcdonald Ntshingila 25 minutes into the game. Ntshingila combined well with Kgabo Mashiane in the middle of the park.

Lidoda Duvha broke the deadlock in the 34th minute. Ruggert Nyundu headed home, following a square pass from Marks Munyai to bring the half-time score to 1-0.

Leopards’ left-footed midfi elder, Nda-mulelo Mungadi, was out of touch in the last half and he was replaced with Me-shack Maphangule nine minutes in. Leon-

ard Ntshangase, Leopards’ fast forward, was reprimanded with a card for ignoring the referee’s whistle. He kicked the ball long after the referee, Mr Siyabonga Bi-yela, had blown the whistle for an offside. Leopards’ keeper, Vincent Moto, denied Mbulelo Wambi what everyone thought was a sure goal.

Wambi unleashed a powerful half vol-ley from the edge of the box, but Moto braved the shot and palmed the ball away for a corner kick. Leopards increased the margin in the 78th minute when Leonard Ntshangase beat the keeper with a ground cutter. The game turned lukewarm in the remaining 15 minutes.
