That was the day Mr. Anil Prasad traded (excuse the pun) his usual job of heading up Citi’s 1500 strong Foriegn Exchange and Local Currency Markets team to teach some of our own Sixth Formers. He delivered a ‘secrets of trading’ masterclass that shone a light on the modern world of finance. Our students grilled him during the Q&A and asked searching questions which ranged from “what are the ethical considerations you have to ponder before you put on trades?” to “how were you able to predict that the sentiment in Japan was finally changing after a 20-year recession?”. At the end of the day he felt suitably impressed with our students that he gave Arif Uddin his business card. In all, the project was an overwhelming success. Being able to take students to a trading floor last week really galvanised their interest in all things finance and has catalysed their enthusiasm for learning. Such opportunities really do add value to our curriculum and enrich students profoundly, so I would like to thank all of those who contributed to make it happen. Boxing Huseyin Guney Arslan and Harry Little gained Boxing Tutor Award at ‘The Damelolla Taylor’ centre in South London. Thank you to Mr Abbot for organising and running the initiative. Huseyin and Harry both behaved with great maturity and represented the school very well. The course provides a vocational qualification, increases student’s confidence and uses boxing as a tool to support behaviour.

Year 8 have been completing their inter-form athletic competitions this month. The competitions were a great success with students showing support and encouragement for their peers. The

After a great 3-0 win against Bishop Challoner, where Silvio Biziki and George Bruno scored and assisted the goals, the U15 team finally conceded their undefeated run against Bridge Academy. Whilst we created several chances, hitting the crossbar and forcing some good saves, we couldn’t finish them and unfortunately this cost us the points. Joshua Lindsey scored the only BGA goal.

Basketball resultsOur 2nd basketball fixture of the season resulted in an emphatic win for our year 9 & 10 team. AK Mohammed led the team superbly, scoring 10 points whilst organising and encouraging his peers; an excellent team performance! Our year 7 & 8 team ended up playing an older group (year 9’) as Stepney Green’s U13 team could not attend. We performed extremely well, learning lots from team play and only just falling short of a result. Ismail Mustapha was our star performer. BGA Footballers get a tantalising taste of new languages

Students in the football teams experienced their first tasters of German and Brazilian Portuguese as part of their new languages and football project. There was a wonderful buzz as our footballers twisted their tongues around tricky newforeign sounds and impressed visitors and teachers with their abundant enthusiasm and phenomenal focus.

To add further excitement to the first session, Matthias Frickel, a journalist from Deutsche Welle, Germany‘s international broadcaster, filmed the session for a documentary he is making about language learning through football. All of our footballers were outstanding ambassadors and took on the new challenge with relish making us very proud. Matthias is looking forward to returning in the new year to track our enthusiastic linguists on their language learning journey, and to see who will make the team that get taken to Germany. As well as capturing our students‘ linguistic engagement and progress as part of the documentary, we will also continue to use the excellent Arsenal Double Club language learning resources and evaluation materials to measure the impact of the sessions on students‘ motivation and skills in both Languages and PE, as well as their awareness of themselves as global citizens.

Very soon, students will be linked to a school in Germany who they will invite to a take part in a 'World Cup Challenge', racing to learn 1000 words of Brazilian Portuguese in time for World Cup kick off.

If you would like to get involved and learn Portuguese or German along with our students, please do join us at 3.30 in the Sports Hall on a Thursday. It is always wonderful for students to see adults learning too, and to be able to potentially compete with their teachers or see them out of their classroom comfort zone!
