Meet Peneda-Gerês National Park,
Portugal - PAN Parks since 2008
In the North of Portugal, in the transition zone between the Mediter-ranean and the Euro-Siberian regions, remnants of wildlife that once roamed all Europe have survived next to the vestiges of long lost civilizations.
Home for the wild ones: Peneda-Gerês National Park is the refuge of some of Europe’s last surviving great predators. Wild boars, otters, roe deer and foxes exist side by side with badgers, eagles and the last sur-viving wolves on the continent. Ancient megaliths, rock carvings and old dolmen graves lie scattered in the park. The ruins of Celtic “castros” and medieval castles rise above little hill towns, where modern life has not yet intruded and oxen are still used to plough the fields.
Famous Garranos: On foot or horse back, one appreciate the vast expanse and diversity of Peneda-Gerês, and meet the famous Garrano Ponies. Walk along narrow shepherd trails or on the ancient cement of Roman roads.
Nationalpark Peneda-Gerês
in Portugal - PAN Parks seit 2008

Europe´s largest wilderness network: 872,352 hectares of wilderness in Europe10th Anniversary – What a success!
Not a long time ago the term wilderness was almost unknown for Euro-pean nature conservation! Europe was considered simply too small and densely populated where basically all remnants of wilderness were lost in the previous centuries. With the beginning of this century a group of people feared so much that pristine wilderness would irreversible disappear, that they started the PAN Parks Wilderness Network.
The PAN Parks Wilderness Network is a European NGO that
1. identifies European wilderness areas2. assists in their designation as protected areas3. supports the local management and4. lobbies on a European level on their behalf
PAN Parks protect the most valuable wilderness sites in Europe through a vast network of partners, scientists, researchers, nature conserva-tionists, media experts, tourism specialists and management teams of more than 50 wilderness areas and PAN Parks in Europe.
PAN Parks - encouraged by the European Parliament Statement that the wilderness belongs to Europe and is an inseparable element of European natural identity - has become the leading force for European wilderness.
Now, after 10 years of caring for our European wilder-ness and initiating The Million Project, we are setting a new target for the next 10 years. Our vision is at least 5% of European territory should be designated as the European Wilderness Preservation System to safeguard our European Wilderness Heritage.
Get in touch with wilderness
For a city-dweller, a short glimpse of intact forest may deliver the sense of wilderness. The further you go into the wild, the more you are de-pendent on your skills and tenure. The key is to enjoy the natural beauty and the stress of physical exercise. I also favour the attitude of being a humble guest there. Wilderness should in general be accessi-ble to everyone.
Defending the wild: Leaving large areas to develop on their own should be the main rule in the management of protected areas. In addition it is essential to manage the effects of tourism that exceeds the acceptable limits. Occasionally also threatened species and their habitats need specific management measures.
Feel the wilderness: I expect that in the near future all European coun-tries recognize and acknowledge their wild heritage and encourage their citizens alike to get that feeling of wilderness. And that’s a goodfeeling!
Enjoy the wilderness and travel wild

Meet Kalkalpen National Park, Austria – Wilderness Partner since 2013
Kalkalpen National Park is a very specific place from a wilderness conservation perspective. The natural processes are permitted on 75% of the area of the National Park and they are the core of a high biological diversity. It is a spontaneously re-wilded region with an especially rich flora and fauna and at the same time with small fragments of cultivated landscapes scattered mostly at the periphery of the park. This makes the newest member of the PAN Parks network so unique. On the 15th of August 2013, an area of 15,600 ha were designated as part of the PAN Parks 1 Mil-lion Project. It is an excellent example that right in the heart of Europe wilderness not only exist but that it also can be protected and managed.
Nationalpark Kalkalpen, Austria
Wildnis-Partner seit 2013
Once bearded vultures were found in almost every mountain range of
southern Europe and the Alps. In numerous legends the bearded vul-
ture, with its glowing red eyes, was feared and it was believed they attacked
even young children. As a result, they were hunted and almost eradicated. The vultures have been reintroduced in the Austrian Alps through a captive breeding programme by the Hohe Tauern National Park and its partners.
Bone breaker: A large proportion of their food consists of bones that they can digest com-pletely, due to their special acidic gastric sys-tem and juices. In order to break larger bones into small pieces, they take them up in the air and drop them on rocks. If the bone does not break the first time, the method is repeated many times until the bone finally breaks.
PAN Park volunteering day
Your volunteering day offers the opportunity to visit the Oulanka NP in Finland and see the Paanajärvi NP in Russia. Experience wild coniferous taiga forests and roaring waterfalls while supporting the maintenance of the Oulanka ancient meadows.
We start with a hike from Basecamp Oulanka to boat-ing down the river Kitka. At Kärpäskelhä we engage in voluntary work for the Oulanka NP and enjoy tra-ditional elk rolls and coffee on an open fire. Working carefully we complete easy tasks. In the afternoon we paddle to the Russian border, to then return to Basecamp. Each volunteer gets a certificate and can donate to wilderness protection. Apply here: [email protected]
Anmelden: +358 (0)400509 741

Lisa Klimek is hiking from the Biosphere Reserve Wiener-wald in Austria to the PAN Park Peneda-Gerês National Park in Portugal. This tour is more than just a 5000 km long walk. Weather, overnight stops, physical and mental limits are one part of the challenge. The other is to draw attention to the loss of biodiversity in Europe. Lisa will pass, explore and experience national parks, biosphere reserves, natural areas of ecological interest and wilderness areas. Follow her on blog: www.walk4wilderness.org.
Walk4Wilderness: Lisa Klimek

Human beings are born to be wild! Why am I so passionate about the preservation of wilderness in Europe? The feeling of true freedom, the prospect of vast natural space, no sign of human activity, no sign of intervention, no compromise with the artificial - where nature is untrafficked, raw and tempting. This is what I felt while standing on the top of the mountains in Küre Mountains National Park of Turkey, which joined our network in 2012. Wilderness is essential for the recovery of threatended species. It is important for the „eco-system ser-vices” since the wild provides clean water, fresh air and stores carbon dioxide. It is a huge gene pool for future research. It is important for our heritage and culture. So much of our identity is intertwined with our landscapes. When properly managed wilderness provides uniquely enjoyable and inspirational experiences. Wild places, „wildness”, „wild values” are so important for our very sanity. Ironically, unlike domestic ani-mals whose nature has been fundamentally changed, we as a species of ourselves have not changed. We have not evolved to live in artificial environments like cities and suburbs. So why is the wild so important to human beings? Because human beings ARE wild animals.
