I once read the cards for a woman who was verymuch interested in love relationships, in finding thetall, dark stranger who would give her love everlas~ing.The reading turned out so well, with the card chemIstryso ideal, that she took those five lucky cards and kept

them in her bra for a week, right next to her heart. Did she find what she was after? Yes. Dozens of times!During those moments of deep personal doubt, or

when the front-page headlines seem unreal and un- believable, I know you've told yourself at least oncewhat a strange world we live in-uncertainty piled upon uncertainty, so many lives affected by so much beyond one's immediate control or ken. These days it'sas if Dr. Anxiety makes house calls everywhere. Truly,it would be a fabulous remedy to get a handle on one'sfuture, immediate or long-term.

Actually, many people through the ages have expressed a similar desire. While the exact origin of play-ing cards remains unknown, there's evidence they werea popular game in the Orient-China, Japan, Korea,India-hundreds of years before they were introduced into Europe, probably somewhere in the twelfth cen-tury, by knights returning from their crusades in theHoly Land.

One of the more popular stories of fortune-tellingwith playing cards involves Charles VI of France,a.k.a. Charles the Mad (1368-1422). Watching him suf-fer from repeated bouts of insanity (manic-depressiveepisodes? schizophrenia? glue sniffing?) beginning atage twenty-four, his mistress, Odette, sought new waysto soothe his torment. She asked some artists to deco-rate a pack of playing cards with pictures of the royalcourt including a likeness of the king and herself.

insight and intuition, the cards hold no energy. Theycan best be described as coded impressions of things tocome, or as a set of windows overlooking the future.With this book, you'll learn how easy it is to open thecurtains to let in the light.

But there's more. Reading the cards can also be agreat adventure in self-awareness, a way to get in touchwithyour own higher centers of consciousness, your own inner voice.

Wen, why not? After all, any professional psychicworth his or her predictive salt will tell you there'smore to the story than simply laying out the cards and reeling off their meaning. And so, when you read thecards for yourself or for someone else, there's a good chance you'll tap into psychic powers of your own,

innate powers which all of us have.You may be asking yourself at this point, "Why

use ordinary playing cards and not Tarot?" There is avery good reason, but it is my reason.

As in every profession, there are those who have atrue calling. So it is with the Tarot. I admire the gifted Tarot card reader who can cut through the symbolismand interpret wisely for his or her client. In the wronghands, however, these cards tend to manifest the dark side of the occult.

Tarot cards, with their archaic, mythological, and highly stylized illustrations, are extremely structured and narrowly defined. Each card is story and story-teller. Because of their pictorial intensity and graphicdepictions, they leave little room for your ownawareness to emerge.

One can study Tarot a lifetime without ever em- ploying individual powers of perception, just memoriz-ing and reading them by rote.

Indeed, this is a powerful tool you're holding. De- pending how you use it, it can determine how you'll feelabout yourself and others. The more you practice withit, the more adept you will become. Your own sen-sitivity will be enhanced, your heart and mind moreopen to that inner guidance system in all of us. It will become as natural as taking a breath. And who knows,you may even shape destiny, including your own.

Still a bit skeptical? Perhaps if! tell you how thecards "found me," it will help your understanding. Itwas a lucky accidental discovery which showed me thedepths of myself.

I was a working mother in the sixties, with theusual complement: one husband, two children, twelvemortgage payments yearly for a house in suburbia, and tranquilizers for stress "as needed." There was toomuch of the now to think about; visions of the futurewere cloudy at best.

You've heard of "The Little Old Lady from Pas-adena"? I found the little old lady from Ronkonkoma.She was a card reader and able to cut through mydoudy vision with her clear-sightedness. We consulted on a regular basis.

One day she asked me to pick up the deck of cardsand read for her. "I don't know how to do that," Inervously protested. She urged me to "use the cards inany way that seems comfortable to you." I awkwardlyobliged, and it was then that my card system wasinstantly conceived, or "divined."

Frankly, I had no conscious idea of what I wassaying, but it made perfect sense to her. She had suc-

ceeded in unlocking a part of myself I had deliberatelytucked away as a child. The "Gift" was mine, then, butseeing things no one else could understand frightened me badly, and I consciously closed down.

1. Light a few candles-either pink or white willdo nicely. They are highly spiritual colors.

2. Incense? Of course. Make it fragrant but notcloyingly so. Use only enough to gently cleanse the air around you.

3. If you want music, listen to whatever relaxesyou before the reading. Music during a reading, evensoothing New Age music, can be distracting.

4. No need to dim the lights or shut the blindsunless you're worried about the guy with the telescopeacross the way.

5. Sit comfortably, regally if you must. Keep bothfeet on the floor; no need for cross-legged contortions.It could block psychic energy flow. Remember, youwant to be able to reach the cards easily and see them

clearly.6. If you think they may pose a problem, gently

Let's do this by

subject of the reading. Face Cards are depicted byHearts and Clubs exclusively (see Fig. 1). All other Jacks, Queens, and Kings are hereinafter referred to asPicture Cards.

3. Place the Face Card in the center of the table, faceup, as in Fig. 2. This card now represents you or the subject of the reading.

4. Shuffle (if reading for yourself) or ask your subjectto shuffle the deck well, until you feel ready. Noneed for fancy cardsmanship; just some efficientshuffling will do fine.

5. Fan out the deck face down. Choose, or ask your subject to choose, any twelve cards. Then putaside the rest.

6. Take the twelve cards and deal them out clockwiseand face up, starting at the top, as shown in Fig. 3.IMPORTANT: Deal them around the Face Card tothe four compass points (North, East, South,West). This will yield four spreads, three cards ineach.

7. Fan out the rest of the pack face down (don't re-shuffle), and select, or ask your subject to select,nine more cards. Again, set aside the remainingcards.

8. Deal out eight of the nine cards, face up, one at atime, two to each of the four sectors. These will beadded to the three existing cards, yielding a five-card spread in each sector, as in Figure 4.

9. Place the ninth card, face up, on the center card (the Face Card). This is the "Destiny Card" (seeFig. 5).

We'll discuss its significance later.10. Scan the sectors-North, East, South, West.

Make sure all the cards are face up and that eachsector contains five cards. Your reading will startwith the layout in the North sector, and then youwill travel to the East, South, and West.

Should you take your play seriously? That is,should you look for any psychic significance in thelayouts with which you're practicing? The answer ismaybe! Some of you will develop your psychic skillsmore quickly than others. Remember, though, you'renot in a race. This is strictly for play, not for keeps. It's

And, when you get alittle message in your head about this person across thetable from you, do spill it out. Even if what you'reabout to say seems strange, say it anyway. Trust your-self. Chances are it will be right on the mark. It's just amatter of opening your intuitive sensibilities to those

coded impressions of the future, the playing cards.

THE DESTINY CARD

Remember the ninth card in the layout, the one we placed over the Face Card in the center? This is theDestiny Card. It is the card that puts an additionalcoloration over the reading. For example, if this card is9H, one can assume that all will turn out wen no matter how bad things appear to be.

But a word of caution. Don't be alarmed if thiscard is not the most positive in the deck. It's just a

piece of the puzzle, not the entire picture. Moreover,what you see in the cards is never inevitable. This istrue for three reasons:

• First, it is your interpretation of what you believeyou see and, therefore, always speculative. It isan educated guess, and the more experienced you become, the more intuitive and closer to the

mark it will be.

It's bound to happen, maybe not during the firstfew readings, but you can be certain it will occur. Thecards show it plainly: a passing, a death.

Perhaps it will appear in a configuration involving4S and lOS. Or perhaps it will be associated with anillness, 5S. It may turn up during the Quest reading, inresponse to a specific question regarding a loved one.

How should you handle such dire prognostica-tions? Do you lay it on the line, call it like you see it? Itcan be a difficult decision, but it will pose less of a

problem if some guidelines are followed.1. ·Use discretion. If your subject is someone you

think can't handle such information without great diffi-culty, don't give it. Remember, you are reading for someone's pleasure and enlightenment. We want tolighten the spirit, not induce anxiety and pain.

2. Recognize that you are not the final word onkey issues of life and death. This is only your interpre-tation of the cards, what you think you see. Moreover,miracles do happen every day. During a reading, when Iam faced with life or death issues, I pray for a positiveoutcome.

3. Note the position of the spread from which youare reading. It can make an important difference in howyou present the information. For example, PictureCards in the South spread may relate to someone whois more on the periphery of your subject's life.

4. Note the neighboring cards, including the Des-tiny Card and those in the other spreads. Even themost unfortunate of card combinations can be influ-enced by the overall reading.

How can you do this? Very simple. First, don't letyour ego get in the way. Avoid dependency situations

with your subjects. You present the reading with loveand affection and that's it. Stay away from giving ad-vice, from telling people what they should or shouldn'tdo with their lives.

Second, in all instances you must be as objectiveand nonjudgmental as possible. You must let the cardstake you out of the situation, as it were, so you can

become an observer rather than a participant, albeit anobserver who is also concerned with preserving thewell-being of the subject. By allowing greater objectivity,you will also allow greater clarity as well as greater openness to answers you might otherwise not see.

And finally, you must strive not to inflict pain or cause harm. It is the responsibility of the card reader to

project a positive outlook, to reinforce or accentuatethe positive, to present optimistic alternatives to other-wise negative circumstances as revealed in the cards.

All that I impart to you, I had to learn. It took me along time, as it will you, but always trust that your best

instincts will surface.When I first began working with the cards, I read for friends and family and anyone who would let me practice on them. Since it was all so new, it was fun agood deal of the time. Occasionally it was serious

it around. It's up to readers to show people that they ..have the ability to empower themselves, that they arefree to turn a potentially bad situation around com- pletely.

This is how I now approach these situations.

Should I perceive an illness, a loss, a separation, I takeit as my responsibility to present it more positivelythan negatively. I'm not referring to telling lies or creat-ing deceptions. My aim is to prepare the clients for what's to come and to do so in such a way that they areable to accept it and find a better way to approach it.

It is also the responsibility of the reader to set .limits. Not every subject is open to metaphysical an-swers. Some feel more comfortable with the tradi-tional. It is my rule to refer and to defer to licensed

practitioners, to steer clients to prevention hot lines ...and support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous. I re-spect the healing community and have found throughtheir referrals that they respect me as well.

In a health crisis situation, for example, you al-ways suggest the client see a physician for a checkupor perhaps a nutritionist for an evaluation. You presentoptions, and not in a dire tone of voice. You, the reader,

present various alternative paths to action based uponyour own positive outlook and your own intuitiveawareness. You show opportunities, but you do notmake decisions. You leave it up to the person tochoose.

There was no need for me to ask her why she wasso sad. The answer appeared in the cards, beginning inthe North spread: QS, 5S, 4S, 5C, and 8S. I saw a passing due to an illness, a woman close to her, perhapsher mother. There would be all that paperwork, thekind of sorting through of insurance forms, legal pa-

pers, and correspondence that often follows the deathof a loved one. And, of course, tremendous sadness.

In the East spread there appeared KC, lOC, 2S,lOH, and 2H. She didn't have to worry about being

alone. She would find happiness again. But she was so blocked by her pain that she couldn't see what wascoming-love and companionship.

The remaining spreads were associated more withtravel and financial matters. It was obvious, at least tome, that she could look forward to a life of fulfillment.Even the Destiny Card predicted as much. It was 4H.

So I told her about the passing of a woman closeto her, about its associated sadness. I said she would find peace of mind soon, despite the emotional distress.

That the paperwork offered an opportunity to copewith her sadness. It required her attention. I asked her to consider the possibility that her worries and painmight pr~vent her from being open to a potential com-

So, you see, the cards may pick up a piece of the blueprint image, and sometimes the time comesthrough clearly. It depends mainly on the reader's in-tuitive sensitivity. Beginners are usually able to makesix-month predictions.

Readings for people in the arts, in my experience,often come true within a six-month period. There will

be times when a numerical Diamond seems out of place in a spread. These pop out at you as a timeelement. And, yes, there are instances during Questreadings when someone asks a time-related question,

and there it is, a red card flashing the numerical an-swer. But even on these occasiOns you must reachdeeply into your intuitive center to come up with anestimate in days, weeks, months, or years. All you'vegot is the number, really. But otherwise, you must feelyour way.

My advice is to try not to make time predictionsunless you feel very secure about it. Sometimes you'llknow when it's right on the money-you'll almost feelit Other times it's better to tell your subject that you

can only estimate. And whatever you do, do not give into a desire to please the subject by offering a time

prediction that's more sooner than later. No matter how long it takes for something to

During these instances, your subject wi11look atyou blankly, quite puzzled. And rightfully so. And somewhere along the line it dawns on you that thisreading is not for that person. But you also realize it isimportant they share it with someone else. This hasoccurred perhaps three or four times in my entire

career.On each occasion, the information came throughas if it were compelled to, as if channeled by someinner voice. It came through very concisely, very di-rectly. It flowed easily. But the reading had nothing todo with my client. Yet within days the client would tellme that the information had been delivered to someonewho needed it, as if we were the messengers.

Once, it happened while I was visiting in Houston,Texas. The subject was a woman involved in radio, her
