SAIPAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Spanish Learning a different language can be time consuming, but very much worth it. As society evolves, so does the linguistics of everyday language. It seems to me that as time passes, people are more than capable and willing to learn more than one language. This is great news considering the fact that society is becoming extremely diverse. At Saipan International School, we’ve had our success with Mandarin, taught by Mrs.Jang. The 2015-2016 school year introduces a different and very useful language, Spanish, taught by Mrs.Bray. In this class, Mrs.Bray aims to teach four main skills: listening, writing, reading, and speaking. Mrs.Bray is able to accomplish these skills by using variations of teaching techniques. One of them is the concept of a “Flipped Classroom.” With this, she hopes to maximize the class time spent practicing speaking the language. Of course, this is assuming students have read practice material outside of the class. She wants students to come to class prepared with knowledge of vocabulary, tenses, genders, etc. Much more of the class time is used for conversational speaking. Another dynamic approach she incorporates is project-based learning(PBL). Through this, students gain knowledge and skill, sometimes by working with group mates, to research and solve engaging and complex questions. Often, students are able to integrate technology such as quizlets on phones, iMovies on MacBook computers, and sharing of music files. Technology advances greatly; why not incorporate it into the education system? Lastly, Mrs.Bray shares one of the most important themes when it comes to languages, the culture. The Spanish culture is amazing, offering great people, landmarks, and let’s not forget the food. Cinco de Mayo is a great big deal even here in the CNMI and students were able to celebrate with quesadillas and entertaining conversations. Clearly, learning a different language isn’t the easiest thing, and can be quite time consuming. But, while language is evolving, society needs to as well. The Spanish class at SIS is a place of diversity, quality standards, and fun learning. As a student of this class, not only am I learning, but I’m also engaging in everyday conversation and technology and now, I’m not limited to just an understanding of one language. There’s a quote by Ludwig Wittgenstein where he says, “The limits of my language means the limits of my world.” -By : Allen Cepeda(G12) FOREIGN LANGUAGES 12 Aysem Bray Spanish/ Yearbook
