smooth, the responsive Hybrid powertrain

leaves you feeling relaxed and refreshed

on every journey. In addition to the hybrid

and 1.33 petrol, the Auris is now available

with a new 1.2 Turbo petrol (1.2 D-4T)

engine. It possesses the excellent economy

you might expect from one so small; but

the sparkling performance and low-end

torque might just surprise you. And just

as impressive is the new 1.6 D-4D, which

off ers dynamic performance and joins

Safety

In the new Auris, safety has been raised to new levels. Optional

Toyota Safety Sense adds advanced active safety systems for an

even safer and more relaxed drive. Four active safety technologies,

Pre-Collision System*, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam

and Road Sign Assist are at the heart of Toyota Safety Sense. On

top of that, there is, of course, a wide range of additional innovative

safety systems. For more information on Auris safety technologies,

please refer to pages 44 and 45. Toyota Safety Sense is an option

on Auris Luna and Sol grades.

TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE

Road Sign Assist

Toyota Safety Sense’s Road Sign Assist

monitors the road signs ahead, displaying

useful information such as the current speed

limit or overtaking restrictions in clear view on

the new colour TFT cockpit display. The system

also provides a visual and acoustic warning if

you are not following the road sign indication.

Lane Departure Alert

Using a camera to detect the lane markings

in the road ahead, Toyota Safety Sense’s

Lane Departure Alert will alert the driver with

audible and visual warnings if the vehicle

starts to deviate from its lane without the

turn indicator being applied – the driver

can then take corrective action.

Pre-Collision System*

Toyota Safety Sense’s Pre-Collision System

uses a camera and laser to detect other vehicles

in the road ahead. When the possibility of

collision is detected the driver is alerted with

audio and visual warnings, and brake assistance

is activated. If the driver fails to brake in time

the brakes automatically engage to prevent

or mitigate a collision.

Automatic High Beam

Toyota Safety Sense’s Automatic High Beam

is designed to optimise visibility during night

driving for all road users. A camera detects the

lights of oncoming vehicles and leading traffi c

whilst also monitoring the brightness of street

lights. It switches automatically between high

and low beam for safer night-time driving.

Glossary

ABS prevents the wheels from locking while braking. EBD complements this by optimising brake force distribution between each wheel to compensate for diff erent loads. Together the two systems help you to maintain steering control when braking heavily.

Toyota Safety Sense adds advanced active safety systems for an even safer and more relaxed drive. Four active technologies – Pre-Collision System*, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist are at the heart of Toyota Safety Sense.

* Technical name: Pre-Crash Safety System.

HAC helps to ensure a smooth start on steep inclines by applying the brakes for up to 2 seconds after the brake pedal is released. This prevents the vehicle from rolling back. It is activated by pushing the brake pedal harder after stopping as long as the transmission shift lever is in any forward gear position.

Hill-start Assist Control (HAC)

If you accelerate too hard and cause the drive wheels to lose grip and begin spinning, TRC will automatically reduce engine power and control brake force to help restore traction.

Traction Control (TRC) Simple IPA automatically manoeuvres you into your chosen parking spot whether between two vehicles or behind one. Using ultrasonic sensors on the front side-bumper to identify a suitable parking space, once engaged, the system automatically performs the steering operations. You simply have to control the reversing speed and let the Simple IPA park your vehicle.

Minimising environmental impact runs through every part of the Toyota business. In designing and developing a new vehicle, every component is carefully considered to ensure environmental effi ciency is optimised throughout its life. The Life Cycle Analysis for the new Auris (engine type 1ND-TV) compared to the previous model, shows a reduction in emissions of all the main pollutants and considerable reductions of 26% in CO (Carbon Dioxide), 48% in NOx (Nitrogen Oxide), 13% in SOx (Sulphur Oxide), 45% in PM (Particulate Matter) and 25% in NMHC (Non-Methane Hydrocarbons).

This is the mantra which has been at the heart of the Toyota business since it began. For example 95% of every Auris is reusable and recoverable, 100% of the materials are coded for easier dismantling and four heavy metals have been completely eliminated all in accordance with the European Directive 2000/53/EC. Our environmental policy means that we off er you new and innovative ways of returning your vehicle when it eventually reaches “the end of the road”.
