2 ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH, ORLAND PARK 12/25/16

The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

CHRISTMAS DAY

Marry Christmas “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests!” Tonight is a night of rejoicing for today is born our Savior, Christ the Lord! A light shines in the darkness of our lives and the way of our steps can be guided to truth and peace. The Prince of Peace comes among us and de-sires to show us the path to happiness. May we all feel God’s presence in our lives and may our faith be renewed! Marry Christmas to all!!! The Gospel of the Lord In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town. And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Notes on the Scripture Children are often afraid of going to bed, fearing the monsters hidden in dark closets or underneath the bed itself. These familiar fears are addressed in a song called “I’ll Go Too” by Carrie Newcomer, as she recalls her own fears at bedtime, when a loving father would comfort her, while holding her hand, and say: I’ll go too, I’ll go too. That’s what he’d say, that’s what he’d do. Don’t go alone, I’ll walk with you. I’ll go too. Today we hear the story of a baby, innocent and vulnerable himself, offering the same kind of comfort. Instead of a grown-up delivering the reassuring message, we are presented with an infant assuring us that all will be well, say-ing in essence, “I’m here now. I have arrived. You are no longer alone. I’ll go too.” Parish App I am happy to announce our new Parish App. Please download it for free to you phones and check our Christmas massage. (Search for: St. Francis of Assisi Parish - Orland Park wherever you access apps.) Let us stay con-nected and continue our journey closer together.

THE GIFT OF GOD'S WORD

On this day of gifts and gift-giving, it seems appropriate that we take a

moment to reflect on the great gift of God's Word. Because it is creative,

God's Word always points to its author, always calls us to respond. Because it is powerful, God's Word

can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the transcendent with the immanent, the divine with the

human. Because it is graceful, God's Word establishes a relationship of

deep intimacy between us and God.

At the heart of God's Word lies a tantalizing tension between the

mysterious and the mundane. In our liturgical celebration, this unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of life for us and calls us to respond,

to act upon that meaning.

Once accepted and opened, the gift of God's Word is a gift that keeps on

giving and keeps on calling us to give in return. It dares us to be like the gift-giver and to become gifts for others, not only at Christmas, but

at every moment of life.

The song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas" is an English Christmas carol. From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a

catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of the

Church.

True Love is Jesus Christ born on Christmas Day - A partridge is willing to sacrifice its life to protect its young.

12/25/16 CHRISTMAS DAY 9

Christmas Greetings!

The weeks before Christmas are a time of busy preparation: decorating the house, shopping for gifts, sending cards, cele-brating with family and friends, and much more. Now that Christmas has arrived, I pray you take the moment to appreciate and enjoy the results of all that effort and that these preparations were not just ends in them-selves but now pro-vide an opportunity to: Enjoy the house, be grateful for gifts received, and re-member friends and family, especially those not with you.

A Blessed Christmas!

If you are reading this article, I assume you received the bulletin at Mass. I am pleased that partici-pating in Mass is part of your Christmas celebration. From my perspective, Christ-mas is empty without such participation. Even though the Church is crowded, (and the parking lot even more so!) I en-

where all are able to pray and participate; not to embarrass any-one during that prayer time. But in this space, outside the liturgy, I take as an opportunity to remind those who are not regular at Mass to join the community on regular basis. It is a concern of all priests that many Catholics no longer attend Mass on a regular basis. In this article, I have been writing about changes in society and the church which have affected parish life as well as each of us. I will continue those specific reflections after January 1st. Since the Christmas masses have a large number of people. I ask a favor. If you are one who attends Mass just at Christ-mas and/ or Easter or maybe just a few times during the year, will you take a mo-ment and share your reasons? Or anyone who has comments or concerns feel free to contact me. [email protected]

Merry Christmas!

joy the opportunity to celebrate Mass and then, as best possi-ble, greet people. It is wonderful to see so many familiar faces. For a parish, prepar-ing for Christmas is a major task. I am ap-preciative that I no longer have that re-sponsibility. I just have to show up. This is my 27th Christ-mas at St. Francis. In the midst of prepa-ration, it is key to keep a focus on the centrality of this day. This feast marks the entrance of Christ into humanity – the Incar-nation. Sometimes, this mystery gets over shadowed by non-essentials or even trivialized. It is the presence of Christ – the light in the darkness that we celebrate. This is why it is important to wel-come all who are at Mass on Christmas, that in our prayer we are all able to be nourished by His presence. I am sure that Fr. Sowa and Fr. Domrowski, along with myself will do that at all the Masses. I want the Christmas Liturgy to be one

MASS INTENTIONS

Both 2017 and 2018 Mass Intentions are currently being ac-cepted in the parish office. The Mass is the Church’s prayer at which all of our needs and hopes and thanksgivings are lifted to God. At the Eucharist, the commu-nity joins with one an-other and places their lives, and all that their lives contain, before God for blessing. St. Francis is happy to receive requests for specific intentions at Mass. If you would like to have the liturgy prayed for your inten-tion, be it in memory of a loved one, a spe-cial need, a celebra-tion or a particular oc-casion in life, please contact the parish of-fice Monday-Friday, or stop at the Information Desk after weekend Mass. Mass Intentions can be offered for the de-ceased or living. St. Francis of Assisi gen-erally limits intentions to three per Mass. The Intention is gener-ally announced during the Prayers of the Faithful and also listed in the parish bulletin.

Communion to Homebound Parishioners

Ministry of Care is a sign of support and con-cern for parishioners who are homebound or recovering from surgery or temporarily in re-

habilitation. If you or a member of your family are unable to attend Mass our Ministers of Care are here to assist by bringing the Holy

Eucharist on a schedule that meets your needs. Please call the Church office: 708-460-0042 or email
