This quote explains why holden experiences so many highs and lows when it comes to his emotions. “That’s depressing when someone says ‘please’ to you. i mean if it's Phoebe or somebody. that depressed the hell out of me… I felt so damn happy all of a sudden, the way old Phoebe kept going around and around. i was damn near bawling, i felt so damn happy.” (Salinger 273)

One way to strengthen your argument and show that you have a deep understanding of the issue you are discussing is to anticipate and address counterarguments or objections. By considering what someone who disagrees with your position might have to say about your argument, you show that you have thought things through, and you dispose of some of the reasons your audience might have for not accepting your argument.

There are four key components to addressing the counterargument: your claim, the turn against, the turn back, and the rebuttal. Before you can address the counterclaim you must have a solid claim or stance on the topic. You must acknowledge what someone might argue against your claim (turn against) before you dismiss their reasoning (turn back) and provided evidence to show why your reasoning is correct (rebuttal).

Counterclaim:

Page 8: 12/21/15 Do Now: - Take a packet from the front. Homework: - “Show your Growth” assignment Due 12/23 by 11:59pm Objective: Objective: Students will reflect.

Guiding Questions:- Did you make it clear that you do not agree with the counterargument?- Is the counterargument relevant to the argument?- Can you identify the turn against and the turn back?- Did you offer a rebuttal to the counter argument?- Did you address the counterclaim in such a way that it weakens your

own argument?

Counterclaim:

Turn Against: Turn Back:There are those who believe… What they have not considered is…Many people believe… While that might seem true…One may argue… However, he/she fails to see…Some people who disagree with my position might say…

However, they fail to see…

On the one hand… On the other hand…While some consider… Must believe that…

Teenagers who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder are constantly fighting an internal battle to escape a horrifying moment they once encountered in the past. Some might argue that Holden is just a normal teenager who finds it difficult to cope with his feelings regarding the death of his brother and the death of his fellow peer from Pency. However, evidence proves that adolescents suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorders have very high anxiety and try to avoid any reminders of the trauma. “What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?” states, “people suffering from PTSD show symptoms of having anxiety, symptoms of avoidance, as well as symptoms of hyperarousal. Hyperarousal includes anger outbursts, concentration difficulties, and difficulties sleeping.” Holden has struggled most of his life regarding his family, school and coming of age in general, additionally, he has a very difficult time letting go of the past and moving on. “The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody’d move…Then a funny thing happened. When I got to the museum, all of a sudden I wouldn’t have gone inside for a million bucks”(Salinger 121-122). This exemplifies how Holden tries to avoid memories of his past yet he still relives them. He went on a rant about how great the museum was and all the great qualities it had. Yet when it was time for him to go in he suddenly didn’t go in and refused to step foot inside the museum. Also the museum symbolizes Holden’s desire to live in a fantasy world where nothing changes. Readers can assume that this wish reflects on the fact that Holden has faced many traumatizing events that lead him to wish for constant stability. Holden carries his past with him, which doesn’t allow him to move on so he constantly relieves his trauma even though he tries his best to avoid it by not returning home or by not acknowledging the fact that Allie died. “My parents go out quite frequently and stick a bunch of flowers on old Allie’s grave. I went a couple times, but I cut it out”(Salinger 155). Holden puts all his effort into avoiding anything that solidifies the fact that Allie is dead. So in order to stop reliving Allie’s death that he refuses to go to his brother’s death. Aside from his sleeping issues Holden also has an anger issue. He has extremely violent imaginations of shooting people or himself being injured. Holden also broke all the windows in his garage and attempted to break the window of a car, however he couldn’t do to the damage he inflicted on his hand. Overall one can see that Holden is not a normal teenager because he constantly attempts to avoid his past, yet he still relieves it through his violent outbursts and thoughts .
