BRINGING ADVANCED METAlS MANuFACTuRING BACkTo THE u.S. — AND PoRTAGE CouNTY

According to Dave Worth, President/CEO of the Worth Company, imported goods have

long presented a challenge to American manufacturers in all industries. What varies, notes Worth, is the country producing the majority of imported goods to the U.S. “In the 60s it was Japan. Korea was strong in the 80s and 90s and China took over at the turn of the century.” That said, he notes, “China’s role seems to have run its course.” At least that’s what he’s experienced first-hand at Worth.

Worth Company, established 70 years ago as a metal fabricator for the fishing industry, has diversified its offerings. Today, Worth remains a major supplier of fishing lure components and consumer marine products, but the business has diversified to include mass production of stamped products, wire forms and split and key rings. Last year they produced approximately a billion parts on their high-speed metal manufacturing equipment.

On December 4 over 150 students participated in the Partners in Education (PIE) Reality Shop at Stevens Point Area High School. The Reality Shop is a financial literacy event where students put their budgeting skills into action. Before the Reality Shop opens, students are assigned an occupation, income and benefits, marital status and family. With this information, students create a monthly budget that includes housing, child care, groceries, transportation and everything else a family needs for a month.

The Reality Shop is “staffed” by area business representatives and volunteers who “sell” their services to the students. For example, realtors sell houses, car dealers sell vehicles, and insurance agents offer insurance

coverage. After the event, students spent time reflecting on their experience to determine if any “conflicts” existed between the dream and reality.

The event was a great experience for business representatives, educators and students. The students were surprised to find out how much things cost as well as the amount of things that are required for daily living. They also found that unexpected events in life can really wreak havoc within a budget.

Thank you to the following businesses and their representatives for making the Reality Shop such a

success: Point Title, LLC, Worth Company, University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, Wisconsin Public Service, Ministry Health Care, United Way of Portage County, SCORE, Community Industries Corporation, Central City Credit Union, Community Insurance & Associates, Len Dudas Motors, River Cities Bank, Portage County UW - Extension, Kelly Services, Stevens Point Area YMCA, Ellis Stone, Sam’s Club and the Central WI Children’s Museum.

In an ongoing pursuit of business opportunities for our members, our POWER Breakfast was held on November 7, 2012.

Early risers came out for breakfast and the event held at the Best Western Plover Hotel & Conference Center, featuring a presentation by Jeff Martin, Regional Vice President for Ministry Health Care & President of St. Michael’s Hospital and Dr. Mark Fenlon, Regional Vice President for Ministry Medical Group. They provided our audience insights into the impact and challenges of the new health care reform laws, an overview of the local and national implications and Ministry’s plans to respond. Their presentation was entitled “Health Care Reform: Moving from Volume to Value”.

POWER Breakfast provides educational and professional development opportunities to

Business Council members and the communities of Portage County. Special thanks to our Presenting Sponsor of the November event: Applied Tech – Stevens Point.

Here is what our members thought of the event:“I found the presentation to be timely and informative;

it was great to have the opportunity to discuss these

issues while networking with individuals within the

community.”

Ahmie-Woma Farkas, District Manager-Stevens Point-Marshfield, Kelly Services

“This event was very informative. We hear so often

about what the effects of ACA (Obamacare) will be on

businesses and on individuals. It was good to hear the

perspective from the providers themselves. I gained

a better understanding of the pressures that Ministry

is facing in the near and long term as well as their

approach to handling these immense changes.”

Purchasing Portage County gift certificates continues to be a successful way to “Buy Local”.

Portage County gift certificates makes great gifts. Gift certificates can be purchased at area banks, credit unions, the Convention and Visitors Bureau or at our office. They can be used at any business with a Portage County address and are available in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $25, $50 & $100.

The PCBC would like to thank everyone who participates for helping make the program successful. We would also like to thank BMO Harris Bank for their financial support of the gift certificate program.
