Pote, Marcel. Introduction lUrbanisme. Sens et Tonka, Paris, 2000. First published in 1929, Boivin, Paris.:

    p. 128 The sea is the great path of exchange between men, urban activities are coordinated on its edges or in contact with it, rising or ebbingaccording to the fluctuations of the commercial current. To this path we join those that constitute the flow of water and the paths on land,

considered in the traces left by

Nature and those left by Man. In fact, though many routes are of a natural order, others are human creations, pure and simple.

    p. 170 Los Angeles has as its origin an Indian village, chosen in 1777 by a Spanish governor, as a supply center. The city, created in 1781,became incorporated in 1851, during the Gold Rush. Its development was initially based on agriculture, but it was situated at the intersectionof several commercial routes and became a center of distribution for a vast region. In 1869, the railroad linked its port, San Pedro, one of the

best on the Pacific, to the city and was then annexed. The city benefited later, without mentioning other elements of development, from theconnection to the transcontinental railroad, which was aligned to meet it. The citys population then grew from 102,000 inhabitants in 1900 to

576,000 in 1920, a nearly six hundred percent increase in 20 years.
