Step #1 Mark both rope ends as follows: Measure 1 full fid + one short fid length from the bitter end of the rope, this is mark “A” Then from mark A measure and additional 2 full fid lengths, this is mark “B” Step #2 – Cut the ends of each rope at an angle so as to create a slight taper for splicing. Then attach a splicing fid to the end of rope #2 and pass it through rope #1 at mark A. Note: Open the rope so that the fid passes between the strands (not snagging any fiber), and with an equal number of strands on each side. Pull the end of rope#2 through until it’s mark A passes though rope#1 Step #3 – Attach the fid to the opposite end of rope#1 and pass it through rope#2 at mark A. Step #4 – Pull rope#1 all the way through and then pull on the standing part of the two ropes to lock the cross over.

Step #5 – Attach a fid to the end of rope#1 and insert it into rope#2; enter rope#2 one rope diameter down from the cross over and exit at mark B

Step #6 – To taper the splice, pull out as much of end#1 as possible then cut the strands at varying lengths.Milk the rope from the cross over (markA) to mark B to bury the tapered splice.

Step #7 – Repeat steps 5 & 6 for the end of rope #2.

Step #8 – Complete the splice by using whipping twine in a lock stitch on each side to secure the buried tails
