Heritage Sites That You Need To See
The remains of Chimu Kingdom, this earthen city is well-planned, safely contained inside are
nine citadels with temples, palaces, burial grounds etc., separately marked and planned. The
clarity of vision and the nitty-gritties of planning from the 15th century are truly amazing!
CHAN CHAN, PERUDesignated in – 1986, Cultural
The tallest pre-modern stone Budhha in the world, its construction began in 713. It is
carved out of a cliff at the confluence of three rivers. its location makes it even more
majestic with rivers gushing right below its stone feet.
LESHAN GIANT BUDDHA, CHINADesignated in – 1996, Mixed
With caves and tsingys (pinnacles) carved out of limestone, the plateau comprises a forest
inhabited by rare species of lemurs and other animals. This site shines out because of its unique
and dramatic landscape.
TSINGY DE BEMARAHA STRICTNATURE RESERVE, MADAGASCAR

A 3rd century masterpiece designed to hold grand spectacles and shows, this gladiator-style
amphitheater can hold a massive crowd of over 35,000. A fine example of Roman
architecture, its resemblance to the Roman Colosseum is uncanny.

Underneath a national park located in Kentucky lies this longest cave system in the world. The
caves are still getting discovered and not all of it is open to public. Regular cave tours are

A defence line of about 135 km circling Amsterdam was built to protect the city in case of
enemy attacks. The series of forts work in tandem, combined with the principles of flooding to

Meaning ‘Whales Valley’ in Arabic, Wadi Al-Hitan contains fossils depicting the evolution of
whales, crocodiles, sea turtles, sea snakes and other sea animals. They are spread across a
large area, in huge numbers, which make it an extraordinary site.

Quite an odd addition to the World Heritage List, Schroder House was designed by Dutch
architect Gerrit Rietveld. What makes it interesting is that it was made as an open-plan house
without interior walls. Now it's a museum open to visitors.
