• Many German verbs are irregular: they have the same endings as regular verbs, but the vowel in the stem changes in the du and er/sie/es forms. Many of these verbs, called stem- changing verbs, can be put into categories according to how the stem vowel changes.

The third person singular form of geben, es gibt, is an idiomatic expression that means there is or there are.
