4) Launch study, joint activity task 2 & 4 - 1a) Vortex PIE Calculations - Jim Morris

Simulations of a Vortex launch into OM3 and OM1 fibres were presented and compared with CL and OSL launches, with and without connectors; PIE-D results agreed to 0.2dB with John Ewen's work on OSL and CL launches into OM3 and OM1 fibres. With connector offsets, the 99% coverage PIE-D values on OM3 were 4.8, 6.7 and 6.1 respectively for CL, OSL and Vortex lens with M=4. On OM1, the 99% coverage PIE-D values were 5.9, 5.8 and 6.1dB respectively for CL, OSL and Vortex lens with M=4. It was noted that these PIE-D values were slightly higher than experimental measurements reported by Lew Aronson on the January 5th call. Vortex lenses with M=9 were also simulated but showed higher attenuation in the fibre and were expected to increase modal noise issues.

Discussion and comments following

Limiting the number of modes and out of spec 54YY fibres would be expected to decrease PIE-D values by perhaps a couple of tenths of a dB. A question was raised on what additional PIE-D penalty would be acceptable to the group for a 'universal' launch. The sensitivity of the Vortex launch to polarization and dynamic effects was asked about - this had not been studied. Piers Dawe commented that he hoped more experimental data would be available soon. It was noted that a Vortex launch would be expected to meet either of the encircled flux tests appropriate for 13um and 20um OSL patch cords.

b) Discussion of updates to draft launch recommendations table - all

There was some discussion on the issue of specifying multiple alternate launches, and how/if this may be introduced into the standard. Some thought this may be confusing; it was noted that this may need careful wording, but that it would be just a 'standardization' of accepted practice for 1Gige links. The group was unresolved.

It was agreed that table of launch recommendations rev0.1 should be updated to include revised EF (encircled flux) definitions (as noted by David Cunningham in comments 52, 56, 58, to the 802.3aq draft 1.0 ) for primary launches, and that alternate launches for each fibre type should be added to the table. EF test definitions for Vortex launch were also suggested. A comment was made that EF was a fairly loose launch test, and alternative tests were requested. A suggestion to use Mode Power Distribution or Mode Transfer Function was made by Paul Kolesar.   (MPD is the normalized mode group power as a function of normalized mode group number. MTF is the normalized mode power as a function of normalized mode number.  Paul said that instruments are available that measure EF, MPD, MTF, and took an action item to provide references.
