In Phil 3:1-3 Paul adds to the Biblical teaching on the issue of distinguishing between genuine and false faith.
![Page 5: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Here we are given five qualities of true believers: 1)they rejoice in the Lord, 2)they exercise discernment, 3)they worship in the Spirit,
![Page 6: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
4)they glory in Christ Jesus,5)they put no confidence in the flesh.
![Page 7: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Two weeks ago we covered #1)”true believers rejoice in the Lord” so today we will continue with #2)true believers exercise discernment.
![Page 8: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Philippians 3:3 3“for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh,”
![Page 9: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
*True "circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit.”*Only those with transformed hearts can please God.
![Page 10: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
No ritual — not baptism, circumcision, communion, or any other — can transform the heart.
![Page 11: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
The Judaizers (legalistic Jews) viewed themselves as set apart to God, and their physical circumcision as emblematic of that reality.
![Page 12: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
*But theirs was a false circumcision (katatome).
*Katatome - (false circumcision) literally means "mutilation”.
![Page 13: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
The apostle's indictment of the Judaizers is shocking.
![Page 14: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Because it did not reflect a cleansed heart, their circumcision was as meaningless as the ritual mutilation in pagan religions.
![Page 15: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
In Gal 5:12 Paul expressed that very truth even more forcefully: "I wish that those who are troubling you would even mutilate themselves."
![Page 16: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
*Apokopto("mutilate") is an even stronger term than katatome. *In its other New Testament uses it is translated "cut off" or "cut away”.
![Page 17: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
In extra-biblical Greek literature, apokopto was also used of castration and that is the sense in which Paul used it in Galatians.
![Page 18: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
The apostle's point is that if the Judaizers believed that the mere outward ritual of circumcision pleases God, why did they not take that devotion to its ultimate
![Page 19: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
extreme and castrate themselves?
![Page 20: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Circumcision (or any external ritual or ceremony) is meaningless if it does not reflect a transformed heart.
![Page 21: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Those who teach otherwise are not praiseworthy religious people doing their best (in their own flesh) to please God.
![Page 22: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
They are purveyors of demon doctrines (1 Tim 4:1), who hold "to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power" (2 Tim 3:5).
![Page 23: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
We, as believers, are to "avoid such men as these" (2 Tim 3:5).
![Page 24: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Unlike the katatome (the false circumcision), believers are the peritome, the true circumcision.
![Page 25: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
*We have an inward spiritual cleansing, not a meaningless outward mark. *Three explicit qualities in verse 3 identify believers as the true circumcision.
![Page 26: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
3)TRUE BELIEVERS WORSHIP IN THE SPIRIT
“who worship in the Spirit of God” Philippians 3:3 a
![Page 27: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
*The first quality of a genuine believer is a heart that overflows with worship. *The origin of that worship is supernatural, since the Spirit of God generates it.
![Page 28: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Acceptable worship involves adoration and praise to God, and transcends outward rituals or ceremonies.
![Page 29: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
But worship prompted by culture, tradition, guilt, fear, desire for acceptance and popularity, or to gain blessings is unacceptable to God.
![Page 30: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
God says:6“For I desire loyalty rather than sacrifice, And the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.” Hosea 6:6
![Page 31: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
The indwelling Holy Spirit prompts true and acceptable worship out of love for the Lord.
![Page 32: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Matthew 22:37-3937“Jesus said unto him, “ ‘THOU SHALT LOVE THE LORD THY GOD WITH ALL THY HEART, AND WITH ALL THY SOUL, AND WITH ALL
![Page 33: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
THY MIND.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, ‘THOU SHALT LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS
![Page 34: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
THY SELF.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40 KJV
![Page 35: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
Matthew 3:17“a voice came out of the heavens and said, ‘This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased’”. *Pleased in for doing what?
![Page 36: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Since the Holy Spirit only indwells Christians (Rom 8:9), only they can truly worship the Savior.
![Page 37: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
Speaking to a Samaritan woman (John 4:1-26), Jesus clearly defined true and acceptable worship.
![Page 38: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
Shocked by His omniscient exposure of her dissolute life (v16-18), she tried to change the subject: "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
![Page 39: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship" (v19-20).
![Page 40: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
In response Jesus declared, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father" (v. 21).
![Page 41: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
True worship takes place in the heart, not at a sacred location. (the Holy Land)
![Page 42: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
The Lord then revealed a second truth about true worship: "You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews" (v. 22).
![Page 43: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
Acceptable worship is based on the truths of salvation revealed in the Scriptures, which were first given to the Jewish people (Rom 3:2).
![Page 44: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
*It is not to be performed according to the whims of the worshipers. *Then Jesus gave the clearest definition of worship in all of Scripture:
![Page 45: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
"But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
![Page 46: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth" John 4:23-24.
![Page 47: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
The twice-repeated phrase "in spirit and truth" defines the essence of true worship.
![Page 48: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
God saved believers to worship Him. It is those "true worshipers who worship the Father in spirit and truth" that "the Father seeks to be His worshipers."
![Page 49: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/49.jpg)
True Christians are those who worship God from the heart in obedience to His Word.
![Page 50: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
In Ps 29:2 David exhorts, "Ascribe to the Lord the glory due to His name; worship the Lord in holy array."
![Page 51: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/51.jpg)
Ps 95:6 adds, "Come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.“ *(Walk, stand, sit - kneel.) *2 Chronicles 7:14 “If My …”
![Page 52: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/52.jpg)
Worship is mankind's highest duty; in the words of the Westminster Shorter Catechism, "Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever."
![Page 53: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/53.jpg)
Latreuo (worship) might best be translated "to render respectful spiritual service."
![Page 54: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/54.jpg)
True worship goes beyond praising God, singing hymns, or participating in aworship service.
![Page 55: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/55.jpg)
The essence of worship is living a life of obedient service to God. (24/7 & 365.25 days per year)
![Page 56: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/56.jpg)
"Do not neglect doing good and sharing," exhorts the writer of Hebrews, "for with such sacrifices God is pleased" (Heb 13:16).
![Page 57: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/57.jpg)
True worship involves every aspect of life.
![Page 58: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/58.jpg)
*Several characteristics mark true worshipers. *First, they love God. *That is in stark contrast to unbelievers, who hate Him.
![Page 59: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/59.jpg)
In Rom 1:30 Paul describes unbelievers as "haters of God" while in Rom 8:7 the apostle points out that "the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God."
![Page 60: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/60.jpg)
Christians' love for God will never be perfect in this world, but it will always be there.
![Page 61: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/61.jpg)
Because true worshipers love God, they find in Him their source of joy and delight. They acknowledge that "the joy of the Lord is their strength" (Neh 8:10).
![Page 62: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/62.jpg)
They "sing for joy in the Lord" because they are filled "with the joy of the Holy Spirit". Like the psalmist, they find in "God their exceeding joy" (Ps 43:4).
![Page 63: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/63.jpg)
True worshipers "delight to revere His name" (Neh 1:11), and heed David's exhortation, "Delight yourself in the Lord" (Ps 37:4).
![Page 64: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/64.jpg)
The contemplation of God's glory and majesty, and what He has done in our lives, is our supreme joy and delight.
![Page 65: 12 December 18, 2011 Philippians, Chapter 3 Verse 3](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081519/554ff15eb4c905bc138b4986/html5/thumbnails/65.jpg)
True worshipers also have a confident trust in God that produces peace. That peace is based not on our circumstances, but on our relationship with God.
