By Jazelle Hunt NNPA Washington Correspondent

WASHINGTON (NNPA) – On Saturday, thousands of Americans across the country registered their objection to police officers not being held accountable after killing unarmed citizens, many of them Blacks, by mounting massive demonstrations and rallies, the main one held here in the nation’s capital.

Organized by major civil rights organizations, the goal of the protest was to demand federal intervention in state prosecutorial systems that have failed to indict anyone in the police killings of victims such as Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Aiyana Stanley-Jones, and Pearlie Golden.

“We must have this nation deal with the fact that just like 50 years ago, the states have taken a position to rob the human rights and civil rights of citizens with states rights-protected laws,” said Al Sharpton, the rally’s chief organizer.

The demands by Sharpton included: expanding the powers for the Justice Department to investigate state prosecution procedures; national legislation to lower the threshold for grand jury indictments of police officers; and independent special prosecutors to examine potential cases of police brutality or misconduct.

The march drew a multiracial, intergenerational sea of sign-toting citizens from all over the nation. Wanda Sharif, from Beaumont, Texas, had already been in Washington to help care for her grandchild, but extended her visit to attend the march.

The grandmother of seven recalled marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at 11 years old, and attending all-White schools until enrolling at Spelman College in Atlanta.

“I’ve been doing this for three generations. I have to be here to document for my grandchildren, so they know I was here,” she says. “It’s important that everybody sees – not just America, but the whole world should see that we have not made all the progress and accomplished all that we thought we did. More and more eyes are opening. We’re still fighting for the same things we were fighting for in the ‘60s.”

Washington D.C. residents Albert and Andrea Elliott brought their 12-year-old grandson, Jeremiah, to use the march as a

teachable moment. “I brought my grandson to his first march so he understands that what he is doing is right. We’re teaching him solidarity…and that he can speak up and be nonviolent without being afraid,” she says. “We as a people have to stick together and be more involved…. We have to go to the source, where the laws are made, to put our foot on their necks.”

As they planned their attendance, Jeremiah asked about previous civil rights demonstrations, police violence, and tear gas. “It’s not fair to kill Black people because you have the power and authority to do stuff like this that we can’t,” he says of his personal reasons for attending. “I don’t think it’s fair to kill Black people for no reason.”

University of Maryland students and Divine Nine fraternity members Marcus Davis, Justin Ferguson, and Akiel Pyant carried a “Black Lives Matter” banner.

“I’m here because I’m concerned about the future. If our grandparents went through this, and we’re going through this, Lord only knows what my grandchildren will go through,” says Davis, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

The light police presence blocked traffic and generally stayed out of the way as the loud but peaceful processional traveled six blocks to the main stage at the foot of the Capitol’s front lawn. Both national and international media were present, as well as union organizations, Black Greek letter organizations, civic and grassroots organizations, student groups, and families. Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’ and ‘What’s Happening

Brother’ met the marchers as they arrived at the main stage, where media trucks, government Suburbans, and a stilted press box overflowing with photographers flanked the crowds.

With the Capitol as a backdrop, the main stage featured a lineup of speakers including Representative Al Green (D-Texas), Newark, N.J. Mayor, Ras Baraka, Howard University Student Association President, Leighton Watson, and more.

Activist and radio host, Joe “The Black Eagle” Madison served as master of ceremonies. The lineup also featured the unexpected addition of a young contingent of Ferguson, Mo. protesters. At the gathering point before the march, where a different set of speakers addressed the crowd, about 15 members of the ad-hoc D.C. Ferguson group occupied the stage area, using chants and bullhorns to call attention to the fact that Ferguson protesters had not been invited as partners.

The group has been demonstrating since August, and was responsible for shutting down I-395 in protest last month. Two DC Ferguson members and one Ferguson native and protester bypassed security and took to the stage. Security attempted to remove them without force.

As the NAN speaker at the podium tried to speak over the commotion with calls for “respect for one another” and unity, Erika Totten, one of the D.C. Ferguson members onstage, used a bullhorn to say, “They have been out there for more than 100 days.” After several minutes of heated exchange onstage between the contingent

and several National Action Network organizers, the organizers allowed Totten to speak at the podium.

She spoke very briefly then passed the microphone to St. Louis native and Ferguson protester, Johnetta Elzie. “I’ve been in Ferguson for 127 days. I got shot one time with a rubber bullet standing on my neighborhood street. I’ve been tear gassed nine times in a neighborhood where I pay taxes, because I decided to exercise my First Amendment rights and go protest for the death of Mike Brown,” Elzie said. “This movement was started by the young people. We started this. It should be young people all over this stage.” Afterward, an NAN representative approached the group and spoke to Totten about building an alliance. At the main stage after the march, Rep. Green, Madison, and Sharpton addressed the discord between youth and grassroots actions, and those organized by civil rights leaders. “We who are a little older, a little grayer, are proud of the young people speaking out,” said Madison, referring to youth protesters as young John Lewises and Fannie Lou Hamer, two civil rights legends.

Green echoed similar statements, adding that elders were not here to lead, but to “get out of the way.” Sharpton added, “We don’t all agree with each other. We don’t all have the same tactics. But we all have the same goal, and that is equal protection under the law. This is not a Black march, or a White march…it is an American march for the rights of all American people.”

The Washington march was also the only one attended by the families of well-known unarmed Black male victims: Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Akai Gurley, Tamir Rice, John Crawford III, Lavar Jones, Cory Ball Jr., Trayvon Martin, and Amadou Diallo.

All of the families were given time to speak. “We’ve been here so many times. I know in 2000, when the four White officers were acquitted of killing my son, of all charges, I thought the world was ending,” said Kadiatou Diallo. Her unarmed son Amadou Diallo was shot 41 times by four New York Police Department officers in 1999.

“…We said stop police brutality then. And today, 16 years later, we’re here demanding the same thing.”

Across the nations, women owned businesses are on the rise. If you’ve ever considered owning your own business, now might be a great time to make this a reality.

If you have the drive, but don’t have an idea for a startup, or don’t have the desire to build something from scratch, franchising can offer a sensible path to business ownership.  When you buy a franchise, you are in essence buying the territorial rights to operate an established brand and business model in your own market.

Rapidly growing franchise Good Feet, known as  one of the best Franchises for women, offers tips for women looking to purchase a franchise or are new to the franchise ownership world.

Many of Good Feet's existing franchisees are rapidly expanding their stores to other markets. In fact, 22 franchisees are now multiple store owners accounting for 77 of the firm’s 107 total stores.

This impressive growth strategy not only validates the appeal of the company's business model, but notes a remarkable trend in the franchising industry overall.  Good Feet has 19 female owners (or co-owners), many who have owned their businesses for more than 10 years.

Female owners from the growing franchise have compiled these Top 5 Tips for Women In Franchising:

    1) Thoroughly research your opportunities and choose a business that fits your personality and passions – for instance, Good Feet is a hybrid retail / health business.  If you like retail, and the ability to help customers feel better, and reasonable store hours, then Good Feet might be a great choice for you.

If you like retail but want to be around food all day long, then perhaps a Bennigan’s or a Johnny Rockets would be more to your liking.  There are literally so many franchising options available that you should take your time finding the one that fits your personality and passions;

    2)  Make sure you feel good and connect with your Franchisor’s support team. – Do they take the time to answer all of your questions thoroughly? Do they explain complicated terms and programs effectively?  At the end of the day, if you have challenges and need support, your Franchise Support team is who you’re going to need to rely upon;

3)  Treat your business as you would a child you are parenting – It needs all of your time and attention as you are growing it.  As the business gets older, just as does your child, you loosen up a little and give it and its employees more freedom. Once you are a parent you are always a parent and you are always there for your child no matter what the age of the child is. The same for your business: you must always be there for it and involved in it.

 4)   Don’t be afraid to ask for help or assistance – One of the benefits of being part of a franchise is that there’s likely another franchisee who has experienced what you are experiencing.

If not, most Franchise Support teams have a wealth of experience dealing with a variety of issues across the business.  You can always ask your Franchise Support team for help.  Always remember, the franchisor only succeeds if you, the franchisee, also succeeds;

5)       Stay Healthy – Having your own business and building that business becomes your lifestyle, not a typical 9-to-5 profession, and working to the point of exhaustion will burn you out and make you less productive. As you continue to focus on the success of your business; don't make excuses that you’re “too busy to eat”. Make sure you eat right, exercise and find time for yourself.  A healthy diet will help you look and feel your best so that you stay on top of your growing business and enjoy life.

The Good Feet® Store franchising company established in 1992, is an international franchised retailer of personally fitted, pre-fabricated arch supports with over 100 franchises located throughout the United States (and Puerto Rico), Canada, Ireland, England, Kuwait, the Unite Arab Emirates and Korea. Young people around the country are speaking out against injustices and more and more signs of illegal acts by police officers are surfacing on the internet.

Some are saying that protests don’t work and others are celebrating the activism displayed.

I tend to choose to stand on what I deem to be the right side of history.

There’s nothing like being the people who lack backbones, fortitude or a level of consciousness to speak out during times of turmoil and urgency; but decades later they want to act as though they were doing the right thing all along.

You know what I’m talking about, like the people who mocked Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when he was alive but listening to them today, over 50 years later, they were a few rows behind Dr. King as he marched in the streets.

Here we are, in another century, fighting injustices, racism and a number of other isms, only to find that half the battle is fighting those who stand to benefit the most

from the valiant efforts of tbe courageous, who more important than finding something to die for; they’ve found something to live for.

How can you blame someone for having the guts, willpower, or sense to do something that you can’t bring yourself to do?

You nay not agree with the tactics, strategies or execution, but you can move out of the way

and let those who have a desire do what they feel is necessary; without your griping and moaning.

If you don’t agree, do your own thing. Come up with your own strategy. Or, you can sit home watching your sop operas, reality shows or cartoons--like you don’t have a care in the world.

That is, after all, better than using the media to attack progress.

I smile every time I see or hear about someone else doing something to call attention to the war we are fighting to make this world a better place.

Maybe, just maybe if enough people stand up and speak out, we will all be able to breathe!

“The cops are awesome,” Barkley told CNN on Tuesday. “They’re the only thing in the ghetto between this place being the wild wild West.” –“Sir” Charles Barkley – Times Magazine

I was waiting for Supreme Court Injustice Clarence Thomas to carry the “White man’s water” in this latest series of miscarried justice, but I guess Charles Barkley had the lowest bid. This over-zealous, semi-literate Negro did what good coloreds are supposed to do…Charles came up with a line almost as asinine as the ones former New York

Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been spouting to support the non-indictment of officers who committed murder.

Let me make two strong declarations upfront; 1. Not all cops are bad, but the good ones need to start speaking up quickly. 2. If you think Charles Barkley is a plain spoken, tell-it-like-it-tis Rhodes Scholar, just notice that he never has a script or teleprompter like all of the other sports journalists. He’s a hack!!

You know by now, that it’s a cherished choice of mine to bring you old sayings,

colloquialisms, clever quotes and bits of wisdom that survive history. But here is one that I coined myself, tailor-made for Charlie Barkley; “When you engage a worrisome fool you marry your worst fears.” In other words; trying to

discern or defend against the mind and mannerisms of an idiot is idiotic.

Chuck Barkley is a millionaire by the virtue of the fact that he is a sold-out Negro, a coonish caricature and a fully-functioning s u b s i d i a r y of White conservatism and White privilege. Chuck is an embarrassment to the Freedom Fighters and

martyrs who served his home state of Alabama and this nation so well. But…Enough of that Negro.

Rather than get engaged to a witless fool I would rather marry the wisdom and bravery of other sports heroes. I will leave Chuck and quiet Negroes like Michael Jordan to their cigars and golf clubs.

Let’s concentrate on Curt Flood whose bravery spawned the notion and birth of Free Agency that made Charles rich. Or the great and gracious Muhammad Ali who’s fights for freedom and justice compelled

this nation and the world to go the extra round for the sake of freedom and dignity.

How about Wilma Rudolph who exchanged her Olympic star status to become an earthly gift to the Civil Rights and

Women’s Rights movements? Or maybe Jackie Joyner-Kersee who made the long jump from Gold Medalist to return to help in communities that look like ghettos.

Fast forward to today and there are more than a few athletes paying the freight of freedom. Protests take a lot of nerve, but to Protest Ferguson Police where they live under the bright glaring lights of the National Football League require character and strength.

Fox News reported it this way. “Prior to kickoff of their

game against the Oakland Raiders, Rams wide receivers Tavon Austin and Kenny Britt came out together and raised their hands, but the move was obscured by a smoke machine in the upper reaches of the Edward Jones Dome. Jared Cook, Stedman Bailey and Chris Givens then came out and stood together with hands raised in the fog.”

Take that Uncle Charlie. And by the way they went on to win the game 52 to nuthin’ as we say here in the ghetto!!!

LeBron James and so many other NBA players are

speaking out vociferously and vehemently. If Charles could read a Muhammad Ali quote, he may understand this movement that is statistically as diverse as any in this nation’s history; “Wars of nations are fought to change maps. But wars of poverty are fought to map change.”

This fight is all about the poverty of injustice that resides in our communities and apparently there’s nothing to fight about in Charlie’s neighborhood.

Prescription drug abuse has become a major public health issue in our country. According to Trust for America, a Washington, D.C. based research organization, deaths in America related to drug abuse are greater than those that result from the use of illegal substances such as heroin and cocaine combined.

The abuse of prescription drugs results in a loss of $53 billion annually in medical costs, lost productivity and criminal justice costs, according to a report by Trust for America.

The highly-regarded group states that only one of ten Americans with a drug abuse problem receives any type of treatment for their illness.

Deaths from the use of prescribed drugs have risen significantly during the past twenty years, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most of these deaths were the result of the misuse of substances that were prescribed by licensed health professionals.

Males were 60 percent more likely to die from the use of prescription drugs than women, according to data from the CDC. People between the ages of 45 and 50 experienced a higher death rate than any other age group, the data stated.

In one of its reports, the agency states that in 2012, 53 percent of all drug overdose deaths in our country were caused by drugs that were prescribed legally.

A major problem, according to many health officials, is the over-prescription and use of painkillers that contain potentially addictive narcotics. A growing number of medical experts believe that such pain killers should not be available to patients because of their potential for abuse.

Officials at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in Dallas describe the abuse of prescription drugs as a “major concern.” The federal officials are alarmed at the increase in the number of deaths caused by prescription drugs.

Throughout our state and our country, health care experts and patient advocate groups have demanded that doctors become more vigilant in prescribing pain relievers, suggesting that they not prescribe potentially addictive medications.

States such as Texas have gotten involved in the battle against addictive drugs and their overuse. The state has an online drug monitoring program that allows doctors and pharmacists to view the drug histories of their patients. The program has helped to curve some abuse.

Many of us know people who are taking prescription drugs that are potentially addictive. In our homes and

in our neighborhoods we must increase awareness regarding the harm that can be caused by the improper use of these substances. We owe this much to those that are close to us, and to others who are members of our larger communities.

Holiday parties, sounds of merry music, festive foods and decorated homes are a welcome scene during the Christmas season, but for many, it can be a stark reality of the physical absence of a loved one due to death.

Statistics reveal that from Thanksgiving to New Years, the rate of suicide, homicide and other types of deaths peak to its’ highest.

It is the time of year where those who are spending their first holidays without that special loved one struggle the most.

The moment of comfort and consolation for families should not stop at the site of the interment, but there are stages and phases to grief, and the holiday season is a significant phase.

Over the 100 years of Black and Clark funeral home taking care of families with excellence, we know a little something about grief.

We would like to recommend some Holiday Grief Nuggets that can help you and your family continue to focus on the celebration of your loved one’s life, even during this difficult holiday season.

Keep the party going. As hard as it may be, keep the party going by remembering the special nuisances and uniqueness of the loved one who is physically not present

this Holiday Season. This is the time to create new memories so that the legacy of life lives on. Plan a special event where everyone brings a picture and tells their favorite story about them.

Keep your Faith strong. Write a special prayer acknowledging their legacy while having a candle lighting ceremony.

As a family, make a decision to worship together on a certain day. This is great way to keep children involved and understanding that Faith is an important part to the grieving process.

Keep the Legacy Alive. It is important to get input from family and friends so that everyone will feel included in celebrations.

Involve Children in service opportunities that their loved one was may have been passionate about. In lieu of shopping for gifts, consider giving legacy gifts to others.

Establish legacy traditions like serving at a homeless shelter, or donating coats to needy children and families in the name of your loved ones or by donating to another grieving family who may be in the beginning of the grief cycle.

This is also a very healthy way for children to learn to live a life of service while remaining connected to the legacy of their loved one.

At the end of the day, holidays can hurt – but if looked at from a perspective of faith, you will make it through.

Experts agree BudStraps keep

Earbuds conveniently hanging on

BudStraps, the innovative new way to keep earbuds in place, promises to put an end to Dangling Earbuds, a nuisance felt by athletes, parents, office workers, drivers, travelers and music-loving teens. And the experts seem to believe and endorse their claim that BudStraps actually work. Rachel Rothman, who controls product testing and personally decides who gets the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, gave her thumbs

up via Twitter, suggesting BudStraps as “an alternative to tangling headphones.” CW TV affiliate WCCB reviewed BudStraps on its morning show, saying that it works “…like croakies except for your earbuds,” “it’s comfortable”, and “if they fall out, they’re just right there [around your neck]”.

Even ABC TV star Josh Malina (Scandal, West Wing) tweeted to his 150k fans on Monday that “These things work great” after personally testing BudStraps. And that’s not all! Even Cycling’s top blog for new product reviews, BikeRumor.com, wrote a flattering review of BudStraps, and on Tuesday, November 25th, NBC’s Universal Sports will be giving 50 beanies to promote the campaign. They will be given to anyone who contributes more than $50 to BudStraps on Tuesday. www.Budstraps.com/Kickstarter

From cozy textiles to an innovative design, with the Peekaboos® Ponytail Hat they’ve thought of everything she needs to maximize her fun this winter. She’ll never compromise on fashion or function thanks to their patent pending design that incorporates a secret opening in every cap to accommodate her ponytail. Whether she lives to barrel down those powdered slopes or a snowy walk in the woods is more her pace, the Peekaboos® Ponytail Hat offers her the versatility she needs to seize the day. Their new Classic Cable design is the fresh reincarnation of the ubiquitous knit cap,

featuring a beautiful cable knit pattern in a myriad of fashion forward colors. Each cap is lined with a fleece comfort layer that provides her with ample warmth and a soft barrier between her skin and biting winds. Its claim to fame however lies in its two cleverly disguised openings, one high and one low, that can be used to keep her ponytails neatly elevated and out of the way. When paired with one of their Classic Cable, No-fuss Contour Cowl’s, she’ll be outfitted in effortless style. These matching cowls are crafted with a stretchy back for quick and easy changes, and are made from non-itch acrylic fibers that wrap her up in comfort and elegance. With these stylish staples by her side she can enjoy any activity without batting an eyelash. In 2003, founder Danica Leigl stumbled upon her first prototype while knitting between college classes. From that first cap sporting its accidental gap, she received countless requests from friends and fellow students, eventually leading to the formal creation of the brand in 2007. Armed with a proprietary pattern and patent pending design, Peekaboos® Ponytail Hats are making a name for themselves.www.ponytailhats.com

This year, give the gift of relief with the first easily accessible at home spinal alignment system from Kacelia. In America, it’s expected that over 31 million people have suffered from back pain at one time or another in their lives, making it likely that someone on this year’s holiday list is in need of an introduction to Kacelia. Developed by an established chiropractor, Kacelia’s Tru-Align Body System works safely and naturally to decompress

and reshape muscles and tissue in the comfort of one’s home. With just 20 minutes of use per day, friends and loved ones can be well on their way to kicking up their heels in the new year. The Tru-Align Body System helps relieve pain and improve posture, flexibility, and spinal alignment ranging from the groin all the way up to the neck and jaw. By targeting key points along the body, it creates a stable platform for gravity to gently yet effectively do its job. It all starts by mapping out the individual’s body shape and setting the pads in the correct positions. When lying on these pads face down the sacroiliac, spinal, shoulder, and TMJ joints are allowed to relax and find their natural shape. From headaches and pinched nerves to sciatica and pregnancy d i s c o m f o r t s ,

Kacelia has been clinically proven to bring relief to men and women of all ages. It’s not just another band aid when it comes to treating chronic pain. With consistent use it can be the gift that keeps on giving through the years. Evelyn Zuehlke-Haworth and her husband Kelly spent three years developing Kacelia, creating a resource that everyone, everywhere can utilize to develop strength, stability, and relief in their daily lives. For the past 30 years Evelyn has worked as a hands on chiropractor, and is now excited to offer those she can’t help in person with a holistic option for treating their pain at home. Each product is engineered under the supervision of healthcare professionals and composed of quality medical grade materials assembled in the USA.

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news

media and intellectuals around the country have given their

grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100

days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several

people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman EddieBernice Johnson

Grade:A“I am deeply impressed with the progress that

President Barack Obama has made during the first 100days of his administration. Already we are seeingevidence of the administration’s plan to dig our countryout of recession and develop long-term, sustainable pros-perity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to

repair our frayed alliances and restore ourinternational leadership.

Finally, the Obama adminis-tration’s code of ethicshas broughtmuch-neededtransparency andaccountability to theWhite House.

President Obamais delivering on thechange that hepromised.”

Senator Kay

“In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming accel-

eration of policies that will take America down the

wrong track. The administration has proposed

trillions of dollars in new spending, which will

result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply

raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am

very concerned aboutthe President’s intention toclose Guantanamo without aworkable plan to relocatedetainees. It is mysincere hope that, movingforward,

The propositionsare worded to prohibit thecity from acting on thesebefore stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen wouldlike the city to maintainthose powers, they are tovote NO and vice versa.

The holidays are here, which means that magical elves will bring goodies and unhealthy treats to the office. Cookies, candy, fresh-baked goods, chocolate, candy canes, and everything in-between. How do you resist temptation and not eat what you see in the break room when it’s there every day from now until New Year’s Eve? Follow these 10 simple tips to get through the holidays and still fit into your pants on New Year’s Day.

Move the goodies out of your line of vision. Whatever is in your line of vision, you will be more tempted to eat. Depending on your work situation and where your desk is located, can you move the candy bowl out of sight? Or at least out of arm’s length? Rather than the latest gift basket sitting front and center on the conference room table, can it be put in the refrigerator or behind a closed cupboard? Ask your coworkers and see what makes sense. Chances are they don’t want to overindulge either and will appreciate someone taking action.

Don’t skip meals. When a person’s blood sugar drops, sweets and other goodies look the most tempting. The body is looking for quick energy in the form of sugar because it can process it the fastest. Low blood sugar usually happens if a person skips meals or waits too long between meals to eat. If you make a point to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and healthy snacks in-between, then you’ll be able to maintain more constant blood sugar levels and you won’t be as tempted by the sweets.

Bring healthy snacks to work. Being prepared is everything when it comes to maintaining your waistline. The easiest way to be prepared at the office is to have healthy snacks on hand! Aim for unsalted or raw nuts, fruit, hummus and veggies, healthy protein bars, string cheese, or even a sliced apple with a tablespoon of organic peanut butter or almond butter. Yum!

Drink water before you head to the cookie table. Sometimes if a person feels hungry, they’re actually thirsty. If the cookies are calling your name, drink a glass of water first and see how you feel. If afterwards they’re still calling your name, have just ½ or 1 cookie to get the craving out of the way and call it a day.

Brush your teeth. Sometimes we crave something just to change the taste in our mouth. Bring a toothbrush and toothpaste to work and keep in in your purse or in your desk drawer. Brush your teeth after lunch or whenever you feel you need a little refresher, and you’ll crave less unhealthy treats. Plus, who wants to put sugary food on freshly cleaned teeth?

If you need to give in to a craving, just have one. We all have cravings and sometimes those cravings mean something. For example, cravings for sweets can sometimes be because a person didn’t get enough sleep, they haven’t eaten enough protein, or they’ve waited too long in-between meals. Sometimes we crave something because of the nostalgia of it. For me, it’s eating peanut butter blossoms at Christmastime as a kid with the Hershey’s kiss in the center.

If you are craving a holiday treat, first take a moment to think of why? Are you truly hungry? Or did you skip lunch, so the brownies in the conference room seem extra tempting? Then if you are still craving it, have just one to satisfy the craving. Usually the 2nd or 3rd brownie, cookie or piece of candy isn’t nearly as satisfying as the first one, so just stick to one and leave the rest alone.

Give food away. Just because goodie baskets show up at the office doesn’t mean they need to stay there. Walk around to the coworkers and see if anyone would like to take some food home with them!

Count it. One of the easiest ways to maintain your waistline during the holidays is to track what you eat. There are many apps now available, or you can just use a good ol’ pen and a piece of paper. If you write down everything you eat or drink and see that you have room in your calorie range for a little treat, then have it and enjoy it!

Keep up your exercise routine. Burning more calories than you eat is essential to keep a healthy waistline. Aim to fit in 30 minutes of exercise a day, even if it’s broken up into 15 minute increments. Also, with exercise, it’s important to do what you enjoy! That’s the best way you’ll stick to it. So, decide if you like to walk by yourself, with a buddy, take a class, workout at home, or use an exercise DVD.

Have an accountability partner. An accountability partner could be in the form of an app that helps you track your food an exercise, a family or friend, or even a health coach, nutritionist or personal trainer. If you have someone or something to report to, you are less likely to indulge.

Parkland providers treat hundreds with shingles

each yearTake a look at the people around you. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly one in every three people in the United States will develop shingles in their lifetime and an estimated 1 million cases are diagnosed in this country every year. That means you, or someone next to you, could be at risk. In fiscal year 2013 providers at Parkland Health & Hospital System treated 573 patients suffering from shingles which is caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays dormant in the body and for reasons that are not fully known, the virus can reactivate later, causing shingles. Shingles is a painful rash that develops on one side of the face or body. The rash forms blisters that typically scab over in seven to 10 days and clear up within two to four weeks. Before the rash develops, people often have pain, itching, or tingling in the area where the rash will develop. This may happen anywhere from one to five days before the rash appears. “I’ve seen the commercials describing the pain associated with shingles, but didn’t give it a second thought until I was diagnosed with shingles,” said Cassandra Christopher, an HR Business Partner in Parkland’s Office of Talent Management. “The pain was excruciating. It’s not something I’d wish on anyone.” Most commonly, the rash occurs in a shingle stripe around either the left or the right side of the body. In other cases, the rash occurs on one side of the face. In rare cases (usually among people with weakened immune systems), the rash may be more widespread and look similar to a chickenpox rash, according to the CDC. “Shingles have been around for a number of years but with the increased publicity, people are becoming more aware of the virus,” said Noel Santini, MD, Medical Director for Parkland’s network of Community Oriented Primary Care health centers. “There are several antiviral medicines to treat shingles that will help shorten the length and severity of the illness. But to be effective, they must be started as soon as the rash appears. “People who have or think they might have shingles should call their healthcare provider as soon as possible to discuss treatment options,” Dr. Santini added. The only way to reduce the risk of developing shingles and the long-term pain is to get vaccinated. The CDC recommends that people aged 60 years and older get one dose of the shingles vaccine. People seeking the shingles vaccine are advised to call their neighborhood pharmacy or physician office and ask about its availability. Shingles cannot be passed from one person to another; however, the virus that causes shingles can be spread from a person with active shingles to another person who has never had chickenpox. In such cases, the person exposed to the virus might develop chickenpox, but they would not develop shingles. A person with active shingles can spread the virus when the rash is in the blister-phase. A person is not infectious before the blisters appear. Once the rash has developed crusts, the person is no longer contagious, Dr. Santini said. If you have shingles, Dr. Santini advises to keep the rash covered, avoid touching or scratching the rash and wash your hands often to prevent the spread of the virus. Until the rash has developed crusts, avoid contact with pregnant women who have never had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine; premature or low birth weight infants; and people with weakened immune systems such as people undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, and people with HIV. “I never realized how many people I know were diagnosed with shingles until I was,” Christopher said. “I know my chances of contracting them again are low, but after suffering through a first round I hope there’s never a second.” For more information about shingles, visit www.cdc.gov

Dear Alma,I have been with this person for six years, and we’ve had our up and downs, like any relationship. We are living apart but he still wants us to keep our friendship. I don’t, because he needs to get himself together financially and mentally. Basically, I feel if someone truly loves you, they will do whatever it takes to be with the person. He’s just not moving fast enough for me. I do love him and want to be with him, but I can’t wait any longer. Now my problem is trying to move on and forget him. What’s the best way to handle this?

Name withheld

Dear Nameless,Six is the magic number. So you’ve been with him for six years. You guys don’t live together; you aren’t engaged, and he needs to get it together. He wants to continue a “friendship,” but you want more, and since he hasn’t obliged, you’re ready to move on.First, I applaud you for making the decision to break it off, redefine, redirect and find your joy. Some people stay in an unfulfilled relationship for the sake of being in a relationship, and that’s never a healthy decision. Truth be told, let’s give him credit; a friendship is all that he wants, and a friendship is all that he has to offer – to you. You, on the other hand, have decided that’s not enough, and that’s ok. You know you better than anyone else. By making the decision to break it off and move on in your mind, all you need now is for your heart to catch on. That ol’ heart always takes a little more time with this sorta thing, doesn’t it?While working through the heartache, keep in mind – after a break-up, we think…and ponder…and reminisce…about how we wish it could have been. I call that the coulda, shoulda, woulda stage. Since you will be thinking about it, for a little while anyway, put yourself on the path of thinking about the real deal of what’s been happening for the past six years. Even if you have to write it down. That way, you can recall and reread what really happened and how it made you feel. Now, the next step toward moving on – take the time to refuel. I’d suggest focusing on what brings you strength. If there’s a particular minister or motivational speaker you like, listen to them, every day. If you like to walk, run, dance, workout, swim, do that for yourself – every day – or as much as you can. Download your best pick-me-up songs on your iPod, and listen to them. Hum along and take it all in.Let’s imagine you’re preparing to take a long road trip. Close your eyes, see yourself at a gas station; you’re filling up your tank – a red sports car, I hope, LOL. Do the same for your heart – refuel. Keep busy, find a new hobby. How about volunteering at church, with the elderly, a charity, or with kids? Take the focus off him and focus on you. Use this time to allow yourself to work on being the best person you can be, who without a doubt is taking the time to live her life to the fullest. You can do it!

In the spirit of the times, I was wondering about what it really means to have a personal relationship with God, the operative word being personal. I’m learning that as one starts his or her journey towards the Almighty, it becomes more and more obvious that when you get to the inevitable fork in the road, which path you take is a matter of choice, not circumstance, not fate and certainly not an accident.

Once you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, what’s in your heart takes priority over what’s in your mind and certainly what comes out of your mouth! When faith takes over, the claim of ignorance as defense for unholy actions, unholy practices and hypocritical conduct fall by the wayside. The proof is in the heart.

Like the child who responds in silence to the parent, who states, “I know you know

the difference between right and wrong, or, I know you know, you weren’t raised that way,” the silent child knows in his or her heart that their parent is correct. No answer is the answer. And I believe so it is with God. No matter the situation or the circumstance, when you acknowledge God, you can no longer use the excuses that you didn’t know, or you didn’t have control or, well, after all it was an accident. This is God we’re talking about and it’s your heart He’s talking to. You can deny it if you want to but no answer is an answer and no decision is a decision. Faith in the face of temptation does not automatically mean we’ll always make the right choices or decisions. As a matter of fact, more often than not, we’ll let God down as well as ourselves. A true understanding of faith however, will not allow you to stay down. Through faith and a personal relationship with God, each of us can get up and try again. We can even go back to that fork in the road and make that right when we previously made the wrong left. It’s called try again. Personal relationships allow you to make mistakes and realize that

relationship lets others know, what you did is real. You did it. You said it. But what your heart says or meant, is understood. You don’t get a pass. But you do get the benefit of the doubt.

You see this personal relationship makes you aware somehow of the distance between you and God, much like the distance between you and a loved one. Time and distance are supposed to make the heart grow fonder. In this case, time and distance bring no peace and no satisfaction. For a true believer, one recognizes if God ain’t happy, you ain’t happy. Until you know the source of this angst and this anxiety, the choices you make will continue to be wrong. When you submit to the will of God, I promise you’ll begin to see the path that God has laid out for you. Hence, when you choose incorrectly, it’ll become obvious that you’re headed in the wrong direction. You’ll understand God hasn’t moved. You have.

“Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never counts against him.” Romans 4:7-8.

Is this possible? I understand it is if I can just get to, “…circumcision of the heart by the (Holy) Spirit…” Romans 2:29. All things are possible to those who love the Lord. Again, as the child who knows he or she has disappointed a loving parent, there is no joy until the relationship is again put back in balance. Or, the couple who realizes anger and argument cannot last forever and must be resolved in order to find conjugal peace. Walk with God. Better yet simply attempt to walk with God and trust me, you’ll know when you’re out of step. You’ll feel it. It will make you stop and think. You will not have peace and we all know what it does to you when you don’t have peace where and with whom it counts the most. However, being in right relationship allows you to make the first move. It’s called humility in the face of being right and wrong. I guess what I’m saying is when you know you’re wrong, if you take the first step by reaching out your hand for forgiveness, God will show you He’s still there. In fact, He was there before you ever moved your hand.

May God bless and keep you forever.

GOD GIVES US GREAT CALM Sometimes God calms the storm. Other times God calm his child. Which will God have to do for you today? And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, sleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, care thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them; why are ye fearful? How is it that ye have NO faith? (Mark 4:37-40) And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. And behold there arose a great tempest in the sea, so much that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying Lord save us: we perish. And he said unto them why or you so fearful? O ye of little faith. Then he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marveled, saying, what manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him! (Matthew 8:23-27) For Thought: Sometimes we are like the disciples; we don’t recognize who is in the ship with us. Are maybe we forget who is in the ship with us. The believer needs to remember who is in the ship with him at all times. Notice how Jesus spoke to the storm once and it obeyed. Jesus sometimes has to speak to man more than once to get him to obey. Thank God for mercy. Amen. Abraham was fully persuaded who was with him. (Roman 4:17-21) my question today is you fully per-suaded who is with you at all times. Paul was also persuaded (Roman 8:35-39) Paul was persuaded and convinced nothing in his past or present life would separate him from the love of God. When you are convinced of who is in the ship with you worry will be in your of the past. You want worry about tomorrow anymore. (Matthew 6:25-34) When you are absolutely convinced you will give it to God; you will learn to rest and trust God with all that concerns you. (Matthew 11:28-30)
