•
The 11th World Wilderness Congress (WILD11) follows a tradition of state-of-the-art science, new technologies, the best global policies & culturally diverse programme presentations
The WILD11 programme is structured through concurrent training and capacity-building sessions, plenary keynotes and moderated discussions, and the experience of a wide range of business, cultural and educational matters in the WILD Expo
• It addresses current issues of regional and global importance, focusing on positive and inspiring solutions
At WILD11, the international stream will focus on practical measures for achieving the protection of at least half of Earth’s land and seas (Nature Needs Half) for the benefit of all people and the survival of all life on earth. While, the regional stream will emphasize the importance of community-owned, community-operated conservation sites for the preservation and restoration of wild nature
WHY INDIA?India’s innovative restoration and rewilding of wildlands is exemplar of the leadership needed in the coming years to save Earth’s climate & end extinction.
BRICS COUNTRYIndia is among the strategically important BRICS (Brazil, Russia,
India, China, & South Africa), necessary partners in the push
to save life on Earth

challenging conservation issues (climate & habitat loss), Indian conservationists can offer and
gain much from WILD11
WHY JAIPUR?• The 11th World Wilderness Congress (WILD11) will be
hosted by the cultural capital of India, Jaipur
• The capital of Rajasthan and the most recent addition to the UNESCO World Heritage site list
• Jaipur is an amalgamation of living and intangible heritage, with forts, palaces, markets and step-wells that have their origin in the royal patronage bestowed upon artisans centuries ago
• In the heart of Jaipur lies the Jhalana Leopard Conservation Reserve. It is India’s first ever ‘Leopard Reserve’, spread over an area of more than 20 square kilometers

11th World Wilderness Congress Nature-based Solutions for Life,
Livelihoods and Love
OBJECTIVES• Promote the Global Deal for Nature and "Nature Needs Half" world
through protection, restoration and rewilding while meeting the needs of human communities
• Build partnerships between traditional, modern and indigenous communities; blend indigenous and modern approaches to nature conservation and create community-based nature conservancies
• Enhance urban wildness; counter wildlife trafficking and poaching; protect natural heritage sites in India and the world; develop and announce new nature-based business solutions and innovative conservation finance mechanisms
• Counter the effects of climate change and global warming; work towards re-wilding based on the policy of “Nature Needs Half”, solutions towards purer air and cleaner water
• Provide special attention to primary forests, all high-functioning nature on land and sea, natural World Heritage and other ways to make the world a wilder and better place for all life
WILD11’s global program will amplify urgent calls to protect half the planet with the following activities:
• Launch a BRICS-based (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) leadership committee and in-country social movements to influence policy agendas in some of the world’s largest and most biodiverse countries
• Initiate a Call for Action and outreach initiative – the Global Deal for Nature, outline the interdependency of biodiversity and climate and the role nature-based solutions can play to prevent a runaway crisis
• Start “The Survival Challenge” – A formal declaration signed by leaders from all sectors of society and all corners of the planet, calling for the United Nations to end the Sixth Extinction by protecting half of Earth, outline what is expected from the world’s leaders
• Start a “Global Charter for Rewilding” that leads towards the UN Decade of Restoration starting in 2020
WILD10 (2013) REWILDING EUROPE: Restoring wilderness restores the balance of life By taking on the issue of “Rewilding Europe,” WILD10 placed the restoration of Europe’s wildlands on the public and institutional agenda, starting a necessary movement that has since seen the return of the wolf to all European countries
WILD9 (2009) CONTINENTAL PROTECTIONS: The North American Wilderness and Protected Area Agreement The natural boundaries of wildlands do not fall easily within political borders. Many species migrate across continents – effectively protecting them requires coordination across national boundaries. This is the rationale behind the North American Wilderness and Protected Area Agreement, (NAWPA)
WILD6 (1998) ASIAN WILDERNESS: Introducing the wilderness idea to Asia Elevated wilderness in the institutional agendas of Asian land management agencies, introducing the concept of “protected wilderness status” – places where nature is left alone to fulfill its destiny
WILD4 (1987) The first Global Inventory of Wilderness; promoting a World Conservation Bank that became the Global Environment Facility (GEF) of the World bank
ACHIEVEMENTS
Community Based Conservation
• Community Owned Community Operated Nature Conservancies (COCOON)
• 11th WORLD WILDERNESS CONGRESS will provide a global platform to share and spread the COCOON example for nature and local communities
• The future of global wilderness, re-wilding, sustainable Eco-wilderness tourism, community partnerships and growth
• Communities for Nature & Nature for Communities
• Under the leadership of Mr Sunil Mehta ( Managing Director Hon for India, WILD11) and Mr Roheet Karoo ( Hon. WildLife Warden- Umred- Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary) two successful COCOON Conservancies are underway at Village Alijhanjha at Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve and at Village Gothangaon at Umred-Karhandla. Wildlife Sanctuary (Both in the State of Maharashtra) bringing over 100s of acres of land for re-wilding in partnerships with the local communities.
• For the implementation of the aims and objectives of the 11th World Wilderness Congress in India , a Trust under the title “World Wilderness Congress Trust India” has been formed, which will continue the work in India post the 11th WWC.
It is essential to empower and uplift local communities through nature conservation, and the WILD11 programme will showcase many examples from around the world, including a unique new model from India:
• It’s objective is to secure water and food security of some of India's largest urban centres and their hinterlands through natural biodiversity regeneration, creation of micro-forests and by protecting and expanding open spaces
• There is now clear scientific evidence that several Indian cities will reach the zero watermark in the near future
• The only way to avoid this catastrophe would be to counter the worst impacts of climate change by greening the cities in ways that enhance biodiversity which will recharge the aquifers
• Wild Cities aim is to preserve and restore urban wildness
• To counter the urban ill- effects of climate change, global warming and for restoring the urban underground aquifers
• To showcase and celebrate the success stories of cities that have preserved and sustained their urban wildness and reduced their urban carbon footprint
