FROM THE RECTOR 11 May 2014 Dear Friends, The gospel of Christ calls us to a mature and responsible way of life, which has nothing immature or conformist about it. In this present age, when authority is weakened and discredited, when passing fads

beguile, when propaganda deceives, Jesus puts us on our feet, so that we can journey with him to the Father. No one goes to the Father except through Jesus (Jn 14:6). ‘When Christ freed us, he meant us to remain free’ (Gal 5:1). Many thanks for all who contributed to the success of our Organ Celebration Weekend. It was a great success and time of blessing. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers worshipping at St John’s today!

Baptism: We welcome Keira Collins into the family of the Church through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at 2:30pm today. Please pray for Keira and her parents and godparents, as they rejoice in sharing with us the Christian faith. Baptism Enrolment: At the 10:00am Family Eucharist, James Horsley and Penelope Bolger will be enrolled for Holy Baptism. Please pray for James and Penelope as their families and godparents prepare for this Sacrament. Amnesty International: Letter writing will be conducted today after each morning service with Neridah Byrne. It will address the situation of a student banned from pursuing higher education and now sentenced, following confession under duress, and without urgent medical treatment, to seven years in prison on charges apparently related to peaceful activism (also known as “spreading propaganda against the system” and “assembly and collusion against national security”). For more information please speak today with Neridah, who reports that ACT for Peace has written thanking the parish for supporting the petition to governments urging peace efforts for Syria.

Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: "The anthem this morning is the traditional Easter Carol, ‘Now the green blade riseth’, which contrasts the story of the resurrection with the new life found in nature found at Spring. The voluntary is ‘Intrada’, by Grayston Ives (b. 1948), former Informatum Christorim at Magdalene College, Oxford and a prolific choral composer. At evensong tonight the canticles are the fauxbourdon settings by the English Tudor composer, Thomas Morley, and the anthem is by contemporary Australian composer, Colin Brumby."

St John’s Film Group meets on Friday 16 May, 7:00pm to view ‘Amazing Grace,’ about the incredible true story of William Wilberforce, who tirelessly led the campaign to abolish slavery in Britain. When the slave trade was not only perceived as acceptable but as necessary for the economy, Wilberforce, with fellow abolitionists, dared to speak out, fighting long and hard for the freedom of others. In his words, "you may choose to look the other way but you can never again say you did not know" (William Wilberforce, 1789). All welcome. For information please speak with Valda Ashover (9971 7997) and note revised date. Mothers’ Union (MU): The next meeting is on Wednesday 21 May following the 10:00am Eucharist and a cuppa, for lunch at Dee Why RSL. All Welcome! For information, please speak with Deacon Sandra or Margaret Winters. From the Director of Music: "Last week's organ celebration was a great success and I would like to thank all – clergy, choir, servers, welcomers, caterers and congregation – who helped make it such a memorable and exciting weekend. St John's is a place where exciting musical things are happening and your support and appreciation is invaluable. Thank you. Tom" Happy Birthday to Eric Hastings (11th), Katie Garman (12th)

Fellowship at St John’s (Focus on Women and Family Life) St John’s has several Christian fellowship groups focusing specially on women and family life. o They provide within their programs scope for fun and fellowship, spiritual and

personal growth, intellectual stimulation, friendship, discussion, sharing of ideas and experiences.

o They are open and welcoming to new members (who do not necessarily have to belong to the Church).

o They seek to share Christ's love by encouraging, strengthening and supporting marriage and family life.

Mothers’  Union    “MU Australia” was known for most of its history as the Mothers' Union and is part of a worldwide movement, established by Mary Sumner in England in 1876, within the Anglican Church. The movement sought to unite mothers in prayer, fellowship and example in the discharge of their great family responsibilities. Apart from Christian outreach, MU has been involved in a wide range of social and political reform activities, mostly relating to the welfare of vulnerable groups and in support of charitable work. The St John’s MU Branch usually meets at 11:20am on the third Wednesday of the month after the Wednesday morning Eucharist. Caritas    Caritas is part of MU Australia. It was originally known as “Young Wives” and is less structured than MU. CARITAS, meaning “Christian Love for Others”, has the motto: “Friendship in Action”. In Caritas, people find an unconditional hand of friendship and a warm caring welcome. Caritas usually meets at 7:30pm on the first Monday of the month. All  welcome    Both MU and Caritas welcome everyone into membership. You don't have to be married or a mother or even a woman! There are many male members of MU throughout Australia and worldwide, though at present we don't have any here. For information on these groups, please see the weekly pew sheet for the week before each meeting or speak with Deacon Sandra. Other  Activities    Other regular activities also provide a focus of fellowship for Women and Family Life, for example in: o Children’s ministries – Playtime, Godly Play In addition to their own programs, members of both MU and Caritas are deeply involved in the many other activities of the Parish, including: o Sunday worship – lessons and prayers, sidespeople, choir o Weekday worship, prayer and bible study o Hospitality, welcoming and reception – volunteers in the Café and Office and

supporting various events o Support – cleaning the church, brass o St John’s Op Shop and fundraising
