Today’s reading offers significant message: Using the text from Isaiah, Jesus outlined his agenda as one which

attended to the real needs of people with God’s liberating power. His followers must be willing to do the same.

The prophets confronted the ills of their day with the light of truth, and often were rejected for it. Jesus would meet the same rejection. His followers must likewise be willing to do the same.

Christians know that God speaks to us sometimes in the unlikely people and events that we might take for granted. We must also realize that Jesus is more than anyone of us thinks he is. We must be willing to be shocked, unsettled, surprised, confronted, and changed by him. We should not think that we have ‘figured him out’ and somehow ‘get used to him’.

La lectura de hoy nos presenta una idea importante: Usando el texto de Isaías, Jesús subrayo su agenda como una que atiende,

con el poder liberador de Dios, a las verdaderas necesidades de las personas. Sus seguidores tienen que estar dispuestos a hacer lo mismo.

Los profetas confrontaban los males de sus días con la luz de la verdad, y frecuentemente fueron rechazados por hacerlo. Jesús recibió el mismo rechazo. Sus seguidores también deben de estar dispuestos a hacer lo mismo.

Los Cristianos están consientes de que algunas veces Dios nos habla por medio de personas y eventos que no nos imaginamos y que pasamos por alto. Debemos estar también consientes de que Jesús es mas de los cualquiera de nosotros pensamos de él. Debemos estar dispuestos a ser sorprendidos, confrontados, y cambiados por él. No debemos de pensar que lo „hemos comprendido‟ y así actuar como si estuviésemos “acostúmbranos” a él.

Brief commentary

Jesus began speaking in the synagogue, saying: “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” He said to them, “Surely you will quote me this proverb, ‘Physician, cure yourself,’ and say, ‘Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.’” And he said, “Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. But Jesus passed through the midst of them and went away.

Today’s Sunday gospel from Luke continues the dramatic scene from last week. Jesus, “returned to Galilee [after his baptism] in the power of the Spirit,” and there, with his stirring message of the coming reign of God and his powerful healings, he began a public ministry that galvanized crowds and roused a following. Coming to his hometown of Nazareth he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, “as was his custom,” and read a text from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah which he presented as the agenda of his mission: ‘bring liberty to the captives, sight to the blind, release to the oppressed, announce the good news to the poor, and proclaim the time of God’s favor’. Jesus’ commentary on the passage is summed up in Luke’s gospel by one simple but stark announcement: “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” To his audience his claim could have only meant that Jesus attributed to himself the role of inaugurating the kingdom of God, the role of messiah. He receives a mixed response of praise, incredulity, and finally rejection. In addition, he announces that his mission will extend to foreigners, just as the prophets Elijah and Elisha had done in ancient Israel. Moreover, Jesus claimed that it would be foreigners – the unlikely – like the widow in Zarephath and like Naaman of Syria, who would accept and respond to his message; while ironically his own would fail to recognize him. Prophets, like Jeremiah, were usually not welcomed. Jesus would meet the same fate as the prophets of old, rejection from his own people. It has been said that “the prophets comforted the afflicted and afflicted the comfortable,” and they ‘announced’ God’s will, which often involved ‘denouncing’ what is contrary to God’s will. By witnessing to God’s thoughts, emotions and desires, the prophets often collided with the status quo, questioned the assumptions, values and beliefs of their generation, and exposed the conduct of their society. Like lights shining on eyes accustomed to the darkness of ignorance, sin and error, the typical initial reaction was to reject them. Jesus’ townspeople could not accept that someone so close – and seemingly so well known to them – could ever make such bold claims, particularly since Nazareth itself was a humble little hamlet. As the saying goes, ‘familiarity breeds contempt’. Yet, sometimes God speaks to us through the ordinary people and daily events that we take for granted. Indeed, the great surprise of the Christian movement is that, although it became the most influential faith on Earth, its beginnings were surprisingly humble. Jesus, who would die by crucifixion, was by the estimation of his contemporaries a truly unlikely figure to ignite such worldwide impact and change. And yet he did.

En aquel tiempo, comenzó Jesús a decir en la sinagoga: “Hoy se cumple esta Escritura que acabáis de oír.” Y todos le expresaban su aprobación y se admiraban de las palabras de gracia que salían de sus labios. Os garantizo que en Israel habla muchas viudas en tiempos de Elías, cuando estuvo cerrado el cielo tres años y seis meses, y hubo una gran hambre en todo el país; sin embargo, a ninguna de ellas fue enviado Elías, a una viuda de Sarepta, en el territorio de Sidón. Jesús “regreso a Galilea [siguiendo su bautismo] en el poder del Espíritu,” y allí, con su mensaje conmovedor del reino inminente de Dios y con sus poderosos milagros, comienza su ministerio publico que galvaniza a las multitudes y anima un seguimiento. Llegando a su pueblo nativo de Nazaret entro a la sinagoga en el Sábado, “como era su costumbre,” y leyó el texto del rollo del profeta Isaías que el presenta como la agenda de su misión: „traer la libertad a los cautivos, luz a los ciegos, desato de los oprimidos, anuncio de la buena nueva a los pobres, y proclamación del tiempo de gracia de Dios‟. El evangelio de Lucas suma los comentarios de Jesús sobre el pasaje en un simple, pero rematado, anuncio: “Hoy se cumple esta Escritura que acabáis de oír.” Para su audiencia su aserto pudo solamente representar que Jesús se atribuía al mismo el rol de inaugurar e l reino de Dios, el papel de mesías. El Año de la Misericordia y las puertas santas

Ya llevamos cerca de dos meses desde el comienzo del Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, cuando el Papa Francisco abrió la Puerta Santa de la Basílica de San Pedro, y me pregunto, ¿hemos ya atravesado la Puerta Santa?

Y más aún me pregunto, ¿cuantos de mis lectores entenderán la profundidad de mi pregunta? Ante todo, ¿de qué puerta santa estoy hablando? No me refiero necesariamente a la Puerta Santa de ninguna de las grandes basílicas romanas ni a ninguna de las miles de puertas santas designadas a través del orbe por los distintos ordinarios de cada iglesia particular.

Me refiero a la gran puerta santa de nuestros corazones. Esa puerta que, como puerta al fin y al cabo, tiene dos fines: uno es para entrar y otro es para salir. A diferencia de una ventana que se abre para contemplar el mundo que pasa por frente de nuestra casa, la puerta es para salir o para entrar.

Nuestro corazón tiene que ser la puerta que se abre a la misericordia de Dios para que ella entre dentro de nosotros. Y también se abre para que de nuestro corazón salga esa misma misericordia para los que nos rodean, especialmente los más necesitados y abandonados, los alejados, los pecadores, los que no son “buenos” como nosotros nos creemos ser.

Mucho se habla estos días de ganar las indulgencias jubilares, de peregrinaciones, de novenas y rezos, pero el Año de la Misericordia, además de todo eso, es principalmente el ser misericordioso en forma real y práctica todos los días en el trato con los demás, en el realizar con diligencia y cotidianamente las obras de misericordia.

Desempolvemos nuestros viejos catecismos y recordemos: Obras Corporales de Misericordia

1. Dar de comer al hambriento 2. Dar de beber al sediento 3. Dar posada al necesitado 4. Vestir al desnudo 5. Visitar al enfermo 6. Socorrer a los presos 7. Enterrar a los muertos

Obras Espirituales de Misericordia 1. Enseñar al que no sabe 2. Dar buen consejo al que lo necesita 3. Corregir al que está en error 4. Perdonar las ofensas 5. Consolar al triste 6. Sufrir con paciencia los defectos de los demás 7. Rogar a Dios por vivos y difuntos

¿Sabían ustedes que el Papa Francisco en su bula sobre el Jubileo de la Misericordia nos habla de conseguir las indulgencias practicando estas obras de misericordia? Y esto se puede hacer sin gastos de aviones y hoteles.

Pienso que primero debo hacer las obras de misericordia y después las peregrinaciones. ¿Por qué? Porque para mí es más sabroso darme un viajecito a Roma que tener que meterme una tarde en un hospital visitando un enfermo. Y generalmente lo que yo prefiero no es necesariamente lo mejor que Dios quiere que yo haga.

The Year of Mercy and Holy Doors

It’s been nearly two months since the beginning of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, when Pope Francis opened the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica, and I wonder: Have we already crossed through the Holy Door?

And yet, I wonder how many of my readers will understand the depth of my question? Above all, what holy door am I talking about? I do not necessarily mean the Holy Door of any of the great Roman basilicas or any of the thousands of holy doors across the globe designated by the various ordinaries of each particular church.

I mean the holy door of our hearts. The one that, as a door after all, has two purposes: one is to enter and another to exit. Unlike a window that opens to allow us to look at the world passing by in front of our house, the door allows for leaving and entering.

Our hearts have to be the doors that open to God's mercy so it can enter inside us. And then they must open, so that same mercy goes out from our hearts to those around us, especially the neediest and abandoned, the distant, the sinners, those who are not as "good" as we think we are.

There is much talk these days of obtaining the Jubilee indulgences, of pilgrimages, novenas and prayers, but besides all that, the Year of Mercy mainly calls us to be really and practically merciful every day in dealing with others, in practicing daily and diligently the works of mercy.

Let’s blow the dust off our old catechisms and remember: Corporal Works of Mercy

1. Feed the hungry 2. Give drink to the thirsty 3. Shelter the homeless 4. Clothe the naked 5. Visit the sick 6. Visit the imprisoned 7. Bury the dead

Spiritual Works of Mercy 1. Instruct the ignorant 2. Counsel the doubtful 3. Admonish sinners 4. Forgive offenses 5. Comfort the afflicted 6. Bear wrongs patiently 7. Pray for the living and the dead

Did you know that in his Bull for the Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis speaks of obtaining indulgences while practicing these works of mercy? And this can be done without spending on airfares and hotels.

I think that we have to do the works of mercy first and then make the pilgrimages. Why? Because it is more pleasant for me to make a trip to Rome than to spend an afternoon at a hospital visiting a patient. And generally what I would like to do is not necessarily the best thing that God wants me to do.

Un lugar al que la gente acude en sus momentos de necesidad. Todos somos instrumentos de la misericordia y la paz de Dios. Nuestra iglesia, nuestra familia, unidas para ayudar a los necesitados.

¡Gracias a todos los que ya han respondido generosamente al ABCD de este año! Su apoyo fortalece los ministerios que sirven a nuestra Arquidiócesis y permiten a la Iglesia formar nuevos discípulos. Como las Escrituras nos recuerdan, Den y recibirán. Su prójimo necesita de usted. Usted es la respuesta a las oraciones de alguien, y juntos, estamos transformando vidas.
