Saint Joseph Church Mission Statement

We have been called together as disciples of the Lord as St. Joseph Parish. We are united with brothers and sisters far and near in the

message and mission of Jesus Christ. As a parish family we will witness to God’s love and presence through our celebration of the sacraments, the proclamation of

God’s Word , the formation of all into discipleship and our service to others.

We are a people who are deeply Eucharistic which strengthens us for the mission that has been entrusted to us. We will use all of the God-given gifts to show that we are eager to welcome the

stranger, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and comfort the bereaved.

October 22 - Feast of St. John Paul II Facts You Didn’t Know About JPII!

JPII received his call to the priesthood when he once accidentally “caught” his father praying alone during the night on his knees. He visited 129 nations during his pontificate, the most of any Pope! 1995 World Youth Day in the Philippines - est. 5 MILLION people attended a Holy Mass that His Holiness celebrated. This was the largest human gathering in recorded history!

If you can’t pray a whole Rosary at once, break it into parts.

Use each mystery to ask for a particular intention

Pray while you walk and think of the people in your life

If you’re upset, pray for the situation that worries you

Use images & music. The rosary is a contemplative prayer

Recite the Rosary while doing chores or while you work out

Say it while you wait (for example, at the bus stop)

Carry a Rosary in your pocket

Fall asleep praying the Rosary. Better than counting sheep!

Say it in moments of sadness or spiritual drought

TOO MUCH INFORMATION! There is a common expression: “Too much information!” We usually use it when people tell us de-tails about their lives that we don’t want or need to know. Today, when James and John ask Jesus a simple question, making their request for places of honor in the kingdom, a simple answer might have been in order. In-stead, as he often does, Jesus answers a question with a question; today it’s about drinking the cup of suffering. Then, once the others are indignant over James and John’s outrageous request, he proceeds to give them what may have been “too much information” for follow-ers who were simply interested in the pursuit of glory. But this information, though it can sometimes seem “too much” for us, is essential for our lives as disciples. In Isaiah, in Hebrews, and in Mark today, we learn this in-formation. It is in suffering, in weakness, in self-giving service to others, that we come to understand the king-dom. It is the information we need to find our place and come to be honored in the reign of God.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — My servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear (Isaiah 53:10-11). Psalm — Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading — Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help (Hebrews 4:14-16). Gospel — Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all (Mark 10:35-45 [42-45]).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As election campaigns move into high gear, sometimes the phrase “the Catholic vote” is heard. It’s an interesting concept, since Catholics started out in this country as a very fragile group: fewer than forty thousand of us at the time of the first census in 1790, and only about 2 percent of the population by 1830. It was a priestless church for all intents and purposes, lay-led clusters of Catholics waiting patiently for the occasional visit of a priest, sustained by gathering when they could on Sunday for devotional prayer like litanies and the rosary. They tried to hold on to their ancestral faith as best they could. Archbishop Jean-Louis Cheverus told one family in Maine to “every day say your prayers on your knees with affection, and every Sunday gather to hear the Gospel, to pray in common, and to quiz the children on the catechism.” Inevitably, some became Protestant, but many more stayed Catholic from generation to generation, with very little encouragement or sacramental ministry from the clergy. Archbishop John Carroll, the first American bishop, tried to make Church law flexible: shortening the length of the fast before Communion, easing the Lenten fast, and even relaxing the rule of Sabbath rest at harvest time. Catholicism in England had been quietly sustained in this way for two centuries, and the first American Catholics carried on as had their ancestors, providing a fertile soil for the unprecedented success and phenomenal growth of the Church in our country.

A NOTE FROM THE PARISH OFFICE: If you have moved or changed your phone number since registering with our parish, please let the rectory know so we can keep accurate records and get in touch with you when needed. Also, if you are not receiving envelopes and would like to, please call the rectory. Our number is 201-342-6300.

PASTOR’S DESK—ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR

Vigésimo Noveno Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In Mark’s gospel, he has a short description of the Last Supper, without the washing of the disciples’ feet found in the gospel of John. Today’s passage has a similar message. While James and John seem to be close friends of Jesus, they obviously have not learned what it means to follow him. But they think this is the time to ask for their share in the glory of Jesus’ Kingdom. Jesus doesn’t make any promises of worldly glory, but he does promise a share in his suffering. When he goes on to remind them of how Gentiles rule over peo-ple, they probably thought he was going to let them do the same. Imagine their surprise when he told them that the greatest of them would be the ones who served the rest. They still did not understand that Jesus had to suffer and die to complete his life mission. They probably did not know what Jesus meant about their being baptized in death as Jesus would, But then how many people today know that leadership is a form of service? Whether you are head of a family, or of a nation, you were given that authority by God. And God expects leaders to not only direct those under them, but inspire and encourage them to do better. Parents do more than correct their children: They also guide them, love them, protect them, and sometimes even let them learn from their mistakes. This connection of leadership and service is all inclusive. A manager is called to help his employees do their jobs better, not by badgering, but by giving the support they need. Government leaders are called to serve all constituents, not just the ones who donate to their election fund. Military leaders must support their troops with respect as well as discipline. God calls Church leaders in a special way to service of their flock: to protect the weakest members, to give an example of Jesus’ love to all, and to be open to the movement of the Holy Spirit in both clergy and laity. Anyone who lives a life of loving service can be “greatest” in the Kingdom of God.
