168th Annual Communication, October 13-15, 2017 @ San Francisco Three hundred years ago, foundations were laid that would inspire and unite generations of gentlemen - foundations that continue to be built upon today. Important as ever, the Annual Communication serves as a way to unite, both in spirit and purpose. It's an opportunity to learn to be a better leader for your lodge; to recognize the accomplishments of our peers; to salute the grand master and welcome the new one. It's a time to honor the bonds formed between brothers. But during this 300th year of Freemasonry, it's different. It's your once-in-a-lifetime chance to truly celebrate all of it-to reflect on the last 300 years as you look to the future. Make plans to join in the celebration today. Here's to year 301st !!!
Should Right Worshipful Bruce R. Galloway, Deputy Grand Master, be elected and installed as Grand Master at Annual Communication it will be his distinct honor to appoint Worshipful Brother Nathaniel M. Torres, member by appellation to South West Lodge No. 283, to serve as Junior Grand Deacon for the ensuing Masonic year. Right Worshipful Bruce R. Galloway said that he has been singled out for his dedication to our Craft, and it is his belief he will prove to be a true leader, not only in our Lodge, but on the state level as well. Let us be very proud of him being the one to represent SWL No. 283 to bring fraternal greetings when traveling throughout California during his term.

From the West Brethren, I like to report to you that last month (September 2017) stated meeting dinner was outstanding which
was prepared by our Sister Reina wife of our Junior Warden who was not in attendance because of military duties and with
the help of lodge members who volunteered their time and efforts the dinner was a great success. I also like to commend
Brother Willie Francia for his volunteerism who brought a delicious food for everyone to partake. I do always appreciate
Sister Reina for her commendable efforts who always made sure that the lodge refreshment is always provided even though
taking care of two very active young boys, she is always perform the task of the Junior Warden preparing refreshment for
everyone to partake.
The month of September has past and gone quickly due to the busy schedules of training candidates and
advancing them to the next degrees including 2017 Mason of the Year award ceremony and Grand Master of California,
Most Worshipful John Heisner reception. This event is now a lodge annual ceremony and was fully supported by lodge
members and everyone enjoyed it especially the Grand Master’s inspirational speech. In addition to the schedules, the
Masons4Mitts a fundraising event was also held in PETCO park a game of the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondback
which was attended by number of masons in San Diego and the proceeds will benefit the unfortunate youngsters who can’t afford to own a mitt. This is an
annual event hosted by the Grand Lodge of California and I encourage everyone to participate and share, help the unfortunate kids of San Diego.
South West Lodge also hosted a golf fundraising to help out in financing the lodge patio which will enhance the rental capacity of the lodge. At
present the project is in early stage (plans, permits and drawings approved by the city) and hope that it will continue to go through. With the tireless and
commendable efforts of Worshipful Ed Yaptangco, made sure that the refreshment was properly prepared, the golf fundraising was a huge success.
As the aspiring Master for the incoming masonic year, it is my desire to perform in the best of my ability and it will be a great honor to serve the
lodge in that capacity.
Lastly the California Masons Annual Communication will be conducted on October 13, 14, and 15 – where the California Masonic Code will be
updated and the ensuing masonic year Grand Lodge of California Officers will be installed – and the Lodge pillars will be attending. This is also open to all
master masons and everyone is invited to attend at you own freewill and accord.
On the Level, Raymund Madriaga, Senior Warden
From the South A good portion of September; many of our active duty Navy Chiefs (including myself) had our hands
full with Fiscal Year 18’s Chief Induction which is also referred as CPO365 Phase II. The purpose of this
Naval tradition includes congratulating, welcoming, inspiring, improving, instilling trust and motivating the
chief selects, while simultaneously teaching leadership, building “esprit de corps”, promoting unity, building
teamwork and occasionally having some fun in the process. Chief Selects join group physical fitness
routines, read and train about our naval heritage and participate in core values discussions, civic and
community projects and various leadership and teamwork training efforts.
You’re probably wondering why I am discussing this on my trestleboard and how it’s even
relatable? Well let me explain… During my induction (FY15), I discovered there WERE similarities within
both Fraternities: Freemasonry and the CPO Mess. A perfect example is the letters “U.S.N.” on our Gold
Anchors. Many assume it stands for “United States Navy” but surprisingly it doesn’t. These letters actually
have a more noble and glorious meaning which we learn during our season:
The "U" stands for Unity, which reminds us of cooperation, maintaining harmony and continuity of purpose and action.
The "S" stands for Service, which reminds us of service to our God, our fellow man and our Navy. The "N" stands for
Navigation, which reminds us to keep ourselves on a true course so that we may walk upright before God and man in
our transactions with all mankind, but especially with our fellow Chiefs. Now after reading what U.S.N. actually stands
for, you immediately realize it directly mirrors what the Plumb, Square, and Level means to us. “ The Plumb admonishes us to walk uprightly, in our several stations, before God and man; squaring our actions by the
Square of virtue; and ever remembering that we are traveling upon the Level of time, to that undiscovered country, from whose bourne
no travelers return.”
I am very proud to be part of both organizations: Freemasonry and The Chief’s Mess. Both have a strong sense of tradition, a
personal moral code and a sense of duty which I will continuously uphold.
