FROM THE PASTOR
In last week’s homily I recommended several summer reading opportunities to help us grow in our faith or, put another way, to help us “bring Jesus with us on vacation.” The first consideration we want to keep in mind if we hope to carry the Lord’s yoke of instruction easily and lightly is to avoid taking on too heavy a task. One should not seek, therefore, to dive into complex theology. However, it must be Catholic: anything “spiritual but not religious” is not designed to teach us about Christ as the Son who alone knows the Father. Compelling reading in this regard are conversion stories of those who became Catholic. Often a single book will dedicate each chapter to a particular individual whose journey to the Church is able to teach us different aspects of our own faith. For example: the Surprised by Truth series or Atheist to Catholic: Stories of Conversion. Also, reading a short work of the life of a saint is very instructive and often encourages us in our own struggles toward faith and holiness. If one were to start down the road of theology, then basic is best: Frank Sheed’s Theology for Beginners and Scott Hahn’s books, particularly The Lamb’s Supper: the Mass as Heaven on Earth, are all excellent ways to keep our interest during times designed for relaxation. Of course, our true starting point is the word of God itself, but here, too, we need to be humble. If we hope to read the Bible as an epic poem or novel like the Iliad, the chances that we will get beyond Leviticus (or even Genesis!) is pretty remote. This is because the Bible is a collection of books and not a single plot line or even single genre of literature. So we can start simple here as well. The best idea is to begin with short, plot-based works. Epic stories of characters we may recognize can be found in Judges and Daniel; romance in Tobit, Ruth, and God’s love poem, Song of Songs; the “original game of thrones” that is the Kingdom of David in the books of Samuel. Read historical drama in Esther, the fight for freedom in Maccabees, and the founding of the Church in Acts of the Apostles. Lastly, if we want to activate our brain with serious questions for God, read Job; to reflect on the Wisdom He seeks to give us, start with Ecclesiastes. For further reading please check out our website. Under the “Parish Life” tab you will see a selection for “Bookshelf,” or go directly to http://stathanasiusreading.org/bookshelf or https://www.goodreads.com/group/bookshelf/225380-stathanasiusreading. Special thanks goes to Mr. John Silva for managing our online media!

Prayer for My Parish
Almighty God, my parish is composed of people like me.
I help make it what it is.
It will be friendly if I am . It will be holy if I am.
Its pews will be filled if I help fill them.
It will do great work if I work.
It will be prayerful if I pray .
It will make generous gifts to many causes , If I am a
generous giver .
It will bring other people into its worship,
If I invite and bring them.
It will be a parish family of loyalty and love, of
fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity, and
mercy.
If I - who make it what it is-
am filled with these same qualities.
Therefore, with the help of God,
I will dedicate myself to the task of being
all the things that I want my parish to be.
Bless my journey, Lord God
That I might build the Church
Through Jesus Christ our Lord
Amen

July 16~ Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
How appropriate the scriptures for this weekend! For the gardeners among us, seeds that were sown weeks ago are beginning to bear fruit. We look forward to the produce that will come. Each week at Mass, God’s word, as seed, is sown in our hearts. Is there a word that God has spoken to you that has not yet born fruit or achieved the end that God intended? Pray for the grace to respond to that word today.
