Welcome to the 112th Annual Meeting
The Texas State Historical Association returns to Corpus Christi for the 2008Annual Meeting at the Omni Bayfront Tower Hotel. For the first time,TSHAwill partner with the Hispanic Heritage of Texas Project for the four day
event. HHTP and the Program Committee have done an excellent job of organizingthis year’s program, resulting in more than sixty sessions covering a broad range of top-ics in Texas history, and offering a selection appealing to both academic historians andlay enthusiasts. Examine the session topics to discover numerous opportunities tolearn more about what has happened over the centuries to make Texas what it is today.
Begin the special events on Wednesday evening with a book reading and receptionhosted by the HHTP. Thursday lunch offers a rare glimpse into the world of the col-lege president as George C.Wright, president of Prairie View A&M, addresses the sub-ject of “Historically Black Colleges.”Thursday evening presents an unusual treat—asunset cruise of beautiful Corpus Christi Bay. Following the cruise, head back to theOmni Bayfront Tower ballroom overlooking the bay for the TSHA Awards Banquet.Plan to attend to help us celebrate the accomplishments of Texas history researchersand authors.
Bruce Shackleford, who has appeared on “Antiques Roadshow” on PBS for tenseasons, will speak at the Book Lovers’ & Texana Collectors’ Breakfast on Fridaymorning. An avid historian, author, and museum advisor, Mr. Shackleford will sharehis considerable knowledge of Texas treasures in his presentation “Collecting Aheadof the Trend,” filled with tips for anticipating “hot” items and collecting perennialfavorites.
On Friday at noon, the Liz Carpenter Award will be presented for the best schol-arly book on the history of women and Texas published during the past year.Following the award presentation, Janice Woods Windle, author of True Women, HillCountry:A Novel, and Will’sWar:A Novel will be our guest speaker at the Women andTexas History Luncheon.
Those attending the President’s Reception on Friday evening will travel to theCorpus Christi Museum of Science and History for an evening of soft music andgreat food among the exhibits as we honor our incoming president, Frances B.Vick.Following the reception, I will address you one last time as president at thePresidential Banquet.
Wind up the last day of the meeting on Saturday at the Breakfast featuring stu-dents in the TSHA–sponsored program, Texas History Day. They will present anaward-winning performance on Conflict and Compromise in History—the 2008Texas History Day theme.
I thank the Hispanic Heritage of Texas Project and the members of the 2008Annual Meeting Program Committee for compiling a wide-ranging and diverse col-lection of sessions. Chaired by Light T. Cummins, the Program Committee consistedof Jean Stuntz, Bruce Winders, Richard MacCaslin, T. Lindsay Baker, Cary Wintz,Adán Benavides, Richard Stryker, Rebecca Sharpless, and Yvonne D. Frear. Theyworked tirelessly throughout the year to create a great program, as did TSHA staffersJanice Pinney,Terri Killen, and Sandra Gilstrap, without whose hard work the meet-ing would not be possible.
Enjoy celebrating Texas History Month with your friends at the Texas StateHistorical Association’s 2008 Annual Meeting.
