Al Capone's Speakeasy a Great Success for Boys & Girls

Club of Eden On Saturday, November 15, more than 200 people turned out to support the Boys and Girls Club of Eden’s most im-portant fundraiser, the 11th annual Bash for Cash dinner and auction. This year’s theme, “Al Capone’s Speakeasy” was a rousing success! Many guests dressed in 20s and 30s garb and enjoyed the period music played by the Eden Jr./Sr. High School Jazz Ensemble, but the most exciting part of the event was the police “raid” on the speakeasy, which included several notable “arrests,” and concluded with an auction to raise their bail money. Mr.RobertPietrocarlowashonoredwithofficialEmeri-tus status in recognition of his more than 10 years of service to the Club; however, the true theme of the eve-ning was that “Great Futures Start Here.” Noting several American “greats” who are Boys and Girls Club alums, from Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice to Smokey Rob-inson to Martin Sheen, Dr. Jim Collins, an alumnus of the Franklin Street Club in Tonawanda, likened developing our Club members into future American citizens to building a cathedral. He remarked, “Sure, we provide after school day care for otherwise latchkey kids; sure, we provide an op-portunityforphysicalactivitytoblowoffsteam;sure,weprovide homework help; sure, the kids participate in Junior Stafftoenhancecareerandleadershipdevelopment;sure,we provide the Healthy Habits program for nutrition and cooking education; but the ultimate achievement and goal is to mold future productive American citizens.” Outgoing Board President, Mrs. Karen Smith, was again the driving force behind this year’s Bash for Cash. She will be re-membered for her big heart. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She was the loving wife of the late Richard L. Craw-ford.
