Th at hooked shape certainly makes them whimsical and able to hang on tree boughs. But candy canes weren’t always the curved and colorful treats they are today. In the 1700s, candy canes were nothing more than straight white sticks of sugar candy used to decorate Christmas trees. A choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral decided that having the ends bent to depict a shepherd’s crook and passing them out during church services would help
keep children quiet. It was not until roughly the 20th century that candy canes acquired their red stripes. Some surmise that the candy cane is shaped like a shepherd’s crook to represent Jesus Christ, who tended to his fl ock of supporters. Others say that it’s a “J” for Jesus. Regardless of their shape, hundreds of thousands of candy canes are now manufactured and shipped for the holiday season each year.
SWEET FACTSCandy canes are very popular
holiday treats and are often used
to decorate Christmas trees.

The holidays and
fruitcake have long
been intertwined.
Fruitcakes are oft en mocked, detested and discarded. Fruitcake
is an enduring tradition, most simply because the food, well, endures. Most fruitcakes will last 8 to 12 months if wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and stored in an airtight container. Jokingly, many families have said fruitcake is the only food durable enough to become an heirloom.
While mocked, it may entice a few people to know just how fruitcake has become a holiday treat.
Th e oldest references to fruitcake date back to Roman times. Ancient crusaders and hunters consumed
fruitcake because it was a durable commodity that could persevere on long trips. Because of its combination of ingredients, fruitcake was also a good source of energy, much the way a trail mix is good for today’s hikers.
In the 1700s, Europeans baked a ceremonial fruitcake at the end of the nut harvest. It was saved and eaten the following year at the harvest, with the hopes it would spur another successful harvest.
Fruitcake can be an integral part of a holiday celebration. Instead of giving fruitcakes as gift s, they should be served as part of the holiday feast. In addition to the sugar cookies and pies on the Christmas table, celebrants can serve slices of fruitcake featuring their favorite ingredients.

DID YOU KNOW?
The tradition of lighting up a Christmas tree, for
example, dates back to the days before Christmas lights. Before electric-powered twinkle lights were invented and even before electricity was discovered, people used actual candles to adorn the Christmas tree. As one can imagine, having an open fl ame next to a dried-out tree was risky, so it was customary to keep a bucket of water next to the tree in the case of fi re. As if fi re wasn’t enough, the tinsel used to decorate trees was made from strips of silver and even lead -- something that is now known to be a
health hazard to adults and children alike. Although we’ve come a long way since candles and lead, even now trees that are overly dry and decorated with lights that have frayed wires can just as easily lead to fi res. Plus, plastic tinsel can be a choking hazard for children and pets. One Christmas staple that has lost its status as a safety hazard is the poinsettia plant. It has long been thought that poinsettias are poisonous to people and animals. While there is some toxicity to the plant, it would require the ingestion of hundreds of leaves to get a toxic dose of a plant’s poison.
Many Christmas traditions are older than
some celebrants might think.

Has a Deep History
While they might know what to do when that time comes, they
might not know the history of that plant above their heads.
Especially sacred to Celtic Druids, mistletoe was believed to bestow life and fertility, while also protecting against poison and serving as an aphrodisiac.
Mistletoe would later take on a more political meaning, as the ritual of cutting the mistletoe came to symbolize the emasculation of the old king by his successor.
Nowadays, mistletoe is typically hung in doorways or entryways from one room to another. During the Middle Ages, branches of mistletoe were hung from ceilings to ward off evil spirits.
Th e tradition of kissing underneath the mistletoe likely stems from the belief that mistletoe bestows fertility and is oft en associated with the Roman festival of Saturnalia, a period of merrymaking that pre-dated Christmas. In 18th century England, a young lady standing underneath the mistletoe could not refuse to be kissed. Once kissed, the kiss would signify deep romance or eternal friendship.
History also suggests that mistletoe was a symbol of peace. In Scandinavia, mistletoe was considered a plant of peace. When standing underneath the mistletoe, enemies could declare a truce and spouses could end any marital turmoil with a kiss.
Chances are, holiday revelers will fi nd
themselves underneath the mistletoe at least
once this holiday season.

It’s easy for children to get lost in big crowds. According to safety expert Alyssa Dver, founder of the Center to
Prevent Lost Children, statistics indicate 90 percent of families will experience losing a child in a public place. Twenty percent have lost a child more than once. Th is can be traumatizing for children, with 95 percent remembering the trauma of getting lost. Establishing a safety plan with children on what to do should they get lost might help reduce time spent looking for lost kids.
* Place your cell phone number in the
child’s pocket or in his shoe so kids have your number with them at all times.
* Take a photo of your child before going out so you’ll have the most recent picture, including what she is wearing.
Try to dress your child brightly so she will stand out in a crowd.
* Instruct the child to look for a “Mommy” for help. Women are less
likely to be predators and will oft en help a child who is lost.
* Don’t dress your child in something that has his name on it. Strangers can call the name and confuse the child into thinking it’s safe to go with them.

The majority of cards are bought in boxed packages or groupings of photo cards. Gone are the days of
hand-picking individual greeting cards for every recipient. Th is trend toward general-theme cards has streamlined the process and can help senders start their tasks earlier than ever before. Some people like to take advantage of post-holiday sales to stock up on greeting cards for the following year at a deep discount. Th is means they can write the cards out at their leisure and then simply toss them into the mailbox at the appropriate time.
Th ose who want their cards to arrive fi rst will mail them within a few days of Th anksgiving. When sent domestically, it is safe to assume that cards mailed out up to 2 weeks before Christmas will arrive on time. Aft er that point, you may be risking lateness, particularly for rural delivery addresses unless cards are sent priority. For those who need to mail cards internationally, sticking close to the end of November will ensure they arrive in a timely manner.
People who want to make a statement
and not have their greeting cards get lost in the crowd may intentionally mail them late and lean toward wishing health and prosperity for the new year, rather than sending a card tied to a specifi c holiday. Th is gives extra time for mailing and will set cards apart from the many others. For those who are on borrowed time, taking a photo with a personal camera and having prints made up at a pharmacy or retail store can save time.
Postage is another thing that will have to be considered when mailing out cards. While many cards fall under the weight and size limits of a regular fi rst class postage stamp, unusually shaped envelopes or heavy greeting cards may cost more. Rather than have them returned, it is a good idea to have at least one card weighed at the post offi ce to ensure the right amount of postage is affi xed. Some cards will be packaged with envelopes that state “Additional postage may be required” right on the box.
Greeting cards are an important component of the holiday season. Ensuring they arrive on time requires planning and sending them out with ample time to spare.
TIPS For Getting Greeting Cards Out On Time
Millions of greeting
cards are sent out
each holiday season.
Estimates suggest that
85 percent of the United
States population, or
roughly 250 million
people, mails out
greeting cards. That adds
up to billions of cards
going through the postal
system -- and all in a
relatively short period of
time.

For holiday hosts, parties are a great opportunity to make the season even more festive
with an event that guests won’t soon forget. Th e following are just a few themes to make your holiday party as memorable as it is merry.
Christmas sweater party: Christmas sweater parties have grown in popularity over the last decade, when revelers have tried to outdo one another with the most outrageous holiday-themed sweater. Give prizes for the most outlandish sweater and let guests know early on so they can begin their hunt for a holiday sweater that’s so ugly or outrageous you can’t help but love it.
Christmas costume party: Costume parties aren’t just for
Halloween. Th is holiday season, consider making your holiday bash a costume party, encouraging guests to dress up as their favorite characters from holiday tales like “Frosty the Snowman,” “A Christmas Carol” or any of the host of beloved holiday legends.
Christmas karaoke: For those who love to belt out their favorite holiday tunes, consider throwing a Christmas karaoke party that allows guests to perform their own renditions of their favorite Christmas carols. Purchase a home karaoke set and ask guests in advance of the party if there are any particular songs they’d like to perform.
OUT-OF-THE-BOX Themes For Your Holiday Party
Parties are an integral part of
the holiday season, when friends
and family gather to celebrate and
give thanks.

Untangling wires and wrapping them around boughs can be nerve wracking, but lighting
a tree doesn’t have to be a chore when you follow some tips from the professionals. First, keep in mind that wrapping lights around the tree horizontally is more work and often doesn’t produce a multi-dimensional effect. Rather, string the lights from the trunk up to the top, working vertically. This is actually how the tree decorators at Rockefeller Center in New York City do the famous tree year after year. This method helps eliminate tangled wires
and empty spots. Remember to plug in the strands of lights before you begin to check for burnt-out bulbs and to adjust the spacing of lights to prevent dark spots. Think about varying light bulb sizes to add more dimension. String an inner layer of small LED white lights to produce an inner glow on the tree before adding larger, colored lights on top to increase visual appeal. Just be sure to match the same wattage of the lights so that you do not have power surges and can prolong the life of the bulbs.
TREE LIGHTING
TipsLighting a Christmas tree may seem like child’s play,
but time and again people struggle with the task.

The Real SANTA CLAUS
lthough many of his abilities are the result of folklore,
there actually was a Santa Claus, or St. Nicholas. The real St. Nicholas lived in Turkey. He was
a bishop in the town of Myra during the fourth century.
According to Dutch legend, Sinter Klaas, or St. Nicholas,
brought gifts at Christmas, either through an open window or down a chimney. This legend
is the basis of the Santa Claus we know and love today. St. Nicholas
takes on many personas depending on the country in which his tale is being
told. For most, he is a plump and jolly man with a penchant for cookies and milk.
Come Christmastime, children
all around the world await the
arrival of Santa Claus.

The Price of Kidney Disease on a ChildElizabeth Price smiles with glee as her father
pushes her on a swing. Nine year old Ellie then
frolics across the lush grass behind their Tantulus
home. What isn’t noticeable behind her effervescent
personality is a rare kidney disease.
Ellie was born with an extremely low level of
amniotic fluid. Doctors had to use an ambu bag to
stimulate her first breaths and found she had
Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease
(ARPKD), a condition leading to enlarged kidneys.
Doctors at Kapiolani Hospital were unsure about
Ellie’s ultimate survival, but allowed her to go home
four days after birth. They gave her medication and
monitored her blood pressure. An evaluation by a
pediatric nephrologist from Stanford Hospital said
it was unlikely she would survive her first year
without dialysis and ultimately a kidney transplant.
Today Ellie is still in and out of the hospital, as
she constantly battles high blood pressure.
Medications are a fact of life for her.
Julia Price says, “Looking at her today, it’s hard
to imagine how close to that edge of survival she
once was. She is well aware that one day she will
need a kidney transplant. It’s hard to imagine chil-
dren and adults struggling on dialysis for years,
while waiting for a kidney to save their life.”
One out of every seven people in Hawaii suffer
from kidney disease. Join us in the fight to keep our
neighbors like Ellie alive.

Though many people who look forward
to the holiday season for all the right reasons, there are some who see this time of year as
a prime opportunity to prey on the generosity
or distraction Christmas brings. Th ieves know that
the holidays can be hectic, and they use this to their advantage,
knowing full well people tend to store high-priced items in their
homes during this time of the year. Heeding certain safety tips during
the holidays can help keep you and your loved ones safe.Stagger shopping times
Being a creature of habit may not be advantageous come the holidays.
Oft entimes, potential burglars monitor neighborhoods to see when residents come and
go. It can take mere minutes for a thief to get into a home and then abscond with valuables.
Triple-check your homeSecurity experts warn that most burglaries
occur during daytime hours when homes are empty. Th e main point of entry is on the ground fl oor via a rear or a side door. Access through a garage door is another common way thieves gain access to a home.
Before leaving the house, make sure that all doors and windows are locked and that the garage door cannot be opened. Many times thieves are able to simply enter a home through an unlocked window. Th e key is to make it as diffi cult as possible for a burglar to get inside your home.
Park in well-lit areasCars are prime targets for burglaries. Many
times shoppers visit the car frequently during shopping excursions and store gift s in the trunk, only to return for more shopping. Th ieves recognize there may be a bounty of merchandise inside.
First and foremost, all items in the car should be stored out of sight to deter interest in your vehicle. Secondly, make sure that the car is locked and that the security system (if there is one) is engaged, as merchandise in a car is not oft en covered by standard auto insurance policies
Watch your walletCash is a very attractive prospect for thieves
because it is largely untraceable and easily spent. While shoppers who want to curb high credit card bills might favor cash, it is important not to carry too much around
When using an ATM at the mall or at the bank, always be aware of your surroundings, including fellow customers. It may be worth paying multiple service fees to withdraw small amounts of cash rather than withdrawing a large amount of money that thieves can target.
SAFETY Should
Be A Holiday
Tradition, Too
Celebrants and shoppers annually
spend billions of dollars during the
holiday season. With so much money
exchanging hands, it is imperative for
shoppers and revelers to use caution to
avoid incidents that can put a damper
on such a festive time of year.

Studies worldwide con-tinue to show that sheep-skins are an effective tool inthe prevention of bedsores, and helping people rest bet-ter. More doctors are recom-mending sheepskins fortheir patients, for babies, and active men and women.Medical sheepskins helpregulate body temperature, providing cool comfort inthe summer and warmth inthe winter. When used to sitor lie on, natural sheepskindistributes pressure evenlyunder the body allowing aircirculation. It helps to relaxand regenerate the body.
In 2003, a study by doc-tors at The Royal Mel-bourne Hospital inAustralia, showed thatmedical sheepskins reducethe likelihood of bedsoresby 58%! They also foundthat bedsores are usuallyfully preventable!
Bedsores (AKA pressuresores, pressure ulcers), area commonly encounteredproblem experienced by
people who are confined toa bed or sitting in a chair forlong periods. Confinedmovement creates pressureon the skin where the bodyweight is supported- nor-mally the lower back, but-tocks, shoulders, and heels. This closes tiny arteries atthe skins surface and pre-vents vital nutrients fromreaching the skin tissue, the
skin tissue dies and bed-sores form.
Bedsores can cultivate ina matter of hours, and if un-treated will develop intodeep decubitus ulcers,
which could eat throughmuscles and tendons. Sen-iors are most at risk be-cause their skin is veryfragile. Medical sheepskin’ssoft springy wool helps pre-
vent this from happening bydistributing body weight, in-creasing air circulationaround the body; reducingexcess perspiration andhelping people rest morecomfortably. In anotherstudy by doctors at The Uni-versity of Cambridge in Eng-land, they confirmed thatbabies actually grew betterand slept more soundly ongenuine sheepskins.

And with so many people trying to spend less these days, preparing for the holidays has become that
much more challenging. But by planning in advance and establishing a holiday shopping game plan, you can save money and maintain your peace of mind.
Start at the bottom line. Th e best way to avoid overspending during the holidays is to establish a budget -- and then stick to it. Also, know as you go. Know what portion of a holiday budget is for gift s and keep a running total of expenditures as you shop.
Consider family gift s. If there are a
number of families on your gift list, consider giving a single gift -- or gift basket -- that everyone can enjoy. A waffl e iron or ice cream maker, for example, is a gift that foodie families will savor for years to come.
Give the gift of your time. Some of the most cherished gift s have no price tag attached. Homemade gift certifi cates for things like car washing, dishwashing, babysitting, lawn mowing, and closet cleaning are always wonderful and welcome. As the giver, just make sure to make good on your promise.

While the holiday season is a time of joy, giving and religious reflection, it also can be a time of excess. For the
environmentally conscious, the holiday season is a great opportunity to put your ideals to use. Although it may seem like a challenging task, going green for the holidays is easier than you might think.
Get a live Christmas tree. Christmas trees are planted expressly for the purpose of being cut down and turned into holiday decor. Be a good steward for the environment and recycle your tree once the holidays are over.
Consider giving food as a gift. Food is consumable, doesn’t take up space, and locally grown food does not require shipping or wasteful packaging.
It’s an ideal gift for those who already have everything.Don’t leave lights and other decorative items on
for extended periods of time. Homes and businesses
bedecked in holiday lights and décor are staples of the season. However, extra lights, inflatable lawn Santas and other accessories consume substantial amounts of energy
Donate unused gifts. Nearly everyone gets an unwanted gift come the holiday season. Instead of putting items in the trash or taking them back to the store, donate gifts you’ll never use to a charity or a thrift shop.
Although many people tend to go overboard for the holidays, getting into the holiday spirit does not have to be unfriendly to the environment.

A puppy at Christmas or a bunny at Easter may be given with good intentions, but that well-meaning sentiment can easily backfi re, ending with the pet being given up for adoption when recipients
don’t feel up to the task of raising a pet. In such instances, the companion animal pays the steepest price.
Th ough it oft en is, buying a pet should not be an impulse purchase. You see sad eyes looking back at you from behind a cage door and want to give that animal a new home. However, introducing an animal into a family is not a decision to take lightly. You must factor how well the pet will fi t in with the family dynamic. Do schedules allow for quality time spent with the animal? Is it a fi nancially good time to care for an animal that will cost money? Making those big decisions for a person on the receiving end of your well-intentioned gift may be crossing a line. Would you want to have such a life-changing decision made for you?
Th e hectic nature of the holiday season can be a diffi cult time for a pet to grow acclimated to its new environment. He or she may be frightened to assimilate or take longer to settle down. Pets oft en need several weeks of quiet and constant care to become comfortable in their new environments. Here are some other reasons why the holidays are not a good time for new pets.
Holiday visitors may frighten the new pet and he or she may become weary of strangers at the outset.Th e activities in the household may pose safety hazards for the young animal. An abundance of rich foods and various decorations could be ingested, potentially causing illness.
New pets should be carefully supervised around children to see how they behave. A child may not be accustomed to handling a puppy or kitten and could injure the animal. Similarly, the pet may be skittish and lash out at the child. Adults busy with holiday obligations may be easily distracted and miss how their child is interacting with the new pet.
Once the glow of the holidays wear off , children may be disillusioned with the new responsibility that has fallen into their hands. Th ey may not like the responsibility that comes with being a good pet owner.
Animal welfare groups warn that an estimated 50 percent of pets adopted during the holidays end up right back at shelters. Th is can scar the pet. Avoid the temptation of giving a companion animal as a present. If it is your intention to gift an animal, talk to the gift recipient and discuss the pros and cons beforehand. Th en you can work together and make the right decision for all parties involved, including the pet.
THINK TWICEBefore Giving Pets As Holiday Gifts
Giving a pet as a present
seems like a great idea, but
shoppers might want to give
it more consideration before
giving a gift that is such a
considerable responsibility.

Decorating is one of the many traditions associated with the holiday season. Th e family Christmas tree is arguably the most prominent decoration. Having a live tree inside the home can be awe-inspiring, but
it can also be quite messy.Th e idea of bringing a formerly live tree inside a home as a decoration may
seem odd, especially when individuals are faced with the aft ermath, which is oft en a trail of pine needles and very sticky sap. A freshly cut pine tree will ooze sap, which tends to be quite sticky and messy and notoriously diffi cult to remove. Even a Christmas tree that is average in stature can generate a fair amount of sap, and it takes just a few drops of sap to make a mess.
If sap has you stuck for clean-up ideas, consider these home remedies. On clothing:* Use rubbing alcohol on the sap stain. Allow the alcohol to sit on the stain
for 30 minutes and then wash as usual.* Make a paste of laundry detergent and water and apply it to the stain.* Ammonia also may remove a sap stain. Just test an inconspicuous part of
the clothing to determine if applying ammonia changes its color. On carpeting:* Freeze the sap with ice cubes and then carefully pick out the hardened
pieces.* Try vodka as an adhesive remover on the sap stain.* Rubbing alcohol also may be able to break up sap in carpet fi bers.On hands:* Any greasy, oil-based product can work, such as olive oil or even vegetable
shortening. Rub on the skin, and the sap should come right off .* A lubricant like WD-40 has also been known to remove sap.* Hand sanitizer, which is comprised mainly of alcohol, can help dissolve sap
so it can be rinsed off .* Make a paste of mineral oil (baby oil) and baking soda. Th is should help
dissolve the sap and make your hands soft in the process. In hair:* Sap can be notoriously diffi cult to get out of human hair or animal fur. Try
coating the sap in natural peanut butter or mayonnaise, both of which have a high oil content. Allow to sit for a while and then comb out the sap with a fi ne-toothed comb.
* If tree sap cannot be removed, cutting it out may be the only option.

Set in the 1930s, Annie is an optimis-tic and spunky orphan who is eager to escape the clutches of the orphanage matron, Miss Hanni-gan. Annie’s seemingly hopeless situation changes dramatically when she is selected to spend a short time at the residence of the wealthy industrialist, Oliver Warbucks. She quickly charms the household staff—and eventually melts the heart of the sup-posedly unfeeling Mr. Warbucks, but not without some bumps along the way. With hit musical numbers including “Tomor-row” and “Hard Knock Life,” this touching tale of friends and family is perfect for the holidays! For tickets call 733-0274 or purchase online at www.diamondheadtheatre.com.

Forget the naughty or nice list, parents and other caregivers can celebrate well-behaved children
with a diff erent sort of rewards system -- a good behavior calendar that can be used to mark days of minded manners, exemplary acts or help around the house.
Children oft en respond well to positive reinforcement. Instead of just reprimanding children when they have done something bad, reward good behavior by focusing on all the things that they do well. A calendar that showcases the days that children were on their best behavior can be a way to
showcase all the good things kids do.Th e calendar will help encourage
children to act responsibly and behave during a stressful month when it can be easy to misbehave. It will also serve as a countdown calendar for Christmas and New Year’s. Vary the rules according to your household.
If the calendar works well for December, consider making one a few times a year.

Customs may be unique to every family, but many countries boast their own unique traditions as well.
Australia: Many Australians celebrate Christmas by coming together at night to sing carols outside. Th at’s not as chilly as it might sound, as Christmas in Australia actually falls during summer vacation. In fact, many of the country’s most popular Christmas traditions occur outside.
England: Contrary to Australia, England’s weather around Christmastime is much colder. Many of England’s traditions resemble those popular in North America, including wrapping gift s, hanging stockings over the fi replace and gathering around the Christmas tree. Kids inEngland write a letter with their wishes to Father Christmas, but unlike mailing those letters like many North American children do, English children toss their letters into a fi re so their Christmas wishes can go up the chimney.
France: Christmas celebrations in France begin several weeks before December 25, but Christmas Eve is most special to many natives of France. On Christmas Eve, church bells ring as people sing noels, or carols. Th e
following day, a feast is enjoyed upon returning home from church.
Germany: In Germany, the weather is cold during the Christmas season, and in the weeks leading
up to Christmas families bake sweet bread, cakes with candied fruits and spicy cookies. Advent wreaths are popular in Germany and are purchased four Sundays before Christmas begins. Th e wreaths have places for four candles, and families light a candle on the wreath each Sunday.
Mexico: Families in Mexico celebrate Christmas by decorating their homes with lilies or evergreens. Because the weather is warm, many families also cut designs into brown paper bags before inserting a candle and then setting the designs, called farolitos, along the sidewalk, on windowsills, on rooft ops, and along outdoor walls. Many communities in the southwestern United States have adopted this tradition, which they oft en refer to as luminaria.
Sweden: Christmas celebrations in Sweden begin on December 13, the day the country celebrates St. Lucia’s Day. Celebrations for St. Lucia, the patron saint of light, are intricate and involve the whole family. A couple of days before Christmas is when many families select their Christmas tree.
