LACROSSE AT MEREDITH COLLEGEMeredith College will add lacrosse as a varsity sport for the 2012-13

athletics season. Meredith will be the first college or university in

Raleigh, N.C., to offer women’s lacrosse.

Meredith lacrosse players will have the opportunity to play on one of the

premier athletic facilities in the USA South Athletic Conference. Opened

in 2008, Meredith’s state-of-the-art Athletic Field and Track complex will

be the home field for the College’s lacrosse team. The complex includes

a lighted competition level track, a FieldTurf artificial playing surface

capable of supporting soccer and lacrosse games and a storage facility.

Future phases of the project will include a grandstand, hospitality areas,

support facilities, restrooms, brick arcade and locker rooms. The field

also supports Meredith’s soccer and cross country teams.

A WINNING TRADITION Athletics have been a part of the Meredith experience for more than

100 years. The first competitive games against other schools were

held in 1904. Since then, Meredith’s athletic teams have enjoyed

many successes. In 1952, the basketball and field hockey teams

pulled out impressive victories against the University of North Carolina

and Duke. In 1980, the golf team won the NCAIAW state champion-

ship while the tennis team took the conference title. The golf team

finished second in the AIAW Division III national tournament in 1981,

in Meredith’s first bid for a national championship.

In the mid-1980s, Meredith began expanding its varsity offerings.

Softball was added during the 1985-86 academic year. Soccer was

added in 1993, followed by the addition of cross country in 2005.

Meredith will field its first varsity lacrosse team in 2013.

In the last decade, Mer-

edith has seen an increase

in the competitiveness of

the athletics programs on

a regional and national

level. The program has had

seven NCAA tournament

bids across three differ-

ent sports since 2001 (basketball 2001, 2003; tennis 2003, 2007,

2009; and soccer 2007, 2008). The 2007-08 season marked the

first year of competition in the USA South Athletic Conference. Mer-

edith was the first single gender institution to win a conference title

with both tennis and soccer tournament wins in 2008-09. The soccer

team added a regular season title in 2009.

THE DIVISION III EXPERIENCE Meredith athletics teams participate in Division III of the National Col-

legiate Athletic Association. Division III athletics offers student-athletes

the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals who successfully

integrate athletics and academics while experiencing all aspects of

college life. Division III athletics feature athletes who can receive only

academic financial assistance and athletics departments that are staffed

and funded like any other department in the College.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCEMeredith College’s commitment to academics is exemplified by its

athletics teams. Each year, the USA South Athletic Conference recog-

nizes its student-athletes’ hard work in the classroom by naming an

Academic All-Conference team. A student-athlete must have earned

a 3.0 GPA in each of the two semesters of a given year to be eligible.

The athletics department also offers a special Athletics Director’s

List that recognizes the athletes that receive a 3.5 each of the two

semesters. During the 2010-11 season, 45.8% of Meredith’s student

athletes finished with a 3.0 or higher and 18.8% received the Athlet-

ics Director’s award with a 3.5 or higher.

MEDICAL SERVICES Meredith’s athletic training staff provides excellent care for partici-

pants. The athletic training support staff consists of head athletic

trainer, Sharon Malley, student athletic trainers from the University of

North Carolina and on-call physicians. Some of the services and equip-

ment provided include a whirlpool, hydrocollator, ultrasound, injury ice

and electrical stimulation. Meredith College serves as a clinical site for

the UNC-Chapel Hill Undergraduate Athletic Training Program.

COMMUNITY SERVICE Members from each team are elected to the Student Athlete Advisory

Committee that organizes support for each sport and also coordinates

community service. Past volunteer work includes Special Olympics

of Wake County, Habitat for Humanity, Service Raleigh, and the USA

South Athletic Conference’s Cans Across the Conference and Pennies

for a Purpose.
