Advantages: Local vs. Hosted

• Locally managed– Possibly cheaper– “Complete” local control

• Hosted– Easily scalable– Pay as you go/use– Higher availability of services to run

over content– Limited technical expertise required


Disadvantages: Local vs. Hosted

• Locally managed– Locked in to hardware choice– Expensive/difficult to scale storage up/down– Tech experience

• Hosted– Unknown changes at any time to:

• Pricing for storage• Services offered• Location of storage• Service level agreement


Keep in Mind: Local

• How do you enable content backups and preservation workflow/policies?

• How do you provide geographic distribution of content?

• How do you ensure all copies are kept synchronized?

• How do you enable quick retrieval and restoration of some/all of your content in event of data loss/recovery scenarios?

• How do you ensure the health of all copies on an ongoing basis?

“workflow to the vendor’s system”?• How and what preparations need to take place

in order for content/collections to be ready for transfer to the vendor?

– Institutions with significantly limited resources: combination of local open source tools for processing content and free hosted service for storage

– Institutions with some financial resources but limited staff resources: hosted service or membership organization like MetaArchive

– Institutions with some staff resources but limited financial resources: local open source tools for processing with a hosted service for storage

– Institutions with both resources: likely an all-in-one hosted service or membership service is attractive
