Sunday Reflection

"This the truth each Christian learns, bread into His flesh He turns, to His precious blood the wine…"

Several years ago, having experienced a spiritual rea-wakening of my Catholic faith and desiring to learn more about the treasures of Church teaching, I enrolled in a distance program in Christian Tradition with a Cath-olic college. Most of my classes were taught by wonder-ful, faithful professors. Then, for a required on-campus session, I chose an Ethics class, hoping to explore the rich ethical teachings of the Catholic Church in depth.

It turned out that the class was taught by a secular, non-Catholic professor. I was disappointed to discover our assigned textbook was The Elements of Moral Phi-losophy by James Rachels, an ethicist known for his decidedly utilitarian viewpoint, a promoter of euthanasia and animal rights. Hardly a hopeful sign…

The first day of class, the professor presented us with a short film. The filmmaker focused on the tabernacle in a quiet Catholic Church, while the slightly mocking voice of the narrator questioned why, if Catholics really be-lieve that Jesus is present in the Eucharist, were there not adoring crowds in every Catholic Church?

I was troubled that this professor seemed to have cho-sen this film to plant doubt in the minds of his students, but also by the fact that there is some truth to that question. If we really believe Jesus Christ is truly pre-sent, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, in all the taber-nacles in the world and at every sacred celebration of the Mass, we should give bold witness to this miracu-lous truth in the sight of an unbelieving world.

In the Tri-Cities, we are blessed with two Perpetual Ad-oration Chapels, at St. Joseph's in Kennewick and St. Patrick's in Pasco. Christ the King has Adoration every Friday, along with an hour of Adoration on Sunday af-ternoons, and Holy Spirit offers Adoration on Fridays also. If you haven't already done so, sign up to spend an hour with the Lord - it will change your life!

For the Solemnity of Corpus Christi today, be a witness to the miraculous presence of Christ among us, in every word you speak, every action you take, and every time you pass by the tabernacle!

Peace and Justice Reflection

Joan Chittister, OSB

Now the question is broader than the personal, as it was in times past. Now the question is whether or not there is, as well, such a thing as a moral nation, a mor-al society, a moral government. In an age of interna-tional travel, computerized weaponry, genocide, inter-national corporate wealth and the impact of pluralistic value systems, the implications of such questions themselves stretch us to the edges of our souls.

Ignatian Spirituality

In a book called, What's Your Decision, authors Sparough, Manney, and Hipskind discuss Godly decision making. God cares about our decisions, they write. St. Ignatius of Loyola expressed this same truth in his Spiritual Exercises. He invented a decision-making pro-cess that allows everyone to make good, God-centered decisions. The Spiritual Exercises teach us how to do this. We start with the foundation as we ask: What do I believe about God? If we see God as unconcerned about our actions or choices, we won't think to ask God about any decision. Once we see God as lover and friend, and once we believe the truth that he will show us how to live moment by moment, that's when we can begin to discern.

The Spiritual Exercises will start a new session in September. We invite you to join us. To register, email or call for an application or download one from http://spiritual-exercises.com. For questions, call Ellen at 628-8626 or email [email protected].

Eucharistic Devotion

Carmelite Corner

Meditate with the Church on Malachi 1:11 taken from Office of Morning Prayer, Corpus Christi. “From the rising of the sun, even to its setting, my name is great among the nations; And everywhere they bring sacrifice to my name, and a pure offering; For great is my name among the nations, says the Lord of hosts.”

For information about the Lay Carmelites, contact Rebecca Moak at 509-460-1608.

Franciscan Spirituality

Would you like to give more time to God, but wonder how to do that when your life is so busy? Do you long for holiness, and feel a need for support in growing spir-itually? Perhaps your heart has been moved by stories of St. Francis of Assisi, or the Peace Prayer attributed to him, and you are seeking that same holy simplicity, true peace and perfect joy? If so, Christ may be calling you to explore the Secular Franciscan life. We’d be happy to meet with you and to share about our Franciscan journey. Contact Bob Fitzsimmons at [email protected], www.tcfran.org, or 521-9387.

Evening prayers for peace: Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. in the chapel. Prayers from the breviary are led by members of the Social Justice and Peace Committee. In a world rampant with violence, Pope Francis calls us to follow the nonviolent way of Jesus. Can you spare a half-hour before dinner?
