Breda RaggettI

HAVE just received the newsletter of the Food Safety Authority. The

Authority look after food safety for consumers. There is an interesting article on the direct consumption of raw milk.

The article is by Professor Alan O’Reilly CEO FSAI and it is about the sale of raw milk for direct human consumption. He explains that the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine is proposing to reintroduce a prohibition on the sale of raw milk (unpasteurised) for direct human consumption and this has become a subject for public and political debate.

Mr O’Reilly says various

advocates of raw milk consumption claim that there are resulting nutritional and health benefits such as curing asthma and similar afflictions, but there is no scientific data to support such claims.

While the Authority recognises that the standards of dairy hygiene and animal health have improved , it is still virtually impossible to produce raw milk under commercial conditions which can be guaranteed as pathogen-free.

It is the FSAI’s opinion that the risks to human health from drinking raw milk remain real, serious and potentially fatal, even if rare. These risks can

be controlled effectively through pasteurisation.

The prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) in cattle herds in Ireland puts us in a different position to most member states in the EU, where the disease has been eradicated. Risk of acquiring TB from raw milk is very low, but still exists.

The FSAI does not recommend that people drink raw milk. Pasteurisation is the most reliable and acceptable method of ensuring milk is safe to drink and advise farm families that they should consider home pasteurisation kits if they wish to consume milk from their own farms. The warning is clear, drink pasteurised milk only.

AUTHOR Julian Barnes recently scooped the Man Booker prize for ‘The Sense of an Ending’.The book centres on Tony Webster and his clique who first meet Adrian Finn at school. Sex-hungry and book-hungry, they navigate the girl-less 6th form together, trading in affectations, in-jokes, rumour and wit.

Maybe Adrian was a little more serious than the others, certainly more intelligent, but they all swore to stay friends for life. Now Tony is in middle age. He’s certainly never tried to hurt anybody. Memory, though, is imperfect. It can always throw up surprises, as a lawyer’s letter is about to prove.

FILM The Adventures of Tin TinDirector Steven Spielberg

Spielberg and Peter Jackson collaborated on this adaptation of this beloved series of

comic books by Herge. While it does not surpass any of their high watermarks it will delight younger viewers. The ripping yarn is as follows- Tin Tin an investigative journalist buys a model ship at a market which is the catalyst for a whole heap of mayhem. He soon finds himself robbed, beaten up and chased in various continents around the world while he has to solve several riddles to discover the location of treasure. We are introduced to several characters along the way -Captain Haddock , Snowy and the Thompson Twins and the set pieces come thick and quick to keep us entertained. That is essentially the main problem that Spielberg has to solve. Middle America doesn’t have a clue who Tin Tin is. The books by Herge were never popular Stateside and much of the movie’s shortcomings are the fact that this complex world has to be explained to them. The script by fanboy dream team of Stephen Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish conflates a

number of books together to make a good first impression but it is a little over-cooked. Spielberg meanwhile turns the whole thing into a string of action sequences worried that his audience will be bored. The other striking thing about this movie is of course the controversial technique of motion capture. Robert Zemeckis has ruined his career with three duds using this system - ‘Polar Express’,’Beowolf’ and ‘Christmas Carol’. Spielberg manages to avoid a lot of the pitfalls that his old protege fell into and has an ace up his sleeve- Andy Serkis. No other actor can project such wonder and pathos into a character using this technology. Like Golem or Caeser his Captain Haddock is a three dimensionally being and every scene with him ignites the screen. However this technique is still finding its feet which lacks the freedom of animation or the weight of live action. In the end the movie is a mixed bag. Children unfamiliar with either director’s work will still enjoy it and look forward to Jackson’s sequel. Hopefully he can draw a little bit more of the detail from the original panels and make a film that doesn’t rely so heavily on trickery to tells it’s story. It is worth the price of admission this time round if only for the breath- taking title sequence and Snowy the dog. – DARRAGH BYRNE
