IT’S TIME TO The task BRIO typeface 16 students, working together, create some 80 letters and glyphs using the tracks of a BRIO wooden train set. Besides being fun to play with, the many modules in the BRIO Railway System can be combined to create individual characters within the geometric limitations of the tracks. The exercise facilitates the exploration of the design potential and the various possible combinations that create one and the same letter, and how the different letters »» Christoph Walz wears many hats. Since completing his studies in Schwäbisch Gmünd and Vancouver, he has settled in Munich, where he has worked as a designer in a number of fields. As a freelancer, he develops corporate design solu- tions for diverse clients and projects. He serves as the art director for animation and film projects for the agency velvet medien design GmbH. He has designed “packaging” for numerous broadcast and screen formats, and completely revamped the information graphics for the »» »» ZDF evening news and weather. He has been teaching typo- graphy courses at Munich University of Applied Sciences since 2009. Film and photography are also important to him, both professionally and as a private hobby.
