The task

BRIO typeface

16 students, working together, create

some 80 letters and glyphs using

the tracks of a BRIO wooden train set.

Besides being fun to play with, the

many modules in the BRIO Railway

System can be combined to create

individual characters within the

geometric limitations of the tracks.

Christoph Walz

wears many hats. Since completing

his studies in Schwäbisch Gmünd and

Vancouver, he has settled in Munich,

where he has worked as a designer in

a number of fields. As a freelancer,

he develops corporate design solu-

tions for diverse clients and projects.

He serves as the art director for

animation and film projects for the

agency velvet medien design GmbH.

He has designed “packaging” for

numerous broadcast and screen

formats, and completely revamped

the information graphics for the »»

»» ZDF evening news and weather.

He has been teaching typo-

graphy courses at Munich University

of Applied Sciences since 2009.

Film and photography are also

important to him, both professionally

and as a private hobby. He began

teaching image design and

compo sition at the University of

Applied Science in Chur, Switzerland

in 2010. ««

Practical aspects

It quickly becomes evident that the

(young) typographer is a herd animal.

In groups of three to four participants,

the aspiring typographers assemble

all the uppercase and lowercase

letters of the alphabet as well as a few

special characters, any number of

variations and even the occasional

stop motion animation – all within just

eight hours. ««
