We also were well pleased with the location of the Conference; our thoughts were filled with the things of which the Spirit of proph ecy writes: “All who are delighted with the grandeur and beauty of nature, must feel a thrill of joy as they behold these grand old mountains, beautiful hills, and the wild and rocky canyons. IHowever, when our dear believers fromfar and near began to arrive, it was evident that this would be one of the largestConferences we have yet had. And thusit was. Expected and unexpected visitorshelped swell the attendance and gave usreason for great rejoicing. Truly, ourhearts were made glad, and I feel certainthat we shall all take up the responsibilities of God and His cause with renewedzeal and courage.The Conference was officially opened at9:30 a. m. August 9th, by Elder Kramer.In his remarks the speaker expressed thedesire that God would help all brethernand sisters to come into the closest ofChristian fellowship, so that the perfectunity, which exists between Christ andthe Father, might be seen among us. Herelated the blessings of the past two yearsand expressed his desire to see the advancement of the cause of God in all the

earth. Two European mission trips haveenabled the believers in those lands to begin a work of re-organization which, wepray, will reach its climax in the not toodistant future. We know that, despite allobstacles which we have to meet, the Lordwill accomplish His work gloriously. Thework which the enemy is doing will onlypurify the church of God and maki usstronger in the faith. It is clearly seenthat the Lord is working in the cause ofreformation to the end that His peoplemay soon be ready for the outpouring ofthe latter rain. Decisions for the truthwhich are being made by many today, reveal that God’s children are making preparations for the last great conflict. Theyknow that time is very short. Great trialsand tribulations are before us, but we alsoknow from where we receive power to bevictorious in these trials. The way togain power and strength leads to the do

set where by earnest, persevering prayerand by repentance of every secret sin wereceive power to live a closer life withGod, and be a living testimony for thetruth.

Along with the blessings there weremany sacrifices. Elder Kramer emphasized the fact that he would be unableto henceforth bear all the heavy work andresponsibilities that had rested upon himthe past two years. Due considerationwas given to brother Kramer’s request andprovision was made that he need not carrythe undue burden and extreme amount oflabor that had formerly rested upon him.The Lord has blessed him in his work, andit is the prayer of the believers that hishealth and strength may return to himagain, so that his service to the Conferencemay prove a blessing in the future as ithas in the past.

Friday night Elder Stabel conducted are-consecration service. Hearts weremoved, and many responded to the callfor a re-dedication of their lives to God.Among those who accepted Jesus as theirpersonal Saviour, six dear young peopleexpressed their desire to make a covenantwith God by baptism. Several others expressed their desire to have studies to learnmore of this blessed truth, preparatory tobaptism. May God grant the workers inthe various fields the wisdom to lead thesesouls into “all the truth”, and that theytoo may soon be buried with Him in baptism.

The morning devotional meetings werevery inspiring, calling us ‘to a closer walkwith God. 0, How good and precious itis to feast upon the word of God and theSpirit of prophecy! Many timely instructions were presented to us, and we knowthat God’s true children will delight inconforming their life completely to thewill of God. One of our pioneers of thework of Reformation, Elder 0. Welp, Sr.and his wife, were also in our midst during the Conference for which we arethankful, and our prayer is that God maycontinue to bless them.

Sabbath morning a very impressiveservice was conducted by Elder Doerschler. His recent trans-oceanic voyages hadinspired him to select “Anchored in Christas his subject.” This was made even moreimpressive by the beautiful white anchorsuspended back of the rostrum.

A beautiful day ended with a beautiful program by the young people. Themission of Christ was most beautifullyportrayed in narration, Scripture readingand song. Truly we have a fine group ofyoung people, may God grant that manyshall yet enter the service of God, by devoting all their time to the promulgationof the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Sunday morning an impressive baptismal service was performed. In a nearbylake these six young people were immersedin the name of the “Father, the Son andthe Holy Ghost,” to come forth to a newlife in Christ Jesus. May God keep themfaithful to Him and this blessed truth,until Jesus comes. The afternoon of thisday was occupied by accepting these newsouls into church-fellowship and a praiseservice. The expression of thankfulnçssof our dear believers, was manifested bytheir willingness and their liberality. MayGod richly bless all in return for theirsacrifices.

Aside from the spiritual, we also foundblessings in the business transactions atthis Conference. The Treasurers reportwas most encouraging and we can trulysee that God has blessed us for going forward in faith. Let us not be discouragednor doubtful, “for God is able,” if we“only believe.”

The nominating committee selected thefollowing officers and committees, andthese were later unanimously endorsed bythe delegates.

Our believers will be most happy tohear that Elder A. W. Doerschler has beenre-instated as a full time worker. His services to the American Union in the past.more than twenty-five years have been invaluable and we heartily welcome himback into the ranks of the workers, thanking God for having given him the physicalstrength, health and courage to again assume with us the heavy responsibilitiesof the Work. Will you not pray for himand all the workers, as well as the newlyelected officers and committee members?They need the sustaining grace of Godwhich can only be obtained by their’s andyour prayers.

Brethern and sisters we are living in theanticipation of greater things in themonths to come. We have every reasonto feel encouraged and none to be discouraged. Pray fervently and earnestly,and believe that with God “all things arepossible.”

INTERNATIONAL WORKThe Lord blessed us also marvelously in

all our counsels in regard to the work in allthe World. This was done in harmonywith the suggestions of our Brethren inother countries. Our main object in mindwas how we could best further the causeof God on earth. Different plans werelaid, resolutions made, and we believe thatall will prove a great blessing to God’scause. Further reports will be given in thenear future.

We praise God for that wonderfulpromise that He will be with us all thedays of our life, even unto the end of theworld. As long as we continue to be withGod, and walk faithfully in the truth.

the Lord will continue to be with us, andwe can lay hold upon His promises. Without His divine help we can do nothing.We must in this time of harvest have Hishelp in cutting the sheaves. He mustsharpen our tools as we go about and dothe work of gathering the sheaves intothe barn. When we consider that thefields were never whiter for harvest thannow, and that the call for earnest laborerswas never more urgent, we should, oneand all, be inspired with more zeal to doour part in the cause of God, and no oneshould in any way be a hindrance for thework. Nothing in this world should holdus back to do our uttermost part in thevine-yard. All brethren in responsiblepositions, all ministers, all evangelists, andevery other worker, including all churchofficers and lay members, should rally tothe work, and be a living testimony forthe truth of reformation. Only in thisway will the living testimony be revivedin the church.

Awake! Awake! Dear brethren. Theclock of time is about to strike 12, and

he greatest need in our churches aretrue shepherds. We need men which lovethe flock and who are willing to lern thequalifications of a shepherd, and whichdelight to do this work. We need under-shepherds which work to receive the commendation of the chief Shepherd andwhich look forward to receive a crown ofglory at His appearing.

Love, big-hearted, tender, unselfishlove, is one of the main qualifications; alove which is longsuffering and kind, envieth not, vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly,seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil. Such love neverfaileth.

We closed our Conference with one desire, namely that God may “continuallystrengthen our trust in Him”.

That He might grant strength andcourage so that under every condition orcircumstance we may fight the good fightof faith.

That our thoughts may ever dwell upon heavenly things, and that we may everlook to Jesus the Author and Finisher ofour faith.

Thai every work which we may perform may be done to the glory of God.

That through our life, our words, ouractions, our fellowship with others, wemay prove to the world that we have beenwith Jesus, and have learned of Him.

May we at last have the privilege toreign with Him throughout eternity, isour prayer.

The Bible instructions to the shepherdsare thus: “Feed my sheep”, “Feed mylambs”, “Carry the lambs at your bosom”,“Lead them beside the still waters.” Thesheep have to be led to good pasture, uponthe green meadows, and upon the highhills, but never to low-lying, swampy anddarkened places.

Christ said, “I am the good shepherd:The good shepherd giveth his life for thesheep. But he that is an hireling, and notthe shepherd, whose own the sheep are not,seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth thesheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catchedthem, and scattered the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he s an hireling, andcareth not for the sheep. I am the good

shepherd, and know my sheep, and amknown of mine. As the Father knowethme, even so know I the Father: and I laydown my life for the sheep.” John 10:11-15. Seek ye that which is diseased and lostbring back that which went astray, bindup what has been broken, strengthen thesick and the weak and let them dwellsafely without fear. (see Ps. 23:1-3. Ezek.34.)

What a picture is here presented: Theunder-shepherd follows the pattern of theGood Shepherd! Can you see how a shepherd is searching in the Word of God andin the Testimonies to find a new patch offresh, green pasture for his flock? Canyou behold another, lovingly binding upthe wounds of a sheep that was hurt?Visualize a shepherd who is going forthin search for the lost and the discouraged?The elder or shepherd desires to lead hisflock to a good resting place. How oftendoes the Bible mention the flock as restingbesides still waters. The Lord shall “feedthem in good pasture”, and “they shalldwell safely in the wilderness, and sleepin the woods”

In all this no mention is made that theflock is being beaten or scolded, or thatsomeone throws at the flock with sticksand stones to cause a diseased or sick sheepto move. This would be a dangerous proceedure. To the very sheep, which youdesire to move, you might inflict a mortalwound, or you might miss the one aimedat and hit another one.

Go much rather directly to he diseasedsheep; come very close to it and try tofind out its difficulties and, as becomes akind, loving shepherd, tie up its wounds,pouring oil into them in all calmness ofsoul. An operation is scarcely ever per-

formed in public. The feelings of sicksufferers are much more tender than ofthose being well. Every true shepherd understands something of the afflictions ofthe sheep and is acquainted with the remedies for the different diseases. Thus a shepherd of the flock of Christ should also beprepared to treat the spiritual wants ofhis flock.

A true shepherd watches carefully overhis flock. He notices immediately if asheep is missing, and he is going out insearch for it. With every one he is personally acquainted. He knows them intheir home. Jesus visited the people intheir houses. He was acquainted with thehome-life of Matthew, of Simon-Peter, ofMartha and Mary. The Apostles alsocame very near to the people. They went“breaking bread from house to house”.This is the work that is needed. Yourheart will become warmed while doingsuch a work, and your thoughts will become clearer. If you become acquaintedwith people, you will be better enabled tomeet their requirements. The love of Godmust constrain us.

The question of Christ, directed toPeter, was full of deep meaning. Onlyone condition He requires to be met tobecome a disciple and to serve Him. “Doyou love Me?” He asked. This is the mainfactor in service. Even if Peter had possessed all other qualifications, without thislove of Christ he could not be a faithfulshepherd over the flock. Intelligence, benevolence, power of speech, thankfulness,and zeal are all means to help in the goodwork, but without the love of Jesus in theheart the work of a Christian preacher willnot be successful.

is rather evident that man lives in aparadox of emotions, “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary theone to the other: so that ye cannot do thethings that ye would.” Gal. 5:17. AChristian is truly a born-again person,nevertheless he still has to contend withthe old nature which clings tenaciously tohim from his first natural birth. Then, tobe absolutely natural in our behaviourmeans to act unconverted, for . .

. “thenatural man receiveth; not the things ofthe Spirit of God: for they are foolishnessunto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” 1Cor. 2:14. This does not mean that manshould act sanctimonious like a proudPharisee. In fact, a true Christian does notput on a show, yet he is different than theworld in every way. Having put onChrist in the “New Birth”, he is now a“New Being” and the Christian life becomes his second nature. :‘, What he nowdoes is absolutely natural to him, namelydoing good. He acts, his own convertedself, which is “Christ within him, the hopeof glory”. “For if ye live after the flesh,ye shall die: but if ye through the Spiritdo mortify the deeds of the body, ye shalllive. For as many as are led by the Spiritof God, they are the sons of God.” Rom.8:13, 14. “For they that are after theflesh do mind the things of the flesh; butthey that are after the Spirit the things ofthe Spirit. For to be caranally minded isdeath; but to be spiritually minded is lifeand peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject tothe law of God, neither indeed can be.So then they that are in the flesh cannot

please God. But ye are not in the flesh, butin the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit ofGod dwell in you. Now if any man havenot the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”Verses 5-9. Thus it must be evident in ourlives that we have a goodly portion of theHoly Spirit working within us, else we areonly mouth-professors and no Christiansat all.

But now the question rises: Where willI find the Spirit, if I do not possess it naturally? To this Christ answers clearly:“It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the fleshprofiteth nothing: the words that I speak.unto you, they are spirit, and they arelife.” John 6:63. Here then is the fountain of spiritual life; it is Christ and Hiswritten word that carry within them likea hidden vein of gold—the Holy Spirit.The more we take time to converse withJesus, the more we search His preciousWord, as for hidden treasures, the morewe will be endowed with the heavenlygift of the Spirit. If you, therefore, bemoan your lot of not having morestrength to overcome sin,—here is theremedy! Take it freely and often, and youwill see a marked change in your life. Thelistless, indifferent attitude will vanishlike magic and make room for new courage and joyful service. You will no longer feel Christianity a pressing burden buta happy delight and your dragging stepswill become feather-weight. And all thisbecause you walk no longer in your firstborn carnal nature, but you enjoy yourbeing young in Christ in a new nature.“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he isa new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”2 Cor. 5:17.

TO PREPARE A PEOPLE

“Men and women cannot violate naturallaw by indulging depraved appetite andlustful passions, and not violate the lawof God. Therefore, He has permitted thelight of health reform to shine upon us,that we may see our sin in violating thelaws which He has established in our being. All our enjoyment or suffering maybe traced to obedience or transgression ofnatural law. Our gracious heavenly Father sees the deplorable condition of men,who, some knowingly but many ignorantly, are living in violation of the lawsthat He has established. And in love andpity to the race, He causes the light toshine upon health reform. He publishesHis law, and the penalty that will followthe transgression of it, that all may learn,and be careful to live in harmony withnatural law. He proclaims His law so distinctly, and makes it so prominent, that it

is like a city set on a hill. All accountable beings can understand it if they will.Idiots will not be responsible. To makeplain natural law, and urge the obedienceof it, is the work that accompanies thethird angel’s message, to prepare a peoplefor the coming of the Lord.

ADAMS DEFEAT—CHRIST’S VICTORY

Adam and Eve fell through intemperate appetite. Christ came and withstoodthe fiercest temptations of Satan, and, inbehalf of the race, overcame appetite,showing that man may overcome. AsAdam fell through appetite, and lost blissful Eden, the children of Adam may,through Christ, overcome appetite, andthrough temperance in all things regainEden.

AIDS IN DISCERNING TRUTH

Ignorance is no excuse for the transgression of law. The light shines clearly,and none need be ignorant, for the greatGod Himself is man’s instructor. All arebound by the most sacred obligations toGod to heed the sound philosophy andgenuine experience which He is now giving them in reference to health reform.He designs that the great subject ofhealth reform shall be agitated, and thepublic mind deeply stirred to investigate;with all their sinful, health-destroying,brain-enervating habits, to discern sacredtruth, through which they are to be sanctified, refined, elevated and made fit forthe society of heavenly angels in thekingdom of glory . . .

GIVE the HEALTH WORK ITS PLACE

“The indifference with which thehealth books have been treated by manyis on offense to God. To separate thehealth work from the great body of thework is not in His order. Present truthlies in the work of health reform as verilyas in other features of gospel work. Noone branch, when separated from others,can be a perfect whole.

The gospel of health has able advocates,but their work has been made very hardbecause so many ministers, presidents ofconferences, and others in positions of influence, have failed to give the question ofhealth reform its proper attention. Theyhave not recognized it in its relation to thework of the message as the right arm ofthe body. When properly conducted, the healthwork is an entering wedge, making a wayfor other truths to reach the heart.When the third angel’s message is receivedin its fullness, health reform will be givenits place in the councils of the conference,in the work of the church, in the home, atthe table, and in all the household arrangements. Then the right arm will serve andprotect the body.

But while the health work has its placein the promulgation of the third angel’smessage, its advocates must not in anyway strive to make it take the place ofthe message.”

A PART OF, BUT NOT THEWHOLE MESSAGE

“The health reform is closely connectedwith the work of the third message, yet itis not the message. Our preachers shouldteach the health reform, yet they shouldnot make this the leading theme in theplace of the message. Its place is amongthose subjects which set forth the preparatory work to meet the events brought toview by the message; among these it isprominent. We should take hold of everyreform with zeal, yet should avoid givingthe impression that we are vacillating, andsubject to fanaticism.”

“The health reform is as closely relatedto the third angel’s message as the arm tothe body; but the arm cannot take theplace of the body. The proclamation ofthe third angel’s message, the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus,is the burden of our work. The messageis to be proclaimed with a loud cry; and isto go to the whole world. The presentation of health principles must be unitedwith this message,’ but must not in anycase be independent of it, or in any waytake the place of it.”

INCREASE INFLUENCE

“Much of the prejudice that preventsthe truth of the third angel’s message fromreaching the hearts of the people, mightbe removed if more attention were given

to hcalth reform. When people becomeinterested in this subject, the way is oftenprepared for the entrance of other truths.If they see that we are intelligent with regard to health they will be more ready tobelieve that we are sound in Bible doctrines.

This branch of the Lord’s work hasnot received due attention, and throughthis neglect much has been lost. If thechurch would manifest a greater interest in the reforms through which GodHimself is seeking to fit them for Hiscoming, their influence would be fargreater than it now is. God has spoken toHis people, and He designs that they shallhear and obey His voice. Although thehealth reform is not the third angel’s message, it is closely connected with it. Thosewho proclaim the message should teachhealth reform also. It is a subject that wemust understand, in order to be preparedfor the events that are close upon us, andit should have a prominent place. Satanand his agents are seeking to hinder thiswork of reform, and will do all they canto perplex and burden those who heartilyengage in it. Yet none should be discouraged at this, or cease their efforts because of it. The prophet Isaiah speaks thusof one characteristic of Christ, “He shallnot fail nor be discouraged, till He has setjudgment in the earth.” Then let not Hisfollowers talk of failure or discouragementbut remember the price paid to rescue manthat he might not perish, but have eternallife.”—Counsels on Diets and Foods, pages69 to 77.

Questions AnsweredAgain and again the question is asked:

I cannot see any difference between theReform Movement and the old AdventistChurch. They are so much alike in theirteachings. Why should I become a Reformer?

If our dear friends in the LaodiceanChurch fail to see the difference betweenthem and us, we are indeed sorry. In factthe difference is so great, so immenselygreat, that the two are not even identical.Here is proof:

While the majority Church believesthat the church, feeble and defective, asit is, will triumph in spite of its sinful andapostate condi’tion,—the Reform teachesthat “God wants a holy people”. Testi,,zonies, Vol. 1, p. 99, and that “No longerare we to be a mixed multitude.” Revicwand Herald, 12, 21, 1905.”

While the majority church believes thateven open sinners within are tares, thatmust be tolerated and not rooted up,—theReform teaches that “ . . those who persistin open sin must be separated from thechurch.” Christ’s Object Lessons, page 71.

While the majority church sees its ultimate aim in fulfilling Christ’s commandto preach the gospel of the kingdom,—the Reform teaches that it is most important to prepare a people to meet theirGod. Amos 4:12.

While the majority church aims, to secure the favor of the world by beingpatriotically serving the kings, rulers andgovernors of earthly powers,—the Reformbelieves with Sis. White that “Kings, rulersand governors . . are represented as thedragon who goes to make war with thesaints.” Testi,,,onks to Ministers, page 39.

While the majority church says that“Conscience constrains them to be conscientious co-operators rather than conscientious objectors”, Youths instructor,Nov. 18, 1941,—the Reform teaches that“God’s people cannot engage in this perplexing war . . There would be a contin

ual violation of conscience.” Testimonies,Vol. 1, page 361.

While the majority church believes thatthey will demonstrate to the govern

ment that we are not slackers . . but patriotic citizens who stand ready to respond to the countries call in times ofcrisis,” (Our Youth In Time Of War,1934 Edition,) —the Reform teaches thatwe are “ . . strangers and pilgrims on theearth”, and that “they seek a country”,Heb. 11:13, 14, are “sheep among wolves”and that they must “love their enemies”.

While the majority church seeks tostep more and more into public notice,—the Reform believes that “Truth was unpopular in Christ’s day. It is iiiipopnlartoday.” Desire of Ages, page 242.

While the majority church trusts intheir literary institutions as a means tofinish the work,—the Reform teaches that“The laborers will be qualified rather bythe unction of the Spirit than by the training of literary institutions.” Great Controt’ersy, page 606.

While the majority church takes pridein their talented speakers and men, ofstrong personality,—the Reform knowsthat “Men of talent and pleasing addressbecome the most bitter enemies of theirformer brethren.” Great Controversy,page 608.

While the 144000 question is an unsettled issue and many expect to see millions saved,—the Reform teaches fromEarly Writings, page 15 that “The livingsaints, 144000 in number understood thevoice.”

While the majority church teaches that“..each person must stand upon his ownconscientious con viction,” (Our YouthI,, Time of War, page 7.)—the Reformteaches that “Were men free to departfrom the Lord’s requirements and set up astandard for themselves, there would be avariety of standards to suit differentminds and the government would be

While the majority church, in general,is falling back to eating meat again, andsometimes even advocating it,-—the Reform teaches that “At this stage of theearth’s history, meat eating is dishonoringto God.” Bible Training School, 7. 19.1902.

Shall we continue counting up moredifferences? Then let no one tell you thatthere are no differences. But why talk ofdifferences? Simply if there was none,there would be no need of a Reform. Butbecause of the apostasy in Laodicea wehave this Reform. And this Reform isprophecied to come. It is here. It is yourduty to be in it—NOW.
