Above anything else in our lives, God wants to have allof our hearts. When Jesus was questioned as to whatis the most important commandment, Jesus said,

“Above all else, you are to love the Lord your God with allyour heart, mind, soul, and strength.”

Putting false gods in the place of the one true God iscalled the sin of idolatry.

False gods promise what only God is actually able toprovide.

During the time of Elijah, many people were living idola-trous lives. They were worshipping and serving false gods.God raises up Elijah, who confronts the king, and basicallysays, “Because of your idolatry, God sent me to tell you it’snot going to rain until God tells me to pray and asks it torain.” So now a major drought is taking place, people aredying, the rivers have dried up, food is being rationed.

Later in the story, Elijah tells the people of Israel, “It’stime to stop going back and forth. It’s time to stop waver-ing. If God is God, serve Him; but if Baal is god, serve him.

If Elijah were here today, he’d say the same thing to us. “Stop wavering. Stop saying that you love Christ when

you actually don’t serve him. Stop being a Christian onSunday but yet living like the world the rest of the week.”

The prophets of Baal had an altar built and performedtheir rituals, but their god never answered. Elijah thenconstructed a simple altar, built a trench, poured waterover the sacrifice and then prayed a simple prayer.

“O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it beknown today that you are God in Israel and that I amyour servant and I have done all these things at yourcommand.

Answer me, O Lord, answer me, so that these peoplewill know, O Lord, that you are God, and that you areturning their hearts back again.”

The fire fell, the sacrifice was consumed. Oh that we would see Him for who He is, that all the

false gods would fall far away in comparison to the onetrue God.

A Dream Becomes Reality

Alittle girl in Danville inspiredus to start a church inDanvi l le. She enjoyed

attending services at the SunburyGod’s Missionary Church with hercousin and longed to continuebut was not able to do sobecause of the distance. Chris-tine said “I wished there was achurch like this in my town.” OnJune 22, 2008, that dreambecame a reality. Services werestarted in Danville at the Grange

Hall in the former Emmanuel Evangelical UnitedBrethren Church. God gave us a “Dream team” to helpstart this church and they continue to lead and direct thechurch. A Big Thank You is in order to Joshua & JennyNeidermyer, Bi l ly & SarahCookson and Pastor Kenny &Rachel Miles for your hours ofcalling, studying, teaching, singing and caring. Withoutyou there would be no churchin Danville today. Thank youalso to the Sunbury God’sMissionary Church for believ-ing in the dream. You willinglyencouraged this team to leaveour church to start a newchurch and have invested a lotof prayer and finances in thisDream. We’re proud of You!This story couldn’t have hap-pened if not for a partnershipwith God’s Missionary Churchand God’ Missionary People.Your prayers and offerings to

Home Missions have allowed us to invest in Danvilleand other communities. Thank You! I remember receiv-ing the call from the people that owned the Grange Hall. When they asked the question, “Would you be interest-ed in buying the church building?” I responded yes. After discussion, they were willing to sell us the churchfor $60,000.00. The General Board gave $50,000, HomeMissions raised $10,000 and the Church Building waspaid for at closing. Praise God! It was really God whoinspired the dream and has made all of this a reality.Almost three years ago this church was started to givepeople a chance to choose Jesus.

Today several have been saved and many havecome to the services and heard the good news. V.B.Sand other outreach is taking place in the community. Letus continue to pray and give so God’s kingdom will con-tinue to increase.

4 GOD’S MISSIONARY STANDARD

In Exodus 28:36, the Lord instructed Moses how tomake the headpiece for the High Priest. He was tomake a gold plate for the front and engrave these words

on it, “Holy to the Lord.”What was required of the High Priest was a model of

what God really wanted for all of Israel. In Zechariah14:20-21, the prophet predicted, “In that day shall there beupon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THELORD; and the pots in the LORD'S house shall be like thebowls before the altar. Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and inJudah shall be holiness unto the LORD of hosts: and allthey that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethetherein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaan-ite in the house of the LORD of hosts.”

I cannot emphasize strongly enough the parallel toRomans 12:1-2, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by themercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacri-fice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonableservice. And be not conformed to this world: but be yetransformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye mayprove [demonstrate] what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”Every part of life is to be sancti-fied by dedication to the Lord. Every person, regardless ofhis race, is to be holy to the Lord. What is the meaning of“Holy to the Lord.” First of all, let me connect holinesswith wholeness.

WHOLLY DEDICATED TO GOD

A. Deep Love or First LoveJer.2:2-3 “Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying,

Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness ofthy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentestafter me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits ofhis increase….

B. Total ObedienceJesus urged His disciples, “If ye love me, keep my com-

mandments” (Jn.14:15).

C. Absolute Abandon!Mt.16:24, “If any man will come after me, let him deny

himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. A man on a Cross is only going One Way! There is no

turning back.

WHOLLY PURIFIED FROM SIN

Wesley believed that God had raised up the Methodistpeople for the purpose of “spreading Scriptural holinessover these lands.” He feared not that they would cease toexist as an institution, but that they would lose this wonder-

ful teaching in both doctrine and practice. Today, if theyeven talk about it, it is considered debatable whether entiresanctification is possible.

A. Forgiven of every past sin.I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to

forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

B. Purged of every trait of the carnal nature. Why did the prophet say no Canaanite would dwell in

the land? This word can also be translated “merchant.” AClarke thinks this is the meaning. No “trafficker” in thehouse of God. If this is the idea, Christ dealt with this whenHe drove out the moneychangers from the Temple.

The word can also refer to “religious merchants” —“false teachers, that make merchandise of the souls ofmen…. Moreover, a Canaanite may designate an impureperson, a hypocrite”

The reference to a Canaanite is not a racial slur. TheCanaanite was symbolical of all that was corrupt. Themeaning is that every impure thing will be removed fromthe house of the Lord and only the pure will remain.

Isaiah 52:1 Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion;put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city:for henceforth there shall no more come into thee theuncircumcised and the unclean.

In Acts 15:9, Peter sums up what happened on the day ofPentecost as “purifying their hearts by faith.”

Does God get rid of all the impure people? Or doesHe purify them? Well, if they will let Him, He will puri-fy the impure!

C. Protected from every stain and preserved from every sin.I John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light,

we have fellowship one with another, and the blood ofJesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Standing on the promises I now can seePerfect, present cleansing in the Blood for me.

WHOLLY SEPARATED FROM THE WORLD, THE FLESH, AND THE DEVIL

A. Delightfully Possessed by God.Notice how many times through the Bible the Lord

rejoices over His people saying, “You are Mine!”Leviticus 20:26 And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the

LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.

John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosenyou, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forthfruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever yeshall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

John 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would lovehis own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have cho-sen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

II Cor.6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not theunclean thing; and I will receive you, 18And will be aFather unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

B. Willingly Shunning all that would make me less like Jesus.Jesus Christ has no tenderness toward anything in our

lives that detracts from our love to Him.

C. Soberly Avoiding Impurity. The world mocks at our efforts toward purity, but no one

mocks at efforts to clean up the environment! No onemocks antivirus programs for our computers. No onemocks the fact that consumers buy bottled, purfied waterby the millions of gallons. Purity is admired in every area oflife — except moral purity! Well, God values moral purity!

Phil.4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

D. Avoiding unnecessary entanglements.Remember that in Matthew 13:22, Jesus said, “He also

that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth theword; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness ofriches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.”

2Ti 2:4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with theaffairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosenhim to be a soldier.

WHOLLY COMMITTED TO HIS AGENDA

A. Holiness of Heart and LifeHoly is not an imprint to be stamped onto the various

parts or zones of our lives. Holy must exude from withineach detail, every good work — a glow that shimmers, afragrance that pleases, a vibrancy that announces life!

Isa 35:8 And an highway shall be there, and a way, and itshall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall notpass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.

The absolute standard of God is HOLINESS!

B. Power in ServiceOne writer reminds us, “Religion is doing secular acts from sacred motives often-

er than it is doing merely sacred acts, so called. When pietystamps our life, all our acts are religious. It is wrong to sep-arate toil and worship, and to forget (continued on page 8)

6 GOD’S MISSIONARY STANDARD

This past winter my father-in-law was driving to work onwhat looked to be clear roads.

What he did not know was that therewas a patch of black ice in his path. Before he could react, he hit the iceand was sent off the road and rolledhis car. Thankfully, he walked awaywith only a few bruises.

I was reminded of how so manypeople seem to be doing so well spiri-tually, but friends and family areshocked when suddenly they haveslipped. We are troubled when an indi-vidual commits some gross sin, aseemingly happy marriage ends, or apromising young person walks awayfrom the faith. Sometimes, even thosewe have looked up to have fallen andthe scandal sends shockwaves through-out the entire Holiness Movement.

How is it that so many who seem tobe doing so well slip and fall so hard?

Often times, it is not that a personwakes up one morning and decides tobackslide. Instead they likely believethat all is going well and when they aretempted, they find that do not havethe power to resist. They are caughtoff guard and do not know why.

The sad truth is that there is nomagic formula for living above sin. Ilikely do not need to share with youour theology on holiness. If you arereading this publication, then you likelyalready know that holy living is theresult of having the carnal natureremoved in a second definite work ofgrace called entire sanctification.Unfortunately, this is often all we teachour congregations in living above moralfailure. There is so much more, and ifwe are going to guard against personalmoral slippage, then we are going haveto earnestly and purposely choose toguard against complacency.

One of the reasons that we find somany within our ranks struggling spir-itually is our unwillingness to shareour struggles with anyone. Privateproblems often fester into embarrass-ing public shame. We know this, yetwe choose to battle it alone. Somerefuse to share with even their spousesabout these secret battles. Sometimes, some will share their difficulties withtheir pastors, but often times they waituntil the problem is out of controlbefore they cry out for help, if theyever do.

Some will argue and say that Jesusalone is all they should talk to abouttheir problems. This is both foolishand inconsistent with biblical teach-ings. James 5:16 teaches, “Confessyour faults one to another, and prayone for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a right-eous man availeth much.”

7GOD’S MISSIONARY STANDARD

All the way back in Genesis chaptertwo, we find that God had created allthings and had finished by makingman. Until that point, God looked atwhat he had made and declared itgood. However, this time God lookedat man and said, “Not good.” Why?Because man was alone. Alone? Howcan he be alone? He had God, the ani-mals, and all the rest of God’s perfectcreation! The fact is that God createdmankind to need human relationshipsas well as a spiritual relationship. I amnot suggesting a deficiency in God,but simply pointing out God’s perfectdesign for humanity.

Satan’s motto is “divide and con-quer!” This is why he fights churchattendance. It is easier for a lion tohunt down a lone sheep than to facethe entire flock, especially a flockguarded by a loving shepherd! Whenwe keep our troubles to ourselves, weare allowing Satan an opportunity todiscourage our hearts by making usfeel isolated from those who caremost about us.

Lately we have been hearing of themainstream churches pushing theconcept of having an accountabilitypartner. We should not reject this con-cept just because “they do that.” It is abiblical concept. Proverbs 27:17 reads,“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharp-eneth the countenance of his friend.”

Accountability partners are not anew concept. In fact, John Wesleyadvocated them in his class meetings.William Booth taught it as well. Thereality is that the Holiness Movementwas formed with accountability part-ners as an important ingredient forspiritual victory. It is unfortunate thatwe have let this spiritual practice slipwhile others have embraced it.

There is another form of spiritualblack ice that threatens our marriages. In our culture, our jobs have increas-ingly demanded more and more ofour time, energy, and effort. Somejobs require us to take our work homewith us. Cell phones, email, and otherforms of communication have made iteasier for work to invade our personallives. It is not uncommon for the hus-band to begin to focus too much onhis job (though working wives are

increasingly finding themselves facingthe same temptation) that it becomeshis mistress.

As the husband spends more andmore time away from home and dis-connected from his wife, she feelsthat she must get her emotional needsmet through another source otherthan her husband. While this some-times is another man, more oftenthan not she turns to her attention toher children. This makes her lookmore spiritual. She appears to be amother who is very dedicated to herchildren. Busy with children, perhapshomeschooling, a job, and/or a min-istry in the church, she becomesexhausted. Soon there is no energyleft for the marriage.

This arrangement is detrimental toall. The husband and wife are bothmore susceptible to having an affair. They are less likely to work on maritaldifficulties. He will usually ignorethem, while she will likely complain tothe children (after all, it is with themshe is having an emotional affair). Thechildren become bitter at their absentfather who cares more about his workor ministry than about them. Thewhole family is dysfunctional and bro-ken, but looks perfect to everyonelooking in from the outside. Ofcourse, looking good to everyone elseis what really matters to these families.

Because of this need to look good, these families cannot ask anyone forhelp. How can they admit to their

pastor or a recommended Christiancounselor that their relationship ismore mirage than marriage? Instead, they lament the waywardness of theirchildren, saying how they taughtthem the righteous path; but, in reali-ty, they did not live out God’s designfor marriage and parenting.

Perhaps I am being too bold, but thereality is that couples in this kind ofrelationship have lied to themselves andothers for so long that they believe thatthey are doing well. If we do not recog-nize the danger in which we are placingourselves and our families, then we toowill shipwreck our marriages and thespiritual lives of our children.

How can you protect yourself frommarrying your job? First, place limits onyour availability. Use technology toyour advantage. Let the answeringmachine or voicemail answer all of yourcalls during dinner, devotions, bedtime, and any other times that are deemed“sacred family time.” If it is an emer-gency, you can call them right back.

Let your family know they are firstplace in your heart not by giving themmore stuff, but giving them more ofyour time. Your family is your firstresponsibility. While young childrencan be intimidated into subjection, teens oftentimes are lead by relation-ship. If a father does not build thatrelationship with his children whilethey are young, they will be uninter-ested when they are older.

It is not just your children whoneed your attention, but your wife aswell. Husbands are called to “love[their] wives even as Christ also lovedthe church and gave Himself for it.”Does Christ ignore us? Does He placeothers before us? Does Christ leave itup to us to make it on our own? Dowe give ourselves for our wives or dowe give the best parts of ourselves toour employers?

The internet is another source ofspiritual black ice. More and more theinternet is becoming a necessity in ourhomes. It is a wonderful tool, but itcan become an instrument of spiritualdeath if not managed correctly.

I strongly recommend that apornography block be placed onevery home (continued on page 8)

(continued from page 5) that motive gives character to deeds. An automaton may do many of our acts, but it, has no moralcharacter. The heart makes the work of the workman holy.

Holiness in the common things of life: — There is a leg-end of an artist who sought a piece of sandalwood out ofwhich to carve a Madonna. At last he was about to give upin despair, leaving the vision of his life unrealised, when ina dream he was bidden to shape the figure from a block ofoak, which was destined for the fire. Obeying the com-mand, he produced from the log of common firewood amasterpiece. In like manner many people wait for greatand brilliant opportunities for doing the good things, thebeautiful things, of which they dream, while, through allthe plain, common days, the very opportunities theyrequire for such deeds lie close to them, in the simplestand most familiar passing events, and in the homeliest cir-cumstances. They wait to find sandalwood out of which tocarve Madonnas, while far more lovely Madonnas thanthey dream of are hidden in the common logs of oak theyburn in their open fireplace, or spurn with their feet in thewood yard.

Is the whole Church holy? Well, there is a holiness thatGod wants to actualize right now, in this present evil world! But there is also a final purity, an ultimate perfection, that isstill future, that caused the heart of the poet to write.”

But God is making His people Holy right now!

C. Passionate Desire to Win SoulsMissions/EvangelismII Pet. 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise,

as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-

ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all shouldcome to repentance.

D. Progressively molded in the image of Christ andcleansed from every imperfection unlike Him.

Rom.12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by themercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacri-fice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonableservice. 2And be not conformed to this world: but be yetransformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye mayprove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will ofGod.

II Cor.3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in aglass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same imagefrom glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

CONCLUSION

God is searching for a holy people. God is making forHimself a holy people!

Jesus “…loved the church, and gave himself for it;26That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing ofwater by the word, 27That he might present it to himself aglorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any suchthing; but that it should be holy and without blemish(Eph.5:25-27).

He has provided all that we need to be HOLY TO THELORD! Seek Him, Claim His Promises, and Enjoy theFulness of His Spirit.

Average age of first Internet exposure to pornography is 11 years old.9 out of 10 children aged between the ages of 8 and 16 have viewed

pornography on the Internet, in most cases unintentionally.34% of female readers of Today's Christian Woman's online newsletter

admitted to intentionally accessing Internet porn.Over half of evangelical pastors admit viewing pornography last year. When you see those staggering numbers, why would you leave your-

self and your family unprotected? I know the software is not free, butneither is your internet service.

One needs to be careful of social networking as well. Many times Ihave seen Christian women update their Facebook statuses where theyopenly complain about their husbands. It breaks my heart. Where is thehonor and respect due him? Other times I see what amounts to nothingmore than gossip. The unwise use of Facebook, Twitter, and the like hasbeen responsible for people losing their jobs and their marriages. Do notbe one of them!

Spiritual black ice takes many forms. It would be impossible for me tolist every possible form it takes; however, we need to be constantly onguard. I Corinthians 10:12 warns, “Wherefore let him that thinketh hestandeth take heed lest he fall.” By giving due diligence to the spiritualgraces, we need never slip on spiritual black ice.

God’s Missionary Church World Missions Department hashad the wonderful opportunity to join arms with Houses ofHope for Haiti and provide some much needed homes for

the Haitian people. In response to the earthquake, a medicalteam went with us to Haiti and, when they returned home, theyhad a great burden for the housing need of the Haitian people.Out of this burden came the organization Houses of Hope forHaiti. I count it a real privilege to serve on the Board of this organi-zation. God’s Missionary Church in Haiti has received from them37 house kits for our church families. These kits include a basic8x16 house, a table, chairs, dishes, silverware, bedding and someother items to be able to start up house keeping again. What ablessing this has been to our precious Haitian people.

I had the wonderful opportunity to go on the first work team intoHaiti to assemble these houses. We had a wonderful time andwe were able to see much work accomplished for the Lord. Thefirst day we were able to build four complete houses. That wasso exciting! The progress was not quite as fast each day as someof the house had to be carried piece by piece up the mountain. Iremember on one particular day the team had carried all the sup-plies up the mountain, probably a 20 minute walk, and had built ahouse for one of our pastors and her family. It rained as the teamwas finishing up the house and made their way back to the com-pound. When we arrived at the compound, Bro. Mobley receiveda phone call from the Haitian family we had just built the housefor. They were so grateful for their house. For the first time in sev-eral months, it had rained and all their belongings were dry andthey were so grateful. What a blessing it was to have given thema house.

We continue to be overwhelmed at all that God is doing for theHaitian people through the generosity of God’s people. Houses ofHope for Haiti continues to reach out to provide for the housingneeds of the people. We are in the process right now of providingsome needed housing for an orphanage that has around 36 chil-dren who are living in very poor conditions in tents and make shiftshelters. I know that God has great plans for us as we continue tobe vessels for Him to work through. He takes what we have andhe blesses it for the use of His kingdom.

Houses of Hope for Haiti is a non-denominational group of peo-ple who have a love for Christ and a concern to help others byjoining arms with all of God’s people.
